This Hospital is a SCAM. Read from another traveler: I want to share a horrible experience with the hospital amerimed here in Playa del Carmen . They kept me captive against my will for 9 hours . I had a simple planed surgery there on my leg paid with my insurance MetLife . I needed to spend 5 hours in the hospital from 5am to 10am. The the insurance company had an approval letter ahead of time and also sent a final approval of the hospital charges by email to the hospital at 12pm. Usually you need the final approval to be discharged from the hospital . .So here comes a typical scam of foreigners. The hospital tells me that they did not receive this letter and cannot discharge me . I called my Insurance several times , they even sent the same letter to me. But they said that the rules dictate that it must come from the insurance itself . So I was kept captive in my hospital room for 9 hours against my will( doctor discharged me at 11 am ). I tried to leave several times and got Assaulted by the security guards . They pushed me and threatened to hit me . They wanted me to pay 80,000 pesos cash in order to leave or wait until my insurance send them the letter which’s they did more than once . I called my lawyer and she said it’s considered kidnapping . So as an act of desperation I called 911 in front of the hospital’s front desk and they heard the entire call . 5 minutes later someone runs up to me and says the letter has arrived. Which Is very strange indeed . They asked me to call back and cancel my report . They had this letter since 12 pm and were screwing my brains so I get desperate and pay the 80000 pesos to go home . While the insurance covered 100% of the cost with proper paperwork. They were hoping to get the insurance and 80,000 pesos in cash (card payment was not an option ) .I consider this as an act of extortion .Do not fall for the same things if you have insurance . The hospital cannot keep you away from leaving , even without pay . It’s illegal and they do it only to foreigners . Just like in other countries , they must make payment arrangements in writing . But they cannot keep you captive until you pay or the insurance pays . Even if the insurance is moving slowly . Be ware of amerimed. I had better experience in playa med and in Hospiten using my insurance .

Please Run! Money hungry hospital! My mother had an accident at xcaret and we were transported to this hell hole by default. I can’t even begin to go in details of how everything was about money first. We had travel insurance and they couldn’t wait for the insurance to kick in but requested we pay 6k US dollars on the spot or we leave while my mother needed life saving oxygen. They waited till around 10:30pm to fax my travel insurance the hospital records (we came in at 2pm) and then decided an half hour later to demand money upfront. Long story short, I ended up paying $3300 usd plus and was still put out at 12am midnight. We had to pay for a private ambulance $500usd to take us to Cancun where I had to keep my mom until the next day to get admitted to another hospital. I’ll always remember what this place did in a time of total despair. Run if you’re a tourist. Only nice people were the cardiologist and daytime security guard who allowed my 11 year old to sleep outside on the sofa while they detained us because they refused to wait for the insurance to do a payment guarantee due to the late documentation they sent.

**WARNING** Extortion is at its finest here!! They took my family member and demanded $35,000 for treatment. This place is Not Safe for Americans, they hold your loved ones Hostage while demanding more cash from your friends and family, even if you have insurance. The American Embassy refuses to help. Stay Away!!!! 0 Stars!!

I recently had abdominal surgery as an in-patient. The entire process from billing arrangements, pre-op appointments, actual surgery day went smoothly. The hospital administration worked with my insurance company for a guarantee of payment and were very willing to do so. The surgery is a great success with minimal to no pain. I took a shower the day after surgery! An absolutely positive experience. Thank you, AmeriMed!

We had to come and get x rays because my son fell while we were staying at xcarat. I was very nervous after reading the reviews. Overall the price was much better than the reviews had me dreading. Timewise it did take a little while but that’s anything with paperwork and healthcare no matter where you are at. The communication about the pricing was very clear and effective.

Today on May 19th, I came in to get my daughter's stitches removed. Upon entry the receptionists were very courteous and helpful. I forgot some documents and they went out of their way to help us. They stated the cost could vary but around $600. As I was waiting with my wife I happened to check the reviews. I became a bit worried because all I saw were negative reviews. Over charge, bad service, and so on....I told my wife about it and told her I was going to be afraid to see the bill and she chuckled. The staff and doctor tended to my daughter with the upmost professionalism and cortousy. And when they gave me my bill it was $338.00. so it was less. All too often we only write the negative, I myself never write anything. But I noticed the only negative individuals seemed to be the foreign ( U.S.) Karen's. Unfortunately, my countryman. Oh well, my family and I are grateful for their service and care.

