Had a great experience at J. Selby's! I took my dad who is not vegan and he was shocked at how spot on the flavors of everything were. He was super impressed with the crispy chicken sandwich and how the crunch and the juiciness of it was just like chicken. We also got the dirty secret which was amazing as well. It reminded us of a big mac but with a whopper patty. Their tots were also perfectly seasoned! We tried the tots as chili cheese tots. Great vegan fast food and very clean seating area. Recently tried two of the specials, the steak sandwich and the Nashville hot chicken, both were delicious. Honestly the Nashville hot chicken was the best I've ever had and it's not even chicken which really says something. The pickles were perfect and I loved that it was served on Texas toast. Finally tried the animal style fries and they're a must eat!

This was a great little find. The restaurant looks nice and welcoming. There are a ton of delicious sounding options on the menu. My Athens salad was fantastic and filling. Service was fast and I left feeling full and satisfied. A great place to go for vegan and gluten free options

Great menu to choose from. Portion sizes were quite large. We tried the Animal Fries, Mozzarella Sticks, Crunch Wrap, and Caramel Apple Shake. All of it tasted amazing.

All vegan! Portions are a good size. Reasonably priced. Tip is included in your final total. Order at the counter and then be seated, the food is brought to you. Booths and long tables available for seating. Hummus plate was delicious and could be a full meal, not just an appetizer!

Food: The food here is Great! I tried the Steak Sandwich and the Crispy Chicken Sandwich and both were very good. The Steak Sandwich was super flavorful and most of the burgers/sandwiches come with a lot of fries (also very good). And the best part is that it's all Vegan. Service: The time from order to eating is about average for restaurants and all the staff were nice. It was very busy when I was there, and they brought some drinks to our table that weren't ours but it was sorted out quickly. Atmosphere: A little crammed and quite loud which personally I don't mind but some people may get overwhelmed.

2020 update. It's just worse. How did they just let it get worse? Food = good. Okay, that's if you go at the right time. They don't serve food sometimes in the afternoon. When you get the food, sometimes it's not cooked correctly. Sometimes they literally run out of items on the menu. Sometimes they literally run out of most of the items on the menu. Sometimes, if you order things differently (like one bean over another) they ignore your request. I've been here a number of times. Most of the time my good food is met with a terrible experience. I just really want them to be good. Maybe they'll get it someday.

So good, even if you aren't vegan! I am lactose-free and egg-free, so I love knowing that I can go here and order anything off the menu and be safe. The food is wonderful! The cauliflower wings were so, so yummy! We got the mustard barbecue sauce and it was amazing. We also got a bowl and animal style fries which were both good as well. I can't wait to come back and try more things!

First time here, the staff was very outgoing and helpful. The person ringing in my order was patient with all my inquiries and questions on the food items. Food came out pretty quick. One of the best vegan burgers I've ever had. The treats are good as well. My oh my are they sugar rushes though. Approach with caution! But come back often.

OMG! This was my first time at J. Selby's and I'm so happy I found them. The atmosphere was cozy, the service was great and the food is amazing. I had the Buffalo Chicken Wrap and tomato soup with grilled cheese croutons. Everything was so good, the servings are a nice size (I had enough to take with me) and the prices are reasonable. I'm definitely going back to try a burger. My only complain would be parking. You might get lucky or you may have to walk a short ways. But totally worth it!

The cauliflower buffalo wings were delicious. The sauce had a perfect balance of acidity, unlike others I've tried at different restaurants. The crunchwrap and potato salad were exceptional, bursting with flavor. While the gyro was tasty, the "meat" was a bit dry. To top off our meal, we indulged in the tiramisu and cookies & crème oatley shakes, both of which were absolutely heavenly.

What a fantastic Vegan restaurant! Vegans and non vegans alike can enjoy the food and atmosphere. I have gone here with friends and family several times now and have never been disappointed in the food. Plenty of street parking in the surrounding blocks. It is on the pricier side and almost always busy, but it is worth it!

Not just "good considering it's vegan" it's just good compared to any restaurant. We are always very happy with our food. This place is a must try for everyone. I promise you'll love it. Can't wait to eat here again.

Phenomenal food and quick service. I myself am not vegan but was blown away by the food. We had the cauliflower wings, the crunchwrap, the crispy chicken sandwich, and a rootbeer float for dessert. Cauliflower wings were super crispy and delicious and the crunchwrap doesn't make me miss Tacobell (except the hot sauce, I wish they gave me hot sauce). We also had a side of animal fries which were also extremely exceptional. The rootbeer float really hit the spot. I'm allergic to dairy so coming here was a real treat since I'm not able to have many foods that are made with dairy.

AMAZING! J. Selby's never disappoints. Food is great, serving sizes are huge which means leftovers *happy dance*. Also, I live for their soyclones (vegan version of a blizzard). I just noticed they have mozzarella sticks...I know what I will be doing tomorrow.

This is by far the best vegan food I’ve tried in the msp area. I want to go back and try more items on the menu! The fried rice and animal style fries were fantastic. They also serve beer on tap.

