Pretends to take your health insurance and then denies it. Asks you to prepay thousands of dollars for treatment or exams for minor injuries that could be resolved by a prescription or minimal care. Works in conjunction with major resorts; the major resorts get kickbacks for sending tourists here. Avoid at all costs, IF YOU CAN. It's probably too late by the time you read this. But if you can, just walk out. Find somewhere else. Read the other reviews with recommendations for different hospitals. Leave while you can.

WARNING: EXPENSIVE AF. This is a tourist trap. Go to "General Hospital of Playa del Carmen" instead - less modern, less fancy but WAY cheaper, and comparable level of service. Read some of the reviews for that hospital. Here at Hospiten, a general doctor's evaluation costs USD250, and a specialist 350. I brought my friend with emergency chest pain (could be acid reflux, could be heart problems), and they wouldn't take him in without an initial 1000 (one thousand) USD deposit. They don't have direct billing arrangements with popular international primary health insurance providers like Aetna (who stopped paying them), or IMG. You need to pay upfront out of pocket, submit the paperwork, and wait for reimbursement. Other than that, the hospital looked pretty clean and modern inside (outside there's a bunch of construction), and the front-desk staff and the doctor spoke English. The doctor seemed knowledgeable. They ran bloodwork screening for heart conditions and the results came back within an hour. The nurse was very slow, but hey, it was 5AM. Worth the 5x - 10x price tag vs. the General Hospital? You decide.

SCAM! The day of our flight back home my daughter fell and hurt her head. The resort doctor at Occidental Xcaret told us that she needs stitches and needs to go to ER asap. She seemed to be very compassionate and said that normally she would charge $170usd, but since she cannot help and ER is needed, she would charge only $14. That tricked us. The resort taxi took us to Hospiten where we ended up paying $3500usd for the stitches. We were rushing for the flight and didn't google the place properly. We also trusted the resort doctor. So bad, we fell for this scam. The same procedure would have cost at least 10 times less in the other hospital. From reading other reviews, I believe that resort doctors get $$ for sending you to Hospiten, making sure you are worried enough to believe in emergency.

I write this in English so that all tourists can understand. This place is a total scam!. I came here today through emergencies, with my own x-ray plates and an Ultrasound of my shoulder. But just to add to the bill they told me I needed more x-ray and a few technical words... The starting bill was 800USD!. And I hadn't seen the Dr yet!. This is made for tourists that don't know other options. I guess this is the place where the resorts take you... Unbelievable!!! In a normal place you would be paying around 100 or less for consultation plus plates...

They are literally thieves. Be careful when going. You will get charged 100x what you should. They charged 15 USD to measure the temperature. They give different prices for tourists and locals. Prices depend on what hotel you are staying so they know how much they can steal from you. Go in case of emergency but be careful you get robbed. THEY DONT TAKE INSURANCE.

My son was brought to this hospital due to dehydration, referred by a doctor from Barcelo hotel. While being transferred via ambulance, an IV drip was set up (as we found out later it was a fake IV drip). Upon arrival, the hospital refused to administer any medical attention until they received a guarantee of payment from our insurance. Despite many attempts to contact the hospital and confirm the guarantee of payment, they could not be reached for several hours, which we later learned was likely due to their attempt to overcharge us (it's way easier for hospital to charge you now with 10x unreasonable bill than to deal with insurance later). It wasn't until after four hours that a real IV drip was set up, and we realized that the hospital was attempting to keep us there for as long as possible. We refused any further medical procedures and escaped the hospital (which took another 90 minutes or so). After experiencing this ourselves and reading reviews, we strongly believe that this hospital is a SCAM, and advise others to stay away and escape as soon as possible if admitted.

AVOID this place at all costs. I was sent here for what the doctor told me was a simple 10 minute procedure to remove a piercing only to be asked for 3,500 dollar deposit for a surgeon to carry out the procedure and give me stitches (not necessary). I declined and asked for a prescription instead (this and the report cost $200). I felt that the staff were abrupt and even though there was only 2 people in the waiting room was waiting an hour and a half to see someone.

