A first-class National Trust property. Very well managed. The cafe has the usual Mational Trust good fare. Baked potatoes are a specialty. In the summer, there are lots of wasps, so best sit inside. The house is stunning inside. There was a very knowledgeable Dutch docent who will add quite a few interesting stories about Rudyard Kipling and the house. The gardens are attractive. The whole place can be visited in 60 to 90 minutes. There is a charge for parking foe non NT members. Advertised are four walks in the woods and fields around the estate. I would not recommend them as they are poorly signposted, not well maintained (brambles and nettles), and usually very muddy. To be recommended is the old mill, which is authentic. Unfortunately, this one is non working. However, it is well restored. The staff obviously care a lot about the house and gardens, and you get that feeling a lot.

I took my 2 sons (9 and 3) for the Jungle Book trail. They absolutely loved the whole experience but moreso looking around the historic building. My 3 year old loved looking around and when I asked what his favourite thing was about it, he said 'the big room'! The trail was also very good. We are not members of National Trust anymore so it was a little expensive but it was a great few hours out and they got plenty of fresh air.

A lovely house with a lived in feel. You can really imagine the Kipling family here. Lovely grounds too. Difficult to get to on the day we visited due to closed roads, but very glad we found a way.

Very interesting place to visit. Wasn’t really a fan of Kipling prior to the visit, but we enjoyed our time there immensely and learnt about Kipling. One of the exhibits reads an extract from one of his books and was very enjoyable. Lots of volunteers in the house and around the grounds. They have a wealth of information about his life to share. There are also 3 walks marked out and attractive well maintained gardens to enjoy.

Beautiful 17th century house and 13th century watermill. Visited on a cold rainy day but still enjoyed it. All original items, so it feels as if the family have just popped out. Beautiful embroidery and incredible painted leather panelling. Kipling's study is just as he left it, examples of his letters, writings and copy of Jungle Book with original illustrations on view. Very welcoming and knowledgeable guides. Great day out!

Beautiful National Trust property which I have visited a few times. The staff are knowledgeable about the house and the garden is truly a riot of colour. A lot of Dahlias. Lovely vegetable garden and some great artefacts. One drawback was the wasps in the cafe garden which could probably be combatted with some traps which they didn’t seem to have. In addition to that is my regular NT bugbear which are the absolutely outrageous prices in the cafe which one would have to take out a mortgage on their home to cover.

Very interesting history about Rudyard Kipling and staff are hugely knowledgeable and happy to answer questions. The gardens are gorgeous and the little cafe cakes and scones were proper fresh.
