Definitely a worthwhile visit! Anyone interested in the tradition, heritage and history of the island will be offered an intensive and informative insight here. This private museum was built with a lot of love and is run on a voluntary basis. The excellent tour is available in several languages, and you should watch the short video about the history.

We got lost and ended up at the museum by accident. It turned out to be a great accident thanks to the amazing guide who welcomed us and took us through an interesting part of Madeiras history. He also gave us great ideas of what to do in the area. 5/5, would get lost again.

Really nice visit and very highly recommended. We walked up the hill to the limestone museum and were welcomed by the nicest tour guide we ever met! The museum is nice, but what makes it really interesting is the whole story and history of the limestone industry. The tour guide has a lot of knowledge and knows how to tell a compelling story. On Madeira this is really one of the more unique, and non commercial, experiences. Make sure you give them a visit!

But by chance we discovered a highlight on our vacation in Madeira. Super friendly and informative 1.5 hours with very pleasant, funny, tragic and interesting explanations on the topic: Madeira and the creation of the island, what does lime have to do with Madeira? A museum on the topic: Lime and the difficult extraction and processing up to it 80s. Tourism and Madeira. At the end there were mega tips for the rest of our vacation👍 BR Alette & Björn

The museum was not on our initial plan list, but we're happy we went for a visit. Our guide was very helpful and taught us so much about the history of the place and Madeira in general. Definitely worth a visit both for the history lesson and the stunning view.

Very interesting place where you can really feel how it was not such a long time ago, to be a quarry worker, where you can phisically touch the history of the island and gain a lot of knowledge thanks to an amazing tour guide with a fantastic sense of humour. Totally worth visiting and spending an afternoon, even though it's not that obvious to find. Hidden gem :).

What a fabulous experience. My guide was really great, lots of information and explained things so well. The whole story of how the mine workers lived and worked was incredible - the short video is excellent. The fossils are amazing as well. And the scenery is out of this world. Well worth a visit.

We visited this hidden gem of a museum during our 2-week holiday in February and are so glad we did. Very interesting part of the Madeiran history and not-at-all touristy. The best museum visit we had. However, what really made it a 5-star experience was ’Ze, the incredibly nice guide who talked to us for an hour or so. He really made it fun and interesting. And he is a genuine and witty character! Thank you, ’Ze! Keep up the great work! Best wishes, Axel & Jennifer

Superb visit which retraces the Chaux route, we learn a lot about the manufacturing methods, their working conditions and the island of Madeira. We were welcomed by a super friendly, passionate, multilingual guide, who gave us lots of advice for the rest of the trip. A big thank-you ! The visit is free, financed by the association. Allow less than 1 hour on site. And finally the view near La Chapelle is very beautiful. It's worth the detour !

Ca. 430 m uphill from town. The museum is well-built with a detailed video explaining the processes people once used when worked with limestones. The man at the reception was kind. I did not see much from the open-air museum either because I didn't find it or because what I've seen was all of it..? I doubt it. Anyways, the view from up there is good. However, I would suggest to go by car. If not, then choose the road which passes by the chapel on the hill. You will get a better view ;)

Great experience, we can only recommend it. We visited this museum with our 6year old son and he also enjoyed it, especially the possibility to see and touch 7mil years old fossils. The guide was really nice and talked about Madeira, its history and mining with a lot of passion. He also gave us advice on what to do and see on Madeira. Very nice visit!

What a fascinating and tucked away museum! Our guide was very nice and incredibly informative, even about great places to eat in the area! Don’t be concerned with the narrow dirt road, follow it down and check out an important part of the island’s history! Also a fantastic spot for a picnic.

I visited this small museum last week it was certainly a hidden gem. The free guided tour (you can make a donation to help the museum) was fantastic and informative with lots of information about the local area as well as the mining industry. The guide was incredibly interesting and helpful by providing ideas for other areas to visit and eat. Thanks

We visited this place 2 days before. It was an coincidence that we found this place and we didn’t know what to expect. The guide was really nice, he told us everything about the museum as well as about life on Madeira. We really recommend this place, it was worth it.

Small but interesting museum with an excellent guide! We have learned so much about lime, the process, about the island and it’s culture. Next to that, we’ve also received great tips for restaurants and activities around the island. Would highly recommend visiting this museum. But beware that you need to drive a bit further than the location given on google maps. On your left you will find a sandy road that leads to the museum.

You should visit the museum in the first days of your stay on Madeira. The personal guided multilingual tour about the historical story, especially about the lime production was just interesting and impressive aswell. At the end you can receive a honest recommendation of what you should do and what to visit on Madeira.

Amazing! The museum is easy to find, it is for free and with a very lovely guide (for no extra fee). The story about limestone and Madeira is told very lively and is related to past and present life in Madeira. At the end, guide gave us very useful tips on what to do (and what not to do), eat and visit in Madeira. We recommend visiting this museum early on your trip :)

The museum itself is pretty small, but the awesome guide compensates for it! We discussed the lime of course, but also life on the island itself, travelling etc and we got the best tips on restaurants and places to visit on Madeira. There are pretty views over the valley, tons of lizards enjoying the sunny roof of the museum and cute garden where you can have coffee. Don't forget to bring cash as you'll surely want to leave tips!

A great place to learn about the culture and history of the Madeira and people. There was a very kind guide waiting for us when we had arrived (we didn't book anything in advance). He is very enthusiastic and can tell very interesting stories about the life as a limestone worker, the fossils and the life of Madeiran people. It was a wonderful experience. We even got a few tips of where to go next, such levadas to walk and nice spots to eat. We wish we had visited him at the start of our vacation.

The tour is very good, the good man speaks 4 languages, including German. It's nice to find out a little about Madeira. Madeira also has to struggle with the climate.

(Translated by Google) Here you can see an original lime kiln. Easy footpath, but not suitable for wheelchairs. Very informative little museum funded by donations. (Original) Hier sieht man eine originale Kalkbrennerei. Leichter Fußweg, jedoch nicht Rollstuhl geeignet. Sehr informatives kleines Museum, welches durch Spenden finanziert wird.

Very interesting story about Madeira told by an enthusiastic guide. Lots of fossils found during the winning of limestone under very heavy circumstances. Small museum. Must see by anyone who wants to know more about the history of Madeira. Note! The guide is not available every day!