On Aug 17, 2022, I was sent to Ameri Med hospital by my hotel Doctor for an eye injury during my holiday. My vision at the time was merely 30%. Doctor Benjamin and the nurse took my blood pressure and vitals to make sure I was stabilized and not in immediate danger, then patiently listened to my medical history. After 45 min or so at the Emergency ward, they advised me that they will have to refer me to another hospital where an Opthalmologist can look after me right away in 2-3 hours. They made the appointment for me and even helped my wife get a taxi. Before we left, my wife asked them "How much do we owe you?" To our pleasant surprise, the staff said there is NO charge since they couldn't help me, couldn't help me? they have done so much, I will forever be grateful. The care, dedication and professionalism was amazing. They all spoke very good English too. Gracias Ameri Med, Dr Benjamin and the 2 nurses from Canada

We were at a waterpark (Xel-ha) when my wife stated having trouble breathing. After a visit to the first aid tent, the staff advised she needed to go to the hospital in an ambulance ASAP, so I chose Amerimed. Then I got there and started reading all of the horrible reviews AND I BECAME TERRIFIED. They require $2000 up front before they start ANYTHING. They don’t want to deal with insurance: they want cash. I sat there and worried like crazy while I imagined the worst: we’d be stuck there for days, at their mercy, not knowing if anything they tell me is true, or if they’re just trying to milk me for every penny I had. Long story short…they found a little pneumonia after a chest X-ray, gave us several prescriptions, and dealt with us professionally. I ultimately left happy after paying a total of $1850. I read so many horror story review that I was freaking out, but ultimately we left happy and felt like they treated us completely fairly

Terrible staff, nobody takes responsibility for the lack of organization. It has been an incredibly frustrating experience dealing with the inept reception team. The facilities are good, but the staff is bordering on useless. Go to a different hospital.

When I arrived at the emergency room, I was administered pain medication very quickly. Then they took X-rays very quickly and I saw the doctor immediately,, the response was quick and efficient. The staff across the hospital was friendly and helpful at all times. When I wanted to leave, the concierge assisted with all aspects of the transfer, which was quite complicated. Her help was excellent.

My husband fracture his ankle and we were fortunate to have been sent here. The fist person I came in contact with was Alexander at the reception desk and he was so kind and professional the entire time. The facility is clean and the doctor was great. I would say an area of opportunity is with the nurse team. My husband had to stay two nights and we had to move rooms one of the nights. This area needs more attention and the nurses need more training in some basic functions of the room, like how to work the TV and how to convert the sofa into bed. Over all we had good service and Alexander made it a great experience. Thank you for all you did.

I am so thankful for the nurses, doctors and all the staff at this hospital. I was extremely sick, and speak very little Spanish. Every person made a big effort to communicate with me the best they could, and helped me understand them. Every person was kind and gentle with me, patient with me, and took excellent care of me when I was in a desperate situation, very far from home. The facility itself is IMMACULATELY CLEAN, absolutely beautiful. The equipment used also immaculate and all new and top of the line. I felt so very fortunate to be in their care. I wish I could remember everyone's name to thank them personally but believe me when I say that from the triage nurses, the porter, the nurses and doctors, even the cleaning staff- all personnel were just wonderful. I could give many many examples of kind thoughtfulness, but here is just one or two.. I had to use the washroom and had bare feet, when the porter saw me walking to the washroom he didn't want my feet to be cold so he hurriedly opened a package of slippers and put them on the floor at my feet for me. Seriously. How thoughtful!! And because I was so high fevered I was a bit delirious and walked quite unsteadily so at any moment a nurse or someone would offer me their arm to help me. I needed to be sick in the washroom, and an administrative staff member asked if he could assist me. Seriously. Oh and regarding the insurance covering my stay, we didn't have to lift a FINGER. The staff just took our policy number and took care of everything. If you are sick anywhere near Playa del Carmen and can either afford it or have proper insurance coverage, please do yourself a favor and go here. Deb Kühl from Canada

Brought my father here based on the recommendation from the doctor at the hotel. He'd had two seizures and hit his head during recovery (all at the hotel). He was seen very quickly but after the CT scan, one of the doctors told us he had a spot on his brain that could be a brain bleed that might require emergency surgery, so they were sending him for an MRI. The MRI was done at 7pm and my dad was kept overnight. We received no status updates for 21 hours; all we knew was he might need emergency brain surgery. We were told different times that the doctor would come by (a six hour time difference) and no one other than the doctor coming at 2pm could give us an update. When the doctor came, he hadn't even put down his jacket but just said "everything's fine, he can go" (I'm summarizing). We were left in limbo, for a patient who has a history of epilepsy and a ruptured aneurysm, with no information for 21 hours. The facilities are quite nice and this place is probably fine for an urgent care type of visit (sprained ankle, UTI, etc) but there was no urgency or attention to timely response for something that could have been major.

