COSTAMED Playa del Carmen

Hospital • Doctor • Specialized hospital

😠 I’m waiting here in playa del Carmen with my daughter who wants piece of mind with earache. I used the Tulum branch last week for a similar issue and had a good experience, but in this branch it is different management. They make up the prices depending on how much they think you will be able to pay... People often mention hospital, care, time, service, received, medical, emergency, Costamed, staff, needed,

It is worst experience in our life! Never go to this hospital! Only thing what they are worried about is they money! I’m not sure, why the rate is more then 3*! What do you think is the price for 1 extra night after child birth? I was literally knocked down, they wanted to charge me 2500USD per night! Without showing any official price list and was pushing me to pay faster... we asked to keep the temperature in the room comfortable for mother and baby, but they were always switching on the A/C and make them freeze, the nurses are another story ...think twice before you go to the Costamed!

I was seen for a medical emergency (brought in via ambulance) which landed me a three day stay at CostaMed. I am very happy with the care I received during my stay. The hospital staff and physicians communicated well with my family in the US and with my friends that were traveling with me. Unfortunately I needed a blood transfusion and they worked efficiently with the blood bank getting what I needed very quickly. While I did pay a deposit upon arrival, they did not hesitate to give me all of my paperwork from my stay- including all labs, diagnostic tests etc and advised me to send all of this to my insurance once I got back to the states so I could be reimbursed. Overall, I would highly recommend this hospital to anyone traveling and needing great care. The US consulate is a short distance from the hospital and a representative from there even walked over to the hospital to make sure all was being taken care of. When I returned to the US and followed up with my doctors each of them were extremely pleased with the level of care I received. Thanks to everyone that played a role in my care!

I’m waiting here in playa del Carmen with my daughter who wants piece of mind with earache. I used the Tulum branch last week for a similar issue and had a good experience, but in this branch it is different management. They make up the prices depending on how much they think you will be able to pay and tried to charge 70% more for the same initial consultation which is supposed to be standard. They said they would check with management to offer the same cost and I waited another 40 minutes to be told they couldn’t. Highly unprofessional and would look for another medical centre.

This is hopefully a constructive review. I paid for a blood test and to be honest, I probably expected much better service in general. Nobody really knew why I was there, I wasn't given very clear instructions, I felt the staff were very loose in terms of understanding my appointment. I ended up waiting in a place when nobody notified me, so I had to ask again. The staff/guy taking my blood was wearing ripped jeans which I felt was unprofessional for a supposed better hospital/medical center in Mexico. The price doesn't represent the service in my opinion and I hope they try and fix this issue. I was left thinking I could have just gone to a backstreet clinic in Playa del Carmen which might cost a fraction of the price. I don't know if Mexicans accept this level of service, however I think foreigners may expect more for the price if you ask me. It's not that cheap although in the USA it's scandalous obviously.

I can't understand the good reviews. I had an accident with a sea urchin and wanted to have my foot examined at this clinic. Unfortunately, no one, except one person, could speak English with me or my husband. Everything really took forever. An X-ray was taken and the foot was examined a bit. I didn't get any treatment. The whole thing cost me 700 dollars. Back in Europe, I was treated wonderfully at my local hospital, although they have no experience with sea urchins. That's why I can't recommend this clinic.

I came here at night with my small daughter who had to get some stitches on her head. Everyone was very nice, and what is most important to me - fast! I was in and out in 30 mins. They helped me to get a cab too. No unnecessary paperwork, no crazy prices, my daughter didn’t even cry. This is better service than NYC. The doctor was very caring and professional, the rest of the stuff were very helpful.

The worse experience. I felt really bad and I asked to go to the emergency room, they made me wait for almost half an hour and they sent me to a consultation, I insisted again that I wanted to go to the emergency room, they ignored me, they referred me to give me a medication in the office and it did not work, For the third time I asked to go to the emergency room, I felt horrible, and they told me that I could only go if I left a 20,000 deposit, they never mentioned this to me since I arrived asking to go to the emergency room, they are thieves and inhumans, because at that moment I did not have that amount, so they took me out of there and I still felt bad, they didn't solve anything and they wanted me to sign a paper for not taking me to the emergency room as if it had been my fault. I do not recommend this hospital at all, it only appears to be quality and does not have it.

