Nice space, OK food, waiting time is a deal breaker. Pros: nice space, polite staff (we got an apology from the chef) Cons: food looks super good but taste is so so. Nothing special in our standards. We waited for ONE HOUR to have our breakfast served, which you definitely don't want on a weekend trip to Kyoto. Prices are high for this quality and this level of service. The tea could easily have been free in other restaurants was charged ¥300 for just one small cup, no refill, even though we were sitting there waiting for one hour. There was only one staff in addition to the chef who was cleaning the dishes himself, which also explains why it took so long. Must have been stressful for them, but customers are not there to just wait for so long.

(Translated by Google) A valuable shop that has been open since the morning. Counter main. You can enjoy the quality breakfast in Kyoto. With a gentle taste and a bit of trouble, it would seem that it would have been nice to be Japanese if you took a bite of miso soup (laugh) It seems to be very popular with foreigners, and it will be full immediately after opening. It takes time for rice to come out, so it's not for those in a hurry. The seemingly higher price can be offset by the location and the deliciousness of the fish.

This breakfast place is definitely a must-try in Kyoto! By far the best breakfast I had so far - fresh ingredients and the portions are just nice! Love the creamy texture of the tamago …. 🤤🤤🤤

Very nice and upmarket Japanese style breakfast restaurant with tables and counter seats. Everything is made meticulously by hand to order, and is very detail-orientated, so give about 15-20 minutes for food preparation after ordering. It is worth it. The taste is delicious and the presentation is gorgeous. The menu is fish based with 3 sets depending on how much you want. You can get either 3 or 5 sides. You can add sashimi on the highest set. The sides are all excellent and each has its own taste. There are some options to add additional toppings to your white rice. We added chirashi sushi topping.

I’d probably give it a 2-3 star. Japanese breakfast in a stylish setting with friendly but chaotic service, small portions, and good but just ordinary, expensive food. I’d say experience it with the cheapest set for the vibes and the creamy miso soup. Fyi they do incentivize people to leave reviews. So, we came in afternoon on a weekday, so we got seated and served pretty quickly. The cooks are also your servers, and they are friendly and can speak English. The food is pretty good but not special, like it’s fish rice and pickles just like you can get anywhere in Japan. The fish was seasoned well with tender flesh and crispy skin, but the other sides were so mid. Everything is pretty small in portion (like 5 little slices of pickles, a thumb sized sweet potato—both of which I would say was lacking in flavor and attention). I would not recommend the sashimi since it’s definitely not worth the money. Later, I noticed some people who came in after us had garnishes on their fish that we didn’t. I also noticed they got miso soup, but we didn’t. I had to double check that it came with our set. We got the soup after we asked about it, but by then we had already finished our meal. Because of the open kitchen, we saw the cooks talk amongst themselves about the missing soups and watched them scrape out the last of the pot for us. It was a little awkward, but the soup was creamy and probably the best thing there. We spent almost 5000 for 2 for [late] breakfasts which is way too much for the little food and subpar service we got. I thought the concept+food+dishware was weirdly similar to Brooklyn’s OKONOMI, and it’s because they share (shared?) the same owner! Kind of sad to say that okonomi is so much better; they are warm and have amazing service and food with the same price point.

Modern and minimalist little restaurant on a quiet side street serving traditional Japanese breakfast. We each had red snapper cooked in a different way - salt, and thyme and lemon. Both were delicious and the fish was cooked to perfection with a delightfully crispy skin. The accompanying radish salad, japanese omelette, and picked veg were all equally tasty. The side bowl of miso and the rice (recommend adding the poached egg) were also great. Overall the meal was excellent and very reasonably priced. The staff are really friendly and engaging and it was a pleasure to eat here.

(Translated by Google) The setup is a bit too bad. It takes more than an hour from the time you enter the store until the food comes out. Not because the reason is crowded, but not because we can not prepare food ... There is no repeat considering the price, volume and offer time. A nice cosy place that specializes in serving Japanese breakfast in Kyoto. The breakfast features a seasonal fish (usually two choices with different preparation) with sides and rice.

