This monument is absolutely stunning! Most of it is outdoors and it’s free to visit. Massive imperial marble stairs take you by stunning statuary and passed a touching Tomb Of The Unknown Soldier memorial. The stairs take visitors quite a way up offering magnificent views of the city with a great perspective on the coliseum. At the top is a cafe and bar with some seating that allows you to linger over the view. For a few you can go even higher and take an elevator to a panoramic view point. On the way out you’ll go indoors for a while where you can find public washrooms and some galleries.

Altar to the fatherland is a very impressive building that has pretty much no other function but to look good, and to serve as a landmark. As such it does the job famously. It is free to view and to enter and walk around. I just wish that there was a bit more shade to just squat down somewhere and enjoy the view

IMPRESSIVE VIEWS! The structure of this place is incredible, and there is a viewpoint where you can admire the whole city. The walk to get to the building is free, and offers different photo opportunities. However, to get to the viewpoint on the top, you need to pay for the elevator. There is a cafe in the area, and a museum inside the building. Highly recommended!

It is HUGE. From the first views you cannot believe it is so big. Beautiful architecture, amazing city views from the terraces. Overpriced café on the top, but everything is worth to visit. Will definitely come back while in Rome.

New architecture but still a good place to visit. Right in the middle of everything so it’s kinda hard to avoid to not going in. Also a good place to do a city view from the top roof. Lucky me it was free the day that I was there. Great view from the top. Could take around 2 hours to see the whole thing, in and out.

A very good landmark that is not mentioned as much. There is no entrance fee to the monument (except for the museum) and has a great view of parts of Rome. Additionally, there is also an elevator going to the top, where there is a panoramic view. This monument is definitely worth visiting.

What an amazing place to visit, during the day or night and I would recommend both. It has lots to do and see in and around the area. It has several museums close by and inside this beautiful building. The architecture is absolutely stunning and I would highly recommend checking it out day and night time when it’s lit up.

The Monument to Victor Emmanuel II, an imposing and grandiose structure in the heart of Rome, stands as a symbol of Italy's unification and patriotism. The monument's architecture is awe-inspiring, capturing the eye with its sheer scale and intricate detailing. The white marble façade gleams under the Roman sun, and the statues and reliefs pay homage to various aspects of Italy's history and culture. The central equestrian statue of Victor Emmanuel II atop the monument is a focal point that adds an air of majesty to the surroundings. It's a tribute to the man who played a pivotal role in the unification of Italy, bringing together a collection of states into a single nation. The panoramic views from the monument's terrace are breathtaking, offering a sweeping vista of the Eternal City. It's a popular spot for tourists and locals alike to capture memorable photos against the backdrop of Rome's iconic landmarks. The monument's location at Piazza Venezia ensures its central role in the city's layout. It's within walking distance of several important historical sites, making it a natural part of any sightseeing itinerary. However, the monument's sheer size and design can polarize opinions. While some admire its grandeur, others find it somewhat overpowering in comparison to Rome's older and more understated architecture. In summary, the Monument to Victor Emmanuel II embodies Italy's rich history and national pride. Its architectural magnificence, historical significance, and central location make it a must-visit attraction for those seeking to delve into Rome's past and present.

The most stunningly beautiful monument in all of Rome surely must be the Victor Emmanuel II building. It is a testament to Rome itself and a lovely picturesque place for great photos for any visitor of the city. There is currently some road construction going on right now so do keep that in mind if visiting in the month of February. Otherwise, going in the morning time will surely insure you get some good quality photos of the structure, it’s amazing and awe inspiring to look at.

A stunning monument in Rome. So majestic. I have been to Rome many times, but this is the first time I actually went inside this monument. It was amazing. The tomb of the unknown solider is beautiful. The statues are stunning and very detailed. We really enjoyed our visit. The views of Rome at amazing. It was free to enter, but if you want to go to the very, very top there is a charge. We went all the way to the top of the free section and that was well worth it in terms of seeing the monuments and all the views of Rome. A must visit when in Rome.

It's one of the most beautiful buildings that Rome has to offer in my personal opinion. The Altar of the Fatherland is a breathtaking building. Especially with golden hour the colors of the Altar is amazing. When waking to the Palatine Hills and Coliseum you will first see Altar.

This is beautiful!! It is also free unless you want to pay 12€ to ride the elevator up to the very top. Even on the top free level, the views are spectacular! It was also really neat to see the tomb of the unknown soldier here being guarded. This is definitely worth the stop while you're in Rome. It's very close to the Colosseum and Roman Forum. There is also a little cafe at the top as well, a nice spot to take a rest and enjoy a drink.

