Such a beautiful place to learn about the History of San Luis Obispo County. The mission is a marvel. The architecture history and the stories of the people and the cultures that shaped San Luis Obispo are shared and displayed here!

Small but informative little museum. They have photos, artifacts, books, and more during the old days of the town. It's a nice quick stop if you have time.

This place was highly informative. Very educational and entertaining. I was thoroughly impressed with the history of San Luis Obispo and especially enjoyed hearing the local history of the internment camps that help Japanese Americans. A video was playing in the media room but I was enthralled with all.of the pictures and displays they had. For filling out a brief survey I received a free postcard of my choosing. Plan to visit again with the family

Nice little history Musuem with all the old tools and equipment used in the founding of San Luis Obispo. Friendly staff and free admission. Encouraging young children to be inventors and designers or artists. Good to visit when you are in town.

Great, short blast to the past. Especially loved the panorama of SLO from a long time ago!

Update: I was quietly and respectfully reading when the man who sits at the front desk rudely and sarcastically asked me to leave. I thought he was a museum helper or curator of some sort but by his behavior, it seemed like he just wanted the whole place to himself. White guy, short hair, kinda fat, glasses, sassy attitude, I think he was wearing a plaid long sleeved shirt. I won't be returning. Lots of interesting stuff can be learned here about the settlers of the area. There's a bookstore. Not super welcoming vibe

Nice museum with well-organized display of the area's history, a group of inventors, and Jewish community history.

If you're limited on time and it's the weekend, prioritize a visit to the History Center-operated Dallidet Adobe and Gardens, where you'll get a better sense of early SLO history. The SLO History Center is located in the beautifully maintained Carnegie Library. Unfortunately the museum has few exhibits or artifacts on display relating the city's history but just a few small temporary shows about segments of the population. Truly it's a missed opportunity! Another better choice for learning about SLO's history is the SLO Railroad Museum, open only on Saturday.

A bunch of really interesting things to look at. They change it up every now and then, it is cool to see how SLO has evolved over the years.

Great informative museum about local history. Not enough info about Nipomo though.

HCSLO is in a quaint bldg that was a Carnegie Library. Since the mid-'50s it's been THE place to go for anything re the history of not only SLO city, but also County. The staff are utter experts; Thomas Kessler, and exhibits manager Brittany are extremely proactive in ensuring that exhibits are consistently up-to-date. I was astounded at how much history comes from our county; for example the USA is only a world empire because of the actions of SLO County's most famous resident, Wm Randolph Hearst. In 1898 he was a newspaper publisher in NYC; because of the way he reported the events in Cuba, the U S. declared war on Spain; by our winning that war the U.S. gained all 5 of Spain's overseas territories - three of which we still have (Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Northern Marianna Islands). Also, following the 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor our War Dept planned to move our submarine fleet to Morro Bay; that never happened because six months after Pearl Harbor we won the Battle of Midway. The world's first motel was here in the City (last bldg on the right along northbound U S. 101), and the list goes on.
