This is the main cemetery in Prague. I remember coming here as a kid with my class once or twice. Walking the multiple paths now and seeing various graves, some from early 1700's, seeing different names, different pictures, and dates and ages. Seeing a family plot with the last name inscribed in 1800's and now it sits in disrepair because, I assume, all the descendants have passed ànd no one is left to care for the site. Old sites overgrown with ivy slowly disappearing. Fallen crosses or tombstones. Some sites crumbling under the slow but steady encroachment of growing tree roots. Rusted cast iron gates which have fallen apart after decades of exposure. Juxtapositioned are sparkling tombstones with golden letters and a clean plot still tended to gingerly. Seeing enormous masoleums next to small graves of the haves and have nots who were not loved any less. Some tombstones defaced, stripped of the metal letters or plaques. What possesses someone to do such a thing. Seeing people's professions inscribed ...Musician, professor, politik, JUDr. . It's an existential travel in time which just proves that we are here temporarily and our presence is ultimately insignificant. We will ultimately be forgotten as time passes. So, make the best of your time here. . I was happy in this world. A serene place for contemplation, benches thoughtfully placed at corners.

Beautiful place. After nearly a week in Prague, we were running out of things to do. As the wife and I like cemeteries, we decided to pay a visit here. It was a short ride on the Metro, and practically right outside the Metro station. Its huge. We spent about 4 hours wandering around, and it was so peaceful. Its a proper oldy worldy cemetery, with loads of interesting mausoleums, and gravestones to read. Lots of places to sit and eat lunch too. We visited Kafka's grave, and also found Russian and British war graves there too. Highly recommended if you want to escape city centre Prague.

(Translated by Google) Today I was there for a long time. Nadherna prochazka. I decided long enough, because the last time I was there, a strange thing happened. Some memorials are interesting, especially when there are also carved verses that I expressed lived over the deceased beloved son .. in those verses was to feel pain and pain parents, as well as beautiful verses expressing pain over the death of a beautiful young girl, I read several times, it was in them so much love and pain and still the old way that I as a Slovak admire as my native speaker. I paused at the monument to the late little twins, and felt the silence ... it's a magical place, and I certainly recommend and watch ... you can also travel there in time. It happened to me right there and believe that the technique will not help you, since you will not catch any signal ...

A lovely, almost haunting place, fantastic for (not only) autumn and winter walks. It takes you back in time, and kind of makes you want to write a book. Really large, too, so you can spend a lot of time here if you want to.

(Translated by Google) Wandered here by chance, walking around Prague. And he was struck by the scale and antiquity of the graves. Beautiful monuments are impressive. Everything is filled with history. Amazing calm and thoughts about the transience of being visit you. Words can’t convey the feelings you feel while being here ... I wandered for an hour and a half, but time passed ... Then I found out that there were burials of many great people and Russian soldiers. Sorry ... If I come to Prague again, I will definitely come here ....

The largest cemetery in Prague. This is a huge cemetery in the Zizkov area of Prague. The older parts of the cemetery date back to the 1800’s and the crumbling Gothic monuments to the dead remind one of Pere Lachaise in Paris, or any famous Gothic graveyard. In the newer sections of the cemetery the graves are neat and well cared for. The whole graveyard has many large trees that help to make this a peaceful place. In the eastern section of the cemetery are memorials to fallen soldiers of different eras and nationalities. Near this section lies an Orthodox church in the midst of the tombs, which is frequented by Orthodox worshippers. The cemetery is not a tourist attraction per se, but it is a place for calm and thoughtful reflection. It can be good to walk through it in sunshine, rain, or snow, to see the place in all its hues. Note that the adjoining Jewish cemetery is closed on Saturdays.

(Translated by Google) One of the most beautiful, albeit wild and neglected bushes. Wonderful atmosphere. Ponuro, at the same time you will meet students or mothers studying during the pram. A quiet place, living its own neglected life in the middle of the urban jungle. I'm just sorry about the ruined statues, the abandoned, neglected tombs for sale and the whole morbid business "buy a corpse and take care of it", but I understand, it makes sense, unfortunately everything falls apart, although a better alternative would be paid entry, which would protect the cemetery from vandals, as is the case, for example, in the Jewish cemetery, and at the same time at least some repairs could be financed from the entrance fee. Incredible hyenism - headless statues, offended hands, shattered crosses, stolen porcelain photographs and copper placards and exposed graves !!! - very dangerous for both humans and local cats. In one of the graves, you can fully see the exposed coffin of an adult and the coffin of a small child! I don't understand that the cemetery administration is not doing anything about it. It's really a disgrace to the city. Náplavka dotted with an unnecessary exhibition of photos of people in quarantine - the city has money for that, but the Czech people are begging for the preservation of a historical monument in the form of adoptions. Really shameful. Even so, this environment is a perfect backdrop not only for the period to the film. The most sick here, however, is the Flora shopping gallery next door. It is not over walking through the burial ground, enjoying the architecture of the 17th century. and to hear and see the air conditioning fans. That's really perverted, it doesn't fit. Go for a softener, and then load up next to a straight line? Or do it right away at the cinema? Not a problem. Crazy architecture, no logic, no reason. The end of the place of the last rest. (Original) Jeden z nejhezčích, byť divokých a zanedbaných krchovů. Neskutečný hyenismus - sochy bez hlav, uražené ruce, roztříštěné kříže, odcizené porcelánové fotografie a měděné cedulky a obnažené hroby!!! V jednom z hrobů jde naplno vidět obnažená rakev dospělého i rakev maličkého dítěte!