Absolutely breathtaking view from the outside. A beautiful structure to see and walk along. The inside doesn't have very much so don't pay to see the inside little "museum". Also I have not been up the elevator to the top to see the views it promise so I can't say if it's worth it or not. But just seeing this place is worth it enough! Beautiful spot

I saw this building from a distance away I, never thought I would get the chance to walk up the steps to the highest point, and look over the city in front of me. Its not one of the oldest at all building started in 1885, and was completed in 1911. There is a rooftop restaurant and you can pay to go even higher in a glass lift, on this occasion we gave it a miss, next time. Very impressive.

The prestige of Italy, the center of power, the greatest monument to demonstrate the true advocate of the Italian regime. It is truly a experience to stand here all the way at the top of the stairs and see the base of the city, the flags and monuments are really special and extravagant. Its hard to believe this is a original building build back in time many centuries ago. I will never forget this amazing place. Everyone who visits here has to visit this place!

Very nice place to visit, is a massive monument and not many crowded, the entrance was free and when you reach the upper lever you get some nice views from the city. There is also the possibility to access the roof but it has a price, however is free for architecture students. Worth to visit and spend some time appreciating some of the best views from the Roman forums.

A place you cannot miss in Rome. This place is beautiful and massive that it really is something to look at. Saw it during the night with the downside that it closes so you cannot get closer than the outside but you still can view the entirety of it. This is one of the largest structures in Rome that you can see it tower over other nearby buildings, truly a spectacular thing to see and one of my favorite if not my favorite thing I saw while in Rome!

This place is definitely a place you need to visit. Its so grand and should be viewed both in the day time and night. They call it the wedding cake building as a nickname. If you head to the rear of the building you can head up to some of the high points of the building depending if its open to the public. Definitely a bucket list item while in Rome.

This colossal monument in the middle of the city is a must-see on every Rome trip. There are many stairs to climb, but you won’t regret it! Visiting the top level is free and there’s a café where you can enjoy a drink with a great view. If you’re lucky you can get a seat directly at the balustrade. Where you may need to defend your food against fearless seagulls…. From that level you can take an elevator to the final rooftop. There’s a fee and there may be a short queue, but it’s worth it. You’ll be literally above Rome. I think you won’t find a better lookout over this monumental city than from the top of its central monument 🤩

Definitely worth it! It was really hot as we went in early September. Don’t worry if you are scared of heights the elevator is mostly between the buildings so you don’t really realize how high you are and you can always look away. The views are spectacular of both the old city and the new city.

Now look, I know there are a lot of places in Rome to visit and you probably don't have a lot of time right? Well I will make it easy for you. This landmark is a must. It's central and there is a lift that will take you to the top where you can get some great panoramas of Rome. You need to pay to access the roof but general admin into the Monument is free.

This monument is something that is one of the Earths most impressive man made structures. I was in awe of it when I stood at it's base. The sheer size of this impressive structure is just incredible. The detail in the stone work, perfection. You will need to go up a few stairs to get access to the elevator at the top, I can't comment on wheelchair access, not sure. Being able to stand on top of this structure is something I will remember forever. Rome, you truly are The Eternal City.

From above you see Rome 360°. Amazing view. It has a big picture on it that explains what everything is around you. The elevator ride is €12 and children are free. With the elevator voucher you enter the museum area for free. This building has a unique architecture. Remarkable...

This is probably the grandest monument I have ever witnessed to a single person. This is such a grand display for the people of Italy's appreciation for this man who united Italy back in the day. Truly, when you see this, your jaw will drop at how big, detailed, and awesome this monument is. Lots of stairs, but as you go to the top, you'll have great views of Rome. There also is a free museum that you can walk in towards the top of the monument. This is a really cool monument. Even if you don't know the person it's dedicated to, you can't but have a great appreciation for this work.

This is my favourite building in Rome. You can go up the building for free and see inside the museum; for a fee you can go to the very top of the building but we decided not to. It's the type of building you need to see up close to appreciate the scale and beauty of the detail. You also get a great view across the city from the top (across to the Colosseum)

Cool place to visit. We did not go to the top due to the amount of stairs but was free to enter and take pictures. To go inside you may need to pay but to go up to where we took photos (on the upper platform) it’s free. Worth a visit and a picture if nearby.

