This
building
built
in
1746
housed
the
central
hospital
of
the
city
of
Santa
Marta
for
more
than
two
centuries.
It
was
initially
cared
for
by
the
religious
of
the
San
Juan
de
Dios
order,
hence
its
name,
and
later,
in
1880,
it
came
under
the
care
of
the
sisters
of
the
Presentation
of
the
Blessed
Virgin
of
Tours.
In
1991,
when
the
new
central
hospital
of
Santa
Marta
was
completed,
this
Republican-style
building
was
abandoned
for
almost
10
years.
Later
it
was
declared
an
“Asset
of
Cultural
Interest
of
National
Character”
and
in
2002
the
San
Juan
de
Dios
corporation
was
created,
with
the
aim
of
restoring
it
and
converting
it
into
a
cultural
and
academic
center,
this
is
how
the
University
of
Magdalena
gets
involved
in
this
process.
and
began
the
project
of
building
a
museum
inside
the
building
that
would
offer
its
visitors
the
opportunity
to
know
and
perceive
the
different
narratives
and
readings
about
the
history,
milestones,
events,
characters,
places
and
everyday
life
that
make
up
the
character
of
region,
based
on
consultation
and
interaction
with
local,
academic
and
scientific
communities.
