Very nice Catholic church to visit here in El Salvador. If your in town as a tourist, it's a good few hours to stop by and check out the beautiful architecture and details. You can spend around 1:00 to 3 hours depending on how much you choose to check out. There was no fee for entry. It's two levels and on the lower floor there are a few tombs. Definitely worth the visit just to see the place.

(Translated by Google) CANONIZATION MONSTER OSCAR ARNULFO ROMERO OCTOBER 13, 2018 Known as the "Parish of San Salvador" or also as "Parroquia El Sagrario" had as guiding rectors José Matías Delgado and Nicolás Aguilar in 1808, who historically are known as the independence heroes. According to records, it was elevated to a cathedral in 1842. In September of 1877, initiatives were taken to build this church for the second time. This was located in the old location of the convent and temple of Santo Domingo in front of the Plaza Barrios. The historical data detail that, in 1888, the second building with Roman style was inaugurated. It was constructed of fine woods, some brought from Lebanon with the purpose that it was more flexible before the telluric movements. It was characterized for housing beautiful images, ornamentations and altarpieces painted by Salvadoran artists. However, it was reduced to ashes after an unstoppable fire on August 8, 1951. Since then, efforts have been gathered to build the third cathedral of San Salvador. The first stone was blessed and laid in October 1956. The works were delayed because of the armed conflict that the country experienced. However, the work was completed on March 19, 1999, consecrating and opening the Catholic cult. The Cathedral presents a scheme of Roman type, of a single nave crossed by two other sides forming a cross of rectangular proportions that ends in a circular altar. His art was forged by Fernando Llort who made a mixture of western culture with others of indigenist roots, representing the integrating cultural reality of the Salvadoran people. In the ceramic mural the people of God are represented allegorically, the new man and new woman with the instruments used for their work, also celestial figures as guardian angels; the dove, symbol of peace and the representation of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ. Inside you will be surprised to see the beauty and at the same time the simplicity of this building. Colorful stained glass windows, eight colorful oil paintings that portray the life of Christ in the altar area brought from Pamplona, Spain, and even four beautiful sculptures of the San Mateo, San Lucas, San Marcos and San Juan evangelists. In the central part of the Cathedral you can appreciate the majesty of the dome. In it, heaven is represented as a paradise in which, together with the Most Holy Trinity, Saint Joseph and the Virgin Mary, they participate in the bliss of angels and people of all races and social strata; animals and vegetation are included in it to indicate the universal character of the redemption of Christ. You can also see in one of its side chapels the image with the invocation of the Mother of the Savior, belonging to the seventeenth century. This was restored in Iberian territory and was donated to El Salvador by Queen Sofia of Spain in February 2001. It is recommended that all visitors complete their journey to the crypt where you will find the mausoleums of religious authorities and the tomb of Monsignor Óscar Arnulfo Romero. Open to the public: 6:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m.

It's a quaint humble church. There's a mausoleum of the priest who was murdered in the church. We went to mass and it was lovely.

I was never a fan of the architectural style of the Cathedral but it has grown on me, specially at night. It's a beautiful sight. It is grand, husky and tall which I am guessing was the main goal when they designed it.

This a such a beautiful Cathedral. The stations of the cross hauntingly beautiful. Saint Oscar Romero is buried here. When you step into this Cathedral, I stepped into the story of the Church in El Salvador: a story of great suffering and persecution, but also of enduring grace. Stop in for Mass, Confession, prayer, and to venerate the great Obispo y San, Óscar Romero.

It is a nice big church building, well maintained, very nice paintings, the ceiling is well designed, the lights are good, floor well polished. Mass was on, when I visited, and it’s very loud and chaotic outside, but it’s peaceful inside, they have a good sized gathering for mass, and all are welcomed to attend.

This cathedral is the main catholic templo. This building replaced the old cathedral after a fire destroyed it back in the fifties. Probably it took some 20 years to complete because the construction work stopped for several years. The front of the cathedral was enhanced by a two giant Llort signature mosaics made by one of the most famous local artist, until they were completely destroyed by orders of the SanSalvador Archbishop, very very bad idea