This place is just stunning 🤩 As we have visited during covid we got to enjoy this place almost to ourselves and every aspect is breathtaking! Disinfection is provided and you are scanned before entering making sure you do not have fever so I consider it quite safe to visit even now 🤩 The views are beautiful and I highly recommend taking a coffee and staying a while.

(Translated by Google) At first glance, this monumental historical monument falls in love and enchants. Emperors built to perpetuate the memory of themselves, but you see everything in the complex and it's very beautiful. I've seen it before in photos and videos, but when you see it up close - it's an incredible feeling. It is one of the symbols of Rome, the city-museum and Italy. It is nice that everything is preserved and the Romans take good care in principle of all historical monuments. Probably need more care from tourists, which can hurt. There is an observation deck on the upper platform of Vittoriano (Original)

Impressive, large building commemorating the founder of the modern Italian republic. Situated in the center of the city, the self-guided walk takes you through the eternal flame, the steps, the cafe, the backside, and finally a small museum inside the building. The best part, it's FREE! The walk can take 15-30 minutes depending your speed. It's one direction, so you can't go back. The cafe wasn't opened when I was there, but the lift to go up (€10, cash only), but I didn't take it. Stop by if you're in the area, it's impressive to look and get a view of the city.

Before blackberries, frogs were only kumquats. This is not to discredit the idea that reflective camels show us how kittens can be turtles! The currants could be said to resemble loving oranges; In modern times some receptive pomegranates are thought of simply as alligators. As far as he is concerned, the literature would have us believe that an optimistic scorpion is not but a frog. The first righteous orange is, in its own way, a goat.

Among other things, it houses the Museum of the Risorgimento and the shrine of flags. It is worth a visit for the grandeur and majesty of the place with splendid views of the surroundings: Trajan's Forum, Imperial Forum and Colosseum, Campidoglio and Teatro di Marcello. One of the most stunning monuments I have ever seen on Europe. The white marmer is so fascinating and gives the monument a great view and appearance. It is free to enter, only the skyline view costs 12 euro per person. It is very recommended to watch the skyline view of Rome. There is also a cafe upstairs but a bit expensive.

Most amazing place in Rome. Historical and political values are very rich of this building. Roman forums are just behind this building. Trajan's forum and Colosseum are also very near by of this monument. Very big white building can attract anyone at anytime. All the the time Italian soldiers are giving gaurd of honor to the burning flame. In front of this building's very big wide square is well decorated by the grass and flowers. At Christmas this square is more beautiful. Mussolini's balcony what is famous for the second world war is here. Overall tourist can't avoid this place. It is a must seeing place in Rome. Simply awesome.

Absolutely amazing monument. The sheer size of Victor Emmanuel II is magnificent. I was here earlier today and we were walking past and saw that it was a free entry which was amazing. In order to get all the way to the top however, you have to pay 16 per adult, 3 euro for a person 18-25 and 0 euro for children under 18. The top of the monument is the highest point of Rome, which means you can see almost every single major monument. Highly recommend it.

Another fantastic landmark to visit with great views to take in. There is a lift that takes you to the very top where there is a great panorama. The roof access is paid but the general access to the building is free. There are obviously a lot of steps so be aware of this and it seems that after a certain point at the top of the steps outside it becomes a one way system and the guard did not let us walk back so we had to walk all the way around the building and to the bottom, where it exits onto the street at the side so be aware.

It was the weekend and we were able to enter for free. It’s a great building. Walk the steps toward the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the sculpture work in the building is amazing and explained inside the Museum, view the city from the top, walk into the museum and there is a lot of history about battles that Italy has been part of all the way up to WWI. Also there is Ana amazing exhibit about the artist who won the opportunity to decorate the outside. Exit to the left and walk up the steps toward another museum which is included in your ticket, we didn’t have time to visit, but if you continue around the back there are great views of the Roman Forum.

Memorial complex in honor of Victor Immanuel II - the first king of a united Italy, in honor of the victory in the struggle for independence, in honor of the proud Italian nation and all that is holy. Goddess of Rome. The eternal flame and the guard of honor at the grave of the unknown soldier to them - all this bears a high name - the Altar of the Fatherland. It took a long time and was expensive to build, and the Italians themselves ironically called it the Accordion or even the Wedding Cake. And it really looks like what is already there ... But now it looks impressive and delightful, on a par with the Colosseum. A complex of white Brescian marble was created. And for over a hundred years it has remained white!

