Phoenix Society of Historical Swordsmanship

Gym Martial arts club Fencing school

👍👍 I've been coming to the Phoenix Society since August of last year (8/2022-10/2023 so far). It's a wonderful community, swordfighting is a really fun way to work out, we practice historical fencing systems based on primary sources, and the teachers are all fantastic at both fighting and teaching. Lot... People often mention club, martial,

Perfect for beginners, the folks at the club will always make sure that beginners are fully comfortable, and feel safe before "throwing you to the wolves" so to speak lol. This club is perfect for anyone, whether you're a combat sports athlete looking to cross train (like Bruce Lee once did with fencing,) or just someone who's always wondered how hard the Dragonborn is actually working to slay Daedra (spoiler, pretty dang hard,) or someone inbetween. If you live anywhere close to here, whether you come here seeking to cut under the supervison of a champion cutter, or for a long and challenging cardiovascular and muscle endurance session, or to receive a traditional art from a passionate group of martial artists from varying backgrounds, you have to check this place out, even just once.

Best way to learn about how to sword fight in the valley. They go by a number of historical texts, which are essentially memoirs of hundreds of years of successful sword fighters. Other clubs kinda do their own thing and get absolutely dunked on by this one. If you're interested I recommend checking them out. Low cost, friendly, available regularly.

I'm a regular participant because the people are welcoming and fun to train with and the instructors are knowledgeable and respectful. The biggest reason, however, is that sword fighting is amazing, and there is a lot to be had here.

I've been coming to the Phoenix Society since August of last year (8/2022-10/2023 so far). It's a wonderful community, swordfighting is a really fun way to work out, we practice historical fencing systems based on primary sources, and the teachers are all fantastic at both fighting and teaching. Lots of loner gear which means you can start sparring as soon as you feel ready. Everyone works together to become better fencers, and the experienced students always help newer folks. People of most body types can get really good at HEMA when they find a fencing style which complements their natural strengths. Mordhau Historical Combat does the German KdF fencing tradition, while we focus on Italian sources like Fiore and Giganti. They're another great option if you live closer to Mesa, less loaner gear but very welcoming, with really good fighters and great teachers. I personally would recommend PSHS first. Beginner-friendly Mon. night longsword, Thurs. rapier, Fri. saber all 7-9 PM, sparring on Wed. 7-9 and Sat. 10-1 PM

An excellent club focused on teaching armed martial arts from European traditions. Having been part of the club for 3 years, and practicing martial arts for 10+ years, it is undoubtedly one of the most positive and generous clubs I have been a part of. There is regular sparring, technical analysis, scholarship, and community. Loaner gear is available for new club members, and is very affordable to attend. The club also has relationships with equipment vendors to get you discounts on your own gear. If you are interested in the historical fighting arts of Europe, come on down and give the club a try.

This is where I started doing HEMA! The people are awesome and the instructors are some of the most skilled and knowledgeable martial artists around. Friendly and fun atmosphere and excellent classes and sparring. If you like swords then you need to come here.

Great atmosphere and has a lot of fun people and authentic techniques. Chris is my favorite coach. I've always had a good time and would recommend it to anyone looking to get into swordfighting, or anyone looking to get active in an interesting way.

I have spent the last ten years experiencing different martial arts and PSHS has been one of the most rewarding experiences that I have stuck with. You will learn to appreciate weapons, martial arts, and how you study them within their historical context. Even if you're taking another martial art, the information you learn from this context is very helpful in honing your skills. The sparring you participate in gives you a real scenario and excellent feedback on your strengths and weaknesses. The folks that train are very helpful with constructive criticism and always willing to help. Richard, John, and Chris are fantastic ambassadors for the HEMA community and your time at PSHS will be a great opportunity to learn, whether a beginner or an experienced fighter.

Great club filled with great people. Not to mention a wide variety of fencing options as well as instructors encouraging and helping students on their own individual journey within hema.
