A fine-looking restaurant, made to feel welcome immediately, if a bit slightly dark. But I suppose that adds to the ambience, right? Straight to the starters where we had some fresh bread rolls, calamar crouistillant, jalapeno peppers and prawns. With exception to the prawns, which didn’t seem to be cooked [much], these all tasted fine especially the croustillant and bread with the accompanied condiments - great! For the mains, I had dorado fish with a tomato-based stew, with nuts and white rice. This was a lovely balanced taste and came in quite a grand-looking tagine-esque pot. I enjoyed the varied flavours of the dish and the portion was filling too. I also tried some of the lobster ravioli, which was really lovely and part of me wishes I had that as my main meal! The virgin mojito we got was also a perfect balance of the flavours and ingredients - something where many other places don’t appear to get quite right. The only botch on the night was the evening entertainment. The singer for the night, although clearly talented, was just too loud, effecting the restaurant experience. At times, I could not hear the person next to me. Personally, I believe live entertainment should be something that is experienced in a more softer way that complements the dining experience rather than being part of the main. This is only the real issue of the night we had and unfortunately Google does not do half ratings, as I would rate this as a 4.5. It’s not quite a 5 as it was not *the* perfect night, but an enjoyable food experience nonetheless. I hope to visit sometime in the future.

Really delicious! The lobster was different than the Atlantic one I'm used to, but still lovely! The appetizer portions are huge, but the lamb was quite small. they play jazzy renditions of pop songs, and have excellent servers. The mojito was lovely, but I had the island ice tea as well which I found not quite as nice as a long island iced tea.

We took taxi to get to this place and experience restaurant which is outside of our hotel. Staff was nice and welcoming, food excellent. Lighting is very well done which might not be visible on photos, it is much better in person. It was a bit colder that night but it was still good being there. This is one of the good options to explore if you are in the area.

We went to have aperitifs here and was considering having food, but we were thoroughly disappointed with the service and being put on a dirty table, that we choose to eat elsewhere. Pity as it promised to be so much better.

A good to very good local restaurant with Indian management, it seems. Although they have other products on the menu, I recommend the products from the sea. We tried a Pearly Oysters, Golden Scallops, Prestige Medals and Exotic Sea Tiger. All very good. Desserts were ordinary. The prices correspond to the level of the dishes, but lower than in other parts of the world.

Have been coming to this restaurant for years on annual trips to Mauritius - I usually come and eat here at least once each visit as it's a great dining experience. It's in a great location with a beautiful view of the bay. The staff here are very attentive and helpful in a variety of languages (English, french, creole). Every dish I've ordered here has been delicious, and the team here have been happy to make slight changes to dishes on request. Also recommend the Isla Mauritius iced tea 👍🏽

A thoroughly enjoyable meal. Sadly a few items were missing from the menu and wine menu. I guess we can blame that on covid. Staff were friendly and made every effort to accommodate our arrival without a booking. We shared a whole lobster which was delicious. The raw sliced fish (yellow fin tuna when we visited) had a bit too much oil on it, but you could tell the fish was fresh! Sadly they were out of creme brulé.

I was invited there for dinner in June 2022. The restaurant was about 20% occupied. We wanted to have the seafood platter, but it was not available. Service is good. Corkage fees is somewhat high. Some wines are not available from the wine list. Price is on the high side

An old favorite, with a much-changed menu as well as more attractive prices. The location is idyllic, especially if you get there around sunset time. Parking is available in front of the restaurant as well as on the opposite side of the street. For starters, we went for the Baked Seafood Gratin with Palm Heart, and Prawn Tempuras. Quantity was meagre, which was a shame as the last time I had ordered that, I felt I had more. For mains, I went for the Crispy Prawns with Sugarcane syrup and Black pepper with sautéed Rice, which was an absolute delight! The prawns were huge and one could possibly leave nothing behind as the crispy prawn head was edible! I wouldn’t hesitate to order the same mains next time!

Situated in the quiet part of Grand Baie, this place has a unique vibe. You can watch a little bit of the sunset over the water. The food is very seafood I ordered the legendary Crab Curry (posted/reviewed by some before me) — definitely an experience. oriented. Things are a bit on the expensive side, and not everything on the menu is necessarily available. The drinks are pretty standard. What I enjoyed most was the Saturday night solo guitar performance, which was epic. Staff are friendly despite being super busy with larger groups of guests.

It’s a nice restaurant by the bay. Some tables are by the driveway. Make sure to book early to avoid this seating as it can be noisy. Seafood platter was good. I just don’t understand the cooking (or rather drying to death) oysters here in this island😀. Fairly priced and as always in Mauritius, nice waiters .

By the main costal road, between Mon Choisy and Grand Baie, lies the oldest restaurant in Mauritius (according to themselves). We booked in advance and were welcomed to our table. It took 25 minutes before we could order our drinks, which were delivered an additional 20 minutes later, together with our starters. The food was decent (especially the catch of the day, where the fish was fantastic) but with strange choices for sides, and a little too many re-used components (every dish had the same condiments and sides). When our starters were served, two of them were supposed to come with sides that were forgotten, and only delivered after 15 minutes, when we asked for them. We had a nice time, but it was in spite of, not thanks to, the service at Le Capitaine. They seemed to have very little experience at running a restaurant, which is surprising, considering they market themselves as "oldest restaurant on Mauritius".

