Had a highly unpleasant encounter with two extremely rude staff members. I don’t usually shop in H&M stores anymore for many reasons, but last weekend we needed a quick change of clothes for a prolonged visit in Roeselare. The two women were leaning on a clothes rack in the middle isle about 5 metres from the entrance. I walked in and proceeded immediately to the left to check some clothes on the wall about 5 meters away from them. Suddenly l heard snickering that grew into loud laughter behind my back. I thought something funny was happening on the street, so l turned to see what the commotion was. The oldest staff member then loudly exclaimed in Flemish dialect: “Oh no, l hadn’t even seen the front of it!” “IT.” I can assure you l looked nothing at all like Pennywise the Dancing Clown. Up until this point l had no idea they were talking about me. However, as l turned, they started stifling their laughter and kept throwing glances in my direction. I was wearing a silver coloured wig that day and maybe those two aren’t used to seeing a black woman channeling Ororo Monroe, but l found their reaction to be very unprofessional, childish and mean spirited. They might also not have known that l understood every word they were saying, which actually makes it worse. When l confronted them by telling them that if they really must make fun of customers, they should be more discreet, the older woman bluntly and hostilely interjected by stating “she had no idea what l was talking about”, then turned away and proceeded to address another customer. Her younger colleague starting snickering again. In my face. I feel bad for their other colleagues who might well be wonderful people. I’ve seen that the store’s reviews are mainly positive, but all of them are from non-Black people and some ppl l question whether they’ve actually physically BEEN to THIS particular store. If you’re Black, you might want to shop somewhere else in this town or go to a bigger city. That’s what we ended up doing. Even if this wasn’t about race, l don’t think bullying your customers is great store policy, so l’m good, thanks! Never shopping there again...👋🏾
