The beautiful new George, just as beautiful as before. A more intimate bar but perfectly decorated, stunning copper bar. Excellent outdoor seating area, far larger than before. Service impeccable, superb drinks selection and obviously the location couldn't be better. Loyalty card for locals. Fab fab fab.

I’ve been coming to The George Grill for years (obviously with a hiatus due to the fire). Half of my family are from Rye, and I’ve been shouting loud and proud about The George Grill for years. I’ve always loved it. However: I came in tonight and something has really changed. Although the food was almost as good as it used to be, the waiter seemed disinterested (four attempts to get water, despite ordering wine, so wasn’t just ordering for some cost-cutting effort). Lamb was served without appropriate knife, but I can live with that. The real issue was what I was told at the end. I asked for the bill and didn’t notice the gratuity was included. When I asked to add a gratuity, rather than point me to the fact it was already on there, I was bluntly told that the staff don’t receive them (which may explain a lot about the morale). This is so sad. I really want the management to corroborate this, as I want to write-off the miserable waiter experience as a one-off, come back and recommend as I used to. However: I cannot continue to support a business that does not fairly distribute service to the front-of-house staff. No matter how tight margins are, this is a total recipe for disaster in the medium to long term. Advice: Please sort this out before it sorts itself out via atmosphere and footfall. Based on these reviews, I’m not the first person to notice and it’s going to backfire.

A recent fire has meant this place has had a full overhaul. A stunning old building which leads into a swanky restaurant at the rear with a bar area for bar snacks if that’s more your thing. Staff are very attentive, even down to dinning the lights as they were shinning off the table. Food menu is good ranging for food that I’d say was reasonably priced to a top end steak for near £100 if that’s your thing. Quick service, food piping hot and full of flavour. Suitable for a posh night out or a quick stop off.

It’s great to see the new refurbishment and the dining area was tastefully decorated. The restaurant was busy and there was lots of colleagues on hand. Overall the food was good it arrived promptly. There was a wedding on that night and the thumping music sadly fed through to the restaurant making it not the best experience. The colleagues are all lovely but i feel they need a bit more organising as things were missed and had to be repeated/reordered. I would defiantly return but would check if they had any functions on that evening, just to make the experience better.

Great rooms, great hotel. Perfect for a long weekend in Rye. They could improve the coffee in the morning, it is slow and their machine is frustrating for customers and staff alike. I do like a coffee before 8am, but that was not possible. I will be satisfied with filter coffee before breakfast opens and can sit and read. In the late afternoons, the bar was slow, and we struggled to get served. The bar is not very well staffed, but there seemed to be a lot of staff in dinning room not doing much. The service could improve in that 3pm - 7pm to enable people to enjoy that lovely garden. The garden tables were filthy, glasses everywhere, and again, waitresses standing around not helping the bar or cleaning up the garden glasses. Great place and set up, the service just needs a little tweaking to make it really superb.

Good location. Only minutes away from Rye train station and the bus station towards camber sands and Dover. Loads of cute shops and restaurants right next to the hotel. Cute room with British decor. Very cosy especially with the yellow lights on in the quiet evening. The room is facing a smaller street. I’m a light sleeper but Rye isn’t partially busy at night so I had a good night sleep. We booked a small room. A bath tub in the bath room is a pleasant surprise. Room was clean. Staff were friendly. We had breakfast in the hotel restaurant. Very friendly staff! Had a main dish that you can choose from the menu. Unlimited juices, bread, pastries and coffee from the bar. We had the English breakfast and avocado and boiled egg on toast. Both very good! With the bread and drinks, we were so satisfied we didn’t even have lunch. Such a great start of our morning. Overall, very happy with our stay.

We had a great dinner at The George. Even though we did not book, the staff was very accommodating. The food was excellent and service by Mathew was exceptional. Will strongly recommend it.

I came here yesterday for lunch the menu looked lovely as did the restaurant once we got inside it was very busy so we waited for sometime we then got to our table staff were very friendly I ordered the half lobster chips and a small salad came with it, there was hardly any fish in my lobster for £39 was very disappointed, my son ordered fish and chips from the child's menu and was nearly sick eating it was undercooked. Wouldn't go again to pricey for the quality of food honestly ridiculous.

