Let’s start with the positive: - The location is super great, street is mostly safe, very close to restaurant. - Staffs is nice and helpful when needed. - The breakfast is great value and good. - Common area are nice. Now with the less positive: - The hostel in general is not clean: the room (10 beds) I was staying in was not clean, the sheets on the bed weren’t as well, bathrooms especially shower are not as well. But I think the worst was the kitchen, impossible to cook it was disgusting. Same for the pool, much smaller than shown on picture and not that clean. - The AC broke down in the room and 3 different people from the room and myself had to ask from them to do something (faire enough sometimes reception was busy, but no AC from 3pm to 8pm when it’s 40 degrees outside and no AC in common area is a no go) - Just very loud at night and rooms are just next to the bar (if you’re lucky you might be in the patio and if you’re lucky again no one is partying there when you are trying to sleep) - Most of time there wasn’t any soap in the shower, and no towels to dry hands. So I’ll just recommend STAYING AWAY, it might be just me but for the price you’re paying (over expensive for literally no reason) go somewhere else, most hostel give you rooms with ensuite for that price. And if you’re wondering why they have such a high rating (I was wondering the same thing), they offer a discount if you give 5 stars. Just go somewhere else.

Our room opens directly on to the bar area where VERY loud music plays until midnight, then they make a lot of noise cleaning up. Breakfast starts in the same area at 7:00, that's less than 7 hours when it is possible to sleep. Last night's drunken karaoke was unbearable. No hot water, one day there was no water at all in shower. They advertise food service, but they don't actually have any. Excellent location but otherwise only suitable for hard partiers.

Amazing, so fun, so many activities to join, so many friends to make! The whole experience is awesome, room was a good size. Front desk is super helpful shout out to Carlos🫶🏼, Jorge the Bartender 🙌🏽, and Tom and the person that makes the free coffee and tea which is so great! Location is perfectly close to everything. Best place to stay period.

It has a good location and it’s nice to mega new people but everything looks very old and run down. And for me the worst thing was the attitude of the stuff. Nobody was really nice, and one guy from the reception was really rude and not interested at all to help me. To make your own breakfast in the kitchen you have to share it with the ladies from the hostel who prepare the official breakfast. Kitchen was very dirty on top. There are no curtains in the room, the aircon was set by the hostel at 17 degrees Celsius. I was freezing at night. I definitely wouldn’t come here again. There are better hostels in Cartagena.

I HIGHLY recommend staying here! The staff are so friendly, genuine, and full of energy (special shout out to Stiven, Laura, Mango, & Arnold - the best bartender), the rooms are clean and comfortable, they organize a number of activities for the guests every day, and there’s a really good social atmosphere here. The people who stayed here while I was here were really friendly and approachable - we all hung out together almost every night and I did a day trip to the beach with two girls I had met here. The only downside to staying here is that there wasn’t any hot water for the showers but it was so hot while I stayed here (mid-December) that I didn’t really mind.

I'm not sure why this place is rated so high. This is probably the worst hostel I've visited so far (and I've gone to countless hostels all over the world, including Colombia). Viajero's front desk staff are the laziest and least caring hostel staff I've ever seen. They never have towels and don't even recommend alternatives when asking for one. When I finally got a towel after the 2nd day, I used it once and then the housekeepers took it when cleaning the rooms. When I ask for another towel they say they need to charge for it. This happened multiple times. The showers are dirty and hardly work (think weaker than a sink) with no hot water. Oh, and dont be surprised if the water runs out mid shower or dont run at all for the entire day, including the sinks, and toilets. The bathroom sinks NEVER had any hand soap (Theres an ongoing pandemic ffs) and the AC in the rooms are so weak you will sweat to death in your room. On my third day, I came back to someone else laying in my bed, which resulted in damaging my $300 prescription glasses the man was laying on top of! I asked the staff whats going on and they didnt bother apologizing for double booking and just moved me to another bed. They don't recommend any activities or tours either. When I asked to book a boat tour, the receptionist said I am all booked without telling me I had to pay when I arrive for the tour next day, this almost resulted in the cancellation of my tour when I showed up to the meeting spot thinking the tour was charged on my credit card rather than expected to bring cash. Luckily, my tour guide (not a part of the hostel) lent me money so I could do the tour. Ended up checking out of this hostel early after another issue with not being able to shower after swimming in the ocean. I checked out early and I asked the hostel for a refund for the extra nights that I am not staying, the recetionist said he can only refund one night. There isnt much of a social atmosphere also, despite being a packed hostel. I don't expect five star quality from hostels (and Ive been to some really bad ones) but this place takes the cake for worst hostel. I really cannot think of one good thing about this business. Save yourself from a nightmare if you want to enjoy Cartagena by booking elsewhere.

