Cool site. If you've been to Yellowstone and seen the geothermal parts of the park and liked it, come here! Photos don't do the park justice, so I've attached some terrible videos to give some insight into what you can see here. Parts of the park have a hydrogen sulfide smell but that's expected around geothermal springs. Really unique area, just be sure to stay on the path! You don't want to join the Maori warriors who were buried here. 🙂

This place was really cool and we spent about 3-4 hours and saw everything. There is a good amount of walking, but mostly flat with some stairs. The geyser only erupts once daily around 10-1015 am so make sure you’re there in time to get your ticket and drive back about 2-3 minutes to the geyser as it is outside the main park entrance. There are also some mud pools outside of the main park that are free to view.

Main park is amazing and worth it. Mud pools are free but paid for Lady Knox Geyser erupting at 10:15 daily (they put soap inside it for stimulus). Whole main park walk takes about 90mins average. Very stunning and informative. After the initial morning rush the park isn’t too busy so it’s nice. Bring your own lunch however as the cafe is lacking stock and options and is pricey, gift shop could be better too. Overall fantastic.

One of the 20 Most Surreal Places in the World. Visitors can choose one or all of three walks which take between 45 and 90 minutes. It was a fantastic experience walking around the volcanic city -Rotoroa, New Zealand. Got a chance to enjoy the unique features include the world famous Champagne Pool naturally coloured springs, bubbling mud, steaming ground, expansive vistas, huge volcanic craters and sinter terrace formations. But this wonderland is currently closed. There is an entrance fee to get in this place around NZ$ 30.00+ for adults.

Great walk through a thermal landscape with various features such as mud pools, acid lakes, terraces and steam vents. The walk itself is pleasant, you can go at your own pace, and there are plenty of view points. It does get pretty hot when the sun is out, and there is not a whole lot of shade so wear sunscreen !

It is truly a wonder land. I found it much more interesting and diverse than rotorua Geyser. A place where you can find the amazing outcome of play by wind, water, and mineral temperatures combine with mother nature. I place for 🎨, Explorer, scientists, and photographers. It will not let you down. Just a reminder last entry is till 3:30 PM in summer.

We loved our visit here. There were quite a lot tourists when we arrived at 10am, and we missed the geyser but the rest of the park was interesting. Be prepared to be greeted by the smell of sulphur for the whole walk. We spent roughly 2 hours doing all three walks and it was educational and enjoyable. Lots of see and explore.

I enjoyed my walk around the park. There are areas where I feel the park need to remove or maintain some of the vegetation better so you can view the actual sites to be seen, but it is also the cheapest geo thermal location you can visit. Got some good photos.

The lady geyser event is a little overhyped IMO and the sights to see are fascinating but slightly underwhelming. To be clear, the natural geothermal environment is still definitely something worth seeing in and of itself. All of the above is opinionated relative to the entry fee of $45. It's much too high for the experience and if it was closer to the $25-30 I could have bumped this up to a 4 star review. And yes, an unfortunate side effect of the geothermal environment is the sulphur smell. If you're sensitive to smell then have a good think about whether you can endure it. The good thing is they offer 3 different distances for the walk meaning you can exit soon if you can't handle the smell (though I believe it's $45 no matter which one you take - wish it was cheaper as you see much less on the shorter walks)

Famous attraction to the travelers are geothermal geysers in New Zealand. Wai-o-Tapu is close to Rotorua and a natural wonder. The magnificent Champagne Pool, the Devil’s Bath and the huge bubbling mud pools are sights to see which are out of this world. Do not miss the Lady Knox geyser eruption at 10.15am every morning. There are free natural springs outside the park too to take a dip. Don't forget to carry your bathing suit

Literally the best day ever!!!!!! This was so cool, if you love natural places and wonders - please visit here. You can go and see the lady knox geyser erupt every day at 10:15am but it is an artificial eruption done with soap. But this place is amazing, the green lake walk out is so worth walking out to. Unfortunately a little part of the track was cut off unfortunately but we could still see the lake and waterfall, if your strapped for time just go and see the waterfall, not the vista because the waterfall is better. The champagne lake was beautiful, best get there in the morning early to ensure less people. Its orange crust is pretty much the entire way around it, so good oportunities for good photos. The track on 3 is the most difficult and walking boots are recommended. The cafe is pretty decent also and you can purchase mud products at the shop which i did.

