A very pretty state park! We hiked the north peak trail - definitely recommend bringing poles. It is doable without, but it is steep. Very nice views and it is always fun to look across the way and see bits of Canada! The lake is also very pretty.

What a park! I never imagined. If you're hiking the Mt. Katahdin trail, be at the ranger station before 6 am, most days. Have plenty of water and flashlights (and that's when the weather is great...). Hiking the loop is not for those out of shape or faint of heart. Some of the hikes make Mt Washington seem like a walk in the park.

What an incredible experience! The hiking has some challenges but worth every step. The staff are both helpful and polite. The camp sites are clean. I would absolutely come back again!

We love this park. Everyone we spoke to was extremely friendly and professional. The bathrooms and showers were very clean and were tended every day. We loved that this campground had individual showers and bathrooms, so you have complete privacy. The hiking trails were well marked and easy to follow, but be warned the hike up the south peak is STEEP! You should definitely follow the park recommendations to climb it first, then move clockwise around to the north peak. We are experienced hikers and found this climb a little daunting, but we made it and completed the entire hike! The beach area is nice and is within walking distance of the campground, however it is uphill back to the campground. The campground sites are nicely spaced with most being in wooded areas. Overall we would definitely camp here again. BTW, be sure to check out the solar system models on Highway 1 from Houlton to Presque Isle. They are pretty cool.

We had one day to explore Baxter and enjoy the beautiful weather. We took a canoe from Kidney Pond, paddled across to a landing where we hiked a short trail to Lily Pad Pond. There we took one of the locked canoes (we had gotten the key from the ranger at Kidney Pond) and paddled around Lily Pad Pond, enjoying the amazing mountain views! We found another place to leave the canoe while we hiked to Little and Big Niagra Falls and a beautiful trail to Windy Pitch Pond. We returned the same way, taking our time enjoying the views and loons, trying to capture it on our phone camera. Such a beautiful, relaxing way to spend the day! Looking forward to going back and staying longer.

Great level campsite (#3) and fun trails for hiking and xc skiing. If doing the twin peaks go clockwise and have serious boots - it is very steep. No sandals or flip-flops

This is a most wonderful place to be. It is like heaven to me, and a place where people can be close to God! I climbed this mountain in 1996 and have yet to be able to get to the top again. I am hopeful that I will be acending the mountain soon...within the next month or so. In the meantime here is a bit of a tease from my recent Father's day trip to the outskirts of Baxter State Park. One of the most amazing areas in Maine USA! GREAT THANKS to the Creator and former Governor Percival Baxter, rest his soul, for buying and giving this wonderful area to the people of Maine!!

The views with fall colors turning are truly amazing! I’m here in early October and the trees are beautiful. The trails to the north and south peaks are no joke. When they say steep, they mean it. It doesn’t look like there’s a safe way down the south trail, so you should really plan to take the notch trail back down. I went up to the north peak, across to the south and then down the notch. Worth every step!

Loved the hike at this park. Cost was very reasonable, $4.00 per adult for a non resident. We took the rangers recommendation and went up the notch trail to get to the south peak since the trail to the south peak is very steep. Once visiting the south peak we headed to the north peak. It is definitely steep coming down the north peak trail but definitely doable. All in all we liked the view from the south peak the best. Overall a really great hike and beautiful location!

Lots of trails. Swimming, fishing 🎣 and ⛵ boat launch area. Toilets available and cleaned twice per day. Not all of the easier trails are in good shape. They are overgrown and uneven due to water 💦 run off. I can't imagine cross country skiing on these trails, especially with all the roots sticking up. A lot of snow 🌨️ is going to need to fall in order to ski ⛷️. Trail up the mountain actually has stairs until you reach a serious incline. My friend, Authur Itisis, who was grumbling on my hike, would yell at me attempting the climb. I actually passed a playground on my hike. The only nature I encountered was a red squirrel 🐿️, that was building a nest. It came close to me. I don't know if it was saying or waiting for me to"Shove off". You don't need bug repellent, though two colorful dragonflies landed on me. Not many 🐦 s. Friendly staff. Minimal cost to enter but bring cash. Plenty of parking. Trails are marked. Trails range from moderate to difficult.

The goal of Baxter is resource preservation which is not easy to understand unless you really study that. What is the quality of the resource because of the staff and those that contribute money? Excellent, thank you. Great Job! We had the time of our lives summer 2019

I spent just one day here. Actually, I have wanted to be at this state Park more days. But weather conditions: three days of strong wind and temperature on the peak just 36...40 F. I can't afford it. August is not the late October. Okay. So many beautiful ponds, nice pavement roads, too many campgrounds, where you stop in the cabin. Nice and careful park rangers. I was glad to climb on Baxter Peak. It was my first visit in Maine (bucket list was fulfilled with Acadia National Park, Portland area: City, Cape Everything). Next time I will bring more warm stuff and will climb South and Pamola Peaks. Certainly, I promise myself to take a sleep in the cabin next trip. Thank you, Rangers for Vacation like this.

