We visited the Lookout on a whim. So glad we did. The road to the lookout is a bit twisty and steep but worth it. Speed limit on the curvy part is 15 mph, 25 mph on other parts. Be aware as there are also trails for horseback riding, bicycles, and hikers - share the road! At the lookout there is parking and restrooms. The views are spectacular! The pictures don't do it justice, just go!

This is a fantastic spot to visit. I'm very surprised that it isn't suggested more in the many "things to do in Phoenix" lists I found online. I stumbled upon it while searching for drivable tours in the Phoenix area. The views are amazing and doesn't require hiking to get to the top. One of the members of our party has trouble walking, so we were thrilled to be able to drive all the way up to this lookout spot.

Very rewarding panoramic views of Phoenix and surrounding desert after a challenging hike, beautiful rustic lookout building too.

Out of this world experience. We hiked on a full moon day, the view is breathtaking. Could witness both sunset and moon rise on either side. At the top parking is limited and may have to wait for few minutes. There is ample spots to sit and relax..

One of the best view point in Phoenix. Leads you directly to high elevation where you could see Mesa Scottsdale and Phoenix. Best part is you could drive all the way to summit. Sunset is my favorite time to visit as Phoenix sky goes crazy during sunset time. Name the color will be able to spot on sky. Soon after sunset you will have opportunity to enjoy the downtown lights. Final tip is ensure you drive in before 7pm as drive-in gate closes. Drive-out can be done anytime. Happy Outing! Regards, Vishwas

This is an absolutely beautiful view of the entire city of Phoenix! You can also just drive right up to it, you don't need to hike at all to get to it, so this is a perfect point for everyone! You can get great views of the sunset to the west of this point! The drive up to the point takes a little while, and the roads are very curvy with steep dropoffs on the side of the road, but this point is totally worth the drive! You can also see the ruins of an old house here as well! There is parking up here as well! If you happen to be on the South side of the Phoenix area, I highly recommend checking this point out!

An outstanding view from on top of South Mountain! It was a relatively short drive! It was roughly 20 mins from Baseline. Lots of restroom accessibility nearby! The road up is fairly narrow so I recommend driving slower. I went up twice around 4:45-5 and stayed about an hour or so to be there when it was lighter and when it transitioned to evening lights. It was a very popular look out point! Lots of people there but also lots of spots to sit and still properly social distance. There are some trails all around so if you want to hike off and have your own spot, that is definitely an option!

This is one of my favorite places to visit in the Phoenix area. Every time I am in town I have to come here for a sunset at least once. It's a nice change of pace being able to park and walk 300 steps to the look out rather than hiking to it. I recommend staying a little after sunset to watch the city light up after it's dark.

Super cool at sunset! Even with all the heat. There were about 50 people up there. Plenty of space to be away from most people. Temp was around 114 degrees, so I imagine on a nicer night there are more people there. Seemed like a lot of locals, especially families were up there. Mostly could tell by the way they zipped up and down the mountain, and rode our butt in the car. There's pull offs made for us slow folk taking in the view, though! You can see all of Phoenix from on top of this mountain!

This is my favorite spot to watch the sunset in the valley! I always bring friends and family up here when they visit from out of town. If you time it right (drive up around 4:30-5) you’ll beat the rush. Park is super clean and you can hike it during the day as well. Dobbins lookout is amazing.

Dobbins Lookout provides a view of Phoenix and it's surrounding towns, home to millions of people in the valley. There is no admission to the lookout and ample parking. There are trails that can be hiked to reach the lookout, but we took the winding narrow road to the top. I was grateful to be the driver so I didn't get carsick. There were vendors selling jewelry, clothing, and snacks on the sidewalk on the edge of the parking lot. The restrooms put out a rank smell, which was blown by the breeze at the top of the mountain. And lots and lots of people all in one spot, a very touristy location. I appreciated the permanent compass pointing to various destinations around the country. I'm sure the view of the sunset from up there is incredible. We didn't make it though because we had a flight to catch.

