The so called haunted castle. There are two things to see here: the ruins of Kelly's house and Kelly's castle. Some were ruined during WW2. Definitely a good experience. This place is best explored with your family or friends! Takes about one hour and a half if you are solo-exploring this place. Parking is good. Best time to go is before 12pm to get nice parking during the weekend. Ticket price is RM5 for adults plus RM2 for parking fee. Prices will vary if you are of foreign national. Toilets and souvenir shops are around here. There are also small refreshments shop to get yourself drinks and some food after you're exhausted exploring the castle and mansion.

If history and architecture are your favourite subjects, then this place is great for you. The buildings, both the old mansion (Kellas) and the newer addition, are sad reminders of the pioneering group of people who took part in the early development of this country. If you arrive just before it opens at 9.30AM, parking is a breeze. RM2 per car and entrance fee is only RM5 per person. Very reasonable. Just avoid the F&B here if you don't like to spend money. I'm glad that the authorities maintained the buildings without any ugly inappropriate modern additions (although there is a strange wooden structure on the tower end). The room with furniture is only a representation of what could have been there. Thankfully, it is the only room to be filled. There are plenty of photo spots should you want to snap some for keepsake. In summary, Kellie's Castle is a good place to visit. Recommended if you are around Ipoh.

we came around 4.30pm and found that this place is open till 6.30pm for weekend. one things need to highlight that try to park inside. NOT to park at parking lot behind as the bridge connecting to this place is not accessible. no doubt here has more parking lots available. imagine you have to walk out the parking lot under hot sun and walk along the main road in order for you to go in by main entrance. very frustrated such poor arrangement for an tourist spot. entrance fee is RM5 per adult. Here consider good spot for you to take photo shots.

William Kellie-Smith is the builder behind Kellie's castle. The was born in 1870 in Scotland. And work as a civil engineer in Malaya. Working in Charles Alma Baker's survey firm. Kellie bought 1,000 acres of land in Batu Gajar where the castle sits. He started planting rubber trees and mining Tins. And he own the Kinta Kellas Tin Dredging Company. He married to Agnes and had a daughter Helen and son Anthony. The mansion is separated into 2 section. The yellow coloured wall is the original house before the castle. While the red brick building is the castle. Which was planned for his children. It was planned with the first lift in Malaya. The incomplete lift shaft is visible on left side of the castle. And a Hindu temple nearby, Sri Maha Mariamman Temple. There are tales of the tunnel from the castle to the temple. It was built after the Spanish Flu took many of the worker's life. The castle is famous for many hidden tunnel. William Kelly die of pneumonia 1926 at the age of 56. He die on the short trip to Lisbon Portugal. Ghost story and tales of the castle. There is a popular tale of ghost figure looking out the first windows of the mansion. This figure is said to be the spirit of William Kellie. Returning to the castle and wish to see it completed. There are also tale of a ghost figure in white blouse roaming in the house. There is a secret tunnel with a car parked inside in 1960. Many worker die during the construction of the castle from Spanish flu. And rumour that they are still roaming around the castle. #Travel #Malaysia #Perak #BatuGajar #KelliesCastle #Castle #Ghost

5 star views. Worth a visit if you’re there. Interesting place. Never expected to see a castle like this. We enjoyed ourselves exploring the place. Only thing is that it’s REALLY HOT! We were too tired to go anywhere else after visiting the castle as it was so hot. Best to go in the later afternoon when it’s cooler or in the early morning when it’s not too sunny!

An interesting tourist place. Unfinished mansion of the past with suspected paranormal activity. Well maintained. Only RM5 per entry. Plenty of parking available. Wasn't crowded on weekdays. We spent about an hour plus here. Just admiring the structure & reading up on the history. Creepy underground rooms. Lots of nice spots for photos. Huge garden out back. Definitely worth a visit at least once. Only a short detour from your trip to Ipoh or Penang.

A great day trip. Entrance fee is RM5 for adults. It's well maintained and clean. You get to see an experience how a old colonial mansion is like. Be on the lookout for the secret passages!

Staff members were all so rude. Paying for admission is at the gate or you don't get in, period. Photographers will insist you need to show your "ticket" to enter the castle. You don't have to. They just want to take a green screen picture of you to try and sell it for later. Cost for entry is reasonable. The washrooms had no soap. Castle was nice to see with signs explaining the sites well. It's interesting to see and worth a stop. Just ignore the staff.

