Went here after our tour got cancelled due to bad weather. Worked out about £15 each to get in and we spent a few hours here. The museum was quite good, although there was some repetition in the information given and there was no clear route to follow for the correct date order. This is something the museum could easily improve. But if you like your history and want something to do in Reykjavik then a visit here could be worth your while.

Wow, was this a great museum! We visited the National Museum of Iceland as our first stop of our City Pass. This was an extremely worthwhile visit for us. It started off with extremely helpful staff, walking us through the city pass & answering our questions about parking & getting around town. I would say 3 of the 5 stars are for these two staff alone, as they were extremely helpful and nice! The museum itself was spectacular. It was everything I wanted from a country's museum, from its settlement to modern history. It contained a bunch of excellent exhibits that I thoroughly enjoyed. One of the really cool details was how they determine aging, and how Iceland's unique geological history lends itself to discovering when events occurred. I probably said "woah, look at x" so many times my wife probably has nightmares about it days later. Great museum, as a part of the city pass, it's a must do.

A must see attraction in Reykjavik. The museum shows a rich history of the Iceland, from the Settlement until modern times, including different historical chapters with Denmark, UK, the history of the religion, the everyday life through different periods, trade, … The audio guide tour is really great to follow, definitely lots of amazing things to see.

A comprehensive and detailed overview of Iceland's history. Not as immersive as other museums nowadays, more the classical approach. Many very old and priceless exhibits. If there only had been more time...

I had a very interesting experience here. The lady on reception was lovely and talked me through all of the rules and what to expect in a simple way to understand. The museum takes you through Icelands history from ancient times up to modern times. The bit that stood out most to me, was the fully assembled skeletal remains of an ancient woman. I had never seen anything like that before.

Wonderful museum that was established 1863 and is a testimony to the history of Iceland. There are over 2000 items on exhibit depicting the migration, heritage, culture and history of Iceland from the Settlement Age through the present.

It is a great little museum (little being the reason of 4/5). Otherwise explanations are very concise and good, the visitors having a great time learning Icelandic history. A big plus for the taking care of little children, they have various activities for then not to get very bored, and also they really don't mind the little ones noise. We enjoyed a lot, and we think it is a must visit while a tourist in Iceland.

A superb museum of you want to discover the great and dynamic history of Iceland. There is also different exhibitions running at the same time that the permanent one, it’s full of simple and accurate explanations, few things for the kids as well. It is very impressive and you can see from close all the magnificent objects and artefacts that has been found out in the country. Count a decent two or more hours to have a great visit. There also audio guides, and the employees are very very kind. The museum is very well taken care, and designed. Check it for a visit ! ✅

The National Museum of Iceland is an exhibition divided into several periods with a large number of exhibits, presentation boards, models and an audiobook in several languages. For the price of 2,500 Icelandic crowns, we get full access to both floors where the tour takes place. We receive the password to the local Wi-Fi, enter the website by copying the QR code and enjoy full access to the materials prepared by the museum in the following languages: Polish, English, Chinese, German, French, Danish, Spanish, Swedish, Italian. I recommend taking headphones with you, but they are not necessary. There is one more option to choose from - English for children. I haven't listened to it, but I'm guessing there are special materials for younger visitors. I saw interactive rooms, coloring books, crosswords and places for children, so the museum is suitable for the whole family- children included. The history of the island is presented from the time of the first settlers to modern times. Due to its geographical location, it is not as rich in wars as the rest of Europe, so we can focus on aspects such as geology, faith, trade, social structures or the history of the Icelandic flag. There are over 100 different showcases with props, so there is really a lot to be interested in! The audiobook is prepared for about 2.5 hours. Let's add time to look for suitable positions, a few boards that were not included in the radio play - only in written form, a visit to the souvenir shop and we can safely count on a 3-4 hour visit to this place. If you had a day with bad weather and spoiled your holiday plans, this is the place you should visit :)

Great museum! Not to big and not too small. Easy to follow and there were some great artifacts followed by plenty of info to explain them. The coat room is very nice as well.

Very interesting exhibition about Icelands history, from the first settlers until today. Not too crowded. Don’t forget your headphones to listen to the audio guide, which is available in different languages.

Very interesting and informative, the layout is sometimes a tad confusing but the narrative is very compelling explaining Icelands history through the ages

Very good museum. Really enjoyed it. Small and easy to see everything. Very dark though. Bring your headphones as they have audio guides you can access via QR code on your phone. So many people had their phones up to their ear.

Good overview of the island. Exhibits are in English and well documented. Doesn't take too long to go through the entire museum and there's a nice gift shop with some unusual items.

Very interesting Museum where you can literally walk through the whole story of Iceland, from the old times to modern. Very pretty veranda for a coffee, and nice gift shop, with a wide selection of items, from small to more expensive.

A national treasure of historic treasures for Iceland. A good but not over the top amount of information for each set of exhibits. From later centuries there was in my opinion too many religious items.

A very thorough journey in Icelandic history, from the settlers to modern days. My only regret is that the (free) audio guide was not more complete, it seems that some tracks were not on the web site, even if references on the panels…

Lovely museum, a great mix of artifacts covering the history of Iceland. I really enjoyed their embroidery exhibit and activity. I would definitely recommend making time for a couple of hours here.

The museum is has three floors and a cafe. It took me around two hours to cover all the exhibits, which was fairly enjoyable. The museum is not too large, but it does a good job presenting its exhibits. The accompanying text had a good length, neither too long or short.

Really cool experience. We spent about 2 hours here. I came away with new insights about Iceland’s settlement and it’s history with other European nations throughout the years.

We spent a rain soaked, freezing and windy afternoon here. It was well worth the money, very interesting and educational. We spent four+ hours there and could easily have spent another couple of hours. We only left when we did because the museum was closing.

This a great exhibition on Icelandic culture from first settlement to the present. Fascinating creative displays all explained in Icelandic and English. Allow at least a couple of hours. Coffee shop is good too. There are tours in English. Check the website for times.

I attended the 45 min free tour and find it informative. Spent another 1 hour watching the short video clips and wandering. Bonus point they provide lockers in different sizes (see the biggest one in the photo). If you arrive very early in Iceland, consider visiting the museum to get a full picture of Iceland before starting your adventure!

I enjoy visiting museums in different countries. It was very interesting and informative. You can learn a lot about Icelandic history and lifestyle. You can take a picture with Iclandic outfits. There is area for the kids to play and get creative.

It Is very nice museum. Just two floors. You can learn a lot of about forming of Icelandish society (890Ad->present times). Not only history, but about fashion, food, economy And religion of Iceland. I reduce 1 star, because I feel like 17-19 century wasnt represented enought, like others

Does an excellent job of telling the layered histories of Iceland! Visit this museum before touring the country for a good rundown on the many sites you will see.

Reasonable admission price based on the quality and quantity of exhibits. The story takes you from the settling of the land to the modern day. Exhibits were well maintained and flowed easily. Gift shop was a bit expensive but a wide variety of items.
