If you want grocery level sushi for thrice the mark up, look no further. The manager would not even come to see us over this very disappointing dining experience . Started out the experience by waiting 45 minutes for our food to arrive. We ordered the Sushi Deluxe, Sashimi Deluxe, and the Sushi and Sashimi Deluxe along with two extra rolls: the Spicy Dragon and Shumi. The fish cuts were very apparently not fresh. The cuts were very small, especially considering the price. Also, the cuts all had holes in them, probably because they were cut so thin. The cuts were old too and did not taste fresh at all. You can't tell the difference between the tuna and toro either. The tempura in the spicy dragon was soggy and the eel was mushy and flavorless. When we contacted the staff and politely asked them to bring their chef to us so we could speak to him, they refused us and gave us a waitress pretending to be a manager. They ignored our complaints and I never once saw a staff member relay our complaints to the chef. A dish was taken back to be remade and after 40 minutes it never arrived. Overall a horrible experience. Not worth the money at all. Update: they explicitly told us that they’d remake the sushi and sashimi deluxe and 40 minutes later we were informed that they just took it off our check.

Absolutely spectacular sushi. The quality of fish was incredible. The variety was what you would expect from a top tier restaurant. Perfect sushi rice. While everything was incredible, the cones stood out to me…. Warm rice, cold fish, crisp nori….perfection. Not cheap. Worth every penny. If you’re into real sushi, this is where it’s at…. If you’re into the goopy saucy crunchy Americanized rolls where the fish is hidden… this isn’t the place for you. I highly recommend. Amazing.

Amazing first experience having omikasi! Service was impeccable and staff were very friendly. Make sure to make reservations at the bar so you can watch the chefs prepare the dishes. . My only gripe was that there were tablets blocking the view from some angles. The restaurant itself was consistently busy. The waiters described every dish that was brought over down to every detail. The fish was super fresh and paired very nicely with a certain sauce. Unfortunately, there were so many dishes, I could not remember all the names. Looking back at the pictures has me wanting to go back for more. You'll definitely leave on a full stomach and well worth the price. The restaurant itself is located in the very cute town of Ridgewood. So after you eat, you can walk around. Plenty of cute shops, cafes, and dessert places. We had no issues finding parking. Make sure to put your name down on the email list to receive a free omikasi on your birthday!

I have been an avid Sushi fan and lover for well over 30 years. I enjoy Sashimi the most although I know many steer away from it. But, to me this is the BEST place period when it comes to Sushi. I mean OMG the freshness of the fish is insane to the point the fish melts on your tongue. I mean WOW and the plates are so big you can barely eat it all. Bring friends, bring food wine and simply enjoy the BEST sushi you will EVER experience in Bergen County New Jersey. Be prepared for the service you have never had Herr as well ad ALL the employees treat you so nicely and even explain what you are eating. I have been here 5 times in 5 days so believe me this is the place. Well be back on Friday!

I haven’t had such great sushi for a long time! The fish was very fresh and anything we tried was awesome. Hats off to the kitchen team. The staff were very friendly. This place is BYOB.

Some of the best sushi I've ever had. My girlfriend and I got the omakase special and werr very impressed with the quality of the fish and the garnishes that paired well with each. It was plenty of food too, so definitely worth the money. The decor and vibe were fun, and the wait staff were all friendly and attentive, which helped further elevate the experience. Would definitely recommend

An amazing and delicious experience! I have been here multiple times and each time I cannot pass up the omakase. David, the chef and owner, takes time to really make you appreciate every part of the omakase experience. He is obviously passionate about his restaurant and craft and it is evident with every bite.

I visited for lunch on the recommendation of a friend, and after making a reservation, I was seated without waiting. service was very friendly. The fried oyster salad selected as an appetizer was very tasty, but the main menu was not as satisfying as I had expected.

Very tasty spot. Was sitting there for a while before my waiter came over but then I realized they do a lot of prep for each guest. I wasn't being ignored is what I'm getting at. Food was very fresh and well prepared. Staff was very kind and courteous. The rolls I had were excellent. Ridgewood roll especially. The chicken teriyaki box was outstanding. Ery eased with this place and I will be back.

Shumi is one of my favorite sushi places in NJ. I have been numerous times and have done both Omakase experiences + ordered other items off the menu. My brothers’ and their wives love it as well and frequently go! It’s a family favorite. Every time I have gone it was always filled with people. It created such an energetic vibe with the people including the music. Not overwhelming though, it’s the perfect amount to almost still feel intimate with whom your dining with. I’ve had a pleasure at trying both the sushi bar and regular tables - I personally prefer the bar if I’m doing Omakase. But if I’m ordering regularly from the menu, the tables are just perfect. The staff are always attentive and great. The quality of the fish is also incredible so I recommend trying Shumi if you haven’t been! Don’t ever try the Omakase here. I ordered the Omakase and this is the worst experience I’ve ever had. If the sushi come out with plates, it should not have been called as “Omakase”. The rice part is literally smaller than my finger… my friend ordered other rolls and the nori and rice are obviously not even attached tightly. To be fair, they taste okay. I do not know what else I can say except for Melani, the girl who served us is super nice and patient.

