ICAR Canned Beef Monument

Tourist attraction Historical landmark

👍 It’s worth a quick visit due to the interesting story behind it. A tongue in cheek memorial to the inadequate humanitarian aid provided to the city during the siege of Sarajevo. Pork products to a Muslim community, expired and inedible food does deserve a sarcastic response People often mention monument,

A monument that satirizes the laxity of international aid during the siege of Sarajevo. It looks like it was heavily graffitied, but it has been repaired in recent years.

Former soldier told me the ARBiH and the VRS used to throw these things at each other as a joke, because whoever ate it first would die of food poisoning. "More deadly than an actual grenade." For real though the full backstory behind this thing is hilarious, and I really appreciate that they made a fking monument out of it hahahaha

My litle johnys big johny died during the siege of sarajevo, a can dropped from the air went thru his skull and him dying in the process. It was very very tragic. At least it was a great dinner but it did make me sad and it tasted kinda like pork that had been soaked in detergent also rest in peace big johny although I was serbian invader with him. great monument though I would absolutely go visit if you live near by (like 200km radius) You are making tito cry if you do not visit. justice to big johny like thank very much britain and france

Loved this monument. It highlights the inadequacies of international aid at the time but in a fun manner. Some cans of meat that were delivered during the BosIan war to the people in Sarajevo were left over from the Vietnam war! Sometimes they delivered Pork to Muslims …

Restored as at 2023. This is an important peice of art when seen in the context of surrounding areas and history. A welcome symbol of the obvious inadequacy of international aid at the time, spot it outside the much better Museum of Bosnian History and the Tito Caffè near Holiday Hotel if you're walking by.

For poor maintenance of the place. A lot of graffiti and rubbish around.

An important piece of art outside of some other important museums. Make sure you stop in them to get more context. Unfortunately, the monument has been defaced quite a bit, which makes it hard to experience :(

The best monument to the senselessness of the functions of the international community and the council of Europe and the European Union in the world. Their ultimate outreach is sending cans of questionable origin to people in need. ICAR cans are a symbol of the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina. What Spam was to the Allies in WWII, ICAR was to us. The questionable meat contents of the can that HAD to be eaten in the absence of other food. A must visit.