This ghostly beautiful uncompleted mansion originally owned by Scottish man named William Kellie Smith (1870 -1926). Worth to visit for those who loves historical place. Easy to reach by car and need to pay parking fees at rm2, while entrance fee rm5 per person. This place are clean, well maintained and also have cafeteria and souvenir shop.

We came on morning, not quite big amount of visitors visiting time. such a historical spot to be visit, and also nice spot of photo taking. Stiil maintained well since my first visit, but be aware at the top of roof. Entrance fee is RM5 per adult, there are some limited parking space inside RM2/parking fees , and also behind of building there was lot of parking space for free. (but connection bridge link to entrance was closed when we visit, we need to walk though main road only able to entrance)

A historical ruin that has been restored back to its original glory (sort of). It’s about a 20 mins taxi ride here from Ipoh town, a lot to see and do here. You can visit wine cellars, hidden tunnels, bedroom and also walk the supposed “hunted corridor” here. A nice excursion place for the entire family.

The building is beautiful with interesting history. Some good information provided. One thing i would like to advice, please build some sort of flower garden. There are plenty of open field with the grass nicely trimmed, why not build it up? People loves flowers with with old building as backdrop.. it is not that hard you know

This castle was used as a setting in the 1999 film Anna and the King and 2001 film Skyline Cruisers. Further read, it is reputed to be among the top five scariest places in the country. I hd a good quiet walk admiring the whole architecture of this castle.

The place is amazing, the entrance fee is 11Rm before it was 5Rm i think after the pandemic they increased the entrance fee, and they operate Monday-Thursday(9am-6pm) the last entry is 5:30pm, Friday-Sunday(9am-6:30pm) last entry at 6pm. It hot place so bring hand fan with or an umbrella. The only downside is there is no cafe but you can get drinks and water and i think that's enough. There is also a clean toilets and surau.

Interesting place to visit if like to appreciate architecture. But a little disappointed because already too much comercial. Expensive for visit only one place. Foreign need to pay RM10. So if you are with a big family. Maybe better reconsider another place. Also a funny thing is if you bring your DSLR camera they can ask you to pay more only to bring camera inside (not sure right now how much exactly). If you bring your flagship phone with high spec camera no problem... Thinks that sometimes is complicate to understand...

An old castle surrounded by beautiful scenery, right next to a river. The complex consists of 1 main building & 1 ruins where you can explore inside and there's a bit of history/ background of the place. It's noteworthy that it's not a historical site, more of private residence owned by Kellie (British businessman resided there at that time). Parking space available nearby which will cost you RM5 and ticket for each person (foreigner) will be RM10. I think for locals it'll be RM5 each. There's also a simple eatery on-site offering instant noodles & drinks. The things that I would suggest to improve (1) Cleanliness. This place losing 2 stars because it's not well-kept, it's smelly and unclean. So we just take pics and not really enjoyed the tour inside of the building. We didn't even take a look at all angles/room in the house. (2) Please don't force visitors to take pics prior proceeding to the bridge (where they'll check ur tixs & asked u to take pic there). I understand that it's to entice us to buy the souvenir (photo printing & printed keychain), but some are not comfortable having their pics taken and kept by ur company due to privacy reason. So pls consider this. Definately, if you're in the area, it's worth to give a visit especially if ur focus is to take pictures. Well, I suppose that's the main attraction here.

The tourist attraction has been improved since we were last here.. It's now well maintained.. Since it was a very short photo opportunity stop, we didn't venture into the actual castle... There should be a proof reader before the notices are posted.. Overall, it was a pleasant visit..

Kellie’s castle was named after its owner William Kellie Smith a Scottish planter. The castle was designed to replicate the great British Raj palaces in India with Moorish style arches and windows. He built the castle for his beloved wife, Agnes. Construction of this unique castle began in 1915. However, it came to an abrupt halt with Kellie’s sudden death in 1926. The solitary castle, looks almost surreal in these wild plantations of Perak, it projects a strong personality and an aura of mystery. The road that leads to Kellie’s Castle follows the contours of the land in a dizzying, maze-like fashion, adding to the mystery and romance of the place.

As a Malaysian I’ve always known this place existed but was never really interested to go visit, but I’m glad I did. It is quite interesting as they put up signs to explain the fascinating backstory of the original owner, the architecture, and the purpose and detail of each room. It is very pretty too. Not a big place but you’ll spend about 1-1.5 hours here if you go through everything. Recommended

An old and incomplete castle sitting on top of a small hill. Good place for a quick 30-minute stop over. Place is well maintained. It is not advisable to visit in the afternoon under the scorching sun as the place is quite windless. It is a only-need-to-visit-once type of place given that the place collects entry fees.

