The Französischer Dom, also known as the French Cathedral, is an impressive architectural gem located on Gendarmenmarkt square in the heart of Berlin. It is one of three significant buildings that grace this picturesque square, along with the German Cathedral and the Konzerthaus. The Französischer Dom was built in the 18th century as a Huguenot church, serving as a place of worship for the French-speaking Protestant community in Berlin. The cathedral's design is a testament to the elegant and symmetrical style of the era, with its impressive dome, grand facade, and intricate details. Today, the cathedral stands as a prominent landmark and a cultural center in Berlin. Its interior features stunning frescoes, beautiful stained glass windows, and a graceful spiral staircase that leads to an observation platform offering panoramic views of the city. In addition to its architectural beauty, the Französischer Dom is also home to the Huguenot Museum, which provides insights into the history and culture of the Huguenot community in Berlin. The museum's exhibits showcase artifacts, documents, and stories that highlight the struggles and contributions of this influential community. The cathedral's location on Gendarmenmarkt square adds to its allure. The square itself is regarded as one of the most beautiful in Berlin, surrounded by neoclassical buildings and adorned with a central statue of German poet Friedrich Schiller. The Französischer Dom's presence contributes to the square's harmonious and captivating atmosphere. Whether you visit for its historical and cultural significance, to appreciate its architectural splendor, or simply to soak in the tranquil ambience of Gendarmenmarkt, the Französischer Dom offers a memorable experience. It serves as a reminder of Berlin's diverse heritage and stands as a testament to the city's appreciation for art, history, and religious tolerance.

There are two activities in the French Cathedral (three if you count eating at the deftly named Hugo & Notte cafe). One can visit the museum to learn about Huguenotes and the church, and there is a separate ticket to go up about 280 stairs to the observation platform. The walk up to the platform is quite comfortable because it is a modern staircase with a plenty of space to rest. I'd say it is not for the people with a fear of heights, not just because, obviously, the observation platform, but also because the stairs open to the empty space inside a tall tower as you climb. It is a beautiful tower. On the platform, there are plaques showing which landmark you can see in the respective direction. The platform is fairly wide and has benches to rest on, and the cafe in fact offers picnic baskets to take upstairs. The views are phenomenal. Note that the museum ticket is separate from the observation platform.

A beautiful piece of architecture. This church is located next to Gengarmenmarkt. The reception is free to visit but it costs 6,5 euros to get up to the dome. I think it's worth it because you get a panoramic view over the city and it is not packed with tourists.

The French Church is one of three fine buildings on Gendarmenmarkt. While the dome is not technically part of the church, it's often treated as such and I had the pleasure of both seeing the dome from Gendarmenmarkt and visiting the church for an organ concert. The dome is a very beautiful Neoclassical in the shape of a monopteros containing sculptures of classical figures and topped with a figure of I think the personification of peace holding an olive branch. A fine dome.

An eye-catching cathedrals you can see in Europe, specially its outside view. We went to Berlin in christmas holidays and unfortunately it was closed therefore we couldn't visit its inside. During the christmas holidays the set up an outdoor marketplace for foods, drinks, clothes and etc. which was really amazing. I think it is worth to visit this cathedral and its neighborhood while you are in Berlin.

This is a review of the viewing platform of the church, rather than the Huguenot Museum within the church. We visited on a cold February lunchtime and had the place to ourselves. The climb is quite easy as the stairs are wide and open so there is no feeling of being cramped. The architecture inside is as beautiful as the outside appearance and the whole building exudes elegance without extravagance. As you climb there are information boards and then eventually you reach the door to walk around the outside of the tower. As you'd expect, the views were great and it was a lovely way to spend a lunch break.

An interesting piece of architecture. Currently it is undergoing construction and is surrounded by a fence, however there is a pop up viewing platform next to it that allows a good view of it.

The French (Reformed) Church of Friedrichstadt (French: Temple de la Friedrichstadt, German: Französische Friedrichstadtkirche, and commonly known as Französischer Dom, meaning "French Cathedral") is located in Berlin at the Gendarmenmarkt, across the Konzerthaus and the German Cathedral. The earliest parts of the church date back to 1701, although it was subsequently expanded. After being heavily damaged during World War II, the church was rebuilt and continues to offer church services and concerts.

Beautiful place. The French Dom was erected by French Protestants (Huguenots) fleeing France in the 17th and 18th century. Inside it is not so special, rather beautiful from outside.

This is actually very close to the Konzerthaus Berlin, and there is another domes building right across. These are the main venue for concerts in Berlin we did not get to see it from the inside because it was closed when we got there, but you can still appreciate the beautiful architecture of these buildings.

Französischer Dom is one of two similar churches at Gendarmenmarkt along with Deutscher Dom. It is located at the northern end of the square and is an attractive building to see in Berlin. This church was built by Louis Cayart and Abraham Quesney (1701-1705) and was modelled after Huguenot church in Charenton, France. The tower and dome was added between 1780-85 by Carl von Gontard, who also built the Deutscher Dom at the same time, hence their identical appearance. When visiting Gendarmenmarkt, one can't help but notice the general symmetry between Französischer Dom and Deutscher Dom. However, they are not twin churches and have noticeable differences in the facade and portico area of the church front if you look at both buildings closely. Französischer Dom was heavily damaged during WWII and not rebuilt until 1977 to 1981. Today, its no longer used for religious purposes. There is a small Huguenot Museum, assembly hall and archives within. Note: During the annual Christmas Market at Gendarmenmarkt, we found Französischer Dom lit up at night time and quite attractive to see.