I have been in this hospital for a bad cough for roughly 2 days now, it takes forever for anything to get done and I have not been given even a basic pain medication for the chest pain I am experiencing. Do not come here if your resort says you should!! It is obviously a tourist trap instead of an actual hospital. My room is almost the size of my resort room for which I am paying 300 usd a night, do not come here if you have the slightest value for money.

This place is a total scam. They wanted to charge me 1,000 USD to see a doctor for a ear pain that required antibiotics. I was asked to go there by the referral doctor at the Barceló (also from Hospiten) who had already charged me $170 to tell me that I needed a specialist to get the antibiotics because she could not prescribe them. As I came to realize, the work together (hotel Hospiten and clinic) to get people to fall for this scam. I declined the request for payment and went to another private clinic down the road (Costamed) and the cost of a specialist was $80 USD. I could not believe it. When I discussed this with other folks (taxi driver, people at Costamed, etc) they all confirmed that it was a scam. I will bring this up to the Barceló management— this makes the hotel look terrible as they are clearly taking advantage of tourists in a sensitive time, and profiting from insurance companies.

We arrived at 8 pm after our driver said the other hospital is closed for New Years Day. He warned us this is very expensive but my husband had appendicitis so we had no choice. They made us pay $2500 usd for an MRI and then quoted us 39k for the surgery. I questioned the staff and was told it cost more for Americans. They would not call the surgical team till they had 80% of the cost. Surgery finally started about 4 am and by then the appendix was rupturing, causing another night in the hospital. After surgery he got very little attention from the nurses and no visit from the doctor. He did not return to our room till 8 am and he was freezing cold. Our doctor was very kind and did a good job, however, due to the delay in care, the appendix did rupture. Once home it was determined he had an infection. The only reason I gave a star was for the doctor and his kindness. We did leave without staying another night which would have cost us another $7,500.00. I was doing all the care in the hospital anyway.

Worst place ever To all my fellow Americans, do not go to Hospiten. They wont save your life unless you pay first. Even though your dying, they won't take care of you. They deny my wife emergency even though I have a travel insurance to cover costs. It took over an hour for them to verify payment before start treatment. After denying treatment, they hold us against to our will to pay any remaining balance or they call police on us. Nusty service for Emergency Room.

This clinic shamelessly tries to benefit from you or your insurance company by pressuring you to do unnecessary tests and accept expensive hospitalisation for ridiculous reasons. My mom had a rash which, according to a resort doctor, probably was just an allergic reaction but he suggested going to the Hospiten Riviera Maya to do some blood tests to discard a tropical bug bite. He mentioned that this test is very simple and takes some 10 min. This seemed quite reasonable to us, so we decided to go. Here we had an appointment with doctor Alejandro who glanced at the rash from across the table and started rambling about hematoma, haemorrhage, and other terrifying symptoms and insisting that first of all he must accomplish tests to find out what my mom’s health is in general. I asked him what specific tests he is going to do but received no clear answer. The whole appointment took less than 5 mins after which we were directed to a receptionist. The latter asked for our credit card to reserve 1250 USD for the tests. Luckily, I had called our insurance before going to the hospital and had been warned not to pay by ourselves, to get insurance's approval before doing any tests apart from blood, urine, and a few others and - which I thought utterly irrelevant at that moment - to get their approval if the clinic would suggest hospitalisation. It took some time to communicate with the insurance company, but finally the hospital staff sent them the doctor's report and an estimate for approval. When a girl from the reception came to me saying that the insurance refused to pay the amount they requested, I asked what this amount was. Only then it turned out that the hospital asked to cover 5000 USD for admitting my mom to the hospital for one night because they needed... time to do the tests. When I told that hospitalisation is out of question, the staff immediately replied that they can do the same tests in a few hours for 1250 USD. I asked to see doctor Alejandro one more time and asked him again what specific tests he is going to do. However, he wasn't capable of answering the question clearly and kept on brainwashing us about the general health of my mom. That was enough for us and we decided not to proceed with any procedures in this hospital. We were presented with the receipt for the services we already received and found out that this 5-min-across-the-table-inspection of the rash costs 330 USD. The staff insisted further that we would pay by our credit card since the insurance approved only 250 USD for this kind of issue but after we refused they managed to get in contact with the insurance company themselves and get everything paid by the company. We managed to get out of this clinic without any significant loss but a ruined last day of vacation but I believe that people with more serious health problems and under higher stress might agree to everything this clinic suggests, as well as to paying themselves insane costs for unnecessary procedures that later insurances might not cover. And the clinic seems to have no shame in exploiting tourists.

