There is soooooo much to see here. You should do the junior ranger booklet (I’m an adult and I did it) it makes national battlefield’s more fun in my opinion. (Plus you get a unique patch if you finish the booklet). The rangers here are really nice and will help you with everything here. There’s a ton of walking and the grass will get your sneakers wet so be prepared for that. I got lost finding the western battlefield because it’s technically on a main highway/road separate from the eastern battlefield. It takes kind of a long time to see everything so if you are like me and think “aw it’s just another grassy field with a plaque” you’ll be wrong. I will admit that the drive would be better at 80mph, but maybe the road will be improved.

Nice drive through the park. Lot of trails all around and the markers tell the story well. Good place to get away or look for wildlife. Bring water and snacks, great place to let kids roam.

I decided to visit this place as part of the "Interest n History " I've been going thru lately. It was a nice day to walk and soak in the quiet scenery that told its own tales. During a time when solitude can mean the difference between life and death, this place puts a more tangible touch living as a whole. The fact that alot of whats there is ORIGINAL ....is mind blowing.

One of the problems visiting a National Park in the off season (April 2023) is some things are closed. The visitor centers at City Point, Western Front and Five Forks were all closed. As long as you have a map, all the sites had great interpretative signs to explain the locations. The Eastern Front Visitor center was well worth a visit. The Easter Front interesting sites were the Siege Encampment Exhibit and the Crater. Initially, I found the crater disappointing because it was just a depression in the ground. I was fortunate to attend Ranger Katelyn Dodge's Crater lecture. She explained the land where the Crater has located was private before the park service purchased it. It was hard to believe the land was once a golf course. After finishing the Crater's land history, Ranger Dodge rewound history and took us to day of battle. I have read about the Crater battlefield many times, but her lecture made it come alive.

Very nice and interesting place. Lots of books on the battlefield and it’s hero both confided and union soldiers. History of the war and military conflict. Very impressive with souvenirs to take home or to give away as gifts. Lots of educational materials as well.

This is a step back in time experience.. We had the best docent. He was so passionate about what took place on those grounds. Being a chaperone on a high school trip I was very impressed at the way he kept their attention so easy and they engaged in active conversations.. Well worth a stop, as I cant wait to go.back with our family..

What amazing history. The rangers are very well educated and can answer any questions. The cannons were amazing. The trail was clean. Its just an amazing peice of history. Even for a quick stop. My kids enjoyed learning about the history. Taking just a moment to admire, appreciate, and respect the sacrifice that was taken for our country to move toward equality. Highly recommend.

I love history, even tragic history. We visited this park years ago, but the visitor center was closed. I'm glad it was open this time. The park ranger/guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. The driving tour was easy to follow.

Great place! A very important battle that was fought here and one of the turning points of the Civil War. Didn't get to see any of the trails but I hope too soon, as I've heard they are nice. Gift shop was a little pricey but that's to be expected. I'd suggest checking to see if there are any closures though, as when I visited the main road throughout the park was closed and I had to walk across it.

This would be a really cool NPS site, but the auto trail was closed. The entire site is organized around the 3 mile long auto trail that take you through many of the historic locations (7 sites in total I think). There are hiking trails that diverge from the auto trail. Since nothing was accessible by car due to the auto trail being closed, we were required to walk/bike everywhere in the park. This just wasn’t feasible for us so we weren’t able to see much. Luckily the Crater is at the end of the auto trail so we parked at Seven Eleven and walked into the park at the end of the auto trail. I would like to do this park one day when the car route is open. The Bark Ranger program for dogs is cool though. My dog and I had to take an oath to respect the park. They gave my dog a nice badge and bandana.

Staff at the visitors center was very helpful and knowledgeable. This place was so nice to walk around and see all the history. There is so much to see and walk through here it amazing. I love how they’ve preserved what they could and have started to fix some of the things falling apart. Would definitely recommend stopping by and checking them out if you have the time. We only had time to make it through the east half but are going back tomorrow to finish the west half.

This park, like so many others, has so much history to see.The Dictator, the largest cannon used in the war, can be seen by walking the grounds at the visitors center. There is also a driving tour with good directions available. Be sure to take the crater trail.

This site is badly outdated. We set out to see the different units of Richmond Battlefield and they couldn’t be more different. The signage and displays are so old and broken down, it is so disappointing. Clearly they lack finding. This is an important park that interprets part of our countries history, you would think that it would be held in higher regard. When all of the other parks are well cared for and this one is not. The rangers are very nice and helpful. Most of the park is accessible and I could navigate it with my scooter. Part of the trail went into the woods and I had to turn back.

One of my favorite haunts. As a history buff, the battlefield scratches that itch. The park staff are very friendly and extremely knowledgeable. The grounds are always well kept. I really enjoy the trails and hike, bike, or run there weekly. A great place to spend the day.

This was a fun place to go! We had a guide showing us around and we got plenty of information. There was a small movie inside that was very educated with facts. They had many cannons and buildings up for display. They had a many stops with small cabins and cannons with some information on what it was about. They had a nice little hike showing cannons and it was pretty nice. This was a fun stop!

First stop was the visitor center to get a map of the Battlefields and watch a short film about the siege here and the battle of the crater. It was very informative. There is a small museum at the center and a gift shop. Restrooms adjacent to visitor center. Then off for the self guided tour of the battlefields. We went by car. Others walked or rode bicycles. There is signage at the various battlefields and many trails to follow. Just knowing what happened where we were standing in the crater was humbling. I was glad we stopped here on our way back north from Florida.

spent the day here, a lot of fun. Important history, beautiful nature, well managed battlefields. And if you have time, ask Ranger Andrew a question... any question. He's animated, knowledgeable, and a great tour guide. He's a solid source of historical information you don't always get or have access too... Good job Park Service!

The visitors center was fine, no a/c, no movie, and another museum was closed due to covid so that was a bummer. If you want to walk to the battlefields it's a lot of walking in the hot sun so going on a cool day would be ideal. We drove around the sites on the guided tour road and stopped when we wanted to. A nice place to check out.