Dobbins Lookout is the highest point in South Mountain Park and offers stunning panoramic view of the valley. A stone structure at the top offers shady seating, and a small observation platform identifies various Phoenix landmarks visible from the view, including Camelback and more local mountain ranges. I loved driving to the top of the park enjoyed sunset from this peak point.

Long drive up but great views. One plus is staying in the air conditioning of your vehicle on blistering hot days and you still want to see sights. Its also free so that's nice as well.

Great place to see south Phoenix! You can drive up here. It might be a bit dangerous at night time but just go really slow. It’s a nice view! Okay place to take pictures.

A winding drive up the summit to enjoy a fantastic view of the valley and Phoenix metro area was phenomenal. A fort-like rock structure with a backdrop city view from the lookout looks beautiful. Feel free to hike down a little and move around to explore; you will certainly see a great view of surroundings.

Breathtaking! I would highly advice catching the sunset! The drive up is spectacular and very relaxing. The parking is definitely challenging but well worth the wait. There is public restrooms and some jewelry to buy from local sales people.

Amazing! Just a fantastic site and photo op. There’s a good amount of parking. At the top there’s Porto potty style toilets inside a covered hut but no sink to wash your hands. It’s a long drive up and the closer you get to the top the curvier the road gets. There are bathrooms and vending machines in a covered building just past The Scorpio Gulch area which is also a much stop to take pictures at. Opens at 5 am and closes at 7 pm.

The crowds are a lot for the past few Sundays. The selling up top of food and jewelry I find terribly annoying. The man who sells the food finds it okay to honk a horn randomly and excessively for attention. Now to the views.... Amazing. Vast. Gorgeous. Peaceful. Beautiful. Remember gates close at 7p. You can stay up there much later.

This is my meditation spot. It’s so beautiful. You can find a spot to be alone, people watch, hike, gather with loved ones, host meet ups and group events. Simply take a moment to breath and reflect. But the views are simply unmatched. This is we’re I go to focus and reminisce I recent here. I love the photo ops and the crisp air. I also love watching families smiling and making memories. If in Arizona you have to visit here or you didn’t complete your trip.

This little slice of Heaven is beyond worth the windy, curvy road to the top. You will get spectacular, out-of-this world views. Try to go near sunset on cloudy or clear day, and I’m sure you too will get some great photos.

At Dobbins Lookout in South Mountain Park — 📍 Dobbins Lookout. Phoenix, AZ The most beautiful place to watch the sunset in Phoenix. Free to hike and park. Also parking is right outside the outlook, so if you’d prefer to just watch the sunset you can skip the hike. Gates close at 7pm to enter park so enter before sunset so you can get in. The Lookout starts to get crowded around 7:15, so get there early if you want to see the lookout without the massive sunset crowd. 🌅

The lookout was an interesting trip up and down the mountain. Switch back turns but the view from the top is outstanding. You can see all of Phoenix and the mountain range behind it. The one drawback is the top is very busy with very little parking. Closer to sunset the top gets extremely congested. A must see and a drive to remember.

This is one of the go to place for evening sunset view and also to have that beautiful night view of the city. In the evening this location is almost busy and it has limited number of parking spot so reaching there 1 hr before sunset is a good strategy. Make sure to take water with you for longer stay as there is no shops or anything to get the water. You may find some people selling snacks so that would help but idea is to be prepared. As this place is really close to the city, you can plan a visit even 1-2 hrs before the sunset. No tickets as far as I know.

This place, although a little crowded, is absolutely amazing to see for yourself... if you're going up for the lookout point only, you can still get the breathtaking sights this place has to offer amongst all the people. For hikers, I can only imagine what can be discovered...the solitude will be twice as good (to me) when I go back to hike...getting my wife boot asap!!!

This is a nice location to view entire Phoenix area. You can drive all the way up to this lookout instead of walking all the way up. The view up here is very nice, and pretty colorful few during sunset. Make sure to visit the website if you plan on driving to the lookout because the gate sometimes closes, and vehicles can’t get in.

Wonderful place, one of the best to see mesmerizing sunsets. Parking is very limited and tends to get crowded really quickly. I would recommend going there at least and hour before sunset to find a parking and find a spot to get uninterrupted view of sunset. Also you can preetymuch see the whole city of Phoenix from there and that is quite a site as well to check out any time of day especially after sunset.