I've been 4 days in this hostel, the reception couldn't be bothered to help with room problem, AC not working with 32° outside. The ceiling in the toilet leaking for 2 days and nobody came to fix it or do something cause "too busy" at the reception

They dont care if you sleep! In the middle of the night employees come just in the room with new travelers, turn on the lights and start talking about the hostel and which bed to take and so... (The did this every night, sometimes up to 3-4 times) I mean, I have been to many many hostels, most of them are able to do the check in quietly and with respect to people sleeping. This one not! Rest of the Hostel is ok... No chillout areas where you can smoke. Tables and chairs are not very chill! Most of the time we sat on the floor... Would not stay again...

The hallways inside the hostel are like little streets. It's pretty, but it means most of the hostel is outdoors, and very, very hot. AC in the dorm was great. The staff turn it off in the daytime, but you can ask them to turn it back on. The kitchen was disappointing. It's small and incredibly hot as it's enclosed. The other guests (young party crowd) always left it in as mess. Bathrooms were also very hot. If you're looking for a chill hostel I'd avoid this one just because it seems to attract young partiers. If you plan to party all night and sleep all day, you'll probably like this place.

You have to give them a copy of your passport. Showing the passport is not enough for them. They don't accept other documents. The recepionist's attitude was rude and inpatient and she said "If you don't let me take a copy, you can't stay here". Google about identity theft and what can be done with a high quality copy of your passport and you will never let them take a copy of your passport again. There's no respect to privacy anymore.

I decided to book this hostel because of the sole purpose of making friends and meeting new people. Each day, they provided different activities and things to do for their guests which I loved. The location was perfect and we never had to Uber anywhere. Carlos, Lilly, and Stephy were all very accommodating and anticipated all our needs. Definitely would recommend this place!

This was my first time staying at a Viajero and it will now be my last. Front desk staff were quick to gaslight and didn’t give me many options. One woman followed me out the door and forced me to give up my room key even though my things were still in the room. Also they hired a woman to take people on nights out who didn’t speak English then tried to make it my fault for not understanding her. Lilli at the front desk is the bomb though I loved her. I would not recommend staying here as a black solo traveler either to be honest. I’ve stayed at many hostels but this was the first one that depending on who I talked to, I’d know if my problems would actually be resolved. For the treatment and up keep the place has, the price should be cheaper in my opinion.

The bartenders automatically add a 10% gratuity to every order without asking if the person buying wants to add it. I understand it might not be much money but not only is the service terrible (they are all grumpy and unapproachable) but the staff all seem to be in on it. I brought it up the first night and after a few hours I was told to show proof (the lady stopped adding the tip after I brought it up and tried saying the machine does it automatically). Second night there was a different bartender and she was doing the same thing and when I said I don’t want to add it she seemed shocked and gave attitude the rest of the night. Viajero are making a lot of money by doing this as most people are just tapping their card without looking at what they’re being charged. Poor principles and even poorer service.

Location was central and staff were very friendly. Shared dorm room was small, linen was quite old, below average cleanliness due to high use of services such as bathrooms, lounge areas, etc. there were towel rental fees, and overall was an average lodging experience at best. I suppose the low price makes it more appealing.

We stayed at this hostel in early January and had a terrible experience. In addition to wifi not working (at all throughout our stay) the place is in need of renovation and the "private rooms" were basically in a budget hotel the next street over. No atmosphere and no wifi. The "pool" is so tiny and so gross that not many people were crazy enough to go in it. The hostel said that they would refund our stay. Had they have done so we would not have felt the need to write such a review. However, after a whole month of emailing and whatsapping them they have still not refunded the agreed amount, despite written confirmation that they would. They have blamed bank transfers, the finance team and multiple other issues. It's been over 8 weeks since we stayed! The reason for the refund was primarily wifi not working at all throughout our whole stay and we needed it for video calling. We wanted to cancel and stay elsewhere but they would not let us as we had pre booked so we had to keep going to a cafe to FaceTime loved ones (it was New Year). I hope that they eventually sort out refund out.

