A nicely maintained monument, the archaeological museum at Sarnath is a must visit for visitors visiting Varanasi. The atmosphere was beautiful. There were many groups of Buddhists from many different countries. I felt honored to be sharing their devotion. The excavation site is awe inspiring. The gardens and the lawns are well maintained. The museum attached to the site is small but very nice with interesting pieces. Definitely should be part of a Varanasi visit.

This is like an open air museum that exhibits the findings and excavations from the archaeological site of Sarnath, historically important because it was the location of the Buddha's first public sermon. The exhibits are in excellent condition and are excellently maintained. It is a place that is worth visiting. The only problem is the ticketing is online through a very convoluted process, and had the guard not helped, Il several others and I would have just given up and left.

It's one of the oldest archaeological museums of india situated in Sarnth where you can see lots of statues and scriptures of during Buddhist period. The entry fee for Indian is 5 rupees only. You'll be provided bag and mobile locker. Mobiles are not allowed in the museum, probably for securing from radiation while cameras are allowed. This is best place to visit for history lovers to know the historical significance of our country. Thank you.

Thank god this place was open. Being a Friday museum was closed. If one is interested in understanding, should have lots of time to read the details and correlate. Once you enter on left side a small air-conditioned room, in which video are played about the place. Unfortunately adequate signage is not given and most of the visitors miss it. Also the hall is too small. Management is requested to review and do the needful. Winter is the best season, otherwise one need to carry umbrellas 🌂 to protect against sun.

Nicely built Buddha Statue. Must place to visit if you're visiting Varanasi for the first time. It's bit far from the main city, major challenge is the traffic here, so take-out good amount and time to visit this place.

Historic place, beautifully maintained. First time we visited long back in 2010. And this time we went on 26th Jan 2022. However, could see only from outside as the entry was closed due to covid situation. We could visit the Buddha temple beside it though. You will surely feel a thrill if you remember the historical facts related to Buddha.

At a distance of approximately 9 km from Varanasi Junction, Archaeological Buddhist Remains or Monastery Ruins is an excavated site in Sarnath. Just Beside Archaeological Museum, it is one of the popular archaeological sites in India, and among the must-visit Sarnath Tourist Places. The premises are vast and will take around an hour or 2 to circumnavigate the entire premises. Dhamek stupa is bang next to these archaeological complexes and is visible from anywhere in the premises. Must visit!

Nicely maintained place. Garden is beautifully maintained. Surprised to see all the cleanliness that too in UP. Just joking. Just keep in mind it closes at 1700 hrs, so if you buy tickets for the monument and museum together then stagger your time accordingly. Top of ashoka's pillar is kept in museum. So don't waste your time in locating it here and there.

It's surreal. If you think, how lucky we are to see a site which is more than 2000 years old. And some the things are still intact. 😵 I would suggest to revisit some wiki pages before you visit this place as it will make your visit more fruitful. We took a guide which explained us all the sites and their importance he only took 300₹

This historical site is maintained so well. Kudos to the team who keeps it green and clean. There is a sense of peace here like any other Buddhist monastery especially when you sit by the stupa. There is an entry fee of 25 rupees that you need to pay online. Please note you can't enter the site otherwise as there is no provision of buying tickets at the gate. The museum is also nearby that you can visit if that interests you. There is a separate entry ticket for the museum that you need to buy. I personally liked this space a lot. When we visited there were many monks who were praying and it was so peaceful to experience that.

Marvelous place with a huge collection of Buddhist remains at the stupa. Check the google map and get a picture of overall compound. Do not be loud here, as there are many monks praying (yes, this is a very significant religious place for many practicing Buddhists), eating and drinking is prohibited, for the same reason. There are lot of street food places outside this campus. Buy a combined ticket for the stupa and the museum.

I visited for the first time. It's great place for Historical monuments lover. Also it's a very spiritual place for Buddhists. We have to buy only entry tickets of Rs 20 by scanning the qr code over there. There's also a light show which by projectors they display on the stupa. 6:30 pm evening (Rs 200 per person for half an hour show)

One of the most visited places of the town Sarnath. There are entry fee of 25 INR/Adults. If you have intrest in history you will love this place. There is a museum too out side of gate, opposite to the ticket counter. You can get your dslr (without tripod, since professional photoshoot are not allowed without pass) and get some nice shots here.

