Taking the shape of a Bo leaf or a “Bo patha” (Ficus religiosa), Bopath falls lies in the village of Agalwatte in Kuruwita of Ratnapura district, Sri Lanka. Though this is only 30m in height, the unique beauty of the waterfall draws many travellers to this place, all year round. Kuru Ganga river, which later joins Kalu Ganga river plunges down in 3 steps to create this magnificent waterfall. The reason why this fall is very popular among travellers is how easily it can be reached from Colombo. This is said to be the most comprehensively studied waterfall in Sri Lanka. The rainfall in this area is usually very high and Kuru Ganga brings along a massive amount of water from Peak Wilderness Sanctuary, where the sacred Sri Pada mountain resides. Both falls is famous for flash floods and travellers have been trapped in small islands around the falls because you can never predict about the water of Kuru Ganga river. When you park your vehicle at the parking point, you need to walk along the road to reach the entrance to the waterfall, where a ticket is issued. You can view the waterfall from there sitting on the stairs. If you feel that you need to get a better look since the view is partially blocked by massive bamboo trees, you can get on a small raft and get to the other shore, walk a few hundred meters and reach the base of the waterfall. This will be an enjoyable walk among tall and shady trees. The water level is usually low and it’s not risky to take the raft. The surrounding area is a sanctuary for tree life, and you will be surrounded by many giant tree species like attikka, midella, dun and ginihota. Don’t be surprised if you meet a wild boar or a meeminna deer in the area, since the jungle around the fall is home to them as well. If you look well in the water, you will get fascinated by seeing many species of fish, such as Bulathhapaya, Magura, Korali and eel. Every beautiful waterfall has a tragic story and this beauty brings one such story as well. A young pilgrim from Colombo has visited here and has lost his way. A local village girl has given him shelter and before his departure, she has become pregnant. The young pilgrim who left her promising to return never did and the heartbroken girl plunged to her death from the top of the waterfall. Villagers say that her ghost, a floating blue light haunts the waterfall during certain times. Another story is that a treasure trove lies at the bottom of the waterfall and to retrieve it, one should sacrifice a thousand humans to the waterfall. When you visit Bopath falls, don’t forget to visit the rarely visited Dodam Ella, which resides a little further down the same road.

Visiting Bopath Ella Waterfall was an exhilarating experience, filled with both awe-inspiring beauty and a few cautionary notes to keep in mind. Nestled amidst lush greenery, this waterfall offers a captivating sight that will leave you mesmerized. However, it's important to be aware of certain factors before planning your trip. First and foremost, it's crucial to exercise caution when approaching the waterfall. The water depth can be quite deep, making it potentially dangerous to get too close. While the view from a safe distance is still stunning, it's essential to prioritize your safety and heed any warning signs or guidelines provided. Regarding ticket prices, the entry fee for locals is around Rs. 20 (not sure about the current prices now), which is quite reasonable. However, for foreigners, the ticket price may be around Rs. 200 depending on the Exchange Rates. Keep this in mind when planning your budget for the visit. Another important aspect to consider is the fluctuating water levels. After 5pm, the water levels tend to increase, potentially making the surroundings more treacherous. It's advisable to exercise extra caution during this time and ensure you have a safe vantage point from which to admire the waterfall. Despite these safety considerations, the Bopath Ella Waterfall is undoubtedly a sight to behold. The cascading waters, surrounded by lush vegetation, create a picturesque scene that will leave you in awe of nature's grandeur. The mesmerizing sound of the waterfall adds to the overall ambiance, making it a perfect spot for nature enthusiasts and photographers alike.

Bopath Falls is located in the village of Agalwatta in the Ratnapura District of Sri Lanka. The Kuru River, a tributary of the Black River, cascades down 30 meters (95 feet) high through a narrow opening from the top of a mountain at one point in her journey. The name 'Bopath Ella' is derived from the fact that the stream collapses in the form of a Bo leaf when there is good water. The first body of water, which falls through a narrow opening, then expands, reminiscent of the shape of a palm leaf.Bopath Ella is a beautiful place that attracts the attention of local tourists today. Height in Bopath Ella Falls: 30 metres Route:One road from Colombo to Ratnapura-Colombo A4 to Bopath Ella has fallen off at Higgashena Junction and the other near Kuruwita Police Station. This waterfall can be accessed through these two access roads which are equidistant. The village where Bopathella is located is called Agalawatta. Distance from the main road is 03 km. Although it was not noticed by most people two or three decades ago, today Bopath Falls has become a major tourist attraction. This may be due to its location in a densely populated area and a place of free and beautiful surroundings that can be reached very quickly. In addition to the beauty of the surface, there is also a scary, dangerous nature associated with this waterfall. More than 80 people have been killed so far due to careless climbing along the slope of the falls and other causes. Reckless behavior in an unfamiliar place and going to work under the influence of alcohol are the main cause of these deaths. The Kuruwita Pradeshiya Sabha has constructed a car park, a viewing area and a toilet complex near the waterfall. In addition, there are several restrooms with residential facilities run by private companies. The large number of people who visit Bopath Falls, as well as the polythene, bottle shells and various food waste that they dump into the environment, severely damage the aesthetics of the surrounding environment. So bring back everything you carry. We all have a responsibility to protect the country's natural heritage.