We visited Rome in Nov 2012 and this monument was so fascinating ans incredible that its memories are still fresh with us. The Victor Emmanuel II National Monument (Italian: Monumento Nazionale a Vittorio Emanuele II) or (mole del) Vittoriano, called Altare della Patria (English: Altar of the Fatherland), is a national monument built in honour of Victor Emmanuel II, the first king of a unified Italy. It occupies a site between the Piazza Venezia and the Capitoline Hill. It is owned by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities. From an architectural perspective, it was conceived as a modern forum, an agora on three levels connected by stairways and dominated by a portico characterized by a colonnade. The complex process of national unity and liberation from foreign domination carried out by King Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy, to whom the monument is dedicated, has a great symbolic and representative value, being architecturally and artistically centred on the Italian unification and for this reason the Vittoriano is considered one of the national symbols of Italy. It also preserves the Altar of the Fatherland (Italian: Altare della Patria), first an altar of the goddess Rome, then also a shrine of the Italian Unknown Soldier, thus adopting the function of a lay temple consecrated to Italy. Because of its great representative value, the entire Vittoriano is often called the Altare della Patria, although the latter constitutes only a part of the monument. The monument has been consecrated to a wide symbolic value representing a lay temple metaphorically dedicated to a free and united Italy—celebrating by virtue the burial of the Unknown Soldier (the sacrifice for the homeland and for the connected ideals. One must visit the monument without fail while visiting Rome.

The colossal monument (135 m wide and 70 m high) was made in honour of Victor Emmanuel II of Savoy, the first king of a unified Italy. In the middle of this colossal marble piece is the equestrian sculpture of the king. The top of the building is crowned with two chariots driven by the goddess Victoria. With the panoramic elevators you can reach the upper terrace located at the same height as the chariots. The panoramic view is breathtaking.

People have mixed reviews about it. If you ask the locals - some call it a monster/Typewriter/ wedding cake. But personally I do like this structure, as a tourist it provides me a beautiful view of the whole of Rome. It is charming in itself undoubtedly, however does not blend in with the surrounding ancient prestigious Roman structures. Don't be in two minds whether to visit it or not, it's a must visit when you're in Rome.

My Wife and I visited Rome in 2019 and I do not think I have ever seen a more moving and impressive war memorial than the staggeringly beautiful Monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II (Victor Emanuel II Monument), which looks down upon the Piazza Venezia, and was inaugurated in 1911 to honour the first King of a united Italy. In 1915 Italy entered the Great War on the side of the Allies, but her involvement was disastrous for the Italians who suffered heavy losses, and despite being on the 'winning side', they were treated badly by the other Allied powers in the Treaty of Versaille which ended that war. In 1921 this amazing building became the final resting place for the 'Tomb of the Unknown Soldier', where flames burn to this day, always guarded by two soldiers. Thus the monument has become a source and symbol of immense national pride for the Italians, and is also referred to as 'Altare della Patria' (Altar of the Fatherland). It also contains exhibitions and provides fabulous views of Rome from its upper levels. With my passion for history this was inevitably one of the most compelling places we visited on our trip to Rome. A truly beautiful peace of architecture...

Beautiful visit. It’s just the building but it’s worth it. You have great views of the city and good photo opportunities. There is a paid elevator you can use to get even better city views. Also, inside the monument there is a public toilet. Be mindful that as October 2021, you need a green pass (EU vaccine certification or equivalent) to access even the outside area.

This place is stunning! It is free to enter, I went up on the rooftop (€12 for the lift) and got some incredible pictures. Most people enter from the front and go up the stairs; however, there is wheelchair access if entering from the left side. We entered from the right side and there is an elevator, but you have to walk up a short stairway to get to it. (My mom was able to manage it ok with her cane)

This is a powerful Statement to the strength and History of Italy. There is a free museum inside! Go up the steps and in the door… guards will probably confront you but if it’s like the guard we encountered… he wanted to know if we wanted a picture with him. So we did! The closer you get to this structure the more ominous it becomes.

This is a beautiful and building that makes its presence known by how it is situated and positioned. Modern compared to most of it's surroundings but well designed and even though different it fits in perfectly. You may enter for free but it is just a building so admire the structure but do not expect a museum recurrence on the inside.