AVOID AVOID AVOID! This place is a SCAM and filled with shameless liars. They try to work you and your insurance over because they think they can. $400 for my family to wait almost two hours (with only one other patient present in the entire wing of the hospital) for 15 minutes of the pediatrician's time and then charged me an additional $125 for a "test" that was the doctor using an otoscope for 2 minutes like they do in every normal doctor's visit (at no "additional charge"). I was promised a refund of $125 that has not been returned to my credit card They will shamelessly take advantage of you and it is their standard method of operation. Go somewhere else if at all possible Edit on Jan 1st, 2024 - I have already emailed the address in the response twice, with no response. Once on the date of the original review and once two days ago. They have not responded and have not refunded my card. They are thieves, scam artists, and liars.

I can only agree with what other people have posted here: don't go to this place. We were referred to this hospital by the doctor at our resort to have my daughter's ear infection checked. They asked me for the credit card, but luckily I inquired about their prices beforehand. They wanted around 900 dollars for the doctor to see her and prescribe medicine. However, I decided to do some research on the internet and discovered that just across the street there is a good hospital with great service called COSTAMED, which charged us only 60 USD for the same service.

My wife & I had to come to the Hospiten while on vacation and we were extremely impressed all around. Yes they’ll hit you with a $1,000-$1,500 USD deposit but when it’s all said & done they only charge for the services provided (which for a private clinic didn’t end up being bad at all) and are so helpful with lining up insurance claims. The staff was absolutely incredible from the front desk to the doctors. As Canadian citizens with a medical scare, it was so reassuring to go to a place with this level of professionalism. Highly recommend, especially to travellers with uncertainty in these situations

This place is a money hungry tourist trap. Don’t go here! Front desk ladies who try to money drain you are 100% sociopaths. They tried everything to deny my medical insurance, so I could pay with my credit card. The one lady giggled when she told me they didn’t recognize the insurance provider and therefore couldn’t use the insurance when I needed it. They used a faulty blood pressure machine on my mom, so it looked like her blood pressure wasn’t coming down. Frightening experience.

Very surprised about the negative reviews. Just want to share experience with our 2 years old daughter. She was not feeling well and suffered from bronchitis and fever. We called in the morning and got an appointment at the same day. Dr. Moro Flores was checking her from up and down and was very lovely to our daughter so she was not even crying during the treatment We got a list which medication we have to take from the pharmacy and she took her time and explained everthing in detail. We have had a very good experience! The costs were 46.50 dollars.

Great for normal care, atrocious for emergencies. Both of our children were born here, their pediatricians are here, and we love them. Have had a great experience with our doctors, Dr. Moro and Dr. Reyes. Highly recommend. For emergency services, it's an absolute joke. Avoid. I needed x-rays on a broken ankle, and they quoted me over $2,000 USD. I ended up paying about $20 in Centro. Last night our 3 year old fell and needed a single stitch in his forehead. We went to Hospiten and were quoted $600 USD as a starting price. That's with the residency discount. We went across the street to costamed, were seen immediately and with great attention for a total of $33.50 USD. Definitely avoid for emergency as it's a total racket.

