Batadomba Lena is located in a highland called “Vithana Kanda” within a short distance from Ekneligoda area that belongs to Kuruvita Korale. It can be reached from the Kuruwita-Sripada road starting from Ratnapura- Colombo highway. This is centered in between 6046` to 607` latitudes and 80023` to 80024` longitudes belonging to low-country in wet-zone spread from 1400 m to 1500 m of contour lines. Also this historical den is located 234 m above sea level. The surrounding land of Batadomba Lena that spans over about 35 acres has been promulgated as an archaeological reserve. The foremost primordial fossil of modern anthropoid in South Asia has been discovered in this cavern. The first excavation was done in Batadomba Lena in 1938 by Dr. P.E.P. Daraniyagala who was then the Director of Museum of Sri Lanka Museum Department. Thereafter, this place of history has undergone several excavations conducted by the Department of Archaeology based on the information given by villagers. Until then this cavern was abandon for the wild to invade. Both “Maha Lena” (large cave) and “Kuda Lena” (small cave) are located on a gigantic rock that would rise about 78 m tall. As a whole, this rock can be considered as a fusion of a stretch of caves that spans for about 500 m and the two caves in two extremities are larger than the others. The cavern at right side is the largest of all. “Maha Lena” would measure about 28 m long, 12 m wide at face and 8 m wide at back. “Kuda Lena” is only 9 m long and 9.4 m wide. “Maha Lena” is spacious enough to shade easily little more or less than 1000 people at once. Through an excavation a fossilized skeleton of a woman and several tools which were used by people lived in the Stone Age have been discovered at the left wall of “Kuda Lena”. The excavations done in 1979, 1980 and 1981 were directed by Dr. S.U. Daraniyagala, the Assistant Commissioner of Archaeology at that time.

Had to climb 1.5km from the bottom. Initially there are few stairs but when you go inside just stone and footpaths to the summit. Must say it's a difficult climb but a rewarding one. Really enjoyed it. 🙂

Most of the photos uploaded here are incorrect! This is not a place with a temple but there is a Buddha statue and an archaeological site placed inside the cave. People confuse this cave with a nearby cave called Batathotalena cave and have uploaded the pictures taken there at this place. Even google maps do not give correct directions to this place. If you're coming from Kuruwita side, turn right from Eknaligoda Walawwa and travel for 2-3 km and you'll come across the Batadombalena lane. It'll start with cemented staircase followed by a rocky staircase inside the jungle. You will have to travel for about 1.5 km inside the jungle to get to the Batadombalena cave. Very nice place to visit. Hike is not that difficult and it's worthy. A person in Colombo can cover this in one day. Also be aware on rain season. Because water level will rise. Very nature friendly atmosphere and please do not leave plastic and polythene. Just leave the trail.

Challenging yet rewarding hike. Beware of leeches. There was a beautiful stream which forms several little waterfalls. Careful when you 're going with young kids as the the pathway is slippery.

The Batatotalena Cave, also known as the Diva Guhava in Buddhist literature, is a cavesystem in Sudagala, 8 km (5 mi) away from the town of Kuruwita, in the Sabaragamuwa Province of Sri lanka. The cave measures approximately 15 m (49 ft) high, 18 m (59 ft) wide, and 25 m (82 ft) in length, totalling the internal cave area to 6,800 m3 (240,000 cu ft). Accessing the cave involves a 400 m (1,300 ft) hike from Sudagala, and an additional 50 m (160 ft) climb to reach the cave entrance. Approximately 30 m (98 ft) from the cave is another partially submerged cave, which is accessible after a 20 m (66 ft) swim. In Buddhism, it is believed to be the cave in which the Lord Buddha spent the day after placing his footprint on Adam's Peak, from where he supposedly proceeded to Dighavapi.

Diva Guhawa is mentioned in ancient Buddhist Chronicles as a cave that was visited by the Buddha, he is said to have stayed here the day after visiting Siri Pada (Adam’s Peak). In the 20th century, the famous Batatota Lena, a cave near Kuruwita which is known for its for ist prehistoric findings, has been identified with this Buddha-visited place and became a major Buddhist pilgrimagesite. Inside of Diva Guhawa are several sculptures and decorations from the Kandyan and colonial period and images houses, making this large rock shelter a quite colourful place. In height, the cave measures up to 15 meters. Accessing the shrines of Diva Guhawa requires climbing several stairways along a half-kilometer hike from Sudagala Source: lanka excursions holidays

This place has a great historical value for Sri Lankans and Buddhists. It could be a bit difficult for elderly as you have to to climb up for about 15 minutes. But you can find many statues on the way presenting various life events of Buddha and once you go up you will get a great view of below and there are young monks describing the historical tale of the place and they will give you freshwater dripping from the roof up above don't worry they are very clean.Going back is not as much as difficult as that road is shorter than the way up.So if you find it hard to climb then use the exit pathway to go up (near the Sul tree) but you will not find any statues.(I know it is the wrong way but if it is not too crowded its ok).Dont froget to take a look at samanala kanda. There is a place to look at it and ask someone if you can't find it.

Second oldest cave in terms of pre historic human, Balangoda man was discovered. The journey is picturesque and adventurous. We visited during dry weather which helped climbing. More attention on preservation of the site needed.

Batadombalena is an archaeological site with evidence of habitation from 8,000 years BCE, Balangoda Man, located 85 km (52.8 mi) from Colombo in Sri Lanka, a two-hour drive from Colombo. The Batadombalena archaeological site contains evidence of habitation from as early as 8,000 years BCE and is one of the sites whose discoveries support the "Out of Africa" hypothesis, according to Professor Paul Mellars, a Cambridge University archaeologist. Among the evidence of Balangoda Man he unearthed at the site were stone tools that are interpreted as arrow - or spearheads and carefully shaped and perforated beads made from ostrich eggshell fragments. One particular piece of an ostrich eggshell, incised with a distinctive criss-cross motif, has also been discovered. Batadombalena Cave has a size of roughly 50 ft × 60 ft × 80 ft (15 m × 18 m × 24 m).

One of the caves found evidences of prehistoric "Balangoda man'. Presently a property owned and conserved by archeology department. evidences shows the presence of human activities 37,000BP. Excavation hole renovated and located inside the cave. Associated rainforest contained a high biodiversity value including birds, reptiles ,amphibians ,mammals, freshwater fish. Possible oneday visit from Colombo. From the road about 30 minutes have to travel upto the mountain to reach the cave.

This cave is believed to be the resting place of Buddha and disciples during the visit to Sri Pada mountain. There is a bit steep climb which is paved but might tire out older folks.

A cave which used in the pre historic era. You have to climb 1.5 kms from the main road through the jungle. We went in the rainy season so there were many leeches but we were so lucky to enjoy the view of beautiful water streams with cool water
