I am very critical about my seafood as I came from a chef’s family. I am 61 years old, I have traveled and eating seafood from a lot of places. This is the first chef who has solid skills and knowledge to cook seafood. A good seafood chef knows how to retained the natural flavors, the temperature and timing of cooking the variety of seafood. If you eat there, you should meet him. He is honest with each of your seafood freshness, various from just receiving them from the fishermen from minutes to days, local or other regions, s well as fresh or frozen. His prices are very fair and affordable. He is also very flexible in adjusting the portions and needs that is not on the menu. Please give him a chance to show you how seafood is cook just right! His restaurant atmosphere is certainly not impressive, but if you care your food and prices more than the ambience, this is the one. The simplicity of his place is the reason you get the fair and affordable prices.

Our food from Indio was superb. We came here with friends we met scuba diving, and they told us that we were in for a treat. Boy, we were right! Our seafood platter was out of this world, with shrimp, lobster, and more. Anyone who visits Cozumel has to eat at Indio’s!

We heard people recommending this place. It took me 3 days to find it. Somehow other restaurants had similar names… My wife ordered coconut shrimps and I had some red snapper filets. Pretty simple cooking but extremely well prepared! We were both very satisfied at this hole in the wall kind of place separated from the street by reused wood pallets… The family is heart centered and welcoming. Certainly a unique place to eat at!

Amazing food, if you’re looking for authentic Mexican and not touristy this is the place. It’s a few blocks from the main road of Cozumel. Usually I can get a stomach ache from a syrupy margarita. The margaritas tastes freshly squeezed. The seafood was fresh, probably the best we’ve had in our Mexico trip! It’s a restaurant of the owner, his wife, and their son working. Will be back soon!!!

This place was called La Casita de el Indio. Now it’s called El Sureño. Further up the street opposite the beach. It’s a blue building. Same owner and family owned business. Mr. Indio is a very nice man. We have come here several times since 2014. Food is good and affordable.

We found this place by chance and met the owner Indio Salgado. His food is excellent. The shrimp and caracol ceviches are outstanding. The black beans and rice were fantastic. Menu of the day was excellent(75 pesos). I went with my son and friend not only once but 4 times for lunch and took ceviche back to the hotel. The service is slow but who cares the food is fantastic!! Thank you Indio and family!!!

I’ve been in Cozumel for 10 days, and I have eaten in more than 12 restaurants. This is without a doubt the best seafood on the island. It’s a small place on a corner with super friendly staff. The chef came out to greet us and explain the special. I highly recommend the Iowa platter. It’s the best deal in town. Local lobster, fish, shrimp prepared three ways, octopus, rice, guacamole…all for a super reasonable price. The margarita was to die for. Also, it’s super strong. And it cost a fraction of what the tourist trap restaurants will charge. We were blown away by this place. If you want an authentic experience, killer food, and friendly faces all at an unbeatable price - this place is for you.

Indio’s was recommended by several locals and visitors and we are very Glad we listen to them. Indio and his family go out of their way for there customers. The first time we ate here we had the BeST coconut shrimp on the island. My wife and I like coconut shrimp and we have had them around the island and these are the BeST. Indio make fresh margarita’s and the are Great we bought them by the litter. Indio’s is open air restaurant Great food and margaritas. Get the tacos, tacos and the Tacos!

