Just a great gym. I have tried a few different gyms and fitness styles and after training with Ben for the better part of a year I am the strongest I have been and feel physically 'well' (not run down). A very welcoming atmosphere for small group classes. Good programming and a lot of individual attention for technique. Ben is obviously incredibly passionate and knowledgeable when it comes to strength training and is happy to share the knowledge if you're interested.

I’ve only started my training with Ben and I can tell I will be here for a long time. His one to one sessions are top class, he has 100% focus on my form and you can tell how passionate he is about coaching. He had my training block sent to me very quickly also, which I’m a nearly a week down and I look forward to every session now! When I ask him something over text/email there is a very prompt and professional reply. I know I’ll get everything I ever wanted out of a gym and coach at West Coast Barbell Club. I’m looking forward to seeing where this journey takes me. If you are thinking about starting training or need a change, Ben is your man!

First thing you notice with this gym is there is no mirrors. Ben is an excellent and supportive coach. He is always encouraging and gets the best out of you. I never even considered powerlifting until my wife and I started going earlier this year. Now I am hooked and just completed my first max rep testing. The community he has built is just as supportive and are easy going. Not a gym for meat heads or steroid users! If you are interested in powerlifting check out this gym, you might just get hooked like me

Cannot recommend WCBC enough, regardless of your goals. The group is fantastic ranging from those wanting to lift as much as possible, get that 'hot for yacht' summer bod, or just work towards a better quality of life in general! Personally I have managed to add around 150kg's to my Powerlifting total in just over a year and have been guided through each part of the process by Ben; even on comp day! Great people, great place and a great alternative to a 'standard' gym!

I recently joined West Coast Barbell Club, with absolutely no lifting experience, based on other people's reviews of how knowledgeable and supportive Coach Ben is. I don't think any of those reviews (or mine!) can really do WCBC justice. Ben takes the time to ensure that you not only understand what to do, but also why you're doing it, in everything from technique and programming to rehab and pain management, and he celebrates every lifter's achievements with the same enthusiasm. He's built a friendly, encouraging and safe community of like-minded people, and I can honestly say I look forward to going to the gym each session. I'm easily the strongest I've ever been in my life, and look forward to getting even stronger!

I've had a great time at this gym! Ben is a fantastic coach, very knowledgeable, and makes strength training/powerlifting really accessible. I've developed a lot at this gym - from my strength, technique, but also coming to really enjoy training. Highly recommend!

After my second total knee replacement surgery my physio had advised me to undertake some strength exercises. I sought help from Ben at West Coast Barbell Club some 9 months after the surgery and was encouraged to try out light squats, bench pressing and deadlifting for a start. I never thought I could do squats and deadlifts at my advanced age especially after TKR. However, under Ben's guidance I was able to and since then I feel my overall health and mobility has improved considerably. The twice a week cardio exercise on the freeform cardio air bike at the gym prescribed by Ben has also helped me with my body weight. I highly recommend anyone who has not done squats, deadlifting and bench pressing to try out at West Coast Barbell Club. I like to thank Ben and fellow members for their encouragement.

If only I could give 10 stars! I am a 56 year old guy and had major surgery on my spinal cord 2 years ago. Thankfully the surgery was a great success and it saved me from being wheelchair bound for the rest of my life. However I was told that from then on I had to take it easy and that exercise would be walking the dog at best. I got referred to Ben at Westcoast Barbell 2 months after my surgery. I went to my first session with little expectation as I could barely move or bend down without a lot of difficulty. However, 12 months later I was deadlifting 120KG and competing in my first amateur strength comp and I am now the strongest I have ever been !! Ben is an intellect and a specialist. He listened and researched my situation carefully and in detail and used all of his experience in rehabilitation and strength training to develop a programme specific to me … and the results speak for themselves. I am so fortunate to have been referred to Ben as he has been transformational in my life. I couldn’t recommend him more highly. Paul

