This must be kept in mind all the time - freedom and democracy must be fought for! Only politicians shouldn't come here... And if they do, they should keep their mouths shut!!! At least here and the vast majority of them...

This memorial is a very clever sculpture to commemorate the Velvet Revolution of 1989 and return Czechoslovakia to democracy. It features a sculpture of many hands, some raised in celebration and others raised in V for victory. Worth seeing if in the area just to remember that great day. There's also a small exhibit in the building, but I wouldn't bother as there's not much information in English

The memorial is devoted to 50000 students walking down from Narodni to Wenceslas square during the Velvet Revolution. They were stopped by the communist police. Students then sat down and refused to move. They were giving flowers to policemen. Suddenly police attacked demonstrators and beat them up, no one was killed. The hands symbolize strive for freedom

A reminder of the most important holiday in the Czech Republic. More important than Christmas. Truth and love will triumph over lies and hatred.

11/05/23: Nine bronze hands protruding from a wall honour the non-violent student uprising that led to the fall of the Czechoslovakia's Communist government on 17th November 1989. Fingers splayed in a 'V' for victory, represent students that faced off riot police. The plaque is no longer in it's original site due to safety fears that lit candles would cause fire the building it was attached to. However, the unofficial reason is to allow bigger crowds to come and witness the memorial.

As I pass by the Velvet Revolution Memorial on my way to work, it serves as a reminder that the freedoms and privileges we have today are not solely the result of our own efforts. We owe it to the sacrifices and struggles of those who came before us. I am grateful for the sacrifices made by others and humbled by the realization that I may not have the courage to do the same, especially for those who may not have deserved it as much as I do. Interestingly, the Velvet Revolution was one of the few peaceful revolutions in history, where the citizens protested through non-violent means such as strikes and peaceful demonstrations. This eventually led to the fall of the communist regime without a single shot being fired. The memorial, located in the heart of the city, was unveiled in 2000 to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. It features sculptures of key figures such as Vaclav Havel, who was the leader of the revolution and later became the first president of the Czech Republic, and the inscription "For your and our freedom" which serves as a reminder of the sacrifices made for the country's freedom. As I pass by this place, I am reminded of the powerful impact of peaceful protest and the importance of standing up for what is right, even in the face of oppression. I am grateful for the sacrifices made by those who came before us and am reminded to do my part in preserving and protecting the freedoms we have today.

Memorial plaque to remind of the spot where the state police has beaten up peaceful student protesters on 17th of October 1989 marking the end of socialist regime in Czechoslovakia. Usually unnoticed but gets super crowded every 17th of October when people place candles and flowers underneath.