Arizona sunset is one of the most beautiful sunsets I have seen. Thanks to Dobbin's Lookout! The drive here from the main road took about 30mins so plan ahead to make sure you arrive before sunset. The road is paved and the view is magnificent! We arrived 20mins before sunset and were welcomed by giant cactuses at the parking lot. The hike going up is short and easy. I was only wearing sandals. There were more people who arrived to watch the sunset but it did not get crowded. You can see the city of Phoenix from the lookout. The sunset was calming and beautiful. The orange, pink and purple colors were wonderful to witness. We stayed a little bit longer after sunset and watched a few stars appear.

I visited my son in Phoenix Dec 2023 and the first place he took me was Dobbins Lookout. I highly suggest going here as one of your first activities when visiting Phoenix. The view is amazing even with all of the smog. I live in TN and thought the Phoenix scenery was amazing. The drive up is easy and as long as you go at least an hour before sunset it won’t be crowded.

First sight seeing stop we made right off the plane. Recommended to us by the wonderful waitress we had at IHOP. It was free and the view was beautiful, reminded me a lot of Lookout Mountain back home in Colorado. Windy, tight road can be anxiety inducing for some people especially with other drivers wanting to go fast. But there was plenty of parking up top and also seemed relatively handicap accessible which is a huge bonus. Plenty of side stops off the road if you prefer to be around less people.

I consider this Dobbins Lookout in South Mountain to be the best place if want to see the best view of Phoenix City, this mountain its so big and have different options to get up there, you can drive all the way up there and see the scenic view of the entire city or you can chose a trail if want to hike and have an amazing hike experience one of the trail that will take you up there is Holbert trail 2.5 miles.

Absolutely gorgeous view of the Valley from Dobbins Lookout at South Mountain. The windy roads leading up to the summit are easily driven, but look out for horse riders and hikers around the bends, share the road. Great place to take the family for pictures, plenty of trails.

Go to this place at sunset and hang around till nightfall. You get the best view of the sunrays beaming over the clouds and dropping on the mountains. Lights from the city and the purple sunset background the awesome.

Amazing view! Plan for the ride up, it's 4 miles of winding roads at 15-25 mph. Worth every minute. Word of caution to those who have extreme fear of heights like me. I was a little anxious, lol!

Great experience standing atop a giant rock. Sometimes we went sort of up and down the rock for fun. There is a lot of shrubbery around. Don’t step on a cactus or you’ll be hurt.

This popular destination is about 40 minutes from downtown, including the 15 minutes drive from the park entrance up a winding paved road. The spot as such offers an excellent panoramic view of the beautiful landscapes & the mountain ranges surrounding Phoenix. For those curious to explore the mountain stretches in the distant sight, the efforts made by the government doesn't go unnoticed. You can sure see a 360 degree dial kind of an installation that indicates the names of the mountains spread in each direction. The setting sun litting the whole valley in golden light is a sight to watch. You don't want to miss it. Maybe the beauty here had attracted way too many tourists that the crowd is extremely high in the evening's. You would be lucky to get a parking spot. Also, looking inside oneself gets a little tough with the crowd despite the peace the whole set up naturally offers, you try a little harder, it's yours. ?? I had been with my family and we all enjoyed it. I took my flask with a very well boiled tea powder and milk and the experience was nothing less a meditation in itself.

Plus, the Women's room had no paper. It was still early in the day when we were there. They need to put LOTS of extra rolls in there as women need to use it every time they use the restroom! Thus only 4 stars instead of 5.

Pretty lookout, but the drive can be scary. Blind turns and cyclists going up steep slopes. I do not suggest this route for bicycles, no shoulder and guardrails on both sides.

We hiked around 9:30AM in January. Weather was great was getting too warm later in the day. Great lookout across the valley. We didn't realize there is a parking lot up top and that we could have driven up, but we would have chosen to hike even had we known because it is scenic. The hike allows dogs too.

