A small but very informative museum. Lots to look at and many items to buy. Free to get in too! Lovely service from the young lady who served us.

The train car driving area thing they have is pretty cool. You can ring their bells and rotate the display on the front. The museum is pretty small; they don't have any life size historical train cars inside or outside

This museum is tinyyyy (the gift shop is probably bigger than the museum), but interesting given the rich rail culture of SF. There's also a model railcar that's pretty cool for pictures 📸.

This place is a hidden gem! It's completely free and they have a great collection of images and pins and information. They also have a really great gift shop. It's super close to the ferry building and worth the visit.

A small museum to discover the history of San-Francisco streetcars and a driving cab where you can take the driver place on an old car. There is also a lot of goodies on the store. If you like PCC streetcar running on the historical line, it's a must have to do!! To finish, the staff is very kind and always ready to answer at your questions.

Quite a small place with lots of historical information. Best to go when tours are not there to navigate around. Staff is lovely in personality.

Alright place to stop in. Would be better if connected to the shop where the cars are serviced and can get tours of the cars

They're closed on labor day. The day most people have off to go about and do things in the city. Pretty disappointing.

This is a small, one room, free museum that is packed with history. So much of San Francisco is defined by transportation: the street cars, cable cars, Golden Gate Bridge, to name a few. This museum has photos of early San Francisco, from the 19th century before the Ferry Building was built. It has a time line of San Francisco's transportation history, photos of the San Francisco Bay before the Golden Gate bridge was built, a replica of the front of a street car, with the gears that show how it was opperated, and a lot more! I spent nearly an hour in this one small room, and I don't think I saw everything. I am definitely going to go back again. And did I mention, it's free!

Very small museum-- it's mostly a gift shop. The staff is super friendly and it's in a convenient place near the bus stop

This was more of a last minute decision since the lantern thing was canceled. The wait was pretty long but I would say worth the wait. We had so much fun playing with these illusions. If you check in on yelp you get $5 off

If you want to know anything about the transit busses history this is the place for you.

After riding the rail car for the first time I was hooked, needing some more information on the history of transit for the San Francisco region I stopped by the railway museum. I was immersed in a concentrated treasure trove knowledge not only regarding the railway system in San Francisco but also got some tid bits of information about the old Detroit railway which was really cool seeing something from home when you’re 2,000 miles away. The two lady’s that were running the museum are so passionate in what they do and it shows. I wish I could’ve asked the other lady what her name was but SUPER informative and Rose who gave me a pretty in depth history lesson. Not only are they interested in showing San Francisco’s history but those running the railway museum are so adamant on the preservation of it. If you are interested in history of any kind and have at least 15 minutes then I’d say it’s imperative that you come see this place.

Lovely little place! Very knowledgeable and passionate docents, wall to wall information, and incredibly well thought out gifts - like magnets with streetcar liveries over the years. Stop by and get your favorite - I did, and now 1051 lives on my fridge!

It is just a souvenir shop… I went there at 12 pm last Wednesday only to find it was close. The so-called museum is very small and you can see it through.

October 2023 5* Visited the place to attend corporate gathering. The place is not very big but quite amazing. You can find many old stuff and history of transit in San Francisco. You can buy different merchandise highlighting transit in San Francisco. I bought couple of train models and eraser sets for kids. The entry is free so it is worth visiting.

I never write reviews for places, but I felt this place deserved one. I would give it 10 stars if I could. The employees were super friendly, and they definitely know what they're talking about. Despite being a small museum, I learned a lot both from the signs as well as talking to the workers there. Even if you're slightly interested about cable cars or railway history in SF, I highly recommend it. Keep in mind, it's free!

It's hard for me to talk about what happened but with what just happened in Canada... The Annual Rainway Museum Festival was fantastic- the children had a blast and the adults were shooting pics non stop. So I'm waiting for a streetcar du jour to arrive because I'm doing a calendar and I'm looking through the display of old books, magazines, etc available for purchase. And what do I see? A DVD of THE TRIUMPH OF THE WILL by Lenni what's her face. On open display to purchase for $ 15 and for the children to see. Can someone please explain what connection is there between Lenni and our streetcars. Did she take part in designing them or something? My hands were shaking but I was able to finish the photo shoot. But I'm not entirely sure I want to renew my membership. My Godfather's parents were butchered at Aushwitz. And yes- I took a pic of the book.

The museum is free and from the outdoors it has an unassuming appearance. There are marvelous stories about San Francisco and there are wonderful novelty gifts you can purchase as well. Don't miss the annual streetcar calendar.

We thoroughly enjoyed commuting around San Francisco on the old cable cars and seeing how the cables operate at the museum. A must visit to see the magic of these machines.

    Awesome historical information!

I expected more. I was hoping that there would be more on trains in general. I found it to be much less informative that the Golden Spike National Park Visitor's center - that had a fair bit of history on the building of the transcontinental railroad and other such stuff. This was a nice gift shop, not much of a museum.

  • 3/5 Ian N. 4 years ago on Google
The museum is tiny. You can see everything in 5 minutes unless you stop to watch the series of videos they have on touch screen computers.

  • 5/5 Kyle O. 4 years ago on Google
    The best.

If you are in the area swing by send check it out. Lots of information about the San Francisco street cars. The museum is very small and the gift shop part is about as big as the actual museum. The lady working here was super friendly and gave me a short tour of that place.

Nice little museum once you get down from the train at ferry building. The museum has pictures|tee|small train souvenirs one can buy. There are miniature models of ferry trains inside. Museum also provide the history of San Fransisco city transportation. The supervisor of the museum is a funny and helpful person.