SCAM Alert! I was instructed by BARCELO medical service to visit the hospital because my daughter had high fever. Initially BARCELO medical service mentioned my insurance works directly with the hospital, as soon as we arrive a Hospiten employee mentioned they do not work directly with my insurance. I asked immediatly how much will be the cost for the first evaluation, intially front desk employee said "I do not know", after 2 minutes they mentioned 400 USD for a general check, when I said this is a SCAM, they changed the cost to 150 USD (3500 MXN). Anyway, it was a clear SCAM as mentioned in other comments, we leave the hospital immediatly to find other option. We paid 500 MXN (30 USD) in COSTAMED Hospital for a general check, good attention. Note: Hospital cost is different if you are non Mexican Citizen.

Make sure your insurance is called ahead and they can send proof of insurance immediately, (not your proof, insurance literally emailing the front desk at hospital) they won’t see you until you do. Had a child in waiting room with a bleeding head wound for 3hrs, before insurance could finally get exactly what the hospital wanted to them. They refused to even stop the bleeding.

This hospital was horrible and seemed to be very money driven. I am still several months later waiting on a refund where they over charged me on my CC. They could have given me an antibiotic to solve my issues, but instead they wanted me to spend the night and increase my costs. I medicated myself to make it back to the states a day later and get the medication I needed.

My husband got terrible food poisoning after eating raw seafood at our resort (Secrets Moxche) and could not tolerate anything by mouth including water, so he was getting quite dehydrated. We came here around 10pm, and all the staff here were very quick, professional, and competent. Got my husband the care he needed including labs, IV fluids and meds without a fuss. Also spoke great English which was a bonus for us. Facility is also clean. We were back at our hotel by 1am with my husband feeling much better. It did cost us a lot of money (~$1400), but they were very transparent about all the process and costs, so as a tourist without insurance, thought this was pretty reasonable. So if you are trying to save money, probably not the best place for you. But if you’re feeling ill and want to get care quickly in a clean and professional environment, I would recommend. Both my husband and I are physicians from the States.

Do not come here they asked for 5000 US dollars as a deposit (in small print non refundable), wouldn’t tell me how much it would cost for medication and also told me I’d need to get discharged by a specialist but would say when he would be in. Depending on how long he would be would determine how much more I’d be charged! All I needed was an iv with fluids and medication as I was severely dehydrated and couldn’t stand up. Zero ratings. I’ll advise you to go to the playmed hospital, they won’t rip you off and I was seen within 15 mins!

I recently needed stitches after being cut with a piece of glass on my foot. It was the middle of the night and this is where the taxi driver took us when we asked for “the best hospital” . I would AVOID this “hospital” at all costs. I speak fluent Spanish and am a nurse working within the hospital system in Canada so I have some experience in the matter. We walked in and I stated what was wrong without seeing anything they quoted a deposit for 1500 usd was needed. Once in the room, I will say many of the doctors spoke English which may be helpful for some who don’t speak Spanish, most of the staff was kind but something seemed a bit off almost like they know the hospital takes advantage of travellers / tourists. During the 6 hour ordeal, it was suggested I recieve an ultrasound, to which they needed to call a tech / doctor as they are not on at the hospital at all times. After about an hour and a half the ultrasound physician arrived , and proceeded to tell me he had never done an ultrasound like this, or seen anything like it, when I asked for benefit this had given the current incident and the fact they are not able to ultrasound over an open wound (lol) he said well I don’t have to do it. Trying to trust the process , I said it was fine . To which he then proceeded to ultrasound my foot , and after looking extremely uncomfortable and confused stated “I don’t see anything “ there was nothing to see on the resulting exam. When back in the hospital room the trauma doctor stated HE could see problems and I would need to get an epidural surgery in an operating theatre … “or stitches”. I said I would get revised back in Canada, to which he said oh it’s fine just get stitches then and you’ll probably be okay , but that back in my country I would need surgery and weeks of physiotherapy. (2 days later and I’m walking fine ) Because I refused the surgery and 300 usd cast boot , I was made to sign an AMA form 😂. I would never ever recommend anyone go to this establishment , knowing what I know now. At one point when I had a staff alone , I asked them I need help human to human what hospital would you go to , and they recommended the public hospital of PDC. Speaking of the cost of 3 poorly sewn stitches 900 USD 🤣🤣🤣 .