Traditional Kyoto breakfast set meal, which has fresh fish, marinated vegetables, and excellent miso soup. BTW, please reserve before coming, because the restaurant is always full.

Worst food I had in the two weeks in Japan. First time I had to write a review. I had to get McDonald's after to cleanse my palette. We had to wait 40 min for a cold, cooked fish with some cold side dishes. The best was the miso soup... the plain rice was even bad. Honestly, I can cook better than this myself in 5 mins. I had high expectations because they were fully booked. I agree with the recent review that they might have pumped the review stars. Service like always was 10/10 but food a good 0/10. Beware. Don't spend your money and precious time here.

Delicious breakfast spot hidden within the neighborhood. Very nice aesthetic! Great vibes and yummy food. I loved the variety with the side dishes. For the K-pop lovers, they play some good songs as well ;) Highly recommend calling ahead to make a reservation as this place does have limited seating and is pretty popular.

Came here for breakfast to beat the crowd. They are very friendly and take time to explain the menu. You can choose from 1 fish 3 side dishes 1400 yen, 1 fish 5 dishes 2000 yen or 2 fish 5 dishes 2500 yen. Fish can be either soy sauce based. You can also upgrade your rice to corn topped rice, tuna rice bowl or red snapper rice bowl with 300-500 yen. Preparation is done right in front of you if you sit at the counter. Food is very refreshing and well balanced.. Very welcoming and worth the visit.

Ordered the Ichiju Gosai & Ichiju Gosai Niuo sets. First off, the tai sashimi was very tender, probably the best I’ve tasted. The whale meat was soft but perhaps I should've dipped it in shoyu. The Mahi mahi wasn’t dry and quite flavorful. The tamagoyaki had some honey, making it creamy and a bit sweet. The squid was tough but the umemiso, as the cherry on top, was bright, making it worth every bite. The veggies brought all forms of taste and texture, bringing the flavor wheel to a full circle. Definitely would recommend. Also had Kyoto “Kabusecha” tea which was very refreshing!

Very peaceful environment. Food was amazing and each part complimented itself. Fish was amazing and so much effort was put into the presentation as well. This is a gem. The fish and the miso were definitely the stars of the show for me. Absolutely recommend!

This is a great restaurant for your breakfast. It’s a top-quality Japanese restaurant in Kyoto for me. The food is perfect. The staff was nice. The environment is beautiful with Japanese style decoration. However, you really pay for it. It’s not a low or medium budget place. It’s an amazing place and one of the best I’ve eaten in this time that I visit Kyoto.

open kitchen specialist in fish. very local, fresh ingredients. staff are friendly, 3 people behind counter. two storeys, plays 80s american music.beautiful plating mostly female customer cons: portion are small and price are high. fhey are friendly but twice they forgot our order and since it is an open kitchen I could hear them communicating their hiccups or when they are out of certain things. The team dynamic could definitely be better. You could choose 3 or 5 side dishes and one finishes and instead on 5, they could only serve 4 side dishes with cheaper price of 1800 yen instead of 2000 yen. They did not explain this and I had to keep asking on what dishes are serve then and what are the price or compensation. 🥲 originally owned by someone in brooklyn, opened a store in kyoto and only recently change their business owner to someone who is Japanese. everything remained the same as 4 years ago from their american owner.