This place is BEAUTIFUL!!!! Great spot to bring guests, date night, quiet time or even the family. My daughter, husband and I hiked up the Holbert Trail to reach the top of Dobbins Point!!! Now THAT is the best way to capitalize on the incredible views of this place!!! Check out our YouTube channel (Harper's Journey) for live footage of our hike to the top. BEAUTIFUL SPOT!!! Dobbins is a must see!!!

Great trail, Holbert trail is a nice 2.5 mile hike each way. Takes you up to Dobbins lookout where you can overlook the valley to the North, East, and West. I think the elevation gain is about 1100 feet over those 2.5 miles. My daughter has completed it without me having to carry her at the age of 6 and I've seen lots of other kids on the trail, not sure how far they went but the point is as long as it's not middle of summer kids can do party or all of it, depending. The lookout itself is great for a picnic, you can also just drive to the lookout if you're not into hiking.

  • 5/5 Christian A. 2 years ago on Google
The place was amazing for sunset. Plan on a 15 minute drive from the entrance to the lookout point due to the winding road. Make sure to follow the detour or you will end up going the wrong way. It's also a nice place to hike if you are adventurous.

Great trails, beautiful views, & its free! This is one of my favorite places to visit in Phoenix. Go around dusk, but before 7pm closing time to view the sunsets!

  • 5/5 Miguel J. 2 years ago on Google
Awesome place to see the sunset. Make sure u look up the sunset time and calculate that from the park entrance to the lookout it’s about a 20min drive. We got there early and once the sun started setting it got busy. Restroom on the premises. Take yourself a coffee, plenty of places to sit. Enjoy

  • 5/5 Thais B. 2 years ago on Google
Very cool place for a sunset view/ city lights ! We drove up the mountain which was also exciting ! Definitely recommend but also very crowded !

  • 5/5 Crystal P. 2 years ago on Google
Very great experience, the city is so beautiful as the sun sets and lights all over can be seen! The atmosphere is great! so many different places to sit and enjoy the view from all different angles! Not to crowded. On the way up to Dobbins Lookout however was not the same, they have some kind of construction going on when you first start to make your way up but once you get around it your good. Great views up and down the mountian! Loved it!

  • 5/5 javed00 2 years ago on Google
Great views over Phoenix, it is truly a balcony view. You can see most of Phoenix from here and there are trails for walking. It's a popular spot and finding parking at busy times may be difficult. While wheelchair users can enjoy the views going further in to the small building would be difficult for them. Also it is high up and there are steep drops so children should be supervised. Adults and children were enjoying the views. There are a few benches and most visitors preferred to sit on the rocks /ground to enjoy the view.

  • 5/5 Renee K. 2 years ago on Google
Such a stunning look out, especially going during the sunset time. I came to visit for a weekend and it was the perfect spot to end our trip at. Would definitely recommend, for some great great views!!

  • 5/5 Cheryl J. 1 year ago on Google
Absolutely breathtaking views of the entire Phoenix area. Initially it looks like it is a paid entrance to the park but looks are deceiving completely. Nice upward drive to the top. A little intimidating on some of the curves as you drive up the 2-lane road but stay close to the right side and all will be fine. Speed is definitely a factor so take your time. You can see all of the valley including downtown and beyond. There wasn’t a crowd and parking is easy. There are also a couple of places you stop and pull off the road on the way up which is definitely worth the stop and look. At the bottom there is also a place you can take a horse ride that will take you on a different path through the area.

The curvy drive up to Dobbins Lookout is enjoyable, especially on a motorcycle. The view is sweeping, but not extraordinary. I would still recommend it, though. Very doable from the Phoenix metro area and you have some time to kill.

  • 5/5 Heather M. 1 year ago on Google
Beautiful mountain!! The sights are amazing!! Lots of hiking trails and I believe you can even rent horses for trail riding.....maybe we will someday.

Dobbins lookout at the top of South Mountain has outstanding views of the valley. It over looks Phoenix, Scottsdale and Tempe area. It's a was a fun drive to the top. Went on a Monday afternoon and wasn't crowded.