DO NOT GOTO THIS HOSPITAL! They are absolute con artists. They wanted 6000 dollars upfront to keep me in for IV antibiotics even though the blood test they did showed normal results. Costamed is literally across the road and their prices are much more reasonable.

Avoid this at all cost. They try everything to avoid using your travel insurance, their prices are crazy. We went for covid test we spent 5 hours my friend was feeling really bad they did not supply any saline to hydrate him or any medication. All we got was a prescription but even a simple medicine like something for the heart burn they told us they did not have one. It took them over 2 hrs for our discharge paper to be ready and covid test report even though they told us the results within 5 min of taking the sample. After the reports were ready they sent us to the front desk to close the accounts and that took and extra hour and a half.. BS!

Scam, avoid!!! I saw a doctor in Barcelo resort from the hospiten group for a sore throat and a cough. The doctor there charged me $170 for a consultation, and another $176 for 3 pills of anti-biotics, a garbage thermometer and a cough syrup … (I thought this was in pesos at first). Did not perform any tests to know if it was bacterial or viral. Did not do any Covid test but still prescribed Antibiotics and corticosteroids …. Despite the fact that I did not have any fever she tried to spook us to go to the hospital for a potential pneumonia… If we decided to go we HAD to tell her so she can send an email to them. (It sounded maybe like some sort of referral incentive for her). On top of that she did not give me enough antibiotics, so I went back the following day to get the remaining. she later told me it was fine I didn’t have to take what she prescribed. Those people should be ashamed of their practices. Basically taking advantage of people’s traveling situation.

Was on vacation at Barcelo very disappointed with them after reading all these reviews with the same story. Was transported in an ambulance shuttle from the resort because the doctor there said my 1 year old had a severe ear infection. Scared us horribly with her urgency to take her to the hospital . After spending hours at hospiten $1,000.00 later finally a pediatrician sees us and tells us our daughter does not have an ear infection but a virus. So much money so much time that was so unnecessary. This is a total scam!!

My daughter had strep throat. They asked for a 2000$ USD deposit before doing anything, unless we could confirm some details with our travel insurance company. I would gladly have paid for just the strep throat test itself upfront. After reading other reviews mentioning the deposit is non-refundable while waiting on the phone, we left without testing as we were going back home a couple days later. Indeed my daughter had strep throat. Unreasonable, and they don't care. If you end up sick in Riviera Maya, try finding another hospital.

I was shocked to hear that a doctor without a medical license was practicing here. I remain shocked that Hospiten refuses to rectify the situation. My triple shock comes from his view on mental illness, speaking about patients being "crazy". Not cool yo. Ricardo Villarreal Canseco. Get a license bro.

I had the privilege of being under Dr. Liat levy’s care. I arrived to Mexico dec.30, 2023 with my husband and on Monday morning I was rushed to the emergency due to left tubal rupture. My vacation had turned into a nightmare until I met with this doctor who was heaven sent, she performed my surgery and I will never forget the care that I received by her and her whole entire staff prior and while recovering. To the ambulance workers as well who took me to the hospital in Riviera Maya. She made me feel so calm and at ease considering I was far away from home (NYC). I would like to thank you doctor and your whole team for taking care of me you will always hold a special place in my heart and I will forever be grateful. Thank you for saving my life. God bless you always.