Everyone here was very kind and helpful. We where on vacation and I got an injury to the head. We can’t speak much Spanish. They where so nice though. They found translators super fast. The dr was very kind. We where originally referred to another hospital. The other hospital didn’t have good reviews. So we came here. I’m so glad we decided on this hospital! Thank you for being so kind to us. ❤️

Yesterday I received a phone call from someone traveling on the ultramar ferry from Cozumel to Playa del Carmen. They found an unconscious woman who could not be woken up when the ferry docked. She was an employee of mine who someone recognized. One minute she was engaged in conversation with the people around her and the next minute she was out cold. An ambulance was called and she was in route to costamed PDC. I immediately phoned Cozumel Costamed and spoke to International Patient Liaison Andrea Sekula who put me in direct contact with Audrey the patient service manager in PDC. Audrey was waiting for the ambulance when it arrived, located the patients father and kept me informed every step of the way. If not for the excellent communication and extra steps Audrey took to bring everyone together to help this young woman, this would have been a chaotic mess. Happy to say the patient is now fine and we are all so grateful to Audrey and Andrea for their immediate action when we were all helpless and in a state of panic.

After trekking to three different hospitals via taxi and crutches with a fractured foot, we finally made it to Costamed - SO happy to have landed at this place. I was triaged, given X-rays and diagnosed in under 2 hours - this included a personal consultation with our wonderful doctor to ensure we had all the info we needed and were aware of our options. Yes, it’s more expensive - it’s a private facility - but if you choose to travel abroad without health insurance, then you’re taking the risk that you might need to pay a looot of money to get seen in a timely manner, or head to one of the general hospitals and wait it out. Our MD was one of the nicest doctors we have met - thank you again!

Earlier this year I was in the Emergency Room for myself. Honestly I was in so much pain I didn’t really register much other than I was in good hands. Recently, my visiting mother had an accident and needed emergency care. I had no doubts about taking her to Costa Med. I was a bit of a mess with worry, I couldn’t think clearly. My mom doesn’t speak much Spanish and she’s 74 years old. From the moment we arrived we received excellent care. They were kind and gentle with her, the nurses and staff cared for her like they would a loved one. The Doctor spoke several languages and was very patient with me as I explained things in more detail to my mom (who was in a lot of pain, but didn’t want mediation for the pain). We have had follow up appointments with the Doctors here and continue to have amazing care. I want to also make a special thanks to the support staff and to Victor (reception manager I think). He was very helpful in supporting us with our follow up care, scheduling appointments and helping us with making sure we had the correct payment information. This extra touch of compassion and support makes all the difference in the world. We were treated like VIPs at very affordable prices. Thank you CostaMed for taking such good care of my mom.

I wish to express my profound satisfaction and heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Cinthya Anaya, Dr. Francisco Sandoval, and the entire healthcare team, encompassing nurses and support staff, who attended to my medical needs on August 30th, 2023, the day I inadvertently suffered a shoulder dislocation. The collective efforts of this exceptional team were instrumental in ensuring that I received not only physical treatment but also emotional support during what was undoubtedly a traumatic experience. Their unwavering care, patience, and support played pivotal roles in providing me with a sense of calm and confidence as I underwent a shoulder reduction procedure. I must emphasize that the level of service and care I received during my hospital stay was truly exceptional and ranks among the finest I have encountered. I would like to extend my deepest and most heartfelt gratitude once again for their exceptional care during that critical moment. Sincerely, Victor Luis Costa

If you have to visit a hospital in Playa del Carmen, this is where you want to go. They take care of you, keep you safe, speak to you plainly in English, they are quick… just a fantastic hospital. They truly make a bad situation (going to the hospital) as positive as possible. Talk to Carolina Armas; she is an incredible advocate for you, the patient, and the family. She will make sure you have what you need. Thank you Carolina!

The only area that I had problems with was discharge. Paper work all done. I can go. Nope. I still have a catheter. Catheter is not coming out until I make another payment. My health travel insurance was given to them. I did my part. Still insurance was ignored. As I see it I was held hostage till my credit card had no more credit that could go on it. 9 Days. 29,000.00 U S. Why would they not go through my insurance I still don’t know. I asked for a advocate on my behalf though never happened. I was left with no credit. No way of getting a flight home. Friends and family had to help. Medical care nurses, kitchen staff cleaning all great. Discharge was horrible.

I went there at a Saturday evening after cutting in my hand. First of all it was super fast, after 8-10 minutes I the doctor was there to help me. After ten minutes she stitched my wound and I could leave. Maybe not the cheapest one in town 120 usd for consultation and stitching but the experience was great. Can’t really say that I can recommend a hospital but if you need one it good. At least for me :D

We had a medical emergency while on a cruise. Costamed picked us up at the cruise terminal in Puerto Costa Maya in an ambulance and drove us almost 5 hours to Playa del Carmen. Dr. Valle was beyond incredible in her care, bedside manners, and skill. We were also VERY impressed with Audrey and Carolina - our two patient advocates. They brought us dinner at around midnight, responded to every request. The facilities are outdated compared to most US medical facilities and there seems to be a lack of supplies (it took us almost a full day to get a pillow, for example), but overall we were delighted with the care we received. They were angels of mercy during a life-threatening emergency.