  • 5/5 Ashley B. 10 months ago on Google
Beautiful views, no cost, and easy to reach! We drove up to Dobbins Lookout and it took about 15 minutes to reach the top in our car. The turns are pretty sharp but are easy to navigate. We went earlier in the day so it wasn't to hot. There were some individuals selling jewelry and pottery at the very top.

  • 5/5 Brock M. 11 months ago on Google
This place was such a beautiful place to watch a sunset. Probably one of the best locations in Arizona. Plus you can drive up to it very easily as well as hike through a ton of different trails. Dobbins is entirely free as well as has a lot of parking.

  • 5/5 Tara B. 2 years ago on Google
This was my 2nd visit and it was just as amazing as the 1st. Lots of Families and I noticed the children really loved it. Children clearly are fearless however, as adults we are very cautious of the rocks. Take a friend, family or go alone...either way, it's worth the drive. Oh, PSA: DO NOT drive drunk or under any influence going up or down the mountain.

  • 5/5 Marco P. 10 months ago on Google
Really cool spot to come hang out night and day. They have more then just dobbins point where you can go park get out and hike around, one much smaller area that has a lot of nice flat trails and the other is by the antennas and has a much bigger area to park and a bunch of trails to hike down also you see everything south of south mountain dobbins points shows everything north.

  • 5/5 Karine B. 11 months ago on Google
Really enjoyed my short visit. I had couple of hours before my flight and took a drive to the top at the Dobbin's lookout. Just the drive was mesmerizing. Don't forget a bottle of water and gre shoes to walk around.

  • 5/5 Dan m. 11 months ago on Google
Beautiful spot to watch the sunset, lights of Phoenix come on, and planes land. Wasn't free or too expensive to drive up. Bring food and drinks. Plan on not leaving until after dark 30

  • 4/5 Barbara Primous J. 1 year ago on Google
The lookout has been updated to include new amenities such as more seating, more gazebos, and new restrooms. There is a jewelry vendor. There are also christian evangelists proselytizing. The views are strictly amazing, especially for long time residents who will recognize the exponential growth of the city.

  • 5/5 Anirudh M. 7 months ago on Google
A neat place to visit for sunsets. The drive up to this point is kinda neat with the view of the valley to one side and cliffs on the other. If the weather is nice, you can park by the park entrance and hike up to the view point. The hike's not too bad either.

  • 5/5 Dominique C. J. 6 months ago on Google
The lookout is GORGEOUS beyond measure. Prepare to have many tourist and locals up here. Some people are rude and impatient yet that is obviously expected. Parking is the only real issue and you have opportunity to buy fruit and food from peoples cars as well.

  • 5/5 Stephen D. 6 months ago on Google
Wonderful vistas. Easy access. Worth the drive. Worth it unless you are scared of mountain driving with narrow, curvy switchback roads. I had follow a seemingly terrified driver and there is no passing. I haven't had a motorcycle for years and never missed it until that drive. I saw a lot of bikers and I was jealous of all of them- sport bikes and big dressers alike. If I make it back to Phoenix I will come back to this spot.

  • 5/5 Huzefa K. 5 months ago on Google
We came from Michigan. And have to say the views were fantastic. It does get very crowded around sunset. And they close the gates to the Park after 7pm. So don’t come late otherwise you won’t be able to get to the top.

  • 5/5 Sam 3 months ago on Google New
Absolutely beautiful drive up the mountain, with an easy but curvy road. This is a great place to visit regardless of if you’re looking for a scenic drive or panoramic views of the city.

  • 5/5 Jussane C. 4 months ago on Google
The most beautiful sunset in Phoenix. They have handicap parking and a handicap ramp where you can see a beautiful view. Parking is Very limited to see the sunset I will recommend arriving 1 hour in advance. I purchased some Navajo jewelry made by Navajo artisan's.

Dobbins lookout in the evening is beautiful...today we drove up to see the lights after the sun went down... beautiful view of the whole valley...could sit up here all night if allowed...I recommend you come check it out for yourself...there is also a hiking trail to the lookout called holbert trail...it's 2.5 up and 2.5 down...I'll get some pics of that next time...