A wonderful world of varied Geothermal activity of various kinds in one single enclosure. From steaming vents, mud pools, green and yellow lakes it's all here. This also has the multi coloured Champagne Pool and the famous Lady Knox Geyser. Be aware, the Lady Knox Geyser erupts once a day only and they induce it to happen at 10:15am. So be sure to get to the park early to be in time to purchase the tickets and drive up to the parking spot to be able to view the eruption. You have to deal with the suphurous smell. But that is also true of rest of Rotorua as well

Cool spot to drop into to check out some geothermal activity. We went on a rainy/cloudy day so the colours were a little subdued but still pretty neat to behold! My only real criticism is that the only option for an entry includes a presentation of the Lady Knox geyser (which is located away from the Thermal Park) as well entry to the Thermal Park. However, the geyser only goes off at 10:15am and therefore isn't really worth checking out after this time as there isn't all that much to see. My partner and I only got to Waiotapu at 10:45am. It would be good to have a slightly cheaper entry ticket if one arrives later giving access to just the Thermal Park.

What a sight and great staff. We arrived just minutes before the eruption but with the guidance of the friendly staff we were able to get there in time. Then we did the walk around the thermal wonderland. There was a smell but that was to be expected. The paths were wide enough and in good repair. I appreciated the signs giving additional information. There are restrooms, a cafe and a gift shop.

Great place to view active craters, Champagne Pool and Artist's Palette with its beautiful colours. There are 3 different walking tracks with the 3rd one being longest requiring a bit more fitness with climbing up & down stairs. Some of the areas had dried up a bit but it's still an interesting explore. Great lookout points and the paths are in good condition with clear directions.

What a place to be where we are so close to a furious side of mother nature. Beautiful place and well managed. Easy walk and can also take pram on walk one as no step climb however cannot on walk 2 and 3. Lady Knox geysers was a a beautify site . And do not forgot the mud pool which are a short drive from the main reception.

You won't be disappointed with Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland! As someone who hasn't been to Yellowstone Park, I was amazed by what I saw here. It's a must-visit for nature and spa enthusiasts - just kidding - you can't actually soak in the water due to the very hot water. The park is much bigger than we anticipated, with three different trails to explore. If you want to see everything, make sure to allocate at least 3 hours of your time. You'll be snapping pictures non-stop because the scenery is simply breathtaking. Don't worry if you have mobility challenges or a stroller; you can take your time on the red route, which covers the best highlights of the park. Trust me, it's an experience you won't want to miss!

I really enjoyed this tour. There is so much to see while there. This is such an unusual place. The colours are amazing! A great way to spend an afternoon.

Impressive nature. Even though it was officially wheel hair accessibel. But it is not; not one of the tracks. They will tell you they are but they’re not. The hills are steep. And there are some small boards over creeks which are too narrow for stollers and wheelchairs. It isn’t accessibel to strollers either. And as it is warm weather, make sure you have at least 1l of water p person with you. There is no tap on the route. Also use the toilet at the info point.

I think this is a must see if you are into geothermal activity. The colours and steaming lakes and also the mud pool are awesome. We skipped the geyser in the morning and rather enjoyed the nearly empty site.

If you are into geo thermal springs and gasses coming out of the ground this is the place for you. I would not say this place is "Beautiful" but it definitely gives an alien world vibe. You can walk 100 meters and the entire scenery changes around you. We though there would be a strong sulfur smell to the entire place but it was only in certain locations and somewhat mild. As a bonus we got to see Shaggy and Velma in the Mystery machine!

