Let me first start by saying I didn't go here for beer or drinks like probably 90% of the people go who here. We wanted some Irish pub food. I got the shepherds pie and my wife for the Irish stew. Both were under seasoned and a bit below expectations. I wouldn't recommend either. However, the brussel sprouts appetizer was absolutely awesome. It seemed like a grab a drink and a couple apps type place and that would be great. Service was good. The lady was so so nice but definitely struggling under the pressure. Had multiples of the food brought out and confusingly taken away. The place has a charming look/atmosphere though.

Very good! Plenty of drafts to choose from. Happy hour starts at 3. Chili dog and fries, sliders, cup of chili, croquet. Loved the lamb chili, has a nice bite to it.

I love the Chieftain. It's a great neighborhood pub good vibes, and I stop by every time I'm in SF. The regulars are good people, and there's a great deal of tourists who visit the pub. The food is great, the waiters are prompt, and the bartenders make a mean drink. On holidays, conventions and during sporting events, the pub can get busy, however, the staff has always been accommodating and I've gotten my order in a timely fashion. I highly recommend stopping by if you're visiting SF, or if you are a local. You won't be disappointed, and it may become a pilgrimage for you as it has for me.

07/2023 Ordered fish and chips and the Irish chicken burger. Very good comfort food on a long evening, hot and filling. The tartar sauce is a good addition and even a great pairing with fries. Service was fast, ambiance was great and calm. Located right at a street intersection so it is hard to miss. 09/2023 Ordered a Shepherd's Pie and an Irish Beef Stew. The Shepherd's Pie was delicious with a creamy consistency from the upper mash potatoes and a savory layer of lamb and vegetables. I did not add the free bread but should have done so. The gravy was a nice topper that added some sweetness to the potatoes. The Irish Beef Stew was a very hearty meal. The stew was the right amount of thick and had plenty of beef chunks along with assorted bite-sized vegetables.

Authentic Irish pub in the heart of San Fran. The drinks were great and the servers were entertaining. Need fish n chips or corn beef and cabage then this is your spot

Fantastic reception from the bartender. If he didn't own the place, his confidence and courtesy made me feel like he did. Came in as the last guy eating in the evening and they made me a perfect lamb Burger. I couldn't have been happier with my visit.

My brother and friend randomly stumbled into this bar on a Friday night after the giants game. The bar was not crowded but it was busy. The bartender immediately tended to us and was very friendly. We didn't order food, just drinks. We weren't there for more than 15 minutes but it was a pleasant experience. Definitely seems like a cool place to hangout and enjoy some good pub food and a drink. I'll have to come back.

A nice small Irish pub located discreetly on the street corner close to the University of Pacific Dental School. Decent selections from the tap and the staff were friendly. However the Guinness here did taste a little off, a bit watered down for my taste. But nevertheless, a good place for a quick drink. Side note: There is a police station down the block, keep that mind if you want to do something crazy.

This place is a nice and quite peaceful for a Irish fare (food and drink). Bartenders were nice especially Dylan! Cool guy and provided some tips on where NOT to go for viewing the New Years Eve fireworks. The nachos with chicken were amazing and super filling. My buddy and I could barely finish it all! Drink options were vast and I was able to have my fair share of good brews ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿป

Nice little pub tucked in downtown SF. Decided to get a couple of apps instead of an entree' because they looked so good: roasted brussels sprout in a soy/chili/honey reduction, and pub fries with lamb chili and cheddar. Delicious and large portions; had to take most home. Have a great beer selection too... you don't often find Kilkenny Cream Ale on tap!

I came here for dessert and I GOT DESSERT. My favorite was absolutely the chocolate cake but the apple tart was exceptionally flavorful and crispy. Will definitely stop by for dinner soon!

The chieftain is still wonderful and one of our favorite places to visit! Try the brussel sprouts and birria ๐ŸŒฎ tacos. Tacos in an Irish place?! YES theyโ€™re fantastic! One of the few places you can get a traditional Irish breakfast. They also have Kilkenny on top which if you know you know. Always a treat!

Refuge on a stormy night turned into incredible dinner. Lamb Burger is so good...tasty and juicy. Corned beef panini was a delightful surprise with perfect amount of kraut and a surprising bit of heat. Bartender was pleasant and Guinness was..Guinness. Will definitely be back.

Best burger in the city. Incredible flavor. Very generous size. I stopped in one evening after a long day and having not eaten since breakfast. I ordered the Chieftain Burger and loved it so much I ordered a second, which was every bit as good as the first!

We come here about once a week or more! Cozy, really good service and awesome, consistent food. They have a super tasty vegan option which is hard to find at pubs!

Haven't eaten yet. Wanted a Shepard's pie and this place is well reviewed. Showed up with one party in front of me, they were seated. I was seen and said I just wanted a Shepard's pie to go. The server then didn't speak to me again until the food came by. I wasn't even offered a seat at the bar. I just stood awkwardly in the narrow entrance for like 15 minutes. There seemed to be only one guy serving. There were 6 parties seated I could see. Maybe I'd be a bit more chill about it if I wasn't hungry and hadn't spent 5 hours on public transit but it was pretty wack. Also a Shepard's pie is like 20.83 after tax.

Yum...first night in San Francisco and our son brought us here. I had the Irish stew which was filling and very good. The Bangers and Mash looked amazing as the Shepherds Pie. Highly recommend this quaint corner bar!!

Really cool little Irish pub with great food. They have a descent selection of beer, including some great IPAs. The food was outstanding, best fish and chips Iโ€™ve had in a while and portion was huge! Bartender was super friendly and there was even an Irish band playing, great atmosphere.

Had a great time here for St Patrickโ€™s Day! Drinks are so well priced! Food seems a little expensive, but the portions are huge! Fish and Chips $20 but definitely feeds 2 people! Freshly fried I loved it!

Irish stew was great. Beer was pleasant. Little too loud for conversation..as there was a game going on and some of thr fans were getting a little too carried away.

I found this location by using Yelp and Foursquare for reviews because I was in San Francisco for work. When I got to this location it was very family-oriented. I'm not necessarily saying that they're a bunch of kids but it seemed like everybody was close and like they knew each other. The food was excellent and my drink was excellent so I had no complaints. I could tell though that the waitress thought that I was trying to complain about her when I asked for the manager. Little did she know I was actually asking for the manager so that way I can give her a compliment. Soo this should be a lesson for all the waiters, you never know what a person is going to say to the manager. I know most of the time it's negative but just keep on smiling and see what happens because they could be like me. They could be giving you a wonderful compliment.

Great selection of beers even small is a great location for a great end of week happy hour. The place doesn't seem very fancy from the outside but Good ambience and excellent service, take in account that on Friday afternoon could be reserved due to private events

The Chieftain Irish Pub is hands-down the best pub in SF. I had the bangers and mash when I went in there, and after eating it I knew there was no way I'd leave hungry. The bartenders know what they're doing, the drinks were made perfectly. The waitress was nice and got my order right. The atmosphere is delightful, and I had a great time. I only wish they served donuts here, that would be the cherry on top. The pub is a must-visit when in SF, don't miss out on this San Francisco gem!

There was an event in the area that caused the this pub to be busy BUT, we were seated at the bar in the matter of not even 5 minutes. Food was extremely good! Bartender/sever Richard was a fantastic guy with great service! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THIS PUB!!
