It is the place which concealed the sacred tooth relic for 43 years from the foreign armies in a "kurahan gala". The shrine contains paintings depicting the story of the sacred tooth relic and how it was brought to Sri Lanka and how it finally located at the temple of tooth relic-Kandy today. Ample parking is available but the access road might need a repair.

(Translated by Google) The Delgamuwa Raja Maha Viharaya in Kuruwita, Sri Lanka is considered as one of the most important Buddhist sites in the country. The reason for this is that the sacred Tooth Relic of Sri Dalada Maligawa has been kept safe for 43 years. History, The written history of the Delgamuwa Raja Maha Vihara dates back to the Seethawaka period. In the Rajavalis and the minor Rajavalis written at the same time, this temple has been called the Saparagamu Vihara. In the Mahavamsa, the Delgamuwa Raja Maha Viharaya was known as the Labujagama Vihara. In addition, the Delgamuwa Viharaya has been mentioned in the Savul Sandeshaya written by Alagiyawanna Mukavetithuman. It is said that this temple was very advanced during the Kotte era. The Tooth Relic King Buwanekabahu V (1375 - 1391) visited the sacred Tooth Relic in the kingdom of Kotte. The king also built a Dalada Maligawa in Kotte. However, with the arrival of the Portuguese in 1505 CE, the safety of the tooth relic has become a problem. After King Vijayabahu VI was assassinated by his enemies, the kingdom of Kotte was divided by his three sons, which was ruled by King Buwanekabahu VII (1521 - 1551), Mayadunna by Seethawaka and Raigambandara by Paswalallavita Korale. After the death of King Buwanekabahu VII of Kotte, there was no heir to the throne of the Kingdom of Kotte. King Dharmapala, who was declared a puppet king of the Portuguese, later changed his name to Don Juan, embracing Christianity. The monks and the Diyawadana Nilame of Diyawadana Hiripitiya Diyawadana Nilame of the Diyawadana Nilame at the time realized that the protection of the Sacred Tooth Relic was a serious threat to the Kingdom of Kotte. As a result it was unsafe to keep the sacred Tooth Relic in the Kotte Kingdom. Delighted to have the Tooth Relic, King Mayadunne offered it to the Sacred Tooth Relic. King Mayadunne, Diyawadana Nilame and Shad Bhasha Parameswara Mahilankara Thero who was in the Delgamuva Vihara at that time, hid the sacred Tooth Relic in a Kurahan stone behind the Buddha Statue to protect the Tooth Relic. In the meantime, Mayadunne was assassinated by his son Tikiri, who became king of Seethawaka Rajasinghe. King Seethawaka Rajasinghe was displeased with the saints and many people for being a patriarch. The king also tried to kill the Buddhist monks during this period by deceiving the South Indian invader Aritta Kendu. However, Konapu Bandara who had fled to the fields during this period, embraced Christianity under the name of Don Juan and returned to Lanka and returned to Lanka and defeated King Rajasinghe and defeated him and became the first Wimaladharmasturiya to become a Buddhist king. Realizing that it was the king's faith as a Buddhist ruler, Mahinda Thero of the Delgamuva Viharaya handed over the sacred Tooth Relic to the King for 43 years. King Wimaladharmasuriya built the Dalada Maligawa in Kandy and placed the Sacred Tooth Relic. Ruins, However, the temple was later destroyed by the Portuguese and there are only a few old ruins. Among them are an old staircase, part of the cavern, a seat, and an old Bodhi tree. The historic Kurahan stone, which has been preserved for many years by the Tooth Relic, is now revered in the Viharaya as a sacred object. An ancient temple that has now been renovated. This temple is where the tooth relic of Buddha was hidden during a Portuguese invasion. During the 13th Century the tooth relic was placed in Kurunegala, it was then moved into Kotte. Later in the 15th Century during the Portuguese invasion the tooth relic was at a risk and the kings and the Buddhist monks at that time hid the tooth relic in a "Kurahan Gala"(Grinding stone) until the threat from the Portuguese went away. The Kurahan Gala is on display at the temple. The temple also has 4 recently constructed Devalaya.

This is a historic place, during the invasion of Portuguese, Sri Lankans hid "Sacred Tooth Relic of Buddha" in this temple. After the massive destruction and ultimate cruelty of Portuguese on Buddhist and locals, "Diyawadana Nilame Hiripitiye Divana Rala", who was the custodian of the tooth relic, moved the relic from the Kotte Kingdom to King Mayadunne of Sitawaka (now Avissawella) for safekeeping in 1549. In 1592 Konappu Bandara, who conquered the throne of Kandy Kingdom, changed his name as Wimaladharmasuriya I and reclaimed the tooth relic from Delgamuwa vihara in Ratnapura to Kandy.

A extremely sacred and noble place which all who come to Ratnapura must pay homage to. A land that was comforted by the Sacred Left Tooth Relic of the Supreme Buddha. The temple in which the Sacred Tooth Relic was hid in a Kurahan Gala or stone used to grind finger millet during the Portuguese invasions. May my homage be to the Sacred Tooth Relic🙏🙏🙏 May my homage be the Supreme Buddha🙏🙏🙏

The written history of Delgamuwa Vihara goes back to the time period of Sitawaka kingdom. During the past this temple was known as Saparagamu Vihara and Labujagama Viharaya as well.[3] With the arrival of the Portuguese in 1505 and the death of the King Bhuwanakabahu VII of Kotte Kingdom, a political turmoil was caused in the country. This was intensified with the embracement of Catholicism by succeeded King Don Juan Dharmapala. This incidence led the then Diyawadana Nilame Hiripitiye Divana Rala, who was the custodian of the tooth relic, to move the relic from Kotte Kingdom to King Mayadunne of Sitawaka (now Avissawella) for safe keeping in 1549.[4] With the guidance of king Mayadunne the tooth relic was brought to Delgamuwa Vihara for further safekeeping, and kept it in a Kurahan (Eleusine coracana) grinding stone at the Vihara premises.[5] In 1592 Konappu Bandara, who conquered the throne of Kandy again, changed his name as Wimaladharmasuriya I and reclaimed the tooth relic from Delgamuwa vihara in Ratnapura to Kandy. He managed to build a separate two-storied palace to enshrine the tooth relic within the palace complex.[6] A few years after the removal of tooth relic, the temple was robbed and demolished by the Portuguese who constructed a fort there later.[2][4]