Ben's coaching and programming gave me exactly what I needed - a solid strength base to stay injury-free while running and more recently playing field hockey. At 30 I was very running-fit, clocking a 22:17 parkrun PB. But after life circumstances prevented me from training for several months it took me a long time to get back into it, and persistent knee niggles and a lack of structured programming meant my training was lacklustre and I wasn't getting anywhere. In early 2021 my husband and I started 2-1 coaching with Ben, and after a few months I transitioned to group coaching 2-3 times/week (combined with 1-3 runs/week). In Aug 21 we took part in a friendly interclub powerlifting comp, at which I squatted 70kg, benched 42.5kg, and deadlifted the magical 100kg (at 57kg bodyweight), all roughly double what I was lifting when starting out. After a break, I did more 2-1 with hubby, then more group coaching, working through some left hamstring strain probably resulting from running too much/too hard after the lifting comp (ego got the better of me going for that 100!). Ben provided lots of encouragement and expert guidance through all of that, and much to my surprise and delight I have been able to play my first season of hockey this winter without anything beyond very minor post-game soreness and a little bit of quad and hamstring strain after going a bit too hard in my first game! I've got a powerful hit, am always first runner on a short corner, and it feels so good to be able to play a whole game (~6km total distance) without needing to sub out. And the hockey has massively improved my running, such that I recently clocked a new 5k all-time PB of 22:03 (just before I turned 36). I'm stoked! These accomplishments have been so very rewarding, and I am convinced that laying that foundation of strength under Ben's guidance is what has enabled me to progress so much this year and remain injury-free. Highly recommend WCBC to anyone wanting to get strong - whether it's for competition, for other fitness activities, or simply for life. You won't regret it!

Ben is a fantastic coach and the gym is top-notch: great people, amazing equipment, welcoming vibe - but still just the right amount of hard-core (it is powerlifting after all). Ben helped my wife and I to learn the fundamentals of the main barbell lifts, increase our strength profoundly, and compete in a novice powerlifting comp, which was a fantastic experience I can recommend highly enough. Also, Ben mentored me as I went through studying to be a personal trainer. As a former Physio (graduated 2000), I was impressed by Ben’s wide reaching knowledge across areas outside of standard coaching - including injury management and pain physiology. The fact that he’s trusted by many great Physiotherapists as a safe pair of hands to help people experiencing persistent pain speaks to his high level expertise.

This place is amazing!!! Ben offers a personalised, fun and professional coaching service in a small sociable group setting which makes strength training really effective. Before I came along to the group, i dabbled in strength training but it was a bit of a chore, and never really made any progress. Since joining i have become heaps stronger and really enjoy my training sessions. Ben is knowledgeable, dedicated , approachable and highly motivating , couldn't ask for a better coach! :)

I started training at West Coast Barbell Club with no weight lifting experience at all, and very worried that I would not fit in at all, but I was made to feel comfortable and welcome from the second I walked in! Ben is amazingly friendly and knowledgeable, and invests so much time and effort into your training to make sure you get the most you possibly can out of it. I only started a week or two before social distancing restrictions forced everything to shut down, and Ben still did his best to keep me in the loop and find options to keep me training. I already feel so much better for it, and am very glad I was recommended WCBC!

This is a great gym, which gave me the perfect introduction to powerlifting. Ben is an attentive, passionate and knowledgeable coach whose enthusiasm and encouragement makes me look forward to every session. The supportive and non-judgmental atmosphere really sets this place apart and makes it feel like a little community and not just a place to work out. I'd wholeheartedly recommend this gym to anyone thinking about getting into weight training.

I have been training with Ben at West Coast Barbell Club for around 4 months, after having trained in regular 24/7-type gyms for the better part of 7 years. Ben's scientific approach to programming has allowed me to navigate my strength plateaus and re-establish my knee, hip and ankle mobility post knee reconstruction. Subsequently, I am stronger and move more athletically in my 30s than I did in my 20s. Beyond my strength progression, Ben has cultivated a supportive community of all ages and experience levels that has made training a highlight of my week.

Ben is super knowledgable and has created a welcoming, supportive environment. As someone who was a bit 'out of practice', I was a little hesitant, but Ben made me feel right at home and at ease. Would definitely recommend, thanks Ben :-)

This is an outstanding gym and Ben is an incredible coach. Ben offers a unique and flexible service, catering for all ages and abilities. I initially started doing the group training sessions, which i loved but due to work commitments was unable to attend regularly. Ben was able to offer me the online service-creating a personalised program for me and regular online support, which enabled me to use the facilities at my local gym (closer to me) but still get the benefits of Ben's coaching. The pricing of both online and group sessions are extremely good value. In addition to the coaching and fun group atmosphere, the equipment in the gym is of exceptionally high quality-something which i only realised when i went back to train at my local gym! I am continuing to improve and can honestly say that joining WCBC is one of the best decisions Ive made, both for my mental and physical wellbeing. In addition to the coaching, Ben is always keen to advise on nutrition within his scope of practice and other aspects that affect training, such as managing other training loads and injury management . An all round great package, my only regret is that i didn't start sooner !

