I enjoyed my time at one of Africa's oldest nature reserve ,dating back to the very late 1800s. I come for one thing which is the lovely and moderately difficult yellow trail . It's 10.5km long and has 260 to 370m elevation depending on direction of the loop you take . If you take it backwards from 10 to 1km it's far more difficult and hence an even greater challenge. If the conditions are right you will be treated with some wild life signing further adding to the breathe taking views and just the feeling of being in a little green heaven in the middle of our capital city.

It's kind of uphill and downhill (Yellow Trail 10,5k). Watch your steps; it was a steep climb, mainly at the beginning of it. The views were good—not so many flowers, though. This time, I was not so lucky to spot the wild animals. It was very dark and about to rain. It was a cold morning, and it helped a lot to do the hike. The terrain isn't for the beginner hiker, and please, if you feel unfit, do not attempt to try it on. There are another two trails you might try: the 4K hike (White Trail) and the 3,5K hike (Red Trail). The tariff was R51 for adults. The trail was well marked. One of the best hiking places in Pretoria, I would say. Obviously, I will do it again 🥾🥾

I was pleasantly surprised visiting the Voortrekker Monument after being there as a kid. It is well maintained, clean, and has a lot of historical information across a few other places surrounding the main monument. It's worth the visit.

Amazing hiking trails, saw Zebras and antelopes. You should try the yellow route, you won't be disappointed, this is like the longest trail at Groenkloof, try having normal hiking boots as the trail gets a little bit steep and rocky as you get to the end.

Went for a refreshing 10km morning hike on a cold winter morning and absolutely loved it. We slacked about it and it took us 5 hours. Met a couple of people on the trail, but only got crowded on the shorter route. There's a children's play park and horse stables near the parking spots, which is convenient for me who has a small child who may not want to go on a long hike. There are three trails, white, red, and yellow. The 10km yellow joins either the red or white after 7km. We took the red trail, which has all the way to the R21 by Monument park but lost the route around the Hippo pool and ended up on the cycle route, which is where we saw the two ostrich. Clearly marked. Moderate difficulty.

This hike is NOT for the unfit! Amazing 11km (it’s not 10.5km) but it is really really REALLY tough. Try to start as early as possible, the heat is a killer. There’s a steep climb at the beginning and plenty ups and downs at the last 2km’s. I will attempt this hike again but only when I’m a lot fitter.

Pros: - sufficient parking - entrance fee not too high - the trail is quite clean and nicely marked - some animals can be seen like zebras ostrich and giraffes. - even when very crowed as now after the lockdown it still doesnt feel too busy Cons: - entrance is poorly organised. Just one cashier for walk in and cars. You wai up to 45 minutes to enter - nearly no shadow along the entire 10.5km trail - biggest issue: as the park is next to busy roads around 70% of the 10.5km trail the main thing you hear are cars

More clearer and directive signs would do. The map we received was faded, didn't help at all. Otherwise, its a great hiking place. Think twice before doing 10.5km. The first 2km and last 2km will make u wanna call SOS

A truly beautiful nature reserve and a great experience completing the 10km hike. Greatful that we started early, as the first 5km provided some shade and the last 5km was very hot. The trail was very rocky and I found it challenging as there were plenty of inclines and declines. I would highly recommend good hiking shoes for this 10km as a priority, start as early as possible, take enough water and a hiking stick if required (we had sticks and it was very helpful to balance against the rocks). We crossed paths with an ostrich and some zebras making it a unique hiking experience, we also saw some game in the distance.

I had a lot of fun at Groenkloof. Well I didn’t know that they accept CARD Payments only. there are couple of activities you can do there. I saw some people doing yoga, some riding horses. It’s a nice place for chilling with your family, spouse or friends.ALCOHOL IS ALLOWED & They got some braai stands free to use, it’s so clean. The workers are so friendly. They have free playgrounds for kids. Also there’s a shop they’re selling ice creams, quick food, beverages etc Well I was there for hiking. Yeah I took the 4km one 😊 baby steps . People the view 😍 was worth it. I saw some ostriches drinking water. It was very fun folks . Go and connect with nature folks. It really helps in clearing your mind, taking a break from the noise ko Kasi, in Town . The are NO Ventures @Groenkloof , you won’t be asked if you are going somewhere?“Wanamela bro waka ”

Situated in Pretoria, you wouldn't imagine you are so close to the city! Beautiful quiet hiking, open plains. There is NO shade whatsoever, so take plenty water. The only real upsetting thing is that the trails are not well marked whatsoever, and this can make a short- planned walk into a long few hours hike. I advise anyone doing this hike to take that into consideration.

