Campo
dei
Fiori
is
not
a
flower
market
that
many
tourists
assume.
Campo
dei
fiori
literally
translates
to
"field
of
flowers"
and
derives
it's
name
from
the
middle
ages
when
it
was
a
meadow
of
flowers
and
vegetable
gardens.
Now
it
is
the
site
of
a
farmers'
market
with
vendors
selling
fruits,
vegetables,
and
other
artisanal
food
products,
surrounded
by
cafe/bars,
restaurants
and
small
shops
and
bookstores.
The
farmers
will
often
allow
you
to
sample
what
you
are
buying,
and
sure
you
can
buy
fresh
produce
in
many
markets
around
Rome,
but
this
one
is
famous
probably
because
of
its
long
history
and
location
in
the
middle
of
the
Centro
Storico
district.
Go
any
day
of
the
week
if
you
want
to
avoid
the
crowds
on
the
weekends.
Note
that
most
of
the
vendors
close
up
shop
at
3pm.