The location was great and they had lots of activities and ways to meet people. It was definitely a hectic environment and loud at night. So don’t stay here if you’re trying to sleep before midnight or sleep in. The room wasn’t very clean and there was a lot of hair in the shower when we arrived. Otherwise everyone was very nice and welcoming.

Positives: Hostel located in a great spot for easy access to the city. Good social environment for tourists and backpackers. The beds were clean. Negatives: The rooms themselves weren’t cleaned that well. And when I arrived there were no towels for a day and a half. Overall cleanliness could be better. Takeaway: I would recommend to stay here if you want a party/social environment and want to make connections with fellow travellers.

Fun and funky, something going on most of the time. Good chill out areas for the quiet times and the bar/pool area for lively afternoons/evenings. Good bar, breakfast and staff are really helpful and loads of fun. The whole hostel is really clean and secure with a locked front door opened only be reception staff and CCTV cameras in the communal areas. Good lockers in the dorm rooms. Comfy beds and AC! Great location, just a few minutes' walk to the main drag and less than 5 minutes to a large supermarket. Hostel has a kitchen for your own stuff as well as provides meals to purchase. In reception there's a well stocked fridge for beers, water, coke etc and you can buy snacks too. There's a great little shop across the road that sorts laundry which is cheap and they stock beers and snacks etc.

Very social hostel with lots of activities etc However it’s a bit old and run down. The dorms weren’t great, very hot, not enough room for 12 people and their bags. Pool tiny for the amount of people staying there. Probably the worst Viajero I’ve stayed in in terms of quality - others have much better rooms in my experience. But it does have a very fun and sociable vibe

I really enjoyed staying here. The hostel hosts different events each night which makes it easy to meet people. Shout out to Mango for bringing the energy to all the organised activities! My only negative comment would be the A/C in the room doesn't necessarily reach the beds because of the way the beds are angled, so it can get warm at night.

Location was great for exploring this particular neighborhood. There were two grocery stores (éxito) and many restaurants as well within walking distance. Taxis almost had like a gathering area at the end of the street so it was a good area to go to in order to catch a taxi. The breakfast, which was around 15k-18k COP, was great. The staff were super friendly. My partner and I took a few classes which were great. I’m traveling and working and there’s no dedicated working area or area that is really good to work in without the possibility of a lot of noise. My room was in the bar area and there was music playing during the evenings all evening and night. Because of this, I wouldn’t recommend this hostel to an introverted digital nomad. But for the opposite—I 100% recommend. Also, my room had locks in the toilet and shower room that do not work. This gave the appearance of security until trying to use it. This does not give the greatest feeling of safety if staying in a mixed dorm. The toilet room did have a strong chemical smell though which is much better than no scent covering any smells at all. There were multiple bathrooms as well outside the room that any guest could use which I liked.

Loved the fact that each bed cubicle had its own charger sockets and light! Very grateful for the AC as well. Service was friendly and efficient, our door wasn’t opening and they got it fixed immediately. Really fun activities at night as well! Great for socialising :) (although can get pretty noisy at night)

I've stayed here before and I am amazed this time thanks to the renovated hostel. They clearly changed the private rooms, dorms and social spaces for the good! The Hostel is beautiful, great staff, bar and pool are amazing and it couldn't be better located! Fully recommended!

Wow, the chain that never disappoints. The hostel was great with spacious rooms and good common areas+kitchen. Located great.

Good location. Good for backpackers and solo trackers- very social. You will meet many people. The facilities are pretty mediocre. *air conditioning barley works and no fans- resulting in very warm nights!*. For me it was pretty bad, slept very bad in the heat.

Good location. Nice courtyard. Not a lot of activities or other amenities. Bring earplugs even if you are in a private room. Breakfast did have variety but you are better off going a few steps and get it elsewhere. Staff were basically just checking you in and out and didn’t provide anything further or seemed interested to help travelers with suggestions etc and they always seemed too busy. I think it might be helpful they have some info printed on a piece of paper for travelers and info about the hostel if no time to provide more help. Cold water showers only.

I don’t know why this place has so many Good Reviews… Pro: - the location is excellent! - free classes - cheap Con: - very dirty - showers get cleaned only ones a day / what’s not enough for so many people ! - lockers are not working or badly working - very loud

Viajero hostel is very well located inside the historical center of Cartagena. It is a laid back hostel with good music. Common areas are very comfortable, the kitchen is hot but it is properly equipped, the bathrooms were clean, the ac in the rooms worked fine. The bar is nice and it is a good place to stay for beers. The only downside were the beds, there is no curtain for privacy between bunk beds and they are rather small. I really enjoyed my stay. It is just like in the pictures.

