The fountain in Plaza del Toural has a somewhat sinister history. It's curious. According to the records, it was requested by citizens around 1584 and finally installed in 1820, that is, almost three hundred years late, the bureaucracy was also slow in those times. The reason for this delay was that there was no water to feed the future fountain. The water was channeled to the inquisition building, located on the site now occupied by the Compostela Hotel, about 200 meters away in a straight line. It was necessary to wait until the inquisition was abolished, its building auctioned and its water redirected for public use so that the work could be carried out.

This fountain has a particular history, it was requested by the citizens in 1584 but installed only in 1820, the reason being that there was not the necessary water to feed it, so we had to wait until the building with the inquisition, which was 200 meters away in a straight line (where the Hotel Compostela is now), was abolished, so that the water could be rechanneled for public use. So the eerie thing is that the water that fed the spring was what the condemned drank before ending up on the gallows.

There is a little grocery store nearby and you're next to an ice cream store and you can even sit on the edge of the building around the corner to escape the rare SDC sun.

The sculpture at the top of the building is quite original.

In contrast to the colorful other Spanish towns, it seems... the sandstone everything is a bit gray. There is a lack of greenery in the old town.

Beautiful and central square in the old town of Compostela with a central fountain. It is home to the Pazo de Bendaña, which houses the Eugenio Granell foundation and where part of his work is exhibited. In July, concerts of various music are offered.

It is an emblematic square. In the center of the old area, close to the Cathedral and with many good services in its surroundings: cafes, restaurants, hotels, several very interesting museums, churches and small shops with typical Galician items. Good for children, young people and adults.