We can't say enough about our experience with Indio and his family. This was a 10/10 experience for us and topped off a great trip to Cozumel. We searched on Google for a good place to have some authentic Coconut Shrimp and we did not want to go to any of the tourist places close to the water to get ripped off. We had a scooter and drove to Indio's around 5pm to see where the place was. It's just a 10 minute walk from the sea or a 5 minute scooter/cab ride. Indio came out to greet us and we told him we would be back at 7pm for dinner. He asked us what we wanted to eat and we told him Coconut Shrimp. He said no problem, see you at 7. We came back at 7pm and Indio and his family greeted us and we sat down at one of the tables they set up (this restaurant is attached next to their home). They brought out some fresh guacamole and chips and we can see them working away in the kitchen. They were grating the coconut and we found out that Indio had actually sent his son out to buy a fresh coconut for our dinner request after we talked with him earlier in the day. The Coconut Shrimp was absolutely delicious...so fresh and so tasty. Eating at Indio's is like eating at your friends house. They make you feel so welcome and they are so gracious that you have chosen to come and eat at their place. We were both so satisfied with our dinner (we also brought our own wine) and the friendliness of Indio and his family. Our whole meal cost $380 pesos (guac & coconut shrimp). That's the price of 1 dish if you eat closer to the water. If you are on the island for a visit, do yourself a favour and visit Indio. You won't regret it. There are so many great and cheaper options if you just get out of the tourist zone.

We've been back to Indio's Time and time again. He went above and beyond to make our anniversary dinner extra special. He and his staff literally treat us like family. The food is amazing, for sure, but we'll go back every time for the heart that they share!

Indio’s restaurant is a hidden gem- the seafood is incredibly fresh and the prices are amazing. The flavors are dynamic and exciting, the coconut shrimp is the best I have ever had. Do yourself a favor- go to Indio’s and ask for the “Iowa platter”, better known as the “oh my gosh, that’s amazing” platter- it’s sea seafood and it comes with Lobster, three kinds of shrimp, fish fillets, vegetables and toasted garlic bread. We watched the sunset on the porch area where we were enjoying the seafood. Indio is a gracious host- he made us feel so welcome. We will come back to Cozumel again for Indio’s because there is beautiful ocean everywhere but only one island with Indio. Go there, bring your friends!!

This was a pleasant surprise. The whole place seemed to be operated by a local boy who took the order, served our food and drinks and took the payment. All while looking after his youger sibling a watching TV. The food was GREAT though. Some of the best we had on Cozumel.

Great tasting simple seafood dishes, friendly staff, plenty of accoutrement, all at reasonable prices.

If you are an American do not go here. Predatory pricing, child labor, dirty seating, no menu, and charged 250 pesos per person for meager portions. Most I’ve paid at a “restaurant” and by far the worst. Feel free to contact me if you need additional information.

I used to go to Indo's years ago when he was on Salas between Melgar y Av 5. We went tonight to his current location and it was amazing. The coconut shrimp and octopus was outstanding. I will be back for sure.

Owner/ chef is very friendly and service oriented. He speaks great English and very welcoming. He gave me delicious gauc & chips on the house! And I quickly devoured it. Had the fried shrimp tacos and grill fish tacos… again, I inhaled the food 😅 because it was cooked and seasoned well and delicious! So glad I found this place! Worth the walk! That tamarind sauce is like crack. Delicious and reminds me of the sauce in Indian restaurants back in the states. Would come again for the fresh delicious food and hospitality! Thanks chef!

It's hard to put into a restaurant review how sublime it was to stop into Indio's place for a bite to eat. The man is an excellent cook, a master storyteller, and from personal experience, an even better man. To me, he exemplifies all that I love about Mexico. Fellow divers, we all share a longing for spontaneous, uplifting adventures. I'm telling you, visit this place for the coconut shrimp, but stay to meet Indio. You are going to get what you want. The guy should run for mayor of Cozumel, and I wish him much success.

There are 200 reviews already praising Indio and his family, but I'll add one more. When you come to eat here, you feel taken care of. It's no frills and allows you to focus on the delicious food. It is unique to the other restaurants I tried in Cozumel. Make the walk and enjoy someone who genuinely wants you to have a nice meal on a human level, not just because you're a customer.

