Awesome top view of the city .. The ruins of the main church of St. Nikolai at the Hamburg Hopfenmarkt are dedicated as a memorial to St. Nikolai “to the victims of war and tyranny between 1933 and 1945”. The church was founded in 1195 and its last neo-Gothic version was completed in 1874. Its 147.3 meter high tower was the tallest structure in the world from 1874 to 1877

Nice small and fast visit. You may like the 75m top view (very small place up there behind bars and don’t expect a full outside walk around) = full price 5€ / under 17 kids 3€ Nice underground museum. Recommandation : overall yes for the view and the historical part (sightseeing from what still stand for the 5th highest religious building)

The museum tells the story of three horrific events of the Second World War; the bombing raid on Coventry by the Luftwaffe, the allied raids on Hamburg and the destruction of Warsaw at the start of the war. Some of the photos and commentary are quite graphic, but incredibly moving. Currently, there are some large photographs of the war in Ukraine in the carcass of the cathedral. The ride in the elevator to the top of the tower was fun, but the view was marred by the many iron railings and bars and was not worth the admission price (much better views can be had from the Elbphilarmonie building, which has free entry).

Looking at the ruins is free and in itself interesting. For 5 EUR you also get to go up the tower with a beautiful view over Hamburg. The same ticket also gives you access to the museum under the church ruins which can definitely be recommended as well. Everything down there is written in both German and English. The museum tells the story of the church as well as the bombing of Hamburg and Warsaw. Parts of the exhibition was rather brutal as it may be expected, this is worth remembering if you are sensitive to descriptions of violence and death.

If you are in Hamburg, you must visit St. Nikolai Memorial. The museum is well worth a busy, full of information from when the church was built until it collapsed during WWII. Get to the top of the church and see beautiful Hamburg. The chap selling the ticket by the lift, was very polite and very knowledgeable. This place is a must visit.

Iconic church is a must see when traveling Hamburg, Germany. This church took our breath away with the details and also the history and fateful story. Was 6 euro for the elevator ride to the top and entrance to the museum in the basement.

View from the top was average but for only 6€ per person, it was worth it and included entry to the museum. The museum is situated in the crypt of the old cathedral and contains the history of the building and WW2. Information boards are in German and English. There are storage lockers before the start of the museum which cost 1€ but do deposit the euro back once you unlock the locker. There are toilets also which you can only access once you have bought a ticket. Overall, the memorial was very emotional for me but also incredibly interesting and important

Impressive remembrance site of the bombing of Hamburg at the end of the WWII. Unfortunately only little information outside of the museum in the still standing part of St. Nikolai church. Impressive to visit, important to remember and take care that it'll never again happens ! Definitely worth visiting !

I visited the St. Nikolai Main Church last week on my visit to Hamburg and it was quite a humbling and magnificent experience. History is definitely priceless when it’s preserved for future generations. I highly recommend anyone visiting Hamburg and is interested in monumental views to explore this location!👍🏾

It was worth the visit: for 6€ (adult price) you get access to the top floor of the tower and the annexed museum. Discount available for students. The view from the top is stunning! The sight overall is well maintained, it's good to have descriptive signs around that explain the history behind the monument.

Impressive building, worth a visit. But the tower is not that great, very limited views as they are through metal bars and you cannot see much at all. I did both, but I would recommend only doing the other tower 15 minutes walk from this one. Much better views and entirely outside.

Visiting from America - Haunting, beautiful, informative. The separate underground museum offers English translations on all placards. You cannot beat the views from the top of the spire. I highly recommend visiting this site.

An important memorial to capture how bad the fire bombings of WWII were. Only the original tower and some inner walls of the church remain, and you can see shelling marks on the tower itself.

Church tower of great historical importance with interesting architecture and historical facts you can read about on-site and on-line. Stunning gargoyles. The view from the top is not as nice as form St Michael's tower, though... Nevertheless, definitely worth the visit!

If I have to summarize the experience then it has to a mix of both Heartbreaking and breathtaking. The story and history is so heartbreaking with the images of destruction and the before and after images in the museum. But to build something so tall and beautiful so many years back is exceptional. Once there you feel a bit guilty once you start enjoying the beauty and the view from top as you are constantly reminded of the painful stories associated with the place as well. But a must visit when in Hamburg

The church, which was bombed in World War II, was turned into a monument. You can go up to a height of 77 meters by elevator by paying 6 euros. It is definitely worth seeing Hamburg at that altitude.

Very informative often gruesome account of the bombing of Hamburg. Take the lift to the top of the spire and then visit the museum underground in the crypt. There maybe a wait for the lift.

The fascinating neo-Gothic architecture of the Church complex and the historical significance of the place itself. The second tallest building in Hamburg, the observation deck offers excellent views of the entire city.

The usage of the elevator and the entrance fee of the museum were €6/per person in total. There was no waiting line and it wasn't crowded even though we went on Saturday afternoon. I saw multiple people just went away after coming down from the church and didn't notice the museum! It is worse to see inside. Don't miss it!

This Gothic church offers a 75-meter lift, providing a breathtaking view of the city. The ticket price for students was only 10 euros. It’s over 900 years old, yet it’s a wonderfully constructed building. Definitely recommended.

Beautiful remains of the old church. Nice view from the tower. I really recommend taking a ticket for the lift & museum.

The view from the tower is really nice, you see a lot of Hamburg from up there and the museum underneath is also pretty cool, and for 5€ really cheap

  • 5/5 M R. 10 months ago on Google
Somber yet beautiful structure, now a war memorial, with an interesting history. €6 charge per person to take the elevator to the observation level. Limited parking near.