I went to Costamed Playa del Carmen and had a consultation with Dr. Manuel FernĂĄndez MuradĂĄs regarding an ear infection and sinusitis issues. The treatment received was very efficient and speeded up my recovery. The medical unit is very well equipped with the latest technology and I was able to see in real time on the cameras the inflamation from my ears and nose. The doctor's explanations were very useful in understanding what is happening. As a scuba diving instructor that has been in several medical facilities worldwide with similar issues, I highly recommend Dr. Manuel FernĂĄndez MuradĂĄs.

My husband was injured on our vacation with a brain injury. We were lucky to find Costamed Playa del Carmen. Upon arrival my husband was admitted to ICU where he received excellent care. Dr. Buensuseso was excellent as well as the neurosurgeon, Dr. Cervantes. Patient services, Bryant Hernandez took great care of me and gave amazing support while I spent many days at the hospital. I am so thankful we ended up being treated here.

I arrived from Canada for a two week vacation and on my first day here in the morning, I ended up falling and thought I broke my foot. From the moment I walked in the door of Costamed Playa del Carmen, I was met with complete professionalism. The admission clerk was so polite and helpful advising me of the wait times, how my insurance works in the clinic, etc. The wait time was so minimal. Less than 15 minutes. I had X-rays taken to confirm my foot was not broken. Dr. Luis Guillermo was absolutely amazing and did everything to make sure I was comfortable. He showed me my X-rays and did a cortisone injection along with an anti inflammatory injection. He explained the medication I should purchase and told me that I could come back and would be seen immediately, if I needed to. The cost was very reasonable for an out of country hospital. In no way did I feel overcharged for the quality of care I received. Thank you Dr. Luis Guillermo and staff who helped me. I’m happy to say that I’m enjoying my vacation in Mexico, thanks to this wonderful team and hospital.

TOURIST BEWARE!! I felt compelled to write this review as I do not want someone else to experience the same faith. I will also make it brief. I went to Costamed in Playa del Carmen on June 16, 2023 to have an exam in an institution that one would think provide compassion and care for their patients. This was not the experience I received on June 16, for which I was charged an enormous amount of close to $ 750 USD, then on June 17 they decided I needed another exam that supposedly cost less than the previous one. At the reception my Visa card would not accept their supposed refund in the difference between the two exams, a women name Carolina Armas proudly says her title patient service executive who spoke adequate amount of English told me “ I assure you, your card has been credited give it a few days” speaking to her one would think she was sincere and truly genuine PLEASE BEWARE!! On July 6 I advised her my doctors in the USA & MEXICO could not read the results of neither the test that was done at Costamed the clarity, images was blurry and fuzzy. They found the studies useless and requested a repeat at another facility, I also advise her there was still no money credit to my visa which was suppose to be $ 260 USD approx. She continued to say “ give it a few more days I am going to speak to the head cashier”. One month now past it is July 17, 2023 still no REFUND. Since she got tired of my inquiries every few days she gave my number to another woman name Veronica Alvarez an administrative secretary who started writing to saying the same “ talk to your bank we have sent the refund” over and over again. My bank which is international and NOT a Mexican bank as most tourist would be, finally my bank was frustrated they issued me a statement of my account to present to Costamed so they could see that there was no CREDIT made to my visa but instead a charge of $ 719 USD on July 16, 2023. One last note while I was at the hospital the gentleman who was the receptionist I overheard telling another patient, it has been a very slow year patients wise and the tourism in the area has been quite low and some people have had to take reduction in salary or let go, but because of his years of service he was able to fortunately maintain the same salary and his employment . It is with great sadness and disappointment that being in the medical field myself that I felt the great need to bring this to the attention of the public. This hospital and those two women lacks integrity and professional ethics. Please there are far much better and more compassionate hospital in Playa del Carmen make the choice go to Hospiten, or Amarimed , they will not STEAL from their clients in a time especially when they are vulnerable.

CostaMed was wonderful!!! Most speak some English (hint use google translator if needed). Everyone we encountered was helpful and friendly. The wait time to be released was very reasonable for a hospital. Glad to know they are there when needed!

I highly recommend this hospital. We had an emergency during our vacation here and this hospital took great care! The doctors are great , patient and even follow up via WhatsApp after the appointment. If you have any emergencies or need medical assistance this is the place to go. The receptionist Karen and Yazmin were friendly and arranged taxi for us as Spanish is not a native language for us.