Do not recommend this hospital. All the staff we encountered (except one nurse) made it quite obvious they did not want to be there. Terrible bedside manner and customer service. The communication was next to none. They took forever to clean vomit from another patient and water spilt on floor leaving dangerous surfaces patients had to walk around. I have been to costamed / hospiten / playamed and now amerimed. I will never go back there. Even the surgeon who was called to Amerimed (he doens't work there) commented about how they are rude and only care about money. Stay away!!

i'm only giving it 1 star because my doctor was so lovely and i believe she had no idea what type of scam the front desk lady was roping us in to. i went to the amerimed PDC because i started to feel symptoms of a bad allergic reaction to a mosquito bite. my mother filled out all of my paper work as i was too sick to do it myself. she had a bad gut feeling by the front desk lady (she refused to let her back in to see me even though she was already in there with me in the first place. she also was extremely insistent on getting the paperwork back asap, even though my poor mother was just worried for her daughter in the moment). we ended up paying the $450 that was promised was all we needed to pay for the necessary treatment. we asked many times if they were certain that's all we needed to pay and they assured us that was all of it. i was only given a blood test, iv, and a tylenol solution. the lady came back in before we were going to discharge and insisted we pay almost $700 more dollars for "medical equipment". hell no. she tried to tell us we were not allowed to leave and they wouldn't even take the iv out of my arm before we paid the money. she was literally trying to hold us hostage. i almost had to walk out of there with a bloody iv still in my arm before i begged the nurse to take it out. we threatened to call a lawyer or the police and the desk lady just tried to ignore us before we finally were let go. do not be fooled by these people, they will go to great lengths to take advantage of tourists. disgusting.

My son got bit or stung by something at the beach… was in extreme pain… muscles cramping up, etc. we taxied to this place. We waited for 15 min for someone to show up to the ER desk. Turns out he got stung by a sting ray… pretty serious, but all he had was an ibuprofen IV and some vinegar/hot water soak for a couple hours. Our bill: $720 USD!!! 😳

Our travel insurance co recommended this place to take our child (bad cough). The admin people did not seem familiar with the process and, for the most part, I felt uncomfortable because I didn’t know what was going on. After my child was examined by a doctor, A woman who worked at the front desk told me that the charges would be around $1500 USD (“maybe more, maybe less”) for the consult and a nebulizing treatment. That seemed high but I figured if the insurance company was paying it, then it was legit. Once they treated my child, the nurse gave me the mask and solutions for the additional treatments he needed and said I could get a nebulizer at any pharmacy (huh?). After several hours of waiting on the insurance company to get a “verification” (not sure for what, but it was taking forever), I finally decided to just pay out or pocket and submit a claim myself. And miraculously that $1500 turned into $500. I wouldn’t go here again.

I thought I had broken my leg at a resort in Tulum. I was able to message Dr Lopez via WhatsApp from the taxi. He was reassuring on the phone and upfront about costs.. I was immediately processed and taken to the x-ray. Dr. Lopez was very knowledgeable and experienced. I was in and out within an hour.