I have only good things to say about The George after our visit in December 2023. Food excellent (my rib eye steak was fabulous) and our room was beautifully appointed, with thick, warm, soft towels, a mountain of feather pillows and high quality soaps, shampoos etc. Also to note, the room was spotlessly clean. I didn't get the name of our Spanish waiter, but he could not have been more hospitable and made dinner a real pleasure. We will certainly be back - thank you.

AVOID!!!! We popped in here for lunch as it looked nice outside. The “host” told us they were fully booked with no tables available & tried to usher us out. We ended up at a table in the bar area. Felt very unwelcome & like an inconvenience. Food was very poor, small portions & overpriced. Staff were unhelpful. We will never return. Save your money people, go elsewhere!

We met some old friends at 4.30 for a drink and something to eat. The very unconfdent guy behind the bar told is the kitchen was closed for an hour or more as the staff were on a break! Waited a long time for the customer in front of us to receive his two drinks. Guy behind the bar kept wandering off. What we thought was the young Spanish manager asked us how we were doing and we told him we Crete hungry hex said he could find some crisps and olives. After about 30 minutes and looking at a long queue for the bar and the one guy serving still two tiny bowls of crisps turned up. Olives didn’t appear. The whole atmosphere was disorganisation and no one actually understanding what to do Lovely building. Never ever again thank you

Since my original review, I've reduced the overall rating to three stars from four. I can't comment on the rooms as I've not stayed there, however, there have been changes in management and internal arrangements as there was a major fire which gutted a large part of the hotel, and it's been rebuilt. Been there twice since the re-opening and have to say not overly impressed. First was an afternoon tea birthday treat for my elderly mother. The side entrance which is more or less stepless was locked, although we were told it would be open. Secondly, we had reserved a table in the lounge/snug for the tea. On arrival, we were told that this couldn't be reserved! In fairness, the manager did hold a table for us there, when someone vacated it, but only after our complaining re it. Also, had dinner there to give a second chance. Again, not overly impressed.

Went for dinner last night with a group of our friends, they travelled far and wide, what a real shame. Only one fire lit, ice cold draft through lobby because the main door is left open all the time, took over 20 mins just to get the first drink at the bar. Not a great start. The table service for dinner was sadly very slow from taking the first order to then taking over 30 mins each time we ordered just a drink. Excuse was there was a new cocktail menu and that had created a back log. In fairness, all the staff were polite but clearly some lacked experience. When the food arrived it was on point and your kitchen team deserves some credit, top job. To top the evening off we retired back to the bar, last orders were called, then the bar staff fled before anyone could order a drink… so we left to go somewhere else. Even brought it to the bar tenders attention who called last orders, as he was in the lobby when we left. But nothing, crickets! The bathrooms had no hand towels or soap and twice we reported it. It wasn’t until over an hr later that was fixed. Just unacceptable, it’s unsanitary. We are longstanding fans of the place and frequently use it and have stay many times. We were utterly embarrassed and when your friends keep saying, service is dreadful here.. you want the ground to swallow you up. Come on team, you HAVE to do better. Duty manager nowhere to be seen. Restaurant manager tried his best, and did identify and own the issues and offered a small discount, which wasn’t the point, but it all he could do I guess. Will we be back? right now probably not sure. Left a bad taste to be honest. When places like Boys Hall set the bar so high, you have work to do for sure. Hope you improve things, you have all right components but just that last 10% of the details and service kills it.

👍 A beautiful wetherspoons. Art deco interior. Beautiful colours. The kitchen is on show no hiding from customers. Lovely open doors. Fantastic. Disabled toilet let it down. Smelly and unclean. Lost a star for this reason.

👍 A well established cafe that's very popular with all sorts, but especially bikers. Very reasonable prices, not quite full restaurant range, but does have great food offerings, including great breakfasts. Good-sized outdoor area, small 'restaurant' area and ample 'cafe' area.