The food was amazing. The staff are friendly but unfortunately the night we went, the restaurant was very busy and short of staff, so the food took a while to come and they did forget one of my order but overall the place is really good if they had enough staff but can blame them during this pandemic. FYI parking is very limited to about 6 cars for first come first serve

  • 3/5 Rory B. 2 years ago on Google
Really a mixed score card for this restaurant. The food can be very good, e.g. the Babonnne Filet with crab gratin and the Chicken with Asparagus, and some can be good, e.g. the Chicken with a Mustard sauce - although it tasted more like a Pepper sauce - and the Gambas with Palm heart. Although this last was very overpriced in the humble opinion of this reviewer. What really let's the restaurant down is quite patchy service. You are greeted and shown to your table well. The menu is only in French. Fair enough. For English, "please read the online menu and I will tell you the WiFi password". But the waiter disappears before telling you the WiFi password! We had to chase for the wine we ordered and the bill. On clearing the main course, 2 of the places weren't cleared up. It wasn't obvious why. At this point we decided to leave. I am glad I visited the restaurant. And might return, but I will be careful with what I order. And be very persistent with the wait staff. P.S. I've just remembered, we were served really good bread rolls - lovely and warm as if straight from the oven - with plates of butter and an amazing chili sauce/paste but we had no cutlery and had to ask for them. And even then there wasn't a separate bread knife. Curiously bad service considering the price range the restaurant aims to operate in.

Fresh, tasty seafood. The platter is the main draw but I was sorely disappointed that they did not have lobster or calamari on a Friday night. The chocolate fondant was rich and perfectly palatable but was served split in the middle which defeats the purpose of a fondant...

Nice venue but limited menu choices. Had a booking for 7pm and already they only had 2 desert options left and missing several items on the main menu. Keep this in mind if planning to visit. The food that was served was very nice, just let down by the variety.

Worst seafood restaurant on the island. We went there after being told that this is the best seafood restaurant to go to. We ordered the seafood platter and some soft drinks. The waiter brought us the soft drinks already poured into 2 tiny glasses filled to the top with ice. The seafood took less than 15 minutes to prepare and when it got to us, there were tons of small flies flying around it. We told the Waiter that this is not normal and he said that this is a fresh seafood restaurant and that this will always happen. However, we have been to many seafood restaurants and this has never happened. After seeing the flies buzzing around the food we smelt it and it had a pungent smell to it. I cut through the lobster which was completely raw. When I asked the waiter he said that everything was cooked together so it cannot be raw. The seafood looked like it had been frozen and microwaved before serving. We had no option but to return the food. Fortunately, as it seems that this is a common occurrence they were quick to tell us that there will be no charge. We still ended up having an absolutely great seafood lunch at half the price at our hotel.

A great find, food was amazing. Highly recommend the Crab Broth (be ready to get your fingers in the mix..) Gambas Curry and Deep Sea Red Crab Curry for mains, delicious (again, you need to get your fingers in the mix to get the best of it). Ended with the Banana Flambe…. Service was just as good and Kumar was just right balance of helpful and attentive. You won’t regret it…. The messy table Sums it up…. 🤣🤣

Delicious food - for sure quite pricy - especially for Mauritian people rather unaffordable. Nice live-music through a guitar player and singer. I like that you can see through aquariums into the kitchen. One of the best gratins that I ever had. Fish and everything was alright. One big downs was the toilet situation - no toilet paper, paper towel and quite dirty. For a chicky micky restaurant - this is a no go. That's why 3 and not 4 stars. Would I go again - maybe.

We had a wonderful lunch at this gem of a seafood restaurant on Grand Baie’s water’s edge. We went for the full seafood platter which was packed with prawns, lobster, crab, razor clams, mussels and a beautiful local fresh fish. Delicious sides and the coconut ice cream was delicious too. We were looked after too by Vishal who tended to our every need with a wonderful smile. Would highly recommend!

The octopus tasted like flip flops while it was sold to us as the "best octopus in the world by the staff" The staff kept pushing us to get the most expensive plate on the menu despite telling them that one of my guest was allergic to shellfish. The rest of the food was OK at best but not worth the price. The view was amazing however

What a fantastic experience. Yes the prices are higher than normal, but the food quality was first class. Ordered the raw fish starter, good portion with the little add on garnishing takes it to 10/10. Mains was prawn and a fish. Both were prepared very well, the fish was a small portion with a mushroom sauce, delicious. Prawns cooked well. It was also one of the only restaurants open for 2 Jan. Very friendly and engaging owner. High Kudos, I would highly recommend.

We both had grilled fish and it was very good. Only reason I have left one star is because waiter and chef got my first order wrong, I had specifically requested no chillies in chicken but it was served with chillies. So I then decided to have grilled fish instead. We will eat there again.

We ordered oysters and a seafood platter each. There was a hair on one of our oysters and seafood (especially lobster) were not cooked or half-raw. Finally after leaving the restaurant, my wife was sick and vomited all night. Anyway not the best experience for the price of dinner.