Had an awesome hiking experience with my friends. We did a 10km hike from 8am-1pm, we were resting along the way to see wildlife and have snack. I like that theres a braai area and picnic spot. I'll definitely go to Groenkloof again and for horse riding this time

Great location as it's just adjacent to Fountains Valley so you can do both places if you have enough time. The reserve is quite large and the hiking trails offer enough optical coverage in terms of exploring. Sadly the taps along the trails are "put of service" however there are enough spots for picnicking and braaing. Just no music allowed. Overall it's a great place to spend a day at with either family or a group of friends :)

Great trails. Friendly staff and passing faces. A bit of litter on the trail, however all the bins along the way were freshly lined. Great prevelance and variety of birds and mammals. Went a bit late in the day, so the yellow trail (10.5km) was much quieter; however as with all daytime activities in the warmer months, it is recommended to get out in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun is not as harsh. Horse riding and 4X4 trails available. Horses were stabled well with clean water provided. Suitable for all walks of life; families, adrenaline junkies, nature lovers, tourists, patriots and more.

Did the 10.5km hike on a Saturday. Very very busy trail. Best if if start early as the open. Was very annoyed by people who brought loud bluetooth speakers. No regard for other hikers or wildlife at all. Wildlife alobg the trail if lucky. Level: easy

What a beautiful and peaceful place! A great place for children and adults alike. However, I was very worried about the state of the jungle gyms - one of the kids fell off an unstable slide and broke his wrist. There are screws protruding from the wood. The other slide is cracked. Some of the wooden bars are loose. The orange drum has rusted, sharp edges. ☹ Photos attached.

This is the oldest proclaimed nature reserve in Africa. Nice and easy 4X4 drive. Nice views of Pretoria and surrounding. Lots of zebras and other animals. Quite a few points of interest. Best to go early in the morning as it gets hot. Take lots of water. Drive is about 14km and takes over 2 hours.

Very pleasant - can enjoy some open spaces, sunshine and fresh air. There's a choice of different length hikes ( we did a route of 4.7km ). Like always with the outdoors, have the sunscreen and liquids on hand.

Lovely nature reserve with a lot of trees and herbs, variety of bird species and a lots of wildlife. Great and safe place for day walks, bike rides and jog on the trails. Beautiful scenery and decently laid out trails. We did the white and red trails, saw giraffes, zebras, ostriches and blue wildebeests. Seeing the giraffes and zebras was one of the best experiences for me personally. Definitely worth a visit.

I throughly enjoyed myself here. Mostly because we got to see Zebras at a very close range and walked between them. That was an exciting experience. The trail itself tends to be too rocky and a lot of climbing on the last 3 kilometres. The trail direction signs need to be repainted as some are almost completely washed off. There are some beautiful, peaceful open views where the fresh clean air brushes you as you walk and stop a bit to take it all in. We also saw wildebeest and an Ostrich family complete with parents and babies. It was actually the first time I saw baby Ostriches ever! We walked behind them for about 500 metres because they insisted on using the pathway and we did not want to get too close to be a possible threat to a mother of small chicks. We all know that is when animals are most dangerous or defensive. We definitely can't outrun an ostrich and Ostriches are known to kick. So that was scary but also exciting adding to the colourful experience we had. Also note that the map shoes resting places and we expected to find a table and benches under trees but there is no sign of any area being designated for resting. Therefore we believe that the map is just suggesting those places to you. You will decide whether you stand and drink water, take pictures or sit on the ground. We personally did not make any resting stops. We will definitely be coming back to Groenkloof Nature Reserve.

BE CAREFUL!! We went hiking and our group was chased down by two guys with very big knives (they stole all our belongings) very scary situation and would not wish that on my worst enemy!! I realise that the reserve is not to blame as they did try to assist after we made it back to reception (just leaving this as a WARNING please be vigilant).

