Impressive building by Mies van der Rohe, recently restored. The Isa Genzken exhibition was well done, and a free booklet and map were provided which helped me appreciate the philosophy and techniques involved in the artist's work, which has evolved over many decades. I enjoyed the elliptical and hyperbolic art from the 1960s, and the Covid-19 Nefertiti, but was less impressed by the hanging chairs with stickers and cellophane wraps. The rooms which normally exhibit a sample of the museum's impressive in-house collection ("Sammlung") - following a rotation system for the lesser known works and artists - was closed for refurbishment/rearrangement when I visited in late October 2023, during the same week when the Pergamon Museum closed. Indications that "the collection is closed" on the website were hard to fathom without further explanation of what is meant by "the collection". I was a bit disappointed that a big section of the museum was closed given that some of the other important state museums in Berlin were closed or partly closed for refurbishment at the same time (not to mention the Pergamon which had been fully booked for weeks until its decades-long closure). I thought the end of October could be a good time to visit museums in Berlin but the curators seem to think differently. Given that these museums belong to the same agency, they could have coordinated a staggered plan for the closures. I was also a bit annoyed that, though I had booked a timeslot well in advance, I needed to wait in line to enter with the people who had just acquired their tickets on the spot. Maybe this was due to the fact that I visited on a Thursday evening with extended hours when a German car company was sponsoring free tickets. But what's the point in asking people to get a separate (free) timeslot ticket (besides the regular museum entry ticket) using a complicated online box office procedure, if you don't sort out the visitors at the exhibition entrance?

Architektonisch sehr interessanter Bau.

The building and its idea behind is simple and amazing. The collection is academic and leads you through epochs and styles. I found few really interesting objects and paintings. Need to come back to discover more

Absolutely amazing permanent collection. So well curated and presented. I learned so much. If you like art of the 20th century, there's nowhere better. The staff was reserved but informative. Not over the top friendly but all totally fine. Really blown away and will be buying an annual pass. Just to come visit and get inspired sometimes (and just to support anyway). Highly recommended for visual artists. If you're a designer, I think there's a lot of inspiration here, even if relatively indirect.

With the most recent exhibition of European modernism, one of the most interesting museums on the map of Berlin. The buiding itself designed by Mies van der Rohe is a state-of-art structure, a true architectural jewell! Not only the ground floor is impressive, but also the underground rooms are surprisingly spacious. The current exhibition includes less known works by Picasso, Dali, Klimt and many others. A must-see!

There are few different collections here. The museum is rather small but they have a section on sculptures, contemporary art, painting and film. The museum is not very extensive and not crowded so 2 hours is enough.

Stop by this place if you’re into modern art. It’s probably my most favorite museums in Berlin. The museum itself is not that big but it has nice exhibition spaces. The sculture garden in the back was really cool; don’t forget to check it out.

What a great museum! Not a huge collection, but very important works of 20th century expressionism. And we considered the way the works were displayed as the best we’ve ever experienced. Additionally, the timed tickets kept the crowd to a minimum. A must see for lovers of German (mainly) art and sculpture from that period.

we went here for a school trip and I really enjoyed glimpsing at all the beautiful paintings. the rooms are rather cold, so make sure to either go here in summer or wear a sweater! rooms, toilets and gallery are all clean, the staff also is really polite and friendly!

One of my favourite building’s in the world, a must see for modern and international style architecture buffs. Mies Van der Rohe is one of my favourite architects and this is one of his finest work. Ironically a gallery, for me the building itself is the greatest artwork. The whole structure has just undergone a massive restoration and renovation, meaning that the whole site is brand new and shiny and as glorious as it was when it first opened. Even without going in there’s plenty of modern sculpture to admire on the plaza surrounding it as well as view down to the sculpture garden. The whole place is ringed by a bench you can sit or lie down on and relax. Located about a 5 minute walk from the U2 U Bahn station Mendelssohn Bartholdy Park and about a 10 min walk to the major Bahnhof Potsdamer Platz. Definitely worth a stop by especially for architecture enthusiasts…

The place is nice and open, and the Alexander Calder instalation was beautifully put together. There is a possibility to interact with some chess boards, but we did not have the opportunity to because there was no information on where to get the pieces. The permanent collection has lots of prints, pictures, sculptures and an specific area about the museum itself. After visiting other main museums in town, this one seemed less gratifying.

We are coming back for sure. Some kind of tradition. And it is that Museum reflecting contemporary art and society in Berlin and whole Germany. Just go and enjoy.

Great building. Just to see the main floor you don’t need to buy a ticket. Downstairs are the museum shop and a cafe.

The building is interesting and the exhibits are well presented and uncomplicated. I often find museums and galleries too “heavy”, so enjoyed the “lightness” of this one. Also found the realism of this contemporary art to be more meaningful than looking at “Madonna and the Child”, if you know what I mean.