I started with the West Coast barbell club after a long period of stagnation following a beginner powerlifting program. In the short time I've been here, Ben has helped me overcome injury, helped me understand what proper programming looks like and helped me get to the strongest I've ever been. Great community and vibe. Great for those interested in strength training at ALL levels.

I got a reminder today of why I've been with West Coast Barbell Club for over 3 years now. A huge new gym has just opened in my neighbourhood. It's close, its affordable, it's shiney...but it scared the hell out of me. West Coast has such a special vibe that I'm not intimidated to train there. I came to Ben having no background in lifting or excersise at all. Fast forward a few years and I have a powerlifting state gold medal hanging in my living room (I didn't "win" it but I have it😆). Lifting has helped me in so many ways from personal confidence to work performance to pain management. West Coast Barbell Club also has a shiney new home so come on down, you'll be very welcome😊

Highly recommended - Amazing coach, community and support! Ben is a breath of fresh air with his stellar coaching and passion to support his client's strength and health journey. You won't easily find a gym like his because not only is he dedicated and passionate, but the whole West Coast Barbell community encourages you to do your best every time. I've become so much stronger since I started, initially with one-to-one personal coaching to help me integrate into group training. I had often found myself getting bored of gym routines and felt stagnant with my progress - Ben curates his training into blocks with variations to help you achieve the goals you want. Trust me, once you start...you'll enjoy it more than you think! P.S. Powerlifting is for all ages and genders! There's a lot of female clients including myself and even my partner, brother and partner's dad goes too!

I spent a few months training at West Coast Barbell Club during an extended trip to Perth. As an expat, I’ve trained at many gyms overseas and none have come close to this little gem. Ben is professional, approachable and seriously knowledgeable about strength training and has managed to create an environment that is unpretentious and non-intimidating. The facilities and equipment are awesome and all of its members have been welcoming and encouraging. The group training program is a brilliant concept - you get the benefit of Ben’s stellar coaching and programming in a small, sociable group environment. I cannot recommend this place highly enough!

Three weeks in and I feel like I’m being spoiled. What a great community! Great strength and size gain. West Coast Barbell Club doesn’t feel like a conventional gym where you just go in and lift weights. This is a community where members, and coach Ben are genuinely care about each other. Thanks to all the members and Ben, lifting weights there are not intimidating at all, they make lifting accessible to everyone, just like a warm cafe, but with extensive knowledge about powerlifting. Best club in southern hemisphere, if not the best in the world.

I first started training power lifting on recommendations from physios and Chiro’s for lower back pain. Benno came highly recommend from friends in the power lifting community. I have since trained at West Coast Barbell Club! Benno has been fantastic and I couldn’t sing his praises high enough. After 6 months of programming with Benno my back has never felt better! He not only has extensive knowledge and experience in powerlifting, he also has the knowledge and common sense to factor in clients with existing injuries. The atmosphere of the gym is also very welcoming and it feels like you are part of the team every session. If you are looking to start powerlifting for strength, rehab or pre-hab…go to West Coast Barbell, it has enhanced the quality of my life dramatically!

Since I joined WCBC last year, Ben has been an amazing and very knowledgeable coach, he has coached me through 2 competitions both in which he was extremely supportive. The gym provides a great atmosphere and everyone is supportive of each other and always encouraging! I highly recommend WCBC for anyone wanting to start strength training 👍

Signing up to West Coast Bar Bell Club was one of the best decisions I've made. After years of trying to find a gym where I felt at home, comfortable and not like I was in a nightclub (what's with that!) this place has been perfect. Ben has created a lovely community of people who are supportive and from all walks of life. There's no ego here, and I love it! Ben has helped me to rehab a back injury, building my confidence to return to lifting. He is incredibly knowledgeable and has a strong focus on safety and technique. The group sessions work really well. You have the benefit of being around people but your program is tailored and Ben makes sure that he spends a good amount of time with each person. Group training days are Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. This schedule really works because you know that you can't skip a Monday because there isn't a class on Tuesday. It has been one of the best motivators for me to actually go and work out. Can't recommend West Coast Bar Bell Club highly enough.

My heartfelt thanks go out to the coach for making my fitness journey truly exceptional.
