Horrendous first experience in Mexico. The owner, Shaun, became irate and called my fiance a derogatory curse word when we decided to leave. I am writing this after staying in Playa for 2 weeks at other hostels and hotels. The Boho Beach is a complete dump and you can do a lot better. Aquamarine Suites is a decent place for instance. The Boho Beach hostel was hard to find and in the busiest part of Playa. Merchants are thick and relentless in the area. The hostel is above Senor Frogs which adds to the commotion of the construction at Parques Los Fundadores. The sea view is mostly blocked by the ferry pier and the public beaches here are tiny and packed. Much better quality beaches are on the north side of town. I should have known by the poor quality photos on the listing that this place would be bad news. The check in process was my next red flag. There was no reception desk so my fiance and I had to juggle our bags, passports, phones, and the coconuts we had just bought in the street. The staff member, Martin, found a bench to relax on as he requested our credentials. I think he was high or drunk because he was so slow and seemed unsure of the process. The dining area is a joke. The 2 cup coffee carafe was caked over with residue from overuse and irregular cleaning. The cabinets are smeared with crumbs and food residues. There are few utensils and dining ware, all mismatched of dubious cleanliness. Outside the dining area is a patio with trash and construction materials that over looks more piles of trash and construction materials that surround the rear and south of the building. Our private room was underwhelming as well with noise from the park construction, street merchants, and Senor Frogs pouring in the window. Then pigeons starting landing in the window and pecking at the glass. Upon a closer look at the surfaces in the room, we found a greasy residue I suspect is from the inappropriate application of a sanitizing agent. We asked to leave and offered to pay for the first night. The owner, Shaun, became very tense and began speaking rapidly. I think he's had trouble like this before based on some of his replies to other reviews. He took my cash payment for the first night and then began rushing us out the door. We struggled to gather our things quickly the room and we began heading out. We thought we had moved on, until Shaun came storming after us down the hall demanding to know my fiance's name. I hesitantly turned and gave it to him. She had not said a single word at this point and is the sweetest and kindest person in the world. Shaun then proceeded to yell at her, claiming she was a princess and that she looked down on him. He said he was going to have her blacklisted from all of the local hotels. I looked at her, and could see her eyes welling up with tears and fear. Then Shaun called her a b-word and stormed away. No one deserves to be spoken to like that. We were stunned and shook up by Shaun's behavior and felt like our entire vacation had just gotten off to a terrible start. We since learned that there are kind people in Playa and enjoyed our trip. Just be careful to vet your lodging.

We are traveling Mexico for a couple of months, and Boho Hostel has been our favorite so far... so much in fact, that we keep saying we miss the Boho. For starters the location is amazing. The rooftop terrace overlooks the beach in both directions, making it a 2 minute walk to the ocean. We spent a few extra dollars and got a private room with a bathroom, the beds were comfortable and the AC was cold. Shawn was the owner and made us feel welcome right away. He gave us all sorts of advice about the best places to eat and shop and was happy to answer any questions we had about the area. Miguel also lived/worked there and for an extra fee made us breakfast every morning which was cheap and delicious. We also drank beers and had a potluck with them and some other guests one night on the terrace and it was very fun. They also serve coffee on the terrace every morning. Carmen's tortas is right downstairs and has an incredible breakfast/lunch menu as well. Also Shawn has 3 of the sweetest dogs at the property whom were so friendly and made it feel more like home. The place has a community kitchen and fridge for you to place some beers and cook a meal or two if you like. If you are looking for a 5 star resort, this isn't the place for you. If you are looking for a very affordable, friendly place with comfy beds and hot showers, then this is definitely your spot. I would absolutely stay here again.

I stay here kinda long term each winter. This is my 3rd winter staying here. Best location of all the hostels in Playa with it having a terrace overlooking the beautiful colors of the ocean. You can hear the waves crashing at night. Senior Frog's below the Hostel has music supplying background music most of the day into the night. Senior Frog's usually is quiet before 10pm. Hostel rooms are great for the price. Pricing conversion rates from dollars to Mexican Pesos are a little off what the going exchange rate is. Shawn and Miguel are friendly and helpful.

Boho Beach Hostel is in a great location, right off of the bustling 5th Avenue and 3 steps away from the beach. Sean and Miguel are so nice and make sure the place has good vibes at all times. The dogs are a fun addition as well.

More than the location , which is amazing! ,Very friendly staff , informative and inviting. Clean sheets and comfortable mattress, sounds simple but so important. Clean bathroom with good amount of hot water, again important. Great cross section of people from all over the world. Had some great conversations. Come for the location , stay for the good vibes. Have stayed several times , never disappointed.

How unregulated can a lodging business be? I had a dying woman coughing to death in my room. When I asked to either cancel or be placed in a safer room, the owner told me that he would ask her to “not cough” instead. What kind of answer is that? I tried to negotiate my cancellation by paying 50% of the nights I wouldn’t stay and he refused. The sheets were smelly, you cannot call those foam layers a bed, and the smell after the “cleaning” is disgusting, as if bleach had only been poured and rubbed against the floor effortlessly. I ended up paying 100% of my cancelled night and wouldn’t spend another minute in such a decadent place. Keep the money! I’m sure you need it.

Bed bugs We did get refunded & moved to a different room but traveler’s beware. Location is very good however this hostel doesn’t back directly onto the beach.

The good: great location right next to the beach and a 2 minute walk from the west end of fifth avenue; checking-in was easy; our (private double) room was clean; free drinking water; staff are nice and helpful, if a little difficult to pin down. The bad: the pictures are a bit misleading; our room had an air con unit in but it didn’t actually produce any cold air. With a bit of attention and reconfiguration the hostel could progress from being a collection of rooms with a balcony, to a more communal and atmospheric space, which would go a long way to making it feel more like a hostel. Overall Boho is relatively cheap and can therefore be placed in the good value camp. The hostel has potential but is still a work in progress at the time of writing.

Super friendly staff. They all speak English and are very helpful. I was given clear directions to where to find the colectivo for a cenote. Private room was basic but worked great. AC worked fine. Wifi was excellent.

The owner, dogs and staff are just an additional piece to this paradise. It has room for improvement but if you aren't a stuck up individual you'll love this spot for what it is.

By far the cheapest option we could find in Playa del Carmen. We got a very nice private room with A/C and a nice private bathroom with soap. Everything was clean. In the room we were in, we couldn't hear any noise from the streets or señor frogs, which is right underneath the hostel. They also offer volunteer opportunities if you're interested.

Location is great, and also easy to find as the owner sends a very clear email before hands. The venue is nice and clean, with a stunning view of the sea. The owner is kind and helpful at all times. We stayed in a comfy private room, towels were included. The only little issue is that the en-suit was quite smelly, and the smell was covered up with too much bleach which was a bit disturbing to breath. Regardless, I highly recommend this place.

A consistent breeze keeps the heat and mosquitoes away! After staying at 5 other hostels in Playa, this one finally solves the heat and insect problems due to its location right on the beach. As others have noted, it's chill and social, with good beds & baths, AC in the rooms and a very good breakfast for 60 MXN. Although the area next to the kitchen could be a great co-work space if they added a table and chairs.