Amazing, fresh Japanese breakfast. We had a group of four and was told we could be sat in 45 min. So we grabbed coffee and came back. It was well worth the wait. Get everything! Seriously better than some of the 5 star hotel breakfasts I have had in Tokyo and Kyoto

An interesting breakfast/lunch place run by a Westerner chef which offers a unique take on normal Japanese food. Not what would be considered traditional Japanese, but it isn't like anything I have tasted before (including other fusion food). Definitely give it a try if you have the chance, and order the amberjack in miso sauce, not the salmon ;)

Found this spot on Google and saw the great reviews so we decided to give it a try. Made reservations for 9:00am, if you are looking to come for breakfast I would recommend making reservations as we saw multiple groups get turned away as they tried to walk-in. We each ordered the set with 3 side dishes and 2 different sashimi, and also added the corn rice option. You also get a choice of the fish options from the day, we were offered either Salt based or Soy Sauce based. The food took quite a while to arrive, we ordered at 9:05 and didn’t receive our food until 9:45. The food also came out with a few minutes gap in between so some of it sat and got cold as we were waiting for the rice. Had high hopes but was slightly disappointed, you get three side dishes which I assume vary depending on the day, but all 3 were just mediocre. Fish was also just OK, a little dry and also slightly bland, along with the corn rice which was also mediocre. Nice ambience but probably wouldn’t repeat, especially considering the price point to value.

Except us there were only tourist at the restaurant (around 5 groups) but I would recommend here both for Japanese and tourists. The style is not only authentic and traditional but also very modern that you cannot find easily with this price. Just one thing is that I didn’t really like the rice, it was missing a bit of moisture and didn’t have enough umami. Except that the dishes were unique, well balanced and tasted good.

Amazing experience in Kyoto. As a family of four we were able to try all fish types offered on the day. We loved them all! We were also surprised how much our 11 and 10 year old liked the fish as normally they are not fish fans. A great introduction to Japanese cuisine and tea pairing which was explained with each serving. Please make time for at least one breakfast here when you are in Kyoto.

Food was light and refreshing. My family really enjoyed the food. Staff was really friendly too. Would recommend be in queue early if you don't have any reservation as there are limited seats in the restaurant. Also if you're on the 2nd floor, press the bell to alert the service staff 🙂

These guys deserve recognition. Super inviting atmosphere. Food was amazing. And sitting at the bar talking with the staff, they were all extremely helpful and offered great insight on what to do, see, where to eat etc...in kyoto. Awesome spot and will be back next time I'm in town

The fish of the day seems to always be mackerel which I don't normally enjoy but theirs is pretty good. The corn rice is really delicious as is the miso soup! I was seated immediately and only had to wait about 15 mins for my food to be ready. They had mistakenly given me the standard rice but it was easily rectified when the original staff member who took my order returned. I think it's quite expensive for what it is, given that the sides are tiny and underwhelming. I'd rather have the standard grilled salmon breakfast from any other traditional shop.

Tried to dine here on Monday morning but it was packed. So tried to get a reservation through Instagram but the reply was slow. Called this morning to confirm a reservation for lunch. Got there a bit early and saw that it was less crowded. Maybe reservations are necessary for breakfast but not so for lunch. There was two choices for Today’s fish - salty or soy sauce. Soy sauce one was apparently really salty and I was glad I opted for the salty one which had no bones. Portion wise is considered small but they plate everything nicely so it’s a nice experience. I really liked the egg tofu side dish but the others weren’t that exciting for me. Seaweed rice was nice and their miso is really nice too. It’s a place to try and say I’ve been here. Maybe the sashimi is something people come back for since it was sold out.

Good breakfast experience in Kyoto. I got the ¥2200 meal which came with fish, miso soup, rice, and 5 side dishes. The food was very filling between 2 people. The staff was friendly and helpful. I recommend making reservation if you want to eat during morning hours (8-11am). You can use Google translate to communicate.

I have managed to sit without reservation. Considering myself lucky, I was very pleased with simple and clean interior design. You can find cute details, such as mussels used as hashioki. The food was served absolutely beautifully. A colorful composition which every piece was described to me by a cook who seemed to be the owner as well (?). As I understood, everyday you are served something else. It was one of the best breakfasts I had in Japan and would love to come back one day.