I did the yellow trail 10.5km, very easy for someone who is a regular hiker. It’s in the middle of the city,so it’s not absolutely tranquil. There is animals on the trail I managed to zebras 🦓 Scenery not that good, it doesn’t give that “I am lost in nature kind of feeling. You will hear cars driving by. I would recommend the braai areas for family picnics, great play area for kids

Lovely serene safe place to hike or cycle among some wild animals. Hiking trails are good from beginner to advanced (though tame) hikers. Great place for family and group hikes or cycling, allowing you to finish off the day with some clean picnic areas for braaing and relaxing.

Not so Groen of course in the winter but there are those few trees that withstand the winter. Trails, very easy although the markings could be better. If you are looking for a proper challenge, do the 10km. Very rocky so decent shoes required. The views are also meh. At most we saw 2 zebras.

Imagine a zoo but with the animals roaming around freely. It was a beautiful experience. Great hiking experience as well. I took the yellow trail which is a 10.5km hiking route. The hike was fairly moderate & the route is well marked & very easy to navigate your way through without a map. When I saw the wildlife from afar I thought they were just statues but when I got closer I was amazed to see how very real they were. There's also a poster in the parking area with emergency numbers that you can call in case someone is lost. There's plenty of parking space & picnic areas.

A very good hiking trail. There are clean ablution facilities, a little cafe for a cup of coffee, picnic spots with nice trees and shade, horses for rides and a few ostriches roaming the area... All that before you start the hiking trails which has an entrance fee of R50! There are a few trails so refer to the map given at the gate. The paths are not so clearly marked so pay attention because the trails differ in length. There are also free roaming Zebra and ostriches on the walkways. There are sections where it's very uphill and can get quite strenuous which is nice depending on your fitness level- wear extra sun protection as there is not much shade along trails.

Had a fantastic day out at Groenkloof. Very friendly staff getting a multitude of visitors in under current difficult conditions. Almost all visitors were there to enjoy a hike. The venue is clean and properly maintained . The trails were clearly marked and very clean. No papers or any litter spotted along two trails that is used by an increasing number of people during lockdown. A place that can be safely used by people looking to escape to the outdoors.

Great Hiking Trails - On my way to the Reserve with my partner, we used Google Maps - which itself, gave us wrong directions and resorted to using Waze which gave us spot on directions. When we arrived, the entry fee was R49 (Adults) and not R45 as the website mentions, but nevertheless; you receive a Hiking trail map, which gets very helpful along the way! We did the 5km Red Trail (Medium intensity) and it was worth every minute of the Hike. Very very clean, well looked after and safe. Trails were clearly marked throughout with resting spots in between where we, luckily, got to see plenty of wildlife up-close. If you do decide to go on a hot day; sunscreen will do since there’s not much shade. You’ll hear cars passing over the highway at certain spots, so that’s the slight downfall, but besides that you won’t be disappointed. *Be cautious of speeding traffic when leaving the Reserve, especially if you’re going towards Brooklyn/PTA CBD, as you can’t see upcoming cars from the bottom hill and there aren’t any traffic signs regulating traffic.

Moderate hiking routes, have different options to choose from. There was staff visibility, who were very helpful, and clear markings. The views and surroundings are really beautiful, and there are animals too! We came across zebras and buffalos (bison), there were also so many interesting and colourful bugs. There is one place where a body of water stands between you and completing your route (after heavy rains); if you do not want to cross, then follow the animal trails (if visible) and go around. A mini detour, but doable. I really enjoyed this one, will do it many more times again. Also easy on the pocket, especially for what you get!

There are nice picnic and braai areas. They charge a reasonable entrance fee. They have various hiking trails, which are lovely. However, we took the 10,5 km hiking trail which is quite strenuous and there is no water taps or resting areas on the trail, so make sure to take lots of water. Also make sure to put on sun screen as there is very little shade. Overall it is a good place for an outing and we'd definitely be visiting again.

Good place to drive around being so closed to Pretoria..Roads direction signals can be improved considering they take a good charge for the entrance

We went on the hike on Saturday the 16.01.2021.We were about 2km into the hike when two guys with panga's come running up to us.My brother and I turned around and started running into the opposite direction. Our friend stood still and one of the guys threatened him with the panga and took his belongings. Unfortunately I fell down while trying to run away from the other guy.He was so quickly on top of me threatening to stab me if I don't give him my bag. After the ordeal we went to the security for assistance and they were not helpful. I will not recommend this place.