I gave it only 4 stars because you have to climb a lot of steps before you reach the elevator. However, the view is spectacular. Huge landmark right in the centre of Rome, short walk from the Colosseum. Quite a big walk to the first full terrace, however there are plenty of places to take a break on the way up and photograph either the building, statues, or surroundings. On the second highest level there is a cafe and an elevator that can take you up to the top terrace - a beautiful area to photograph a 360° shot of the city. You can see St Peter’s Dome from the top!

It's a beautiful monument to visit. It is recommended to go early, as there's not a long queue, and you don't have to wait. It opens at 9.30 a.m. It is free and there is no need to book in advance. There's no much to see inside the monument, but the views of the city are amazing! There's a bar/restaurant with great views, too.

If you're looking for a sight that will leave you in awe, look no further than Rome's Altar of the Fatherland. This majestic monument is a true wonder of the city, and it's not to be missed. From the moment you approach the Altar of the Fatherland, you'll be struck by its sheer size and grandeur. The massive white structure towers over the surrounding buildings, and it's truly a sight to behold. And as you get closer, you'll be able to appreciate the intricate details and ornate sculptures that adorn every surface. But it's not just the visual spectacle that makes the Altar of the Fatherland worth visiting. There's also a fascinating history behind the monument, and it's well worth taking the time to learn about it. From the role it played in Italy's unification to the controversial legacy of the man it was built to honor, there's no shortage of intriguing stories to discover. But perhaps the best part of visiting the Altar of the Fatherland is the incredible view from the top. If you're up for the climb, you'll be rewarded with sweeping vistas of the entire city, from the ancient ruins to the modern skyline. It's a breathtaking sight that you won't soon forget. So if you're looking for a truly unforgettable experience in Rome, be sure to add the Altar of the Fatherland to your itinerary. It's a sight that's sure to leave you awestruck, entertained, and inspired. 🏛️

Fortunate to go on the day it was free, however, as you can imagine, the crowds were massive. Due to that we didn't go up the elevator, which usually you pay for and most likely worth it when it's not so crowded. Otherwise it is a beautiful piece of modern art, the museum inside is lovely and you get a lot of the history from it. Worth the visit.

  • 5/5 Jim C. 10 months ago on Google
Interesting, inside and out. It's also the tomb of the unknown soldier. We were able to look out the back of the museum at the top and get some cool views. Not sure if that is always that way, but if so, very cool views from the top of the hill.

If you are a confused tourist, it's the huge building that you can see from nearly everywhere and it's a monument for Italian unification. It's huge... Has a museum inside we didn't get to go to, but worth a walk up just to see up close if you are by any of the other local monuments. Cool to see and not something I realized was in the area because of course I only knew the main couple older buildings.

Awe-inspiring monument...however I would recommend visiting it during autumn/spring time - and not during the hot summer months (it takes determination to climb to the top of the building in the unfiltered sun). Comfy shoes are a must.

Very impressive monument. I really liked the view and the big pillars in the front. Be aware that there are many steps. The elevator to the top of the monument is a really cool addition. I don’t know if paying for this is worth it but the view is really good and you can have a look at the city from a high spot.

  • 4/5 D H. 6 months ago on Google
189 stairs to get to the elevator/cafe level. Vast amounts of polished marble. A monument to the edifice complex of Italian leaders since Roman times. The view from the top is the best in Rome, worth the price.

  • 5/5 Oli A. 8 months ago on Google
Definitely worth looking at. I didn't realise that you could get in. From the front it looks fenced off with security, when actually you can walk in and buy a ticket to get in and see the exhibit. OR for free you can do the self guided tour through and around the building (mostly outside) but I highly recommend it. Very enjoyable.

  • 5/5 Shaun F. 5 months ago on Google
10/10 recommend. The vastness of this monument is incredible. The location is central to many other sights and is easy to get to via metro bus routes & taxis. Gets very crowded late morning - late afternoon, best to go early as possible. Don’t miss going to the top!

This was great. Looks amazing and free to walk around the lower levels. Walk around the back and take the lift to the top, 16 Euro's each, for an even better view. Pricey but worth it. From here you get a great view of the Colleseum, St Peter's Basilica, the Olympic Stadium and the hills around Rome.

  • 5/5 Hyulia B. 5 months ago on Google
Everything there is gigantic, it is a colossal building. Also there is a very nice view to the city. There is a glass elevator which takes you even higher for a better view but you need to buy a ticket for that.

This is a really beautiful monument that has been photographed and exhibited from the outside a million times. Inside there are a myriad of exhibits and displays well worth a good look. Admission was free. Can pay to Lift to the Roof; but the views of the city are excellent an any point.