By chance, I found the beautiful Lorimer Kyoto that serves amazing washoku, including ichiju sansai (one soup, three side dishes), ichiju gosai (one soup, five side dishes), and ichiju gosai niuo (one soup, five side dishes and two sashimi). I went here yesterday and came back for today’s lunch. I am allergic to shellfish, hence they made me a very lovely kinoko (mushroom) stirfry. Their pickles are amazing and the tamago yaki is so soft, like chawan mushi. Completely vegan/vegetarian dishes are available with prior booking ; though most of their okazu (side dishes) are vegan or vegetarian anyway. Totally recommended for Japanese cuisine aficionados!

  • 5/5 EDITH T. 1 year ago on Google
Super cute place with very nice staff. The kitchen is in front of you so you can watch them make your food. We ordered two sets including one with a side of sashimi. As expected, the fish was very fresh and this felt like a very healthy breakfast. The little side dishes they served with the rice (which tasted great by itself) made a nice accompaniment. Overall, very satisfying experience. :)

We came here for traditional Japanese breakfast. Arrived at opening (8am), 5 minutes later the shop was full. If you plan to go here, I suggest doing a reservation. Many folks wanted to dine here but were turned away. Food itself is tasty and diverse but expensive. I suggest this and similar places to experience traditional breakfast once but not as a regular dining location since 2500¥ later I was still hungry.

(Translated by Google) I was disturbed before the self-restraint period! It takes a long time for the food to come out, but all were simple and carefully made and delicious. I think it's just the right size if you don't eat from the morning. However, as other people have written, the impression is that it is a foreign-first store. There were only foreigners in front of the first counter, and only Japanese people were on the second floor. The first floor is very lively. The part-timer who served you? Woman explained to me about the food, but when I heard it too quickly, I heard an open face. This also made me feel uncomfortable. It's a pity that the food was reasonable.

This one is truly a hidden gem. Stumbled upon this place by accident and luckily at their more quieter time. The dishes were prepared with care and pride. The staff are friendly, the vibe is somehow both chilled, relaxed and zen. Food wise, the combination and composition of each element on the dish was intentional, well thought, and delicious (especiallygiven the price point!). Defs a favorite.

Wonderful Japanese restaurant for lunch (or breakfast if eating fish in the morning is your thing). The menu is simple: all you choose is whether you want the small or the big course. Both include miso soup, rice, fish fillet and either three or five side dishes. Which fish and side dishes you get depends on the day. We had pickled vegetables, tofu with black sesame, and others that were harder to identify. The miso soup is delicious, and the fish perfectly cooked. Although the restaurant is run by a single person, we got our food pretty fast.

What an amazing place. The food was very good and the presentation is beautiful. The staff is super friendly and the atmosphere is awesome. I went on a Friday morning at around 9:30 and was able to get a seat a the bar. Sit at the bar if you can so you can see the staff work on constructing the dishes. I took the fish meal with 5 sides and added a runny egg to my rice. Next time I will add the butter corn because it looked like heaven. Thank you for the experience.

Trendy space in a cute neighborhood to get Japanese breakfast. They were sold out of sashimi so we had limited options, but the food was amazing nonetheless! Didn’t have a similar experience to other reviewers who said they couldn’t get in—we walked in on a Thursday morning around 10:30 am and we were the only people there. That said, it got busier around 11:30 am but there was still no one waiting. Had the option of salt or soy sauce for the fish. I opted for sauce and my bf got salt. I would recommend salt as the sauce option was a bit too dry for my liking.

Certainly! Here's your experience translated into English: Following a friend's recommendation, I arrived in Kyoto with high expectations for my first meal. We had made a phone reservation in advance, but upon arrival, it seemed that our booking couldn't be found. Nonetheless, the staff kindly allowed us to dine in. The service was a bit slow, taking about 20-30 minutes for dishes to arrive. The sashimi was somewhat thin, but the rice and grilled fish were quite good. Personally, I think Ichiju Sansai was the best choice. The onsen egg and grilled fish rice ball were also quite tempting…

A beautiful space with bland food. More “show“ than “know-how“. I was looking forward a lot to eating here, but ended up extremely disappointed and dissatisfied leaving the restaurant. It‘s definitely a place that specifically caters towards tourists and foreigners. The food is rather simple, which can be nice, but then the quality must be top notch, which I didn‘t think was the case here. Not even the rice was very good. On top of that I found some kind of worm/parasite in my fish. I like humble japanese food, but then it must be the real deal, no pretentiousness and fuss around it. Overrated and overpriced for what you get.