Not a great place at all, me and my two friends where out for a nice trip when two guys with pangas ( long f-en knives) approached us and asked for our bags and cellphones. We gave it to them because we valued our lives, when we came back to base camp the staff where very unhelpful and the manager even made the remark that this does happen often. Please stay away from this park, it is close to the highway, close to Sunnyside the most dangerous place in PTA.

Lovely place, but numerous species of weeds and invader plants right throughout the reserve. Roads are not in a good condition considering the fee you need to pay to drive through it with your vehicle, whether it is a 4x4 or not. The reserve is generally not kept and needs lots of work.

The reserve is a beautiful place to visit. Animals are a bit rare to find at times. The roads however were in bad condition and not suitable for small cars. This makes it difficult to go back for another visit. If you have a vehicle with good ground clearance, the drive is good.

Awesome place. Did the 4x4 trail as a novice with a stock standard Jeep Grand Cherokee. Enjoyed the whole park. People there are friendly. Saw some wildlife as well.

The environment is very refreshing and therapeutic. The 10km hiking experience was very intense yet fun.😄The walking route was a bit confusing, we got lost a few times but ended up finding our way back. Overall the place is very amazing it just needs to maintain and improve the picnic area.

Great place to visit in Pretoria due to its family friendliness at a low price. The nature reserve offers a number of activities such as Horse riding, hiking, a 4×4, trail as well as braai and picnic facilities. All this while in the background wild animals such as Zebra and Giraffe roam around. Definitely a must visit for the whole family.

Although I wasn't in the actual nature reserve, but just on the other side of the fence. It seems quiet and clean, so to take a break from the city without the travel, I believe this reserve will be able to help with finding your centre and quiet your mind. Also nice to go for a short hike or bike ride with friends or family.

This place is amazing and wel kept! Apart from a few missing signs causing us to veer off course, we had an amazing time. We saw kudu, rooihartebees, zebra, giraffe, impala, and ostriches to name a few. Great for family outings as well as adventurous hikers. A must while you are in Pretoria

Now that was a hike!! Groenkloof is a dynamite place to walk & talk (and sometimes to gasp and wheeze), with your friends, surrounded by nature and the big wide open! Zebra! Giraffe! Those buffalo thing I keep forgetting what they're called...all there and ready for you to attempt to photograph! Theres the small but fun white trail (3km maybe?), the red trail that lures you into a false sense of security and then BAM - uphill bonanza! And finally the 10km yellow trail for when you're out to prove your metal!! Rawr!!! The decision is in your hands, chose wisely grasshopper! One thing though, if you're going in Summer, slather that sunscreen on like a sumo wrestle does oil cos it is HOT out there! Onwards to the next hike!

One of the best hiking trails I've been to. The reserve is very family friendly. Highly recommend by me.

  • 5/5 Paul K. 2 years ago on Google
It's a stunning place with incredible natural views, a true destination for nature and outdoor lovers. They have horse riding at the site, which have to be pre booked online, and braai areas situated in the bush. They have animals, though i was unfortunate not to see any, and there are hiking trails and biking trails for those who are in that sort of things. On the other part of the reserve, there is a public area for braaing and swimming. The pool is a bit too crowded with intoxicated people, but fortunately they have life guards monitoring the pool. The overall experience was really nice and refreshing. Would definitely go back again

Beautiful place to go for a walk, preferably in the early morning as it does get very hot there. Loads of animals, such as zebras, giraffes, ostriches, antelopes and as well many other different bird species.

Great selection of animals. I saw zebras, giraffes, buffalo, bucks and many more. You can hike along multiple paths or you can take a horseride along the paths. No cash is accepted at the entrance. Card only

I went there with my 6 year old son and he loved it, we did both the red and the white route with each being about 3.5 km so we did about 7km. It was so much fun especially the red route, it has beautiful views. We will definitely visit again.

We did 10km trail. The difficulty of the trail is 8/10 difficult in a way. The first few km’s are super easy and the last kms felt like mini death 💀 One needs to be super fit for the trail since it’s kinda like difficult especially towards the end. Some paths are rocky and some smooth. I enjoyed seeing the zebra’s 😀Overall experience, it was great. Will I do it again, YES 🙌🏿
