Weltenburg Abbey is a hidden gem! Its 1000-year-old charm, stunning interiors, and breathtaking paintings are awe-inspiring. Don't miss the river cruise and nearby walking trails. Relax by the scenic river shore. A perfect retreat!

Photography conditions: around 10:00 to 11:30 there was a worship service, so you can't enter the church. I took my photos at 11:44, which was perfect, with backlighting on the high altar with St George and the dragon. I came back around 17:00 and there was no more backlight and it looked too dark. Sunday 2023-04-30 The high altar of Weltenburg Abbey church depicts St George defeating the dragon and saving the princess. Similar to Rohr Abbey, which was also designed by the Asam brothers, the altar is backlit by a window for dramatic effect.

Weltenburg Abbey is a beautiful place at a distance of about one hour from Munich, Germany. A river passing through it, adds to its beauty. It has lot of viewing spots on the hills in near vicinity. It is good place for tourists for spending complete day.

The boat trip to Weltenburg was fun. 40 min to get there and 20 min to return to Kelheim. Around 13 euros 2 way trip per person. Boats available every 1 hour. We went on Monday (May 23, 2022). I wish they accept credit cards in the boat. Only cash :(. Beer was delicious. The tour was fun 🤩

Weltenburg Abbey Visited on 23/9/2019 Our coach is parked at the foothill, and our group is transferred to smaller buses to the Abbey. Weltenburg is the oldest monastery in Bavari, situated near the entrance to the scenic Danube gorge. The church, dedicated to St George, within the compound is of baroque style. In fact, the guest house run by the Abbey is called the St George Guesthouse. The aroma of the cakes baking the in oven is too irresistible, and attract us to check out cafe. The abbey brewery is the oldest abbey brewery still in operation in the world, and the products are on sale. My friend buys a 5 litre Keg of Weltenburger Kloster Anno 1050 beer intends to be drunk when we depart Germany in a few days time. We then take a stroll along the river bank at the far end of the compound.

Situated on the banks of the Danube, this Benedictine monastery brings with it the history of religion and the history of the oldest brewery. You will be pleasantly impressed by the landscape, architecture, history, gastronomy. From a few meters you can take a boat that will take you on a short cruise on the Danube. In the courtyard of the monastery is the terrace of the restaurant where you can have a feast or cool off with a local beer. Outside the church there is a museum, an old brewery and if you walk along the tourist route you will be able to visit a Roman archeological site, a wonderful church on the hill and other beauties that you will discover for yourself. Enjoy!

What an amazing place!!! I have lived in Germany twice now and am so disappointed that I never came here before! The beer is fantastic and the food in the restaurant is some of the best around. I live only an hour from here and am planning on coming back regularly!!

I don't know what I can add that hasn't already been posted. A thousand-year-old. Abby is something you want to visit. The museum isn't very big but the cathedral is awesome. And if you like beer even a little bit this is a place to have one!

Last time I was here was 20years ago definitely alot more people come here now then back then. I don't recommend the big boat it's crowded and not nearly as nice as hiking through the forest trails you encounter very few ppl and the hike is beautiful as the forest is old and has little bits of history within to discover. There is a small boat called Zille that will take us across the river for alot less $$ this same boat will also take you half way down the river on the way back to access a different trail. Weltenburg itself is a beautiful monastery beer is great food is good to but it's def become a tourist place it's not as good as it used to be. Church is still very beautiful.

Really pretty, everything’s closed for corona but it was still cool to see. I’m sure in the summer it’s very nice. It was also very flooded during our visit. Otherwise very clean and well kept.

Wonderful place, it seems to be in a fairy tale... The boats, the river Donau and the cliffs, the impressive monastery, the brewery, the wide valley... sit down near the river and admire the unique 1st Bayern National Park.

Very attractive landscape with paths for hiking and enjoying the nature. The church for sure was more incredible inside than it’s exterior.

Beautiful abbey secluded on the Danube river. Church built in Baroque style and architecture and paintings done by brothers... who put themselves into the art at the dome. See if you can find them!

Visited the Abbey. Watched a 30 minute video on the history, small museum attached. An open air beer garden and a hotel inside the walls. The church is breathtaking. Active Abbey with seven monks still working/praying.

Visiting the world's oldest operating brewery and monastery is a worthwhile and underrated joy. The well-preserved church building has some amazing metalwork, sculpture, and painting to rival the most well-known cathedrals in Europe. The biergarten was wonderful, with great service, delicious food, and outstanding beer. There are plenty of places to relax and be at peace or sit with family and enjoy. The museum is small, and the brewery tours are usually booked out. Dog friendly paths and at the biergarten. Did not see wheelchair accessibility everywhere or to the church entrance.

What a great day trip. Walking a lot the Danube and get a beer! This hike is nice along the Danube. There is an incline that was difficult for some in our party, but very doable. Crossing the river to get to the monastery is about 2€. And the boat ride back to town is about €9. Enjoyable day

Beautiful place to visit. There is a nice hiking area. The church is very old and very beautiful. The Biergarten has a nice bier on tap. Food was just ok, but bier must try. There is a nice well priced gift store. You can take a boat right from there. Parking is about 5-10 min walk from the place €4.50 all day.

Beautiful place on the Danube. you can easily reach it by boat from Kelheim. Church to visit as well as the brewery where you will find an excellent beer... the oldest brewery in the world... good and affordable food. The walk from the cliff across the river gives you a great view of the abbey.

Beautiful monastery, unfortunatly it misses some onsite information for historical interested visitors.

Definitely worth a visit! One of the most spectacular churches I have seen. Also, a fun atmosphere at the 'pub' where you can have a beer from the world's oldest monastery brewery.

Beautiful place to visit. Good foodprocessor, good beer, but also beautiful church to see. The trip with the boat from Kelheim is a must!

Must see/do, if you are in the Region Kelheim/Regensburg: have a Beer and a pair of white sausages with Pretzel at the famous Monastery 👍🤩

Good place to visit. Rich history and the ride with the ship was good with beautiful scenery

A wonderful monastery! Start in Kelheim via ship and it will be even more impressive, especially in October when the leaves are changing. There is a restaurant in the monastery which is pretty but very(!) Tourist focused - so don't expect too much. Better just have a drink (Weltenburg is the oldest monastery brewery in the world) and eat somewhere else.

Beautiful church, the wall and ceiling paintings are breathtaking. I was speechless. There was a lady introducing the architecture and history of the church in German (yeah, unfortunately) but all in all, it's worthy to visit

I must say this Kloster had been an amazing trip for me. Not far from Munich, one hour drive and you will reach there. Frome there you can hike up hill or you can take a boat ride to different cities. No to forget one of the great dark beer they offer. We drank beer on a boat ride which was great. Cold dark beer from Kloster with some of the amazing view from Danube and Gorges, what else do you need. When you reach Kloster you have a free parking place but you need be there but early if you are traveling on the weekends. Inside Kloster there is a beautiful church to visit.