(Translated by Google) Passing by one night, I was attracted by the sense of decoration design, so I searched for the dishes, wrote down the address, and decided to try it one morning. The grilled fish breakfast meals are extremely attentive. The dining atmosphere and environment are very lazy and comfortable. It is suitable for a big breakfast. The main course grilled fish dish definitely deserves the "perfect" review. The skin is crispy and the fish is tender and juicy. The side dishes are either sour or sweet, and the delicate fragrance neutralizes the rich flavor of grilled fish dishes. The staple food was replaced with grilled rice balls. The crispy surface and the soft fragrant rice inside blended perfectly with grilled fish and side dishes, each performing its duties well. The decoration and music experience of the shopkeepers have the attitude of the shopkeepers. You can swipe your card and communicate fluently in English. May need to wait, but it's worth the wait, it's definitely worth it.

(Translated by Google) The rice is very well-balanced, carefully made and of a high level. It is rare to find a store that offers the seasoning and ingredients at this price. The food is irresistible, but if the timing isn't right, it's a very long wait, and some shops take it for granted. Recommended only for those who have time and physical strength. (Some people sit side by side and cooking is too careful and takes a long time, so many people do not return their smiles even if they start eating rice.)

(Translated by Google) Delicious. The staff is more polite. Recommended from the morning when you want to eat properly and firmly, and I would like to go again if there is an opportunity. It was a room without meals, so I wanted to have a delicious breakfast nearby and visited for two consecutive days. At the counter main shop It seems that many people can come by one or two people. Not only during consecutive holidays, but also on weekdays The staff also felt very busy during the holidays. (I didn't wait in good time, Breakfast, so unless it's a peak or a group No one stays long, It seems that you can put it in after waiting a while. However, during the consecutive holidays, the staff also It seems busy and difficult. ) There are two main menus, Choose from 3 or 5 side dishes, Also, depending on the day, it seems that there are options that are not usually available. For example, upgrade rice to pickled rice. I didn't know how to switch the menu I went out without stopping for the third day It is recommended when you want to start a good day with a delicious breakfast.

(Translated by Google) Eating breakfast here makes the day very meaningful. This is a restaurant specializing in breakfast. The menu that makes the most of the taste of the ingredients, rather than the originality, is French-like. The location is Rokujo Hashizume, and if you are taking a train, the nearest station is Gojo Station on the Karasuma Subway Line. Favorite breakfast in Kyoto. Simple yet very delicious. There is only one type of menu with 2 choices of fish, the fish was very fresh and well cooked. It feels so much like home, we were seated in a bar stool facing the chefs while watching them preparing our food. A nice breakfast experience and surely a must-revisit breakfast place in Kyoto. P.s. it’s not far from walden woods coffee, probably can visit this trendy coffee shop too while you’re around!

Loved the breakfast at Lorimer! Tucked away in a small street, the space is pretty cozy. We had the onigiri instead of rice, grilled fish and five sides. What made this place great for me was the care put into simple dishes. Service is also great, we sat at the counter and could chat with the chefs comfortably. The dishes served were interesting and while a little pricey, overall would say Lorimer is worth a visit.

It is a place which indeed knows it fish. But when told i didn't eat fish the cook was very accommodating and used Google translate to make sure he knew exactly what he could serve. I am vegetarian so I got tofu and egg and it was all really well prepared. Pros: Cook makes sure he knows exactly what to sure, Good vibe Cons: The food takes a minute to make, but worth it.