Kellie's Castle.... Picturesque surroundings I will try to be as detail as possible in this. We bunch of expats went out to Ipoh for long drive from KL on New year day. We saw many reviews on it and seems kind of popular. So decided to visit this place at the last moment. We have reached this location by evening 5 PM and it operational hours of it are till 6 PM on weekdays and 6:30 PM on Fri, Sat & Sundays. But they asked us to leave by 6 PM on Friday evening. They are maintaining it very well and so clean those premises are. They have entry fee for this facility(Attached pic as well for your reference). Adult Malaysian - RM 5 Foreigner - RM 10 Kids (4-11yrs) Malaysian - RM 3 Foreigner - RM 8 Senior Citizen Malaysian - RM 4 Foreigner - RM 10 On the castle, its a small 2 story building and has greenery backyard. To be frank its not that a big place but yet beautiful surroundings for taking some amazing pictures(added some for your reference). There are few spots where you can get good pictures but those places are crowded and everyone is waiting for their time to take some pictures. Castle has a underground wine cellar and ground floor is more for socializing purpose with waiting lounge and some setting and now they are using to explain the history of this castle. 2nd floor they have 3 bedrooms(Master bedroom, Son Bedroom and Daughter's bedroom) with wooden basement. They have 2 escape routes behind toilets. One for Master bedroom and another one is in between Son & Daughter's bedroom. There was a story going around saying few photographers who came to picture Bats have spotted a Ghostly image of a man standing looking out window and it also claims that this has been telecasted in Discovery Channel as well. There is a small canal passing through this surroundings and they have a keys wall and souvenir shop to pick some souvenir to remember this so called Ghostly castle. They are harnessing the solar energy by placing all solar powered lights in castle surroundings. GO GREEN So out and out, its a small castle and nothing compare to Indian Forts(Hyderabad/Udaypur/Delhi/Jaipur/Mysore) or European castles and you been to any of those then you can give a pass to this place. But it has beautiful surrounds, especially the pics taken with background of Sime Darby Palm oil tree plantations were breath taking ones. Carry a good hand phone when you are visiting this place to capture those surroundings and there was a sign saying RM 50 fine for Professional Cameras(There might be fee which I missed to enquire). Maintenance - 7/10 picturesque - 8/10 History- 4/10 Quality - 5/10 Environmental - 8/10 Accessible by Road - 8/10 Parking - 6/10 (Small parking place and weekends you end up parking on road side)

It's a beautiful place but can't help feeling sad. It was built as symbol of love, hope and also to show their status in the society at that time. The architectural of the building was impressive and one can only imagine what a beautiful and stunning castle it could've become if completed. As the building is incomplete, one should take extra caution when climbing up the stairs, standing on the rooftop or careful not to lean against the metal railing along the terrace.

A lot has changed. It was different the last time I went there around 15 - 20 years before. The castle has been upgraded and replicated. There were rooms and stairs now. Also you can get to the rooftop to enjoy and take pictures of the beautiful surrounding around the castle. The ticket prices are reasonable too. Just happen to be there while on our way back to KL.

Nice place to stop by if you're around Gopeng/Simpang Pulai/Ipoh with family. A few interesting stories are written on the wall in the castle as you go along. For instance, if you go on the second floor, there is a room of the daughter of the family where visitors claim to have seen her in a white blouse. The castle is almost 100 years old but still stands strong. The surrounding area is very beautiful with greens as far as your eyes can see, and a river flowing before it. Big parking area, cafes, souvenir shops etc are available here too. Ticket: RM5(Malaysian) for adults, RM3 for children between 4-11 Time: 9am-6pm(Mon-Thu), 9am-6.30pm(Fri-Sun)

It's a very good castle, but if you bring a camera, you have to pay RM50. In addition to that, you also have to pay the admission fee(RM10/peple[foreigner]). For example, you have to pay RM100(RM50*2) and an admission fee(RM10*2) if two people bring in two cameras. For Malaysian prices, I felt this was expensive.

Kellie's Castle is a castle located in Batu Gajah, Kinta District, Perak, Malaysia. The unfinished, ruined mansion, was built by a Scottish planter named William Kellie-Smith. According to differing accounts, it was either a gift for his wife or a home for his son. Kellie's Castle is situated beside the Raya River (Sungai Raya), which is a small creek to the Kinta River.