Disclamier : To go inside you need to get your ticket booked online. Now about the place : What an awesome place kudos to the state government for maintaining the place integrity and ancient feel. Nice clean and history rich places.Spacious that makes it even more enjoyable. I went with my family and it was best to go there with family. This made me feel that banaras has lot more to show and not just ghats. Read about the places in info guide it gives you more clarity and view to see the places and not just seeing some random stone and thinking 😅. Happy travel !

This is a sight to behold. The entire vibe of this place is so soothing. And, it teaches you a lot about Buddhist culture and its history. I would recommend hiring a guide (you can get them from the entry gate) and visit the temple and the museum too. Tickets are available online and at the gate, usually it's best to get the ticket online as the line is always too long.

A very scenic and beautiful place, with history in its lap and seeing the dilapidated houses dug up from the excavations of a very old culture on different sides, it feels as if we have come into history. Very nice place worth visiting.

Sarnath is a small town located in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, just a few kilometers away from the city of Varanasi. It holds great significance for Buddhists as it is the place where Gautama Buddha first taught the Dharma after attaining enlightenment. The Buddhist remains of Sarnath are a testament to the rich history and cultural heritage of Buddhism in India. One of the most prominent Buddhist remains in Sarnath is the Dhamek Stupa, which is believed to be built at the exact spot where Buddha gave his first sermon. The stupa is a magnificent structure, standing at a height of 43.6 meters and adorned with intricate carvings depicting scenes from the life of Buddha. It is a popular pilgrimage site for Buddhists and a must-visit for anyone interested in the religion. Another significant Buddhist site in Sarnath is the Chaukhandi Stupa, which is believed to be the place where Buddha met his first disciples and formed the Sangha. It is a square-shaped stupa with an octagonal tower on top, reflecting a mix of Hindu and Buddhist architectural styles. The stupa is a peaceful and serene place, perfect for meditation and reflection. The Ashoka Pillar is another important Buddhist remains in Sarnath. It is a tall and majestic structure with four lions standing back to back on top, symbolizing Buddha's teachings spreading in all four directions. The pillar is made of polished sandstone and is a symbol of Ashoka's conversion to Buddhism and his efforts to promote the religion. Apart from these major sites, there are also several monasteries and temples in Sarnath that hold great significance for Buddhists. The Mulagandhakuti Vihara is a modern Buddhist temple built by the Mahabodhi Society in the 20th century. It houses a golden statue of Buddha and is a popular place for meditation and prayers. The Thai Temple, also known as Wat Thai Sarnath, is a beautiful golden temple built by the Thai community in Sarnath. It is a replica of the famous Wat Phra That Doi Suthep temple in Thailand and is a popular tourist attraction. Overall, the Buddhist remains of Sarnath are a treasure trove of ancient Buddhist art, architecture, and history. They offer a glimpse into the life and teachings of Buddha and serve as a reminder of the enduring legacy of Buddhism in India. Visiting these sites is a truly enriching experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in Buddhism or Indian culture. The serene atmosphere and peaceful surroundings make it an ideal place for introspection and self-reflection. Sarnath truly is a must-visit destination for anyone seeking spiritual enlightenment and a deeper understanding of Buddhism.

Sarnath Museum is the oldest site museum of Archaeological Survey of India. It houses the findings and excavations at the archaeological site of Sarnath, by the Archaeological Survey of India. Sarnath is located near Varanasi, in the state of Uttar Pradesh. The museum has 6,832 sculptures and artefacts. To keep the antiquities found from the site, a decision was taken in 1904 by the Government to construct a site museum adjacent to the excavated site at Sarnath. It was due to initiative of Sir John Marshall, the then Director General of Archaeology in India, that this museum was created. The plans were prepared by Mr. James Ramson, the then consulting Architect to the Government of India. The building was completed in 1910 to house, display and study the antiquities in their right perspective. The building forms half of a monastery (Sangharam) in plan.