The cemetery is huge, so it's definitely a great spot for a walk. It's not as majestic as some main cemeteries in other cities, but the atmosphere more than makes up for it. Especially beautiful now in autumn with the colorful leaves everywhere.

Its origins date back to 1680, when it was used during a plague epidemic, but its definitive valorization is due to Giuseppe II, who with a decree forbade, for hygienic reasons, that the dead were buried around the city churches. divides into 12 cemeteries, also distinguished by religion. In addition to the Hebrew one, which we will discuss later, there is a section for the burial of Orthodox Christians and another for Muslims. There is also the cemetery of Red Army soldiers who fell during the war in Czechoslovakia. The monumental tombs that are inside it are numerous and of great value, among which those in art nouveau style stand out. Olšany also has two large structures for the celebration of funeral rites.

(Translated by Google) Beautiful old cemetery. An oasis of tranquility and a serene atmosphere. I can imagine that people will relax here and can clear your head for a moment. The benches that are there are unfortunately very molten, and many graves are very overgrown, so what better maintenance would be recommended. This is a gem and deserves to be better maintained. Cimetière du Père Lachaise in Paris is very beautiful, but Olšany cemetery is certainly as beautiful, perhaps even more beautiful in terms of atmosphere! (Original) Prachtige oude begraafplaats. Cimetière du Père Lachaise in Parijs is erg mooi, maar Olšany cemetery is zeker zo mooi, qua sfeer misschien zelfs mooier!

This cemetery is beautiful. I visited when there were leaves on the grounds. Seeing all the growth of the plants and the varied headstones, it was a wonderful to walk through. You can see headstones meticulously taken care of, others, overgrown or broken. I never thought I would enjoy a cemetery this much. The pictures speak for themselves.

Just ten minute's tram ride from Prague's train station, the Olsany cemetery is a beautiful and serene island of fresh greenery & shadow within the city. It is not gloomy in the least. Some tombs are so old that nature has covered them entirely. It feels like walking through a forest when tombs can be seen here and there. Benches can be found scattered, inviting passers-by to enjoy its calming atmosphere. By far the most beautiful cemetery I have seen. Highly recommended.

It is a very serene and calm place, you will find beautiful (if somewhat decayed) sculptures and gravestones, memorial for victims of war and plenty of little secret corners you may accidentally stumble upon and find something truly astonishing. (Translated by Google) Rather than survivors, enthusiastic photographers will appreciate this place at any time of the year. More specifically, the oldest part of the Olšany cemeteries, which is right next to the Flora shopping center and has its unmistakable charm. There is also an educational trail, which are information boards placed along the paths between the graves, which acquaint visitors with the fate of buried and important personalities. Throughout the old cemetery you will find about 200 decorated chapel tombs along the fences, unfortunately often with walled entrances. The cemeteries also include the burial grounds of fallen Czech legionnaires and Red Army soldiers from World War I, soldiers from the Commonwealth countries, the Red Army and the Russian Liberation Army from World War II. In the Jewish cemetery you will find a synagogue and graves of famous Czech personalities, such as Franz Kafka, Jiří Orten or Ota Pavel.

(Translated by Google) Largest Prague cemetery, very well-kept, long walks possible. If you turn right immediately after the main entrance, you will come to the grave of Jan Palach after about 100 meters. In 1969, the philosophy student poured gasoline over himself in a desperate act above Prague's Wenceslas Square, in front of the National Museum. Days later he succumbed to severe burns. With his act, Palach wanted to protest against the lethargy of his compatriots after the armies of several Warsaw Pact countries invaded to suppress the Prague Spring reform attempt. The Neostalinists of the Prague leadership had his body relocated to Palach's hometown of Vsetaty in Central Bohemia because the Prague grave had become a place of pilgrimage. But many opponents of the regime went to Vsetaty on the anniversary of Palach's death to commemorate him there - despite extensive police barricades. After 1989, Palach was relocated to Prague. His terribly sad fate still moves people today. He is considered a martyr, even if many people could not and can hardly bear his self-sacrifice. It has been in Czechoslovakia after 1989, rsp. In the Czech Republic after 1993 there were always self-immolations which were never - as in Pallach's case - politically justified.

(Translated by Google) The atmosphere of the feast of the dead, when the lit wicks of candles flickered through the cemetery in the dark, was breathtaking! It is good that we do not forget our ancestors. (Original) Atmosféra svátku zesnulých, kdy ve tmě celým hřbitovem kmitaly zapálené knoty svící, byla dech beroucí! Je dobře, že nezapomínáme na své předky.

(Translated by Google) A huge cemetery that makes an amazing impression. There are graves more than 200 years old, some are in perfect condition and some are gnawed by the teeth of time. Beautiful old monuments, sculptures, crosses, chapels and shrines. Some of the alleys and graves are overgrown with vines which it gives them incredible charm and at the same time exudes terror. In the most terrible horror movies, there is no such scenery as nature has made here for over 200 years. If only someone will be in Prague for more than one day, it's three times worth it. (Original) Przeogromny cmentarz ,który robi niesamowite wrażenie.Znajdują się tu groby liczące ponad 200 lat niektóre przetrwaly w idealnym stanie, a niektóre nadgryzione zębem czasu.Przepiekne stare pomniki, rzeźby, krzyże,kaplice i kapliczki.

(Translated by Google) Very nice cemetery after years I visited it again and did not disappoint! Suitable for a walk full of historic tombs and graves and there are buried many important personalities, actors, etc. The weather was gloomy which further enhanced the atmosphere, I can simply recommend the visit.