Authentic place, great and fresh food. Our favorite place on Cozumel in two weeks. Fresh seafood. You can pre-order a fish which is the catch of the day and choose the way they prepare it. They have red snapper, grouper and the lion fish (look at the Pic) as well as fishes I can't remember now. They even have lobsters sometimes. The coconut battered prawns are amazing. Sauces / salsas are fresh and well-prepared. Pulpo ajillo or alla diabola is mouth-watering and delicious. Fishes can be fried or prepared in aluminum foil in the oven. Every visit starts with totopos, a delicious guacamole and sometimes pico de gallo. And Cynthia, the girl who is serving, is just a sunshine, like her brother (how btw is 14 years old, my fellow Germans 😉). Perfect value for the money. Ambiente is authentic and it's a clean clean place for Mexican circumstances. Music is good. Great beer prices btw... Altogether 5/5. By far the best place to eat amazing sea food on Cozumel - try it and give it a chance, you won't regret it! 👍

My previous review I thought La Casita de Indio was closed or under construction and maybe gone. Silly me, they moved across the street, so most pictures show their old location building not their current site. As everyone says, their food is fabulous. Their stuffed fish was incredible. We will return!

The fish tacos were absolutely delicious. I have a gluten allergy and they have corn tortillas. They were very fresh and were accompanied by fresh guacamole. The price was very reasonable. This is not a fancy tourist spot. This is the type of place where the locals eat. 10/10 will definitely eat here again.

Such a great place !!! We went there twice and we were soooo well received by the waiter and the cook !! They are so kind, joyful and fun ! We had the Plato Iowa the first time and it was sooooo good ! The second time we took various tacos and they were delicious too ! The prices are very fair too! Clearly a precious address I'll share to everybody going to Cozumel. I highly recommend!

Delicious food, wonderful atmosphere and you're supporting a wonderful family business. My friends stumbled across Indio's because it was by their hotel & they said it was the tastiest smell on the whole island. They were absolutely right. Highly recommend you call ahead to make reservations as the seating is limited, but there isn't a bad seat in the place.

Indio is very friendly, social & was unexpectedly generous. The restaurant is family run by him, his wife & their kids. He speaks English well (later we found out because he spent 24yrs in the US - California & Nevada). We scootered over last night Tuesday 8/9. While we were there it started sprinkling for a bit then pouring rain for a lengthy period so we ended up moving our sampler platter & margaritas a few times - finally ended up inside where there's only 1 small table & a few chairs that were already occupied by new patrons that had arrived walking in the rain & were soaking wet. A few other small tables (3) were done eating & just waiting out the rain inside as well. He apologized profusely about our food getting wet by the heavy rains (usually they are short rains in this season), brought out a 2nd table so we could sit & finish eating. He also brought out a bottle of tequila & encouraged us all to partake on-the-house. We all chatted & drank shots for a good ~hour due to the torrential rains. When the rain lightened 2 tables departed. The college gals from the new table didn't have any cash so 2 of them hiked over to the atm at Mega (we recommended the Citibank blue atm in the middle & to not put their card in atms that pull the card inside the machine because they can get stuck in the machines indefinately) & we stayed and chatted with the now solo college gal. Indio entertained us with some of his interesting life stories & life lessons. He treats you like an extension of his family & has made us customers for life ❤ All the food is fresh & delicious. The guacamole & chips are complementary. Absolutely superb!! I would give it 10 stars if possible! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Had the platter for 2. This place has a lot of hype but the seafood I thought was pretty average and mild tasting. The salsa wasn't as flavorful either. Went to a couple of other places that were a little cheaper, tastier and had bigger portions. But maybe the portion seemed small because they were out of octopus and conch that day so they subbed with some fish and shrimp which aren't as dense. They cook their coconut shrimp pretty well. Seating is a bit cramped and uncomfortable if it's raining. But the owner took care of us with tequila when it started pouring and we were stuck there for a bit which was very kind of him to do.

(Translated by Google) La casita del Indio moved half a block up (away from the beach) is still excellent. To identify it now they must look for a house that says BLVD (Original) La casita del indio se mudó a media cuadra más arriba (sentido contrario a la playa) sigue siendo excelente. Para identificarlo ahora deben buscar una casa que diga BLVD

We had heard great things about this place and they were all true! The food was VERY tasty and plenty of it. The group next to us ordered a large seafood platter that had some of everything. Watching Indio prepare it so that everything came together at the same time was like watching a maestro conduct an orchestra.
