If you happen to be travelling in Sarajevo, I highly recommend you stay at the War Hostel. Bosnia and Herzegovina is a beautiful country with breathtaking landscapes and rich culture, however it is a country that it still very much scarred by the horrendous and devastating war that took place thirty years ago. With this in mind, I would highly recommend you consider staying at the War Hostel while in Sarajevo. It is by far a unique experience unlike any other hostel I have been to. Make time to speak with your hosts who themselves had to endure the horrors of the siege of Sarajevo. The host family are very welcoming and will go out of there way to ensure you take away something from this experience. They are always willing to talk and itā€™s a rare opportunity to learn more about the troubled history of Bosnia. To add to the immersion, the rooms are filled with artefacts and newspaper articles. You can even use the actual soap used during the siege while in the bathroom. They also run a small but fascinating museum down the street with plenty of information about the war. Access is free and itā€™s worth taking an hour to visit. If you stay at the hostel, the host family also offer tours of the front lines in the mountains or of the scars left in the city. Guests receive a discount and I highly recommend this experience. Itā€™s not everyday that you get the chance to explore bunkers and trenches with a veteran who actually fought there. Sadly the Hostel had to close during the pandemic, but itā€™s fantastic that they have decided to reopen in order to offer a unique and educational visit for travellers who come to visit Sarajevo.

A very different experience. The War Hostel gives you a feel of the siege with the ambiance, most of the items there are original and belong to the family who owns the hostel. Don't miss the tours, they are amazing. Specially going to the hills with Jasmin. I felt very welcomed and they provided me with valuable information. The hostel has also an amazing view of the city, it's close to everything and has all the amenities for backpackers, like plugs for each bed (and inside the lockers).

Totally recommended if you're looking for a full experience when visiting Sarajevo. Unique accomodation for its furniture, very clean, super comfy beds (despite it might not seem like), and a super available and approachable owner. Don't lose the opportunity to meet him and ask him any question about the war in Sarajevo!!

This place is awesome! Best place to come if youā€™re looking for a unique experience, and if you want to learn about the Bosnian war. Itā€™s family owned, the owners are lovely, and thereā€™s a lot of effort put into you having an authentic war experience. The place is decorated in war apparel, thereā€™s stories all over the walls, and a bunker to watch war documentaries in. And ask about sleeping in the war bunker - itā€™ll be a unforgettable experience! :)

War Hostel is an accomodation experience mixed with as much education and learnings about the Sarajevo siege you would like. Showers and toilets have been recently renovated and there is a small common room. The room was 5 beds, mix of mattresses and bunkers which were as comfortable as any dorm bed. You will be surrounded by war artefacts and articles to immersive yourself, while host ā€˜01ā€™ is available for questions at any time, and the tour with ā€˜Fatherā€™ to the frontline who fought in the war to share his story is touching and detailed. Would recommend anyone looking to do something a bit different but also learn from locals. You will have the normal comforts of a hostel, minus a kitchen, and the hosts have a commitment to continue to improve. Looking forward to seeing the hostel continue to grow and allow Sarajevo to share their story. You take out what you want of the experience and activities and the city. The attached War Museum is exceptional too and would recommend visiting too.

This hostel is more than a bed to sleep on, itā€™s an educating experience into life during the war. This one floor hostel with 5 beds, a common room, two toilets and two showers are filled with war artefacts which paint a picture of what life was like during the aggression. The hostel is held in the same house the family lived in during the war. The hosts are incredibly knowledgeable and willing to share there experiences and answer questions you may have, they have put a lot of effort into this hostel to educate. The hostel offers a few tours, one of which is a tour to the front lines with the host who fought himself, items an eyeopening and harrowing tour. The more you put into this experience the better it will be, ask questions, look at the artefacts, do the amazing tours on offer.

The hostel was very nice and cleaned. The host is easily approachable and available to explain the reasons to make such a hostel. It was a pleasure.

Staying here is one of the best experiences I've ever had, I highly recommend it if you are in Sarajevo. I'd even recommend coming to Sarajevo just to experience it. It is a unique experience which allows you to get a taste of what life was like during the war and has been created by survivors of the war. Zero One really made our experience and it was amazing to get the chance to learn from him. I will definitely be back.

Hands down one of the best hostels that I have ever stayed at. The host and his family are truly amazing honourable people who you could learn a lot from. It really made me feel like I was in a middle of a war, and Iā€™m glad that I had this experience.