I had a chance to visit this museum in 2023. It was Iza Genzken exhibition. Building is impressive. You won’t believe it was built in 60s. There is always temporary and permanent exhibitions.

  • 5/5 Vanessa M. 6 months ago on Google • 72 reviews
Take time to use the Isa Genzken information booklet at the entrance to follow through the exhibit. Exhibit felt like there wasn't enough space for each piece of work for full effect. Can be truly immersive and fun if you take your time with it. Exhibits on lower level can also be thought provoking. Excellent choice for contemporary art lovers and a good pick for one of the options for the museum pass.

I was extremely impressed and touched by this spectacular museum and the exhibition I've seen. I could have spent a full day there taking in all the experiences and the subtleties of every object exposed. Excellent lay out, great audio guide, rich array of stimuli - everything contributed to creating a very enriching, thought-provoking experience. I loved the themes, the powerful visuals, and all the detailed work that went into creating this world-class experience. The building itself is gorgeous, the design so inviting for reflection and perspective. I look forward to going back there soon!

Medium sized modern Art Museum with collection from 1950-2000. Will take an hour, maybe slightly more to see it all if in a rush, else a couple of hours. The building and cafe are also really nice - architecturally speaking. Overall, Loved this museum. Been meaning to come here for a while but had never made it. Totally recommend.

Perfect place to spend your Sunday in Berlin, and specially when it’s raining outside. A great overview of modern art in the city in the first half of the 20th century and the occasional contemporary art project upstairs. The building itself is impressive as well so overall a definite must stop when visiting the city.

A design classic by Mies van der Rohe freshly renovated. Fascinating to see with some great exhibits on the lower floor. It’s somewhat astonishing to me that the classic superstructure that you see as a pavilion has little purpose and the gallery is below. There’s a lovely lower garden too with sculptures and planting and amazingly no balustrade protection at the top to stop people falling - there’s a polite sign in German and English to say don’t step on here or you might fall…! We wouldn’t get away with this in the uk…!

  • 4/5 Stephani W. 9 months ago on Google
The only reason we went inside was because it was about to rain. We got tickets right away, no waiting in line. It wasn't expensive and coat check was free. So that was great. I wasn't all that impressed with the art, i have a love hate relationship with contemporary and modern art, so its just my opinion. There was a lot of art pieces I truly enjoyed, and recommend this museum to any art lover.

Beautiful recently renovated iconic Mies van der Rohe Building in the heart of Berlin. Exhibitions there are small due to the limited size of the building but well curated.

A pleasant gallery, open space, natural lighting, easy access and super close from Potsdammer Platz. Most enjoyable. Underground there are more exhibitions, a nice coffee, a shop and good restrooms.

Unique place and a must see while visiting Berlin. The gallery has a lot of history of German art explained and everyone could find here something that would suit them. I recommend checking out the history of the building itself as well as other works of the extraordinary architect behind it - Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Apart from the gallery you can check out the museum shop where you could find some of the works as postcards and posters!

The Calder exhibition is 'klein aber fein' but my ticket was also for the standing exhibition: 1900 -1945 and that was fantastic! Paintings from 'Die Brücke' und 'Der Sturm' Gruppen and others. Adored the painting by Lotta Laserszein in the downstaors foyer!

10 starts for the architecture, the exhibition and the staff is warm-welcoming. Minus 6 stars for the café. Staff absent and the product quality is poor. 10€ for burnt espresso and indecent cappuccino is not acceptable

It's like a funeral building. Ugly! Tickets sold out at 10 o’clock. You can't even stay in the lobby to check the information without tickets. A young staff member will drive you out and be very rude, as if you broke into his house. The older person at least said that he would allow you to go to the underground ticket office for consultation.

First of all, the building itself it’s worth visiting, Mies Van Der Rohe was a visionary architect. There’s always a new exhibit at the top floor of the museum and then the other floor has the permanent collection of the Gallery including works from Paul Klee, Picasso , Magritte etc. Worth taking the day to visit.

The Neue National Galerie is architecturally stunning, a roof overhangs so lightly above a simple glass structure. There is an underground gallery that was much larger than expected with some incredible works to see.

After so many years of renovation, it is open! I am a regular there and I cannot get enough of it. The collections, the atmosphere, and just being there is a treat. Get the annual membership! You won’t regret it.

Architecture fans and students are recommended to visit this building since it was an architectural masterpiece from Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Fine Calder exhibition in the large rooms on the ground floor. Good information on building history and architecture. The history of its creation is presented in a very complex manner.

This gallery was suggested to visit by a friend. The staff was friendly, but insisted to leave your staff in lockers. Art was amazing to see. I especially loved a Giacometti statue and Picasso painting. I only got the tickets for downstairs, but for a couple of euros more you can also see the upstairs exhibit.

After six years of wait and finally opened. Buying tickets in advance is highly recommended. More amazed by the building than the exhibitions. The mirrors inside were perfect resonance of the phenomenal and literal transparency the building is conveying.