A superb Waterfall. The main attraction of Kuruwita. There are several places for parking and the rates are reasonable. There are small shops along the way to the entrance and tickets need to be purchased. There are a very large area for having a bath but direct bathing from the waterfall is not accessible. Need to have a tricky and hash walk up the stream on rocks to reach the optimal place. Risk is involved on slipping. Need to adhere to given instructions. Water level could rise or fall without notice. It rose about 1 foot when we returned. However, the surrounding and the waterfall was breathtaking, so the overall experience was Great.

Another natural beauty of Sri Lanka which attracts both local and foreign tourists. Located just off the rathnapura road. You have to walk a bit after the car park and to see the fall at its full view you can take a short footpath through the wild. A nice experience which is worth the time. Bathing and swimming is not recommended though.

The Bopath Falls cascades in the shape of a bo (Ficus religiosa) tree (hence its name) and is the most comprehensively studied fall in Sri Lanka. Its source is the Kurugana River that later joins the Kaluganga River at Kurugaomaodara. The average temperature of the area is 26.9 – 27.8 degrees Celsius and the annual rainfall of the fall’s catchment area is 5080mm. The mean speed of the flow is 6 cubic metres per second. The upper reach of the fall is made up of granite and biotite virin, and is covered by sand. The water from the fall irrigates the paddy fields of the Udakada and Kuruwita areas. The surrounding plant and tree life includes attikka (Ficus racimosa), kumbuk (Terminalia arjuna), midella, dun (Doona spp), para (Wormia suffruticosa), ginihota (Cythia spp), rathmadiya, ketala (Lagenendra oveta), Beduru (Dryneria spp), orchids, varieties of meewana (Madhca) badal, hanassa, makulu and beduru. Animal species include wild boar, Meemina deer and reptiles, and the water is home to many species of fish including bulathhapaya, lellu, magura, korali, sonnu and eel. In addition to its rich bio-diversity, the fall is also steeped in folklore. One such story tells how a youth from Colombo made a pilgrimage here, and on losing his way was helped and sheltered by a local village girl A love developed between the two and she became pregnant before his departure. He left, promising to return but never did. Overcome with grief, she took her own life by plunging into the fall. Villagers say that her ghost (which appears as a floating blue light) haunts the fall. Another local belief is that a treasure trove lies somewhere within the fall and that one thousand human sacrifices are needed to retrieve it. Bopath Falls is in the Ratnapura District, Kuruwita Divisional Secretariat at Agalwatte village. Take the road from Columbo to Ratnapura and turn left along Devipahala road. After 3km the fall is reached. (The Dodam Falls is located close by).

Magnificent waterfall. Bopath Ella is a waterfall situated in the Ratnapura District of Sri Lanka. It has a shape very similar to the leaf of the Sacred fig or "Bo" tree, which has earned it this name. The waterfall is a major tourist attraction in the country. Local myths say that it is haunted and that it hides a treasure trove. There's a car park near the fall so you can travel by a vehicle. There's 750m to the waterfall if you park in car park in a busy day. But you can park near the waterfall entrance. You can go near the waterfall if it's not a rainy season. But be careful.

(Translated by Google) This waterfall is about 98 feet high and is located in the beautiful village of Angalawattanam inside the town of Kuruwita in the Ratnapura District. People believe that this waterfall is called Bopath Ella because of its shape similar to a Bo leaf. The waterfall is also surrounded by beautiful forests. The waterfall is fed by the Kuru River, a tributary of the Kalu River. No matter how beautiful the waterfall may seem on the surface, accidents have so far claimed the lives of nearly 100 people. Villagers say many people have died from slipping due to alcohol consumption. Legend has it that some rulers in history used to bathe in this place before worshiping the Samandevala. According to the villagers, Saman strongly believes that this place has the love of God. There are also a number of other myths associated with this waterfall, namely that a village girl who had an argument with her boyfriend committed suicide by jumping from this waterfall and her soul is still floating here. Another well-known fact is that there is an ancient treasure hidden in this waterfall and it takes about 1000 people to get it. No matter what the superstitious beliefs, this place close to the capital contributes immensely to our tourism industry. Many villagers make a living from this waterfall and live in this village. In fact, this waterfall is a treasure trove for the villagers of this village. Beautiful waterfall and surrounding... The local authorities charge from visitors but doesn't have a decent toilet even... No proper place to view the fall, people walk through the bushes or the dangerous path through the rocks to get a decent view.. Could have done with a decent viewing gallery and a proper walking path.. littering is as usual.. people needs to be more disciplined and cautious about the environment....