I feel so sorry to read all those bad reviews while I had an amazing experience, even excellent. First of all it is important to have a health insurance, communicate with them before you leave on holiday what to do when you are ill or in danger. Collect all the information you need in advance so the moment itself you will not experience delay or resentment. Also, you need a credit card so you can pay a deposit. This will be on hold on your card and will be released on your dismissal when everything with your insurance is settled. Do not stress about this! Be aware that the amount of your credit card is more than enough. You can even ask for an extra form that the hospital will release the money on your card as soon as possible. I live on the other side of the world in Europe, so communication due time difference had a small delay. Indeed, you have to wait some time in between while the hospital treats you, this is because someone external is paying for your costs and needs to give an ‘okay’ for every action. So, you are all depending on each other. It’s understandable if you don’t have an insurance, a treatment can not be done and feels not fair. Therefor, check your options before you leave on a holiday, especially in another country. The hospital itself is GREAT. The emergency, the doctors, the nurses, the tests, the room, the food,…It felt like being in heaven while being in such a bad physical state. My husband and I want to thank all the people who made me better again from the bottom of our hearts. We hope that everyone can experience what we had, but please, check everything you need before you leave for your getaway. The hospital really wants to help, but we are unfortunately stuck in a system and this works differently in every country. I got the right prescriptions to recover after a stay of 3 days with a colonoscopy, so I can enjoy the rest of my holiday. It’s true you have to wait for your release in the hospital, but that has only to do with the finalisation between the insurance and hospital. The insurance has to acknowledge the ending of your treatment, as the hospital still not has full certainty of the whole payment. I hope everyone gets an equal opportunity to enjoy universal health care in the future. Cheers and love for humanity!

Cardiología oficina el Dr Lugo 🙅🏼. Never do what I did!!! I did not check google feedback 🤦‍♀️ I made an appointment exclusively for an ultrasound examination of the heart. the doctor refused to do it without a blood test and the day of the appointment. many times that he is a professional (which casts doubt on this). They didn't even ask me about payment when I left. I almost got kicked out when I said I came for a test and not a consultation

I was brought to this hospital from a cruise ship I was traveling on. I have no memory of being taken off the ship, only a bumpy ambulance ride to the hospital in which I was in and out of consciousness. The ambulance stopped twice and opened the back door when 1st a man said they needed 30,000 dollars to do the procedure! I'm thinking, what procedure! The 2nd time a lady got in and said they needed money for the ambulance. The next thing I recall was when I was trying to take the mask off my face because it was blowing hot air in my nose and mouth and was poking me in my eye. A very kind doctor came to me and gently put the mask back over my face and explained why I needed it, he then introduced himself. His eyes were so kind. Suddenly I woke up in a 3 sided glass room, the back wall was solid. There were 2 doors for entering and an ante room where the nurses put on protective gear. I met another doctor who asked my permission to intubate me. I didn't understand what this was and I was so scared. No family, in foreign country, I called my brother and he and the doctor spoke at length. Ultimately it was my decision. I was at the max oxygen level, my organs were at risk of shutting down without proper oxygen to my lungs. I had acute pneumonia with Covid. I declined the procedure because I felt if I was put out and had a tube essentially feeding me oxygen, I would die. My doctor wasn't happy but he continued to treat me. I prayed, and prayed. Gods light is the greatest love, please help me. Over and over. For 2 days barely sleeping. The doctor came to me and said you need to rest and sleep so you can heal. I told him I was afraid. He gave me something to help me sleep. The next day I felt so much better. I continued to pray, and spent 7 days in ICU. I had the appropriate tests and care. These doctors save my life. I would walk to the ends of the earth for these doctors. The administration, not so much. Also, the male nurses need better training.

Had a family emergency while on vacation. The staff were very attentive to our needs and helped us navigate our difficult situation. It's comforting to know my daughter was in good hands even when traveling abroad.

They tried to rip us off because we are tourists. My son was sick and he was forced to take a covid test in order to be allowed to wait in the waiting room. They charged us 77 USD for that when it's only 200 Mexican pesos for a resident and then they charge us 200 USD to see a doctor for 5 minutes only for this doctor to tell us that we need to see a pediatrician.(really captain obvious ?!?) They then wanted $2,000 USD(as a initial deposit)for my son to see a pediatrician. We left and found a clinic for $700 pesos. Do not go there!

Unfortunately, I have to leave a bad review for this place. The receptionist lady was just cold and rude. Didn't speak a word, until came time to charge money. Then she spoke perfect English. Came in with what I thought was food poisoning. So the doctor wanted to order a few tests on me, some of which I felt unnecessary. They were giving me saline fluid (which have electrolytes) but wanted to test electrolytes, which is redundant. Then they wanted to administrator omeprazole and Zofran at insane prices. I had omeprazole and taken it that day. So refused that and asked for an Rx for zofran instead as it can be purchased at cheaper prices. At that point it seems they lost all interest in my well being as they couldn't extort me more. The lady from the front came in, suddenly speaking English, and her the nurse and the doctor try to guilt you. After getting fluids for 45 minutes, they come in give me my test results, say I have dengue, and discharge me. Didn't see the doctor, nothing. Go to Costamed near Playacar.