One of the best places for vegan food or any food in the twin cities! I had the club sandwich with a cup of potato and white bean soup and a winterfruit dumpling. So delicious every time!

Disclaimer: I am not vegan or vegetarian. I love Love LOVE this place. I first came here with my vegan friends and was delighted by the amazing food. Everything I have had here was terrific and indistinguishable from your typical restaurant dishes. I HIGHLY recommend one of the chick'n sandwiches because they're AMAZING and you could never tell they were vegan. I recently tried a gyro too, and it was great. I really appreciate the atmosphere, too. Everyone has been super friendly and knowledgeable and take pride in the the food and the experience. They have a service charge instead of tipping, so that tells me the restaurant cares about its employees enough to pay a living wage, which makes me want to support the business. Go here and bring your carnivorous friends!

Amazing food! The chicken fried mushrooms are so good with a very “meaty” texture. The Crunchwrap (pictured) came with a vegan meat substitute that was a great texture and taste. They have a good mix of meat substitute/seitan options and classic plant-based proteins like beans, etc. There are healthy and junk food options. It is a bit pricier, but worth it because everything is so good and handmade. Heads up, they add a 15% tip to your bill (it’s order at the counter but then they bring it out.)

Amazing food! Tastes like real food, super flavorful. They have fun options for vegan food that is super comparable to the non-vegan dishes. Might be the best food I've had all year!

Delicious! And everything was labeled GF or CBGF (can be gluten free) so ordering was easy for people with allergies. The meat eating friends I went with loved everything they got and said they’d go back! Great open space for hanging out to eat as well. Highly recommend!

I love that this place is 100% vegan so there is no way to mistakenly get something non-vegan and the food is good. It is good old comfort food with appetizers, salads, burgers, shakes, drinks and lots of treats! My favorites are chilli cheese fries, carrot ginger soup, and the coffee shake.

This place is always yummy. On the weekends they serve brunch now. Picture is of the brunch crunchwrap with a side of fresh fruit. Look at all those berries! They also recently hired a pastry chef so there's a huge display case of treats at the front counter.

Updated Review: Still a great vegan staple of the Twin Cities! Added pictures of my most recent visit on Easter. :) Original 2019/2020 Review: While I haven’t been to every vegetarian/vegan restaurant in the Twin Cities (yet), this is by far my favorite place. The atmosphere is nice, feels kind of hipster-y. And the food is amazing. We ordered the nachos, Juicy Lucy, Mac n Cheese, and a cheesecake. All of it was exceptionally good. One of the best vegan macs I’ve had at a restaurant so far. You get a reasonable amount of food for the price, too.

I never write reviews, but this sandwich will haunt me until I write out my feelings. I’m from out of town (about 3.5 hours away) and found J. Selby from a quick internet search. I got the fried chicken sandwich — hands down the best plant-based chicken I’ve ever had. Soft and tender on the inside, hot and crispy on the outside. Honestly, it was better than most carnivorous fried chicken I’ve had in the past. Now I just need to plot another reason to visit St. Paul…

This place was pretty good! The only drawback is the line you wait in to order your food. If would be super helpful if they had a second register at the front to speed up the process.

Nice place. Seems to be well run. Food was tastefully above average. I tried to order a tenderloin and the place went eerily silent. I glanced around to see what I had missed, only to catch everybody slowly turning to look at me with judgemental stares, as if I had just loudly asked if I was really the only one in the room who thought dogs weren't cute or capable of having real emotion. But yeah the food was tasty.

Great googly moogly. We were in MN for three days and planned this as our first dinner stop. I'm glad it ended up being our last instead, because we TRULY went out with a bang. This place is amazing. I eat at a lot of veg places who do "mock" entrees - I've had a lot of "veg crunchwraps" and "veg Big Macs". Most of them are good, but not true to the originals. This place *nails it*. Everything was solid. We had the animal fries, the Dirty Secret, the Crunchwrap, Buffalo chicken wrap, and crispy chicken sandwich. Everything was great. Then the make your own sundae was the literal cherry on top. DO. NOT. SLEEP. ON. THIS. SPOT.

Great food! I was here with 4 of my non-vegan kids (I'm vegan). The club sandwich, mac n cheese, and the big mac style burger were great! The 2 that got the chicken ranch wrap weren't super impressed, but it was probably because we had buffalo wings for an app, so we already had our fill of the kinda greasy chicken. The wings were good, but I do think they were the reason some of us had grease tummy aches after. We got the mint oreo shake, pb chocolate shake, and tiramisu shake. All were excellent! I had the pb chocolate cereal bar - so big and delish! When I go again, I'll get nachos for an app instead of the greasier choices, and get a salad or mash for a side instead of the fries - we all got them and just couldn't handle them (they were really good though)! I really wanted to try the steak Sammy too!

The best plant-based food I have tried so far in the Twin-Cities. Such a beautiful neighborhood, great service, parking spots available. The burger was 10/10. Will definitely be going back.

