This was an unfortunate stay as we read positive reviews prior to booking. We stayed two nights, and on the first only one bathroom that serviced all dorms had toilet paper. On the second night, it was two that had toilet paper but the water had stopped on one, staff was alerted but no sign was put up to notify guests - so everyone kept using it. There was constantly an accumulation of hair in the drains. There is also no microwave and the blinds let light through. It felt the afternoon/night staff were present but not attentive. The bins were overflowing by dinner, there was a lack of toilet paper and there was fruit rotting in the fruit bowl. The hostel provided towels and a free breakfast with pancakes which was great, but nobody had much idea what was what and there should be a bit more explanation at check in on what to expect. The lady who managed breakfast in the morning was lovely and helpful - she was amazing and made sure everything was taken care of. Location is perfect, terrace is great and there was a really great guest atmosphere.

Best hostel breakfast, ever. (Russian-style blinis) pancakes, fruits, teas, meat toast, etc. Feta, cucumbers, tomatoes (Turkish-style). I was on the 3rd floor and so showers and toilets were super clean.

Staff is very unfriendly. Location is good. That's about it. To respond to you: I specifically asked the staff the day before to ensure I could leave with my bicycle in the morning but was unable to. The women in the kitchen were grumpy. You mistake someone else's words for mine. Good luck with the renovations 👍

Had a great hostel experience here: staff were friendly and helpful, location is ideal, has a great social atmosphere and the breakfast was plentiful and delicious. The place was clean and there's a nice rooftop area as well. I recommend a stay here andwould definitely stay again just as many of the guests I met were doing. Thanks for a really enjoyable stay 😊👊

A beautiful place with extremely friendly and supportive staff. It is a bit used and dirty there though, the showers did not work all the time. But still definitively recommended!

This place is overrun with BEDBUGS. The volunteers are very kind and said they had vacuumed. That will not work! The entire place needs to be treated. They did move all of us from one room that had a lot of them to another building but he had us cancel our reservation here so we couldn’t write a review online. Please check for bugs before staying somewhere! Luckily we didn’t stay overnight. Bedbugs are not just restricted to one room, especially with the socializing that happens here!!

You get what you pay. They have a gold mine and they don’t know it, the place could be really nice but there is lack of maintenance, taking a shower wasn’t a good experience. Everything is half done or just nothing. A lot of mould on the roof, some beds doesn’t have courtines, I think is more the feeling of nothing is clean that put me off! The location is GREAT!

Great hostel that fosters a nice sense of community where everyone talks to each other. Breakfast is good and its nice that everyone sits together and eats at one big table. The mattresses are pretty uncomfortable and desperate need of replacement, but still a great hostel for the price.

The owner and staff were kind and generous. The dorms need some more additional things and also toilets need to be worked upon, otherwise the overall experience was pleasant.

I had an awesome stay at Hakuna Matata guesthouse ! The staff and especially the owner were extremely friendly and helpful, they made feeling it like a second home ! Rooms are nice, common area is spacey and welcoming and the house is located perfectly in the Center of Plovdiv. I especially liked the new rooftop with bar, which is an awesome place to hang out after a long day of sightseeing and meeting other travellers. I will come back for sure

The room was a bit basic. The hostel is located on 3rd floor(4th for non-Europeans) with no lift. But the owner, he is an amazing cook. Got him some vegetables from the corner shop and he cooked an amazing lentil soup with them. Thoroughly enjoyed the food. The next morning, he prepared eggy bread for breakfast, that was great^^

I had expectations about this hostel since I read good comments on airbnb about cleanliness, the bathrooms were not hygienic even after they cleaned. Stained mirrors and dirty toilets. Good location, 5 minutes walking from city center. Good internet. And btw I did not hear anything about breakfast, nobody warned me that it was included, I did not receive it. I think all the benefits, like breakfast should be communicated during the check in. How do I know otherwise 🤔. I didn't spend so much time in the hostel, because Plovdiv is so beautiful, but the communication in messages was always kind to be defensive. Best, Valeria.

Clean, super helpful staff, and a great breakfast. The kitchen is decently stocked, the showers are hot, and for a reasonable fee you can use the clothes washer. There are plenty of places around the hostel suited for social and/or private time.

Amazing hostel! Great atmosphere! Easy to meet new people! Great rooftop terrace and bar! There is a dog present, so there are some hairs in the common areas. But I didn’t mind because you get to pet and cuddle the dog!

Extremely lovely hostel with friendly staff and amazing pancakes for breakfast. The staff is super helpful if you need help with booking taxis for hikes or tips for traveling around Bulgaria.

It was a super nice place to stay. All rooms inkluding the bathrooms are clean. ACs are installed in each room to keep the heat outside if desired. To secure important things, there are wooden lockers inside the dorm rooms. The kitchen is well equipped and offers two big refrigerators. There are two smaller balconies and one big Terrasse at the rooftop inviting to sit down in the evening to relax. Another big plus point was the service by the "hostelfather" Ivan. He really took responsibility for everyone's well being. One could see that he is experienced in managing an Hostel. In case he would leave the hostel one day one would have to hire three people to replace him. Overall a solid five star recommendation.

A hostel with great potential but is let down by attentive staff (besides the lady doing breakfast, she was attentive and kind) and the finer details of a good hostel. I noticed that there was a lack of understanding whether there’s breakfast and how it works (not told at check in or any signage), toilets consistently running out of toilet paper and a malfunctioning bathroom with no water which was raised with staff yet no sign was put up saying ‘don’t use’ resulting in people continuing to use the toilet and not be able to flush, come dinner the bins are overflowing and they aren’t emptied. I also noticed that in the room which has a balcony has a very thin blind which does nothing once the sun comes up and lights the whole room up. Regardless, it is well located and is a no frills stay which was expected due to the price. Hopefully these can be resolved for guests to have a better experience!

Hakuna matata is such an incredible place! The location is amazing, in walking distance to the old town, artist quarter and centre, the rooms are great, it has beautiful common areas and lots of terraces and balconies, wonderful art and great breakfast. But what I loved best was how Sergei and his mother run the place, they’re so kind, welcoming and attentive. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone!