The ticket is a bit expensive but it’s awesome to experience the sulphur lakes and geysers. There’s a lot to see and you won’t find anything else like it in NZ

Our fault: we went on a blustery rainy day and paid for the entire 'tour'/walk' but didn't get a chance to experience anything at all. We had to turn back 10min into the walk! Oh well, I guess you can't do much about that! But nevertheless, nice place.

  • 5/5 Michelle W. 4 years ago on Google
The place was great to get an idea of all the thermal activity. It has a great variety of things to see so if it’s the only place you’ll get to to witness this nature, you won’t be disappointed. Kids were 2 and 5 at the times. They did get bored but they soldiered on! It is hard for them to understand the science behind it all and to them it was just more scenery, but as adults we appreciated and enjoyed the visit.

Champagne pool is beautiful and it's got heaps of warm steam. Lovely walkways, but it's too hot on a sunny day in summer with only few shelters and shades. There's a souvenir shop and a Cafe with vending machines at the entrance. Fast entry on Monday, plenty of carpark outside, and not crowded inside.

One of the best Geo Thermal Parks in NZ. So many interesting pools and rock formations. The trails are good and the surrounding views are fabulous. Lots of good information along the track that explains the formations and mineral composition. Reasonably priced outing and a must see when in the area.

Nature at its best! There are not many places where one can get so close to active geysers and geothermal activity. We visited Waiotapu after 2004, and our experience was as wonderful now as back then. Everything is well laid out and signposted. The car park appears full but everyone can explore the attraction at their own pace. A special mention: the internet was down when we reached - group of 10 adults. The friendly staff stamped our hands and said, “enjoy the attraction; pay when you get back to town and have internet connection!” Highly recommended.

Must visit! It's a very unique landscape and the walks around the park are worth the time and present different geothermal pools and views. There are three different walks with increasing duration, but all are easy enough.

Arrived just after the geyser so missed out on that. The entrance is clean and the staff friendly. Great gift shop and the restaurant looks good. The walks were good but some of the wooden steps are a bit soft and damaged underfoot. Was a very wet day but loved the walks around the thermals. Very interesting and lots of boards with information. A must to do if you are in the area.

Wonderful place to visit where you can see and feel various natural phenomena created by the geothermal activity. Bubbling mud, hot water pools with varying colours and odors, terraces formed by rock fragments carried to surface by the hot water springs. The bursting gyzer is another interesting experience.

  • 5/5 Michael E. 6 months ago on Google
Incredible place to explore, lots of walking but worth it! Very scenic, there are some incredible water colours. One third is pram/wheelchair friendly, the other two thirds have lots of stairs. Take food with you and make sure you use the toilets as you enter!

New Zealand vacation day 4 - visited one of New Zealands most popular geothermal site. Place is huge and very impressive. Gives everyone a better appreciation of our planet and how active an area New Zealand is. The sites should offset the smell...by a bit! Their gift store has some nice items as well. Definitely a stop everyone should go to when visiting New Zealand!

  • 5/5 Eleven R. 11 months ago on Google
Must see! This area is very nicely laid out to get you up close to the thermal activity. Allow 2 hours to walk all three tracks. Each one is more interesting than the next. A bit of the walking can be strenuous, but just go slow and take your time. It's worth it! The tracks are all clearly marked and the walking route through the park is easy to follow. An amazing place! Some of my favorite photos from our trip were taken here.

  • 4/5 Kelsey M. 4 months ago on Google
What an incredible natural phenomenon experience that is a must see! The only reason I took one star off is the SMELL oh my word! I am also very sensitive to smells as are my kids so we kept our faces in our shirts the whole time but we did 100% love the trails and views!

  • 5/5 Martin H. 5 months ago on Google
It was extremly interesting and beautiful. One of the two best things I have seen during my 10 days visit. Definitely recommend! Besides the champagne pool i really liked the green and green-yellowish (my favourite) lakes.

  • 5/5 Priyanka P. 4 months ago on Google
This place was really cool and we spent about 3-4 hours and saw everything. There is a good amount of walking, but mostly flat with some stairs. Nice and clean place each and every volcano you can see closely ♥️🥰