Stopped in and had a quick appetizer and sandwich. The cauliflower Buffalo "wings" were very tasty and were firmer than I was expecting. I definitely reccomend stopping in specifically to try them. The GBLT was not my favorite but my partner, she loved it. Will try to stop back again soon.

Best vegan food ever! This place will not disappoint. I love that they do takeout as well. Their ice cream is also amazing. All in all, fantastic flavors and high quality from anything you get. They also give you a lot of food. You will not go hungry.

I’m not sure what I can add to what others have said. We went as the last meal of an experimental week of eating vegan. Perfect way to finish the week. My brother’s gyro was perfect as was my Nashville not chicken sandwich. We will be back many times I’m sure - next time for breakfast.

Absolutely love this place. Their food is amazing. My husband isn't big on vegan options and this is still one of his top favorite restaurants to go to! He eats meat, and still prefers this over a lot of other food. Everything on the menu is great.

We stopped in before a show, I've heard good things about this restaurant. I ordered a gyro and kombucha and enjoyed both. I asked if the potato salad had dairy because I can't eat dairy, and Everything is dairy free! It's wonderful to have a restaurant for someone that doesn't eat meat or dairy and still have so many options. It was very busy (Thursday around 6:30) so we ordered it to go but we did end up getting a table. There's a friendly cat a few houses down too.

The Meatless Mac Daddy far exceeded my expectations of what a plant based burger could ever hope to be. Crafted better than the original staple. Do yourself a favor and get the Poultry free boneless boiz. J. Selby's is working with a real top tier sweet chili sauce. Staff couldn't have been more accommodating. Will be back with bells on.

  • 5/5 Dave K. 4 years ago on Google
Not what I expected. Very enjoyable though. The double beyond burger is as messy as expected. But hey, most good double burgers are a slop fest regardless of what makes the patties. Fries are crisp and tasty. Would be great with some cajun seasoning but I say that about all fries. Nice place, easy & free parking on surrounding streets. I enjoyed. Oh and the special sauce is tasty AF.

I've been many times and it's always filing and keep in mind, the prices are as they are in order to pay the employees a livable wage. They don't expect you to tip. Pictured: Cauliflower wings, loaded tots and their community bowl 💚 I can say their soy clone can be a little too sweet tasting sometimes, almost gooey and not ice cream like. Also it's always more than I can finish by myself, so take that as you may. Overall, I know they've changed their menu since I was last there and I'm excited to go back and try new things! My favorite thing was their beet wrap and the community bowl.

  • 5/5 Tia G. 3 years ago on Google
I had never been here before until the other day I was with a friend and I got their sandwich and we shared some wings. Not even joking when I tell you that I’ve been thinking about this sandwich for the last 48 hours...it’s just a sandwich but I’m so obsessed with it, it was such a good meal I cannot get it out of my mind. I’m considering the 35 minute drive just for lunch. I live in Wisconsin, that’s how good it is, I’m not deluded just please treat yourself to good food.

Amazing vegan shakes and the fries are so yummy! I also love the crunch wrap. You really can’t go wrong! I enjoy the vibe with the open kitchen and casual seating and love that the tip is included in the prices. Also amazingly they offer a pay what you can meal for those low on funds. Way to support your community! J Shelby’s has quickly become a favorite!

The best Vegan spot in St. Paul. It is a cozy, trendy atmosphere. Service: fast and friendly service. It is often busy here. Food: I'll stick to what I enjoy, because I don't love everything. We love the Buffalo Wings and the Nachos. They never cease to fail and are generous portions, so we usually share. Parking is a challenge as this place is usually very busy and they only have street parking, so be prepared to walk a little bit. I would recommend this place for sure!

Kind of a sad experience but I tried this place for the first time for lunch a couple of weeks ago and was unimpressed with their service. This was my friend's favorite restruant so I brought her here for her birthday. It was the first time my friend had gone while in uniform (she is a cop) and the employees were incredibly rude and standoffish. While the food was quite good, my friend had a crummy birthday and now has to find a new favorite vegan\vegatarian restruant to love.

Love this place! I’ve been 3 times now and am quickly getting hooked. The tofu noodle bowl is perfect and a big portion. Tried the gblt today. Was so impressed how much seitan can be made to be like bacon. Also tried the wings for the first time- sesame citrus bbq. I am extremely impressed with the food I’ve tried, super tasty. Every time staff has been super friendly. Worth the drive from White Bear Lake!

  • 3/5 Best G. 3 years ago on Google
Really like this place - but frustrated with their inability to figure out how demand throughout the day. If you want to try something novel (e.g. one of their desserts), your options are either: 1) eat dinner at 4 p.m. or 2) order ahead for pickup later... often to show up and grab cold food. I'd be more forgiving if they were new to the business - but c'mon, you guys. If you are consistently running out of items hours before you close, MAKE MORE OF THEM.

Came here on a whim for a curbside pick up order and it did not disappoint ! Got the Crunchwrap - so flavorful and perfectly toasted, the carrot soup was so hearty and warm. The carrot cake is moist and can’t believe the topping isn’t cream cheese - it’s even better! Not a fan of the matcha shake but the food was excellent!