We came to Shumi for our annual anniversary omakase. To say that the food was out of this world is to say nothing. They started us with a soup with cooked tuna sushi roll. It was new to us and interesting. The bowl was bursting with umami. Chawanmushi — Japanese egg custard came next. Tender smooth and smoky it was hiding mushrooms and a fish cake. Then there was a sushi platter — different ways with tuna, salmon and yellowtail. Scallop and fish tempura arrived next. I didn’t catch the name of the fish mentioned by our server. Another sushi platter: tamago on one end and smoked eel on the other, with three rolls based on monkfish liver topped with octopus and tuna, wrapped in incredibly flavorful nori. The experience was rounded up with ramen that had a really nice corn flavor base. With all the amazing food here’s the thing though. We left the place with a strange feeling. It was not our first omakase experience. Maybe some experts can correct me and point were I am wrong. Severe expressions on chefs’ faces who were avoiding any eye contact — we sat at the bar — contributed some sort of tension. We were never asked about food allergies or aversions — we have none and are very adventurous but still, it's omakase. We did not see or got to talk to the chef preparing our food — explanations given by servers were not always clear. And the final straw was ramen placed in front of us with the words something to the extent of “this is your last one,” which with stern faces in the background sounded like “time for you to get out.” We have never heard this at omakase before. Dining at this level is no longer about food alone, it's about the whole experience. But staying positive, we laughed it off and focused on the memories of the most incredible food.

Wonderful experience, moderately priced and the atmosphere is lovely. We ordered 4 appetizers and two rolls for two people. It is BYOB. Appetizers are perfect portions. Service was attentive. Will definitely be back.

Food was great, had sushi sashimi combo. Good portion and great quality for the price. I like my sushi / rolls with minimal rice and it was perfect. Cons: parking in the area is a mission. But not to the restaurant's fault, music was too loud to talk with person across from me at a 2 person table, and service was good minus feeling rushed.

Omakase was decent, way to loud for it, you can barely hear your waiter. Train your staff better and tell them to relax a bit. Paint the walls in the place. Besides that, the quality of fish was decent the chef cutting it didn't do it justice. I wouldn't recommend it.

Amazing omakase sling with fresh sushi and rolls. The quality of the distress are great. I would recommend that anyone that's in the area or even wanted a great meal to come here. The omakase is deep with distress so bring an appetite.

Shumi is one of the best restaurants I have ever gone too. It's definitely worth the experience. I would definitely recommend getting one of their lunch/dinner boxes, you get so much delicious food for a great price. However, when we went this time, it was so busy that we ended up trying something new! Below I attached pictures of what my partner and I got for dinner. It really is our go to place. (From left to right: Tuna Tartar, Eel Unadon, Sushi and Sashimi Deluxe). The fish was fresh and everything was truly delicious. Make sure to reserve a table ahead of time, because Shumi gets extremely busy.

I moved from Ridgewood about eight years ago. I had some time today to enjoy lunch and decided to head back to Ridgewood and see what was new. Walking down Ridgewood Ave, I came across what to me was a new Japanese restaurant. Decided to check it out and what a great decision that turned out to be! I chose the three course lunch special. Every course exceeded my expectations, especially for a very reasonable price of $21 per person.

A truly amazing and memorable dining experience, and a welcome addition to our little town! I still cannot quite believe that the town of Leonia can now boast a world-class, first-rate sushi and omakase restaurant right on Broad Avenue! Executive Chef David Seo has followed up on the success of his Ridgewood restaurant of the same name with a Leonia location : a spacious, modern venue, a highly attentive wait staff, expert culinary crew, and fresh selections that never disappoint. Treat yourself or someone you love to an omakase (chef’s choice) sushi meal that you will not soon forget. The ingredients are extremely fresh, and the variety of fish is most impressive. I especially love the various tuna nigiri I have been served here. The combinations of fresh fish expertly sliced, soft rice, and unique sauces and toppings are all so tender that they literally melt in your mouth! But I would be remiss if I did not also sing the praises of the regular menu. I have tried nearly the entire menu and have never been disappointed. Some personal favorites are any of the poké appetizers, particularly the fatty tuna poké. I love all of the special rolls, particularly the Shumi and Leonia rolls. Although I have yet to experience it myself, they have lunch specials as well. This restaurant is truly a gem. FIVE STARS! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