Archaeological and historical place of King Ashoka and Lord Gautam Buddha. A large Stupa with a height of approx more than 100 foot is made by king Ashoka and build in late 500CE. It's a huge structure with a large base. It's a sacred place for people who follow Buddhism. Place open at 8:00am in the morning and closes at 5:00pm in the evening. It's open for public and everyone needs to follow covid norms and social distancing. Add it to your must See list when you visit Banaras, Varanasi

This place is quite amazing to visist. You will feel peace here of totally another level. It is a excavation site changed into a wonderful garden. Greenery along with remains of monuments are present all around. This place has remains of many viharas (A place of living for worshiper of Buddhism), Dhamegh Stupa and most importantly broken piller made by Ashoka which capitol is currently used as our National Emblem.

Needless to say it's beautiful, well maintained garden, neat and clean premise. Only problems are the payment method (when we went, i.e. end of November, there was no physical or manned way of buying tickets, you had to buy them through QR code scanning, and lot of people aren't accustomed with that so there was bit of a commotion there), the place closed before 5, while there was still plenty of sunlight (considering how picturesque it looked in the setting sun, they could keep it open a bit longer), there wasn't enough supervision (people were sitting on the ruins, spitting despite warnings all around).

The archeological site is situated next to the buddha temple in Sarnath. The archeological site needs every ticket by scanning the bar code at the gate. The archaeological site has remains of a buddha school with a stupa. The site is well restored but still needs renovations in terms of dedicated walk tours, an audio guide system, and medication classes. It can be more informative if the latest technologies are used to tell the stories behind the site.

One of main place to see old Remains of more than 2000 years old. Remember you can use same ticket of Sarnath Museum here, so no need to buy extra ticket. Similar way if you bough ticket here you can show this ticket to Museum also. It's a bit long walk, Highly recommend to take water bottle with you, in hot summer it will be difficult to walk.

This place is shockingly beautiful with a glorious history. It is the place where Lord Buddha taught his first lecture after attaining enlightenment at Bodh Gaya. There are well maintained ruins of the city of Sarnath. Collapsed structures are preserved in the nearby museum that you can visit. Entry tickets can be booked online and for a better understanding of the place, take a government local guide with yourself.

  • 4/5 Harish K. 1 year ago on Google
Ticket will cost @ 20.00 per person. Lots of Archaeological remains, some fragmented and some are still intact. One among them is the Ashoka Pillar. You might need a Guide for a thorough explanation about the site and the history of it. You can see group of Monks sitting, praying and chanting. Whole atmosphere gives you peace. The place is thought to be of great importance in Buddhist culture as Buddha came to Sarnath after attaining enlightenment and taught Dhamma here.

Maximum 45 min ride from Varanasi city. No need to book auto or cab for return journey. You may use Uber/Ola for both side. Rates of these apps are way less than what private auto drivers quote in Varanasi city. One of the best museums in India is located near this place

And where did u stey … if u want come to my hotel ..very good very best bla bla bla ….. and the most horrible thing was there was 2or 3 school student and make this place like picnic spot 🙄😧… they throw rappers and pprs around whole campus …. I think this was not done here na ? And no entrence check post and no tickets checked properly…. Local boys comments on foreign girls … oh my god my entire head was terrified 😶😑… so I request indian gov. This place is really well maintained. The archaeological remains are in good condition both inside and outside the museums. This remains close on Fridays, so plan your visits accordingly. There's an easy way to book the tickets, I.e., you reach there and there's a QR code ro scan and book them. There are people around who will charge you double the price of the tickets when they book it from their phones and you've to pay them in cash. Don't do that. Phonepe doesn't work there, try Gpay instead. Specially abled people may find it difficult to move across the entire site. Phones aren't allowed inside the museum, you can carry a camera if you wish to, just to click photographs; you shooting videos with it is prohibited. Try to visit it in the morning, because the weather gets really hot and humid by the afternoon. This is a must visit if you've planned to come to Varanasi.

The excavated remains of Buddhist stupas ravaged by time. It's well maintained by ASI. You have to get an online ticket that costs Rs. 25. It's a huge area along with the principal attraction that is Dhamek stupa which was built by the great Ashoka in 3rd century BCE. It has been restored by ASI to its current form. It stands tall well above 200 feet and serves as a spot for Buddhist chanting.

Great place to visit. Make sure you have at least 3 hours in your hand before visiting this place. It’s a huge campus. Opening time 9am and closing 5pm. Museum is must visit. History echoes here. Such a great place to explore.