So went to a restaurant. Partner felt unwell as we sat down. Said if we didn't mind he was going to go back to the hotel. On standing up his legs buckled and he went down on the floor ..lucky enough a lovely Canadian nurse and an english policeman took over until a doctor arrived..nurse said its seems like dehydrated and had a low pulse.. My partner is Celiac and was glutened..he had diarrhoea for 2 days prior...this made sense ..a Doctor was called...she took vitals and confirmed dehydrated and would benefit from a drip ..an ambulance was called..partner was set up with drip then the trip to hospital began. Paramedics done tests asked questions .pressed into his stomache etc checked blood pressure throught the 40 min journey.all so far so good ..arived at hospital ..the english speaking doctor took over. Then the scam began..they asked.qustions same as in ambulance . Then the receptionists came sign this and this..money money money.. Yes youll stay overnight on a drip . Bloods were taken ..in-between this my friend called to say they had googled the hospital and the reviews on scams were horrendous... I just walked bk into the bay when a porter cam .. ok we take u for xRay...i at this point had to step in and say something..i asked an Xray on what ....he tells me on his stomache...i said there nothing wrong with his stomache..get the doctor...doctor tells me yes to see wats going on in hos stomache..i told the doctor we deal with my partner being glutened often and this is all wrong we came here to get him fluids uve took bloods told us were to stay overnight now an xray ..i said i want my partner signed out...my partner agreed ..his bag of fluids was now finished and hes was nearly back to his normal self ..anyway we get to leave but not until we pick up a bill for 4,118.34USD We were 100 USD for doctor And the ambulance said they deal with tge insurance company direct .so god know wat tge final bill will be .. We arrived bk at our hotel 1am....a good nights sleep and travelled home today to Scotland. But guess what ..we always do a Covid test after a holiday and yes my partner has Covid . In time like this should that not have been the first test they done. My partner has Gold Insurance Policy ..i bet there rubbing their hands . Money money money Thank god i had the nerve to stand up to these Robbers .. Please be very cautious

Terrible place, they don’t answer questions about the cost and then charge people $1000 USD for consultation! Right in front of me a couple from US paid $1000 for the 3 yo child consultation for ear infection and this is before testing. They tried to make us to receive services without disclosing the price, I end up insisting on actually telling me the price first, then they said that for first rabies vaccine without consultation would cost about $850 plus some materials( what materials?!) and overall it should be 4 shots in the whole treatment. I found it absolutely ridiculous and decided to go to other place. Overall staff avoiding talking and trying to hide price info. Service price list nowhere be found. So we wasted over an hour to learn the price from other clients and had to push to get idea about the prices. I don’t recommend.

I am writing this as a Mexican resident - aware tourists may have a different view. Have visited Hospiten 3 times with my toddler. They have been amazing and best bedside manner. I was asked to pay an amount up front of 5000 pesos (and was refunded this difference i didn't use). They have private rooms in emergency and a special childrens room with jungle animal decorations to help make the kids feel at home. The nurses and doctors truly made you feel like they actually care about you. They even recommended I go to another hospital to get the specialist we needed to see where they could have just let me wait until theirs arrived the next day. I went back today to collect some paperwork and they recognised me and asked me how my daughter was. Yes it was't cheapest hospital in Playa Del Carmen but I will choose it every-time moving forward after my experiences in other hospitals in PDC. It has been recently renovated and is clean and modern. I paid upfront then claimed back on insurance - however the amounts I paid were significantly less then non residents so please be aware of this.

When money is more important than human's life. Hospiten Riviera Maya Is literally the worst hospital I've ever been to in my whole entire life. Rude staff.... and they ask you for money.. for downpayment... before treatment. You can be dying, but if no payment, no treatment. Run away from there!!!!!!!!! Hope this hospital will go out of "business" soon! Hate them!

Dont go here, there is a normal hospital on the other side a little bit down the road. For 2 rabies shots whe had to pay $3000 us dollar as a down-payment.

I had a little accident on the beach and hurt my foot. Two days later the wound was infected. I went to this medical center, they cleaned and disinfected the wound. The treatment was friendly, the whole process was fast and not expensive at all.

The service is terrible, you have an emergency, and they don't answer the phone, for outpatient consultation it is the same, and it is always, it is exasperating!!!!!