It's probably a bit odd to consider a landmark with almost a thousand reviews a hidden gem, but the viewing platform really does feel like an insider's tip for all visitors to the city. Or maybe I'm just saying that because it was my own first view of Berlin from above. Either way, if you're an acquaintance of mine and I catch wind of your visit to this corner of the world, I'm probably taking you here. You're welcome.

(Translated by Google) The Französischer Dom (French cathedral) is not a cathedral in the strict sense, although the large dome, added to the church in 1785, almost a century after its construction, suggests a place of worship, which was in fact its original function . Initially called Französische Friedrichstadtkirche (French church in Friedrichstadt), the building was erected in 1672 by the Huguenots, members of the Reformed Churches of France and also known as "French Protestants". After suffering persecution and having been formally expelled from France with the edict of Fontainebleau of 1685, 6000 Huguenots had in fact obtained permission from the Elector Prince of Brandenburg Frederick III (since 1701 Frederick I in Prussia) to settle in Berlin; right that was formally enshrined in the edict of Potsdam. Here they had created a vital community, preserving the use of the French language in religious services. This use was abandoned in favor of the German in 1806, as a protest against Napoleon's invasion of Prussia.

(Translated by Google) I had hoped for more of the location as a concert venue. This is probably due to the magnificent exterior of the cathedral. The room was much smaller than expected, but much of the sound was swallowed up. The seating is a disaster: chairs uncomfortable and not offset. As a result, we could unfortunately hardly see anything from the 4th row on the side. Disappointing! Room temperature for a concert very pleasant, we had set ourselves to "church cold". The lighting is very bright (not in a good sense) and was rather uncomfortable even during the classical concert. On a Friday evening we were able to park directly on the sidewalk in front of the building for the regular parking ticket. It was unexpected and straightforward.

(Translated by Google) One of the most beautiful historical sights of Berlin is the French Cathedral, located at Gendarmenmarkt. Its majesty and beauty attract many visitors to the German capital. The history of the creation of this architectural monument is quite interesting and unusual. The beginning of the existence of the French Cathedral The name "French" Cathedral received, as it was originally conceived as a church for Huguenots - refugees from France. Their number at the beginning of the 18th century was about a quarter of all inhabitants of Berlin. The building cannot be truly called a cathedral, since during its entire existence there was no episcopal see in it. The design and construction of the church was undertaken by two famous architects at that time: Abraham Kesney and Louis Caillard. The once destroyed Huguenot temple in Charenton-Saint-Maurice in France was chosen as the prototype of the architectural ensemble for the construction of the French Cathedral. The construction lasted for five years, from 1701 to 1705. Another name for the French Cathedral is the Friedrichstadt Church. This name was given to the Huguenot Church for a simple reason: previously, the territory on which it is located belonged to a separate city - Friedrichstadt. But later, in 1709, Frederick I decided that the town would henceforth be part of Berlin. Transfigurations of the French Cathedral In 1785, the authorities decided that the French Cathedral should be called a church. That is why the German architects Karl von Gontard and Georg Christian Unger were commissioned to build a dome with a tower. After that, the building began to resemble the Gendarmenmarkt, located on the same square, the German Cathedral, giving the space some symmetry. A significant difference from the building of the German Cathedral is that in this building the tower and the church are not a single whole, there is not even a passage between them. The second decade of the 19th century was marked by the joining of the community of the French Church to the single Evangelical Church of all Prussia. Calvinists, Reformists, and Lutherans could either adopt a common name or retain their previous name. The parishioners of the French community decided to keep their Calvinist identity. But the traditions of the Lutheran congregation nevertheless gradually penetrated into Calvinism. Therefore, in 1817, an organ of excellent quality appeared in the cathedral, in addition to the traditional psalms, religious hymns were also performed. It is worth noting that, in addition to many well-known organ musicians, the famous Thomas Hawks played the instrument. In 1905, the interior of the French Cathedral changed somewhat: some decorative additions were introduced to its asceticism and severity, which made the church more beautiful from the inside. Otto March worked on this transformation, he managed to organically combine decorativeness in the interior of the building with a style that excludes the presence of icons. Post-war revival of the building The Second World War did not spare many buildings and structures in Berlin. The French Cathedral also suffered from the bombing and shelling. The building suffered significant damage. But the restoration and restoration of the church on the Gendarmenmarkt waited only in the 80s of the XX century. From 1977 to 1988, restoration work was going on, and now the French Cathedral has gained its original appearance, shone with new colors and pleases both parishioners and tourists with its splendor. From 2004 to 2006, the facade of the cathedral was reconstructed. The authorities spent about 6 million EUR on this. Of the sixty bells, eighteen have been replaced or repaired. In August 2006, the French Cathedral was reopened to visitors. Currently, the French Cathedral is not only the venue for the cathedrals of the Evangelical Church throughout Germany, but also one of the most significant sites related to architectural monuments. An observation deck is open for tourists in the tower with a dome that was once built by Gontard and Unger. From here you can view the historic center of Berlin in all its glory. EUR.

The church is open only in Sunday and you can only see the viewer area at the top which is also no that impressive. Overall my experience is bad and would not recommend others.

Nice plaza with the Französischer and Deutscher Dom that do look almost identical. The exibitions in both are really interesting.

I mean, it's two symmetrical churches and a square between them. I guess it's pretty and famous. Nothing too special honestly.

It will be amazing when the constructions are over, but if you overlook that the skyline of Berlin is beautiful and worth the climb!