If someone asks me which historical place should visit in Hamburg, 100% I say that place is St.Nicolai Church. It is a very meaningful and powerful place. It holds so many emotions all at once that words are truly inadequate.

Visited the St. Nikolai Memorial in Hamburg and it was a truly moving experience. The historic church ruins offer a somber reminder of the city's past, and the panoramic views from the observation deck are simply breathtaking. Definitely worth a visit to pay respects and take in the stunning cityscape.

Germany has several such Church War Memorials which were deliberately left in the condition from the end of WWII to remind future generations on war devastations never to happen again. St. Nikolai is the oldest Hamburg Church dating back to late 12 cent when the first Chapel was built here. Over the centuries the Church started being enlarged and adding the Tower. In 16 c the first tall tower was built, a hexagonal one just like in many Hanseatic cities. That Church and Tower lasted until the mid 19 c Great Fire. Shortly after the fire devastation the Church was repositioned and built in Gothic style with the tallest Church tower in the world. St. Nikolai Tower is still today the tallest structure in Hamburg. That same tower was used as an orientation point for allied bombing in 1943-45 air raids. The Church (along with majority of the city) was destroyed, but the Tower only caught fire and survived. All that you can learn in terrific museum beneath the Church along with original pictures. Climbing that historic Tower is also included for the same price (6 Euros if I remember correctly). Excellent 360' views from up there. Highly recommend and one of Hamburg best attractions

A sad reminder of what happens when unintelligent people make the decisions. A destroyed building turned into an elevated view tower for only 6 euro. You can also visit the underground museum with the same ticket. I liked both and find it fascinating they made the elevator. 72 meters is impressive enough. The yard, where the church used to be, also has a few memorials and reminders.

  • 5/5 Mike W. 11 months ago on Google
We took the elevator to the top, great views, was only 4€, well worth it. no time limit while up there, so you can stay as long as you like. This also included entry into the museum, this was very well done, regarding the destruction of the city during WWII. It was honestly very sad to go through and especially watch the short film on what had happened.

A very interesting part of the history of Hamburg. It is incredible to see this historic building and consider what it was like before, during and after the bombings. Visiting the building remains is free. The price of the ticket for the lift to go up the tower is worth it for the views of Hamburg, and there is a museum as well included in the price of the ticket. There is a lot to see when visiting Hamburg, and I think it is worth visiting here. I understand that there is a clarion of bells if visiting on Thursday's at noon, so it might also be worth checking that out.

Great place to know history. The history and stories are well documented both in english and german. One of the main attraction will be the platform. A lift which take to top of the church. You can see a great picturesque from there.

Beautiful 360 view from Hamburg. Elevator to the top of the church in 700m height. That was nice.

Visited for the top panaromic view of hamburg. But presence of metallic grills disappointed (so you can't take panaromic view easily). However, museum downstairs is good.

Very interesting historical place to visit. High tower is almost 800 m high, which might be a bit scary. Its museum has a small documentary about Hamburg's firestorm during WW2. Though it felt a bit nationalist documentary, the outcome of war is undeniable for sure.

A giant of a building, very beautiful and the architechture! I'm not a religious man, but you can't help be amazed by this building. And just when you think you've seen it all, you go out to a gården in the back and from there you'll be amazed again - would love to explore the many halls and rooms this cathedral must hold.

This is the remnant of the of the old St. Nikolai church, that is now dedicated as a memorial for the second world war. It is free to walk around the ruins. There is an entrance fee to go up the tower or to go down into the museum that is under the memorial. The view from the tower is very nice, however the tower has been closed during most of the covid period.

Probably for being one of the top monuments or must in Hamburg they could have done more. There is one Wall standing up. The best was the life music running every midday.

  • 5/5 Writing R. 2 years ago on Google
Entry from 3 euros for young people to 5 euros for adults, subject to covid-19 protocols. I would definitely recommend to visit for nice pictures and most importantly, if the history is of interest or you want to learn more join the official tour.

Even though most of the church sadly is gone due to bombings, it is still quite a sight to see these gothic remnants in a modern day city. Take the elevator up the steeple for impressive views (but don't do it if you are not a fan of heights) and take the stairs down to the museum for some more history.

A nice place to visit but not on Tuesdays. In the vecinity there is a outdoor parking space. There are a lot of parking spaces. There is a pay maschine where you need to pay the parking. The Church itself is very beautiful. On Tuesdays the elevator and the Underground Museum is close. We were unlucky because we visited on a Tuesday. Big place, tall tower. Beautiful details and architecture. 100% worth it.

Similar to the Coventry, standing inside destroyed church, you just feel the war wiping everything and everyone. Hundreds of years this place served as icon of hope and now it is a shallow reminder of their prays. Black and crippled.

  • 4/5 Hilda T. 2 years ago on Google
A pity the lift sevice to the tower has been suspended, otherwise it would be lovely to see the city of Hamburg from up there

  • 5/5 Kris M. 2 years ago on Google
Was only able to see the outside since we came late. Will definitely come back and see the museum

  • 5/5 Guilherme R. 2 years ago on Google
Maybe one of the most underrated attractions in Hamburg. The value charged for the visit and the lift is reasonably cheap and it worths every cent. The view is ok, even during not so sunny days (I was not that lucky), and the museum underground is fantastic! Definitely a must-go if you are interested in WWII, but not only. The museum has a very nice presentation, without losing substance, with good timelines and maps. One can spend 20 minutes or 2 hours to see everything, according to his/her own interest.