Great location, but massively let down by, to name just a few complaints, small rooms, dirty bathrooms/showers, and being overall incredibly loud. Therefore not at all recommended, and should be avoided until these issues are fixed. The hostel is undergoing extensive renovation, and as such should not be open to the public for this period. The hostel is a construction site, with very loud work starting about 07:30 and going on until the early evening. In addition, the numerous construction workers use the same facilities as guests, and there is a high level of dust and dirt. The private room we stayed in was very small, the air conditioner only turned on and off with no further control. The bed however was comfortable. The hostel plays music in the common areas, which is in itself not bad. However, this is very loud and goes on until midnight, and starts again at about 07:00. Overall the bathrooms/showers were dirty. On our last day the lock on the room door broke and therefore the door simply opened without the key. The hostel has great potential, with comfortable beds and a very central location, but the issues stated far outweigh these, and it is highly recommended to avoid this hostel until the above issues are fixed.

Amazing staff, great social. This is without a doubt one of the most caring and helpful hostels I have stayed at in my life. The staff are absolutely amazing and nothing is too much. I had so much trouble with a parcel stuck in customs and they were available 24hrs a day without question. The hostel itself is an amazing space, perfect size and great facilities, they also appear to be cleaning constantly so everything is spotless! A/C is on whenever you want which is a saviour in Cartagena.

We booked 3 nights and wanted to cancel the last night (because our plans did change). The guy at the reception assured us that we will get our refund and it's "no problem at all to cancel". It's been one month now, still no refund and they don't even reply on my messages. Unprofessionell behavior!

Dont remember any worse hostel that I have stay my entire 20 years of traveling, I don't know how they got 4 starts, the common area is literally inside your room which ever room you stay, smell of smoke everywhere in the rooms cause of people smoking just next to your room which ever room stay. Enjoy sleepless night full of smoke and noise and thanks for worse experience in Cartagena 👎👎

  • 4/5 Julianna S. 1 year ago on Google
The rooms at this hostel are lovey. Nice big lockers and privacy curtains. The showers, bathrooms, and kitchen were clean. The outdoor common areas are beautiful and there is lots of seating. My only complaint is that smoking is permitted in both outdoor common areas. Since I do not smoke and do not want to breathe in secondhand smoke, I could not enjoy being outside and spent much of my free time in my room. A nice compromise could be allowing smoking in only one of the two outdoor common areas.

I had a great experience at this hostel. The staff clearly care about your experience and they were all very helpful when it came to suggestions on excursions and local places to visit. Major shout out to Steven who is responsible for the events! He is dedicated and has energy that will light the room.

I stayed at 4 different Viajero Hostels during my Colombia trip and this one was by far my favourite. The location was great and what I especially loved was the fact that you could actually sleep here. There are many Hostels that have music going on for half of the night but this one is quiet after 11pm. The staff also makes sure that there are people sitting around in front of rooms and being loud (had this at other Hostels and it's super annoying). If you want to party, you can still do it because the Hostel has many events and there are tons of Bars etc around. Random thing but I also loved how many bathrooms the Hostel had. Additionally to the big "group" toilet/showers there were multiple smaller bathrooms that also had a shower. The mattresses were also very comfortable. Would absolutely come here again.

Amazing stay! Excellent facilities and activities hosted by the hostel every night. Rooms and beds were clean and air conditioned, pool and and bar also very handy. Ask for Mango and Laura for any tips on travel and tours, food, night-life or any other concern you have, amazing people!

  • 4/5 Laura R. 2 years ago on Google
I only stayed one night, the breakfast could be better. It is near all the historical places in Cartagena and I could stay working all day after my check out. It is normal the appearance of the hostel considering it is located in the oldest part of Cartagena, if you want fancy and new facilities pay more and stay in a hotel.

  • 5/5 Anna-Lena R. 1 year ago on Google
Had a fantastic time here! Loved the pods in the dorms, the pool, the hammocks and the vibes! The staff, especially Mango and Laura, were super friendly and fun. Would have liked to stay longer :)

One of the most amazing hostels for meeting people while traveling solo. Perfect with a group of friends. Party hostel but at the same time no music is played after 12 AM which is perfect. Andres at the reception is kind and helpful throughout with lot of patience and wide smile to welcome everyone. I made so many friends in Viajero. 100% recommended.