Marvellous Waterfall at Kuruwita, Rathnapura. Can reach closer to the Waterfall by a vehicle and nearly 3km away from the main road. No words to explain the beauty of the Waterfall and surrounding environment. However, it's said that so many people have lost their lives because of their negligence. We reached to the top of the Waterfall and the top is like a leaf of "Bo" leaf. I also noticed stupid people jumping from one edge of the top of Waterfall to the other edge and so many have fallen onto the Waterfall and died. So please follow your safety always. Can have bath near the Waterfall but on rainy days suddenly the water level can rise and you will get caught or even can die. We also had a bad experience with sudden rising of water level and with the blessings of God " Sumana Saman" we could save our lives.

Narrow road to get to the place so if it's a busy day expect vehicle clogs. After parking you get to walk about 750m to the water fall. You have to walk through a shallow water pool to get their so get your shorts and slippers ready. Near the Bobath fall rocks are very slippery (as expected) so be precautious. Good place to have a bath but not on rainy day s. There's a car park much nearly to the entrance so if you're traveling by a small vehicle (car) avoid the first car park and head for the second car park.

Nice waterfall, massive area, we went in early November, water level was good. Can cross the small river by foot and get a bit wet or take the free raft service. Then trek up to the base of the falls, nice area and not too crowded. Entry Rs 100 or Rs 150 for foreigners (not sure) includes boat service.

Bopath ella still remain as beautiful as it used to be. It falls down creating the heavenly view which you would never catch anywhere else I would say. Hugh water flow dings its usual rhythm, not knowing nobody is around to watch it and admire. Its so panic to see the place is desserted amd desperate, showing the tragic that happened to the country There were no single visitor there when we reached the place. I can remember how busy the place was when I visited it 1997. Even those days the place was producing income sources for a lot of people in different ways. Today it is vacant. But the fall, may be it does not what has happened falls down as usually adding never ending beauty to mother Lanka.

Bopath Falls is a breathtakingly beautiful waterfall located in the village of Agalwatta in the Ratnapura District of Sri Lanka. The cascading waterfalls down from a height of 30 meters (95 feet) through a narrow opening, creating a stunning display of nature's power and beauty. The name 'Bopath Ella' is derived from the shape of the stream, which collapses in the form of a Bo leaf when there is water. The first body of water falls through a narrow opening, then expands, reminding us of the shape of a palm leaf. However, it's important to be cautious and mindful when visiting this beautiful site. With over 80 reported deaths so far, it's crucial to avoid reckless behavior such as climbing along the slope of the falls or going there under the influence of alcohol. Overall, Bopath Falls is a must-visit spot for anyone who loves nature and appreciates its awe-inspiring beauty. But it's essential to prioritize safety and respect the power of nature while enjoying this amazing natural wonder

This leaf-shaped waterfall is very popular amongst tourists. You can easily reach to the bottom of the fall through trees. But, water sudden rise in the water level in the rainy season can be dangerous. To reach the top of the waterfall, you must take a moderately difficult trail. Visit the place and have fun in the water.

About 400m journey from the vehicle park to the waterfall. There also need to walk about 200 meters to the nearest point of the fall. Barge is available to cross the shallow water. You can even walk across it. There are few close by resorts too.

So far the best waterfall I've been in Srilanka. Try going upwards to avoid the excess crowd and also enjoy the breathtaking view of the waterfall.

One of the main, Bopath Falls is a beauty in all kinds of ways. Bathing is possible at your own risk. I enjoyed the view here so much and love to be there again.

Bopathella falls is situated in Kuruvita and this falls is tourist attraction. When you enter to the falls' zone it will cost 20 rs for tickets. And there is a water stream with small reppids. You can also bath there. To reach the falls you have to pass the stream and small woods with bamboo trees End of the bamboo trees u will have a first closet glimpse of the falls. And also you have to pass small rocks. Beware small rocks so slippy. There is a small natural pool at the base of the falls. You can have a bath too. Beware when you bath water level can be increase.

Wonderful Place. Have a car park near the waterfall and you go near the waterfall by the boat or you can go by foot.please do not bath when the water level is high. Otherwise its okay. Before bathing ask locals for a safe place.