Had a great time! The trails are definitely challenging, the south peak is not for the faint of hearth or legs. We had a blast fishing, swimming and exploring. We saw a baby maine black bear, deer, geese, ducks and other wildlife. Near to Presque Isle full off good food and activities.

A beautiful and awe-inspiring place. Katahdin is one of the best climbs in the Northeast, and the respect it commands draws a fascinating and diverse group of people to the park. On top of the spectacular views and hikes throughout, Baxter earns extra points for its staff, who are some of the friendliest and most dedicated employees I’ve encountered in any park in the US. Everyone should go here at least once. Thank you Baxter State Park for an excellent experience! P.S. - if you’ve never walked into an outhouse and thought “it smells great in here,” you’ve never been to Baxter. I don’t know how they do it, but it is astounding.

Very limited parking inside park. We showed up 2hrs before opening to get in line & was the 4th car. Waste of time as tickets were alrdy sold out. If you don’t get a parking ticket reserved just turn around & go back home, for us, home was a 5 hour flight back. We were told only 10 car passes/day for the entire east side of park. Won’t return ever again

Pleasant and quite. Beautiful views. Great staff, a staff definitely a cut above. One ranger total jerk at South Branch, think Jeff was name. He was an abnormality; this is a pristine paradise.

Very nice state park. Need to go back and explore some more because it is so big. I have hiked to the peak of Katahdin (Highest peak in Maine) and arguably the hardest summit of the Appilation Trail. Up Hunt trail and decent down Abol trail. This is a very strenuous hike, bring food, plenty of water and change of clothes as well as rain gear because it usually rains once a day. I have also hiked up to Horse Mt. Overlook and you get some great views up there. I would say the view from Katahdin was better, but once I hit 4000+ ft in elevation, visibility was maybe at 10-20 yards. Horse Mt overlook is also covered in blueberry bushes which is a nice surprise snack. Pretty easy hike if you're in decent shape. The trail is not too long at approximately 1.3 miles I believe. Awesome Southwest view from the north east corner of the park. I stayed one night at Daicey pond campground before hiking Katahdin to get an early start. I rented a cabin that was pretty nice. 2 double beds, and a wood stove for heat and oil lamps since there is no electricity running through the park. A porch with the pond only 20-30 yards away with a fire pit in between great for cooking. Cool veiws of Katahdin, and a pond you can swim and canoe in. They have canoes available at the campground.

Bring your supplies, and be ready for some VERY challenging trails. Some just straight up boulders. So cool, but be careful, and have a buddy, or better yet a group

Amazing staff, we needed a bigger site to accommodate us and the staff was so helpful and making sure we were comfortable. Put my kayak in the water for the first time there and the dock wasn't all slippery all around had a great experience there.

Aroostook State Park is a delightful park that has lots of hiking trails. It has a lake a lake with plenty of boating and canoeing and swimming. There are a playground for children there are volleyball amenities. They have very nice outhouse style bathrooms and very nice showers. They also have toilets and hot water showers with hot water and flushed flush toilets they also have a cooking barn that has hot and cold war water, Bering, Milton, Washington for preparing meals and washing dishes

Super in love with Baxter State Park! They have done a good job in preserving this beautiful nature. Fall is a good time to visit with the beautiful colors of leaves exploding. As a bonus, i saw not a baby shark not a mama shark, but a baby moose and a mama moose!

It is absolutely beautiful! The natural rock slides were amazingly deep pools below. The rock cliffs to jp into the water from were so much fun! No bathrooms bc of Covid 19 is absolutely irresponsible of the park rangers and staff. At the rangers station she was very rude. Told us everything was full. We drove in anyway because this was the 3rd time this summer my son was told it was full and it never was more than 2 people at either place we were going to. Other than that it was an awesome experience with my kids!

For my 100th review, i decided to review the Baxter State Park because this is one of my absolute favorite places. I have been to thr park atleast 15 times and i still have more to discover. The trails are some of the best ones. Camp grounds are superb. One of the hidden gems of Maine

  • 5/5 Jereme S. 3 years ago on Google
Amazing views. If you're here in search for wildlife, the rangers advised that due to increased traffic, you're likely going to have a better chance to see more on the side roads and pullouts outside of the gates near the park.

Great park! All dirt roads so take it slow. I damaged a tire going over a sharp rock too fast. Otherwise I had a lovely hike up the Hunt trail to Katahdin even with the rain, went paddle boarding on a couple of ponds, and definitely want to go back.