Carolina Armas was a fantastic patient service rep. My mother had an accident while on a cruise in Cozumel. It was very scary and stressful coping with an emergency in a foreign land. Thankfully Carolina was there to support not only my mother (the patient) but also all the other family members. She provided so much help and patience. truly a blessing. Thank you Carolina.

The doctors and nurses are great. The admin team sucks a bit. It takes ages to get green light to leave (which they prefer to blame on the insurance company), and they tried to charge us twice for paediatrician despite both us and the doctor saying it was covered by the doctor. And getting a factura sent on time is like getting blood from a stone. Plus their policy of not letting children in to see their newborn siblings is ridiculous.

I tried to reach them on the phone to get information for several days in a row in different times, they never answered the phone. They also offer you to leave a voice message in order for they can call you back, they never called back. The first impression of the company isn’t good

Second visit to Costamed - it was close to midnight and needed a pediatric surgeon. We called before we arrived and was told they had one on call. I arrived and the waiting room was full about 15 people waiting and finally after waiting for a long time the receptionist decided to look up and acknowledge i was there waiting. I asked to confirm they had a pediatric surgeon on call - she told no they don't. So i left. Disappointed was told two different stories as I wasted valuable time visiting for no reason. Also disappointed as last time I visited Costamed they were very helpful and friendly and costs were decent for a resident. This time not so much. No comment on the medical attention as we didn't get past the reception desk. If we had decided to stay there were no seats in waiting room and people waiting outside. Waiting area is very small.

I have seen Dr Jorge Alberto BĂĄrcenas for a few years now for my disc hernia and I have been happy with the care I have received. He is very knowledgeable, polite and takes time to answer all my questions. The only reason why I'm rating his service 4 stars is because sometimes the wait time can be long and his receptionist a bit rude.

We were very please with all of the staff. Salvador from patient services was a absolute god send! He checked on us every single day, multiple times each day while my grandmother was in the hospital. He took care of everything we needed, got answers to all of the questions we needed even though some of them took alot of time on the phone. He also made sure I was okay as a visitor staying here with my grandmother and got me anything I needed as well. When we had to come back to the hospital due to our air ambulance not being able to fly because of weather he called me himself and talked to the ambulance drivers and made sure they brought us back. He is one of the kindest, sweetest people I have ever met and he really helped us alot through this difficult time. He went above and beyond. Dr. Espinosa was also amazing. He spent much time on the phone with our insurance company getting things arranged for us and was very honest and upfront with us. He checked on my grandmother often and we could tell he was a very knowledgeable doctor, he was also very kind. We can not thank either of them enough. They are major assets to your hospital!!! The nursing staff were also all great! The security guard who worked in the mornings was also very very kind. He had to let me inside many many times and never seemed tired or irritated about having to open the door for me....ALOT. He was very kind and always had a smile each time he greeted me. Thank you to your hospital for everything!

Canadian emerg nurse here, so well versed in emergency departments. Our 6 year old required sutures and was recommended by our resort doctor to go to CostaMed. We were in and out in 2.5 hours; a quick breeze compared to Canadian hospitals. The nurses and doctor were fantasic- same care I'd have expected at home. The doctor was so patient and gentle with my daughter and did a great job suturing her back together. Special thanks to Lisette who helped translate for us to the triage nurse, and who helped us get a ride home. She was do kind and went above and beyond for us. We were apologized to profusion for the Ling wait time, to which we replied we are used to triple that time at home. Highly recommend this place to anyone needing medical care. The price was much cheaper then we expected and we are grateful for the cleanliness, kindness, and knowledgeable competence of this hospital. Would absolutely return if we need.

Carolina was very helpfull and answered all of my questions. She was very polite and attentive, always with a big smile, not to mention that her english was very good since I only know a few words in spanish. All in all, she was very professional but laid back. I wish all people were like that.

COSTAMED is the place where to go for help and care. Simply - the best! My mama is very active and beautiful woman but in her age (78y.o.) the hip fracture that caused by accidental falls is very serious problem . She has been very fortunate to have received care and surgery from Dr. Jorge Barcenas . She was immediately admitted to the Hospital COSTAMED(emergency) in Playa del Carmen, Mexico. I feel so blessed that he was on duty at this time. Dr Barcenas did everything to make my mom feel better immediately. He is an amazing doctor. He does speak fluent English, my mom doesn’t but with his smile, attitude and hugs he made her feel that she was going to beat the situation, heal and walk again. Everyone there were helpful and also very professional and have helped her and me get through a few rough days’. I have and would recommend COSTAMED, and Dr. Jorge Bárcenas and his team to anyone local or just visitor who needs immediate, professional emergency attention or surgery. One thing for sure they will receive all the help needed to overcome injuries and pain.
