Dresden
Castle
is
one
of
the
oldest
buildings
in
Dresden.
Already
in
the
12th
century
there
was
a
small
castle,
as
evidenced
by
the
foundations
under
the
main
tower.
In
1382,
the
residence
was
enlarged,
in
1471
the
present
west
wing
was
erected.
When
Dresden
became
the
permanent
residence
of
the
rulers
in
1485,
the
medieval
castle
was
rebuilt
into
a
Renaissance
building.
In
1530,
a
representative
residential
castle
was
erected
at
the
height
of
the
northern
gate.
In
1547,
the
castle
was
rebuilt
in
the
Renaissance
style.
After
a
major
fire
in
1701,
castle
was
rebuilt
in
the
Baroque
style.
More
rebuilding
took
place
between
1889
and
1901.
On
the
night
of
February
13/14,
1945,
during
the
allied
air
raid
on
Dresden,
the
castle
was
bombed
and
burnt
down.
The
multi-phase
reconstruction
lasted
until
2004,
when
the
castle
was
made
available
to
visitors.
Today,
the
castle
holds
a
museum
complex
that
contains
the
Historic
and
New
Green
Vault,
the
Numismatic
Cabinet,
the
Collection
of
Prints,
Drawings
and
Photographs
and
the
Dresden
Armory.
It
also
houses
an
art
library
and
the
management
of
the
Dresden
State
Art
Collections.