This place is small but we can learn tonne of history. From the building itself until the person who ever live in there. Visitor can take a photo frame at a cost of RM50 each. A bit expensive for me. Other souvenirs also available. Parking will be charge RM5 per-entry. Parking lot are limited, you might need to park at side road if too crowded. There is also food and drinks premises nearby at reasonable price.

It is tucked away in the Kinta district of Perak in Batu Gajah approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur and a mere 30 minutes from Ipoh. It is the ruined and unfinished mansion which was rumoured to have been either the residence to a Scottish Man’s son or a gift to his wife but was never completed due to his sudden death. Unlike other castles we have visited in Europe which have done up beautifully, this was left to hands on time. And time has definitely not been kind. On the outside, it stands majestically but on the inside, only a few fenced up rooms have been left for display with the rest of the castle as raw as raw gets. You do get the eerie vibes walking along the hallowed corridor and stair well with some of the haunting stories told on the wall. Unlike places like the killing fields and the S-21 prison in Cambodia where you have bloodstains left on the walls and have your hair standing on ends, in here its more of a peaceful feeling especially with the beautiful surrounding greenery and especially when the warm rays of the sun bask the corridors a lovely golden yellow. To all the photography lovers, don’t miss the fence at the entrance to the stairs leading to the castle where people have placed locks similar to that of the bridges in Paris. After an hour stroll around the castle grounds, we managed to conclude a few things. Firstly, it was a nice pit stop but not exactly a must. We have passed it many times before but never stopped because it was extremely crowded. Having been to the castle and knowing what to expect, do we regret passing it whilst it was crowded? No. But that said, if its not too crowded and if you have some time on your hands, why not? However, interestingly, the castle charges a small fee should you decide to take photos using any sort of camera aside from your phone camera. So do bear that in mind. Apart from that, bring along some water and a brave heart and you’re good to go! Our full review is on instagram (@monk3yseendo)

Kellie's Castle is located in Batu Gajah, Perak which is about 20-30mins drive from Ipoh city.. Entrance ticket : Adult RM5 Foreigner RM10 Spend about 1.5 hours to explore the whole castle and capture beautiful photo shot.. Please wear suitable attire preferably comfortable shoes as u need to climb up along steep and tiny stair if you wish to explore the roof top as well. Kindly choose suitable time to spend here if not you find it is too hot upstair.

The place was nice but due to weather during my last visit is a bit hot and sunny days. Buying a ticket to enter was so smooth, toilet is available, food and drinks also sold here. If the car park is full you can enter the other side of parking lot and cross the bridge, parking at side of the road is dangerous because the traffic is damn fast. Overall is ok because once you enter the castle you can feel the wind and make you feel comfortable. There was plenty information at every corner of this building.

Great place for taking photos. The architecture is amazing. Plan to go off-peak if possible for best photo opportunity. During public holidays, it will be packed. However, for historic information, it is just a short read / small exhibition. However, the ticket price is affordable so nothing to lose.

  • 3/5 Susan T. 11 months ago on Google
After buying Tickets, were told it is compulsory to take photo regardless of whether if purchase later or not. Probably a way to track attendance of tickets purchases. The place has a river running in front of the castle, just like a moat. You cross a bridge to get to the castle. It is incomplete and you get to learn about the history when exploring through each of the rooms and vicinity. You can go right up to the highest level for a view that stretches very far out since the castle is on top of a hill.

We engaged a local guide to take us through. I think the visit will be more meaningful with his story telling. Some spots are not very safe because there are no high railings and some stairs can be rather steep. Need to walk carefully. It was a hot day when we visited so good to prepare cap and water to stay hydrated. Nice photo op spots.

Overall I like the place. Nice for photoshoot and some historical visit. It’s like you going back in time. The admission fees is rm5/pax for local. There’s a lot of place inside you can explore. For me, the rooftop view is the best. Love it. Worth visiting.

  • 2/5 Muhammad R. 5 months ago on Google
Its an empty old abandoned building. Suppose this can be managed to setup and office or replace with other useful source, instead of open for visiting this. There is nothing inside, smelled old stones, wet woods and bird poops. Perak tourism can change this. Make it free if nothing inside.

Historical site with beautiful views. Learned a lot about the building's history. A thought-provoking question arose during my visit: ‘Why did they build a secret path in the house? Did they have many enemies?’

Old castle that rumored to have ghost. Nice place to visit. No worries, no ghost... But on the top roof part, must becareful because it has very little safety rail. Parents with kids make sure they dont run around at roof top... Can fall down from 4th floor... I post the roof top so you can understand what i meant... Thats me sitting at roof side... The rest of the castle, visit yourself and enjoy the view...
