Malaysian Garam Masala

Restaurant Malaysian restaurant

👍 As a Singaporean, I first doubted the authenticity of the neighbouring Malaysian cuisine served here, due to the dubious naming of the restaurant and the extremely “diverse” options on the menu. However, after learning that the owner is indeed a Malaysian himself, I knew I had to give them a chance.... People often mention chicken, good, curry, mutton, restaurant, friendly, roti,

Food is pretty good. Reasonably priced. The front entrance looks pretty ghetto as it's not very clean and frankly don't open wide enough. Going inside, the lights are a bit dim. Foodwise, it's pretty good and has some unique flavors. The chef I'm told is Malaysian, the cashier who's also a helper seems Filipino. The mee goeng noodles are pretty good. Quite flavourful. The mutton curry portions are quite good.. a little gamey but ok. The chicken pakora is ok too.. though the chicken pieces varied in size. Price to portions to flavors, it's not bad.

As a Singaporean, I first doubted the authenticity of the neighbouring Malaysian cuisine served here, due to the dubious naming of the restaurant and the extremely “diverse” options on the menu. However, after learning that the owner is indeed a Malaysian himself, I knew I had to give them a chance. To test it out, I went ahead with the Roti Canai/Prata option, along with a side of chicken curry (default combo back home). I was surprised that at a price of $3 (Egg) + $1.50 (Plain) + $2.50 for curry, I did get taken back home with the very authentic crispiness, slight flakiness and flavoursome curry burst in my mouth. With the dimly lit interior and slightly outdated furniture stacked inside, the sight of the eatery might not be aesthetically pleasing to many but don’t let that fool you from the food that is served here. Dining-in is not an option at the moment, so I got to take-out with some disposable plates provided by the friendly lady who took my order and handled the cashier. Nevertheless, the strong stench that I suspect to be coming from the adjacent fish & meat store, can be extremely overpowering. It’s such a pity that the restaurant has to face the end of the strong stench, despite them serving some aromatic flavoursome food. I will definitely return to try their Mee Goreng and other Malaysian dishes in the near future, when I am in the area. I strongly hope that the issue of the stench gets fixed and dining in becomes an option by then, the latter being my only reason for not giving it 5 starts.

Very very very strong flavours! Tasted ok! the restaurant smells bad- not sure if it’s due to the fish stall next to it or the restaurant itself. Lost my appetite after going in there for take away.! The couple who owns and serve there are very sweet. The 3 stars are only for that…

We have been to this place 2 years back approx.. Food quality n taste was way better back then.. Ordered take out from this place yesterday and found it quite disappointing.. 😑 We had Chilli Chicken gravy (not in usual chinese style though, chicken was hard, no enough gravy for the complimentary rice given), Mutton Murtabak (mutton did not smell good), Chilli Chicken Kothu Parotta (Good enough). Overall, I would say it was okay.

Love this place. Fantastic, fresh food at probably the most reasonable price. Please don’t expect chicken to be cooked to perfection at 165 degrees, it’s a cheap, fast eatery so evaluate it at that standard. What’s important is that the two key people the older gentleman and the asian lady are very friendly and hard working and put passion into the food. I can’t recommend this place enough.

I've been here dozens of times and they never disappoint. I highly recommend their chicken curry and garlic chicken. You can eat inside, but most people order takeout.

Would return and would recommend their curry, want to return and try their fried rice and chilli chicken. We had the Curry Mutton and Chicken Kothu Roti Service was excellent! The chef in the back was impressive! The Curry was legit (not from a can or form powder curry). The flavours were intense, the mutton flavour was strong! It was a bit too much for my GF but she recognized and appreciated the authenticity of intense flavour curry. The Chicken Kothu Roti had good “wok hay”, eventhing nicely browned and coated with stir-fry flavour. Price was extremely reasonable. $15pp before tip (2 dishes and 2 orders of roti)

Small restaurant but excellent food. Went there late night on NYE. Was a little sceptical but the sweet lady at the restaurant made us feel warm and at home. We ordered Johnny wrap..mutton curry with parotha..chicken murtabak.. chicken kothu..chilli chicken kothu and mutton roll. Everything was delicious especially the mutton curry. A must visit in Scarborough.

The best late night spot for wholesome food! I regularly find myself here at midnight grabbing a JOHNNY WRAP. The chicken chow mein is solid ! If you like spicy food definitely recommend.

Went in at 1230am for a mutton murtabak. Was fantastic. Reminded me of kuala lampur. Highly recommended.

The Johnny wrap (chili chicken in a roti shell) is fantastic. Slightly spicy with bursts of garlic and ginger in a nice buttery roti. Make sure that the roti shell is freshly made as I ordered this once and the roti was very stale, but the chicken is absolutely delicious. The lady is always friendly with me and a pleasure to chat with. I wish they had longer hours that extend into the lunch hours. Online ordering is available, but not always. My biggest gripe with them is that they don't seem to answer their phone.

Other day got some guest who flew for 24+ hours to Toronto and only this place was open after 1 am in the morning. We did dine in and probably we stayed there till 2 am till we figure where my guests could stay for the night since the airbnb host they booked decided not to respond! Owner and his wife were so friendly and made a spicy kothu for us....😊 I think I owe few cents to them for the water bottle...lol

First time here, ordered a veggie kothu roti with egg and it was great! First time trying Malaysian style kothu and I was very surprised because it was so unique. The lady at the front is also very sweet.

Just so good. I've been coming here for years. The couple who own this restaurant are so kind and friendly and always make amazing food. I love their shrimp pakora and their Manchurian fried rice but honestly everything I've tried has been delicious. This place is so good and you need to check it out if you haven't already.

Go to Scarborough spot for late night eats. Unfortunately the prices have gone drastically up due to inflation but that doesn’t change the fact that the food is great, quality never changed. Service always A1. Go to order is Chicken Red Rice and a Johnny Wrap. Can’t go wrong.
