This will easily take at least 1/2 day to explore, even a whole day if you want to see everything properly. The first changing of the guard is at 10am and I believe it is worth coming early for. There’s also an English tour at 11am and I strongly recommend attending this; the tour guides are very informative, knowledgeable and give you all you need to know in 1 hour. Can leave at anytime, and best of all it’s free! The other notable place while your here that’s worth checking out is the national folklore museum. Contains various exhibitions relating to Korean culture and history, lots of explanations are English which is helpful. There is a cafe inside which is handy and leads me to my only small criticism. As it’s a historical palace and they do everything to maintain its tradition, besides the cafe in the museum there isn’t a lot of food/drink options, so I highly recommend you bring a bag or backpack and pack some food and drinks. There are restaurants outside the palace, i think they do let you back in so long as you retain your ticket. If you only visit one palace in Seoul, this is the one to do. Arguably Seoul’s most iconic and important attraction and landmark.

Very large impressive palace complex! The free English tour was really nice - the guide was informative and entertaining. Free entry if you wear hanbok - we didn't, but it is we fun to see everyone dressed up!

I cant believe how gorgeous this place is! This experience was worth every penny. The structures are stunning and beauty follows you at every turn. I could go for a week and still now see enough if this. Mind you I'm a real big fan of historical architecture and Asian History.. so it was a BIG WIN for me to come here. The museum attached to it is also stunning and super informative!! I'll be going back one more time before I leave. They have tour guide if you need them and they will explain everything and answer any questions you have!! What an experience for me!!

One of the finest (must visit) places in Seoul to witness ancient/historical times of Korean history and culture! Very well maintained. Easily accessible from metro station. Loved walking around the palace premises and witness the historical vibes. It feels so good to be here if you’re a history loving person!

Worth a visit because of its cultural significance and cheap entry cost, but otherwise it's very large without much shade, and there is no way to buy water inside, forcing you to leave. There is no re-entry allowed. You could spend all day here and probably not see all of it, so I recommend you do some research beforehand to focus on the areas you'd like to see. We walked over 6km. BRING WATER.

Amazing palace complex that you need at least 2 hours to get through. Opens at 9am. Costs 3000KW to get in, pay at the booth inside the main gate. Make sure to catch the changing of the guard (we saw this at 10am) inside the main gate - you don’t need a ticket for this. Free English guided tours start at 11am. There’s also a cool free virtual reality activity that lasts a couple of minutes through the second gate.

A beautiful Palace! We came for the changing of the guard and decided to get tickets to walk around the grounds. It was like $7 for the three of us to go. The grounds are huge! There are so many things to check out and take pictures of.

This palace is interesting and fun for people who love to learn about history and also see the historical sites. You can also see the beautiful traditional architecture they used and all the big and small rooms in the palace. Make sure to get the audio guide if you would prefer to slowly walk at your own pace. Otherwise just the entrance ticket is very affordable. Or you can get a hanbok from nearby and enter for free. The palace is very very big, so try to go early if you wanna walk through all the parts. They have a beautiful lake pagoda which you should visit. It is in lots of Korean drama. Toilet might be a little far out, so if you walked pass one, make sure to go. Came during winter and it is very quiet and peaceful. There were not a lot of tourists or crowd. We could stroll at our own pace and it was an enjoyable day.

Pretty good. One of the best historical royal palaces in Seoul. It is spacious, clean, tranquil and pristine. A beautiful place to explore and take photos. Visitors can dress up in traditional garb called hanbok that can be rented from outside the palace. Great for the "I've been there" photos. scenic

I chose to go on a really cold day 😂 But it's a pretty place. Coming from India we are used to seeing huge palaces but this one looks rather cozy :) They have free guided tour at specific timings. I got it at 13.30 in English. That was really nice, the tour guide Suyon was really sweet, she took her time in explaining about the culture and the palace . There is a pond , water was frozen and it looked surreal. I am sure the spring and autumn would be prettier :)

This was a beautiful area to walk around and learn some Korean history. The ticket price was very reasonable. We rented hanboks for the day, so admission was free. The ground were lovely and expansive. Rent an audio tour or just peacefully enjoy the palace. Of all the palaces in Seoul, this is the main one and a must.

Labyrinthine maze of pavilions and structures forming a lovely insular compound of sorts. Each building and wall appears to be more beautiful than the last. If you’re visiting, plan for large crowds of people (especially if you’re visiting at midday), and be prepared to spend an hour here to fill up your camera roll.

Bought tickets there & they weren’t very expensive. Wasn’t too crowded. This was really cool to see & walk around. I do wish they had more signs explaining what things were, but I’m guessing they probably want you to do a guided tour. Definitely worth a visit!

Very ordinary and simple palace. Reflects the lives of Korean monarchs who did not have much grandeur and fan fare as you would expect from European or Indian palaces. Good history lessons though. People try and make this trip more fun by renting and posing with traditional hanbok which is quite cumbersome if you have to walk miles inside the palace compounds.

Incredible experience! Highly recommended! In middle of a city full of skyscrapers and modernism, you step into the ancient Korea! The traditional palace architecture and those beautiful colors will take you to another universe! I recommend you to visit it in the noon when they have the soldiers exchange ceremony which is super cool! :)

This place is really crowded but enormous at the same time. Important to remember is that you need to move out from spots where tourists flock and you will definitely find the best spots. Really great place but I wouldn't recommend going here dressed in hanbok during winter. (apologies, no good landscape pictures as we went here for portraits :D)

We had the privileged to be toured for free during our visit! They were teenagers who were volunteering as tour guides. It was offered to us after we bought our tickets. They were nice and explained the important features of the palace. It took us around 1.5 hrs to see the whole palace with tour guide. The palace is huge and buildings are rebuilded. We were also able to see the changing of guard ceremony in the afternoon which is very nice to witness. There were many people and the weather was very cold and windy when we visited.

Large palace and square. A few constructions however, but generally very nice. Always cool to the the residence of highly honoured people. One can even dress up as one of them. The clothes are very colorful - perfect opportunity for pictures. Even the subway stop is beautifully designed to fit the themes of the palace. The area enclosing this palace is a little hard to identify, one can easily exit the place without knowing and can't return either.

Must See when in Seoul! This is the largest of palaces, and is really the historic soul of Korea! As said many times, you can rent traditional hanboks (if that’s your thing)…3k won for an adult ticket, well worth the price. We arrived on a Saturday at opening, had no issue driving up from south of Seoul. Lots of history over the 500 year dynasty, and the rebuilt and restored palace is yet another display of a proud and resilient Korean people who have endured hardship time and again and come back better and stronger than ever. Come learn some great history during a time when Europeans still thought the world was flat!!

The Gyeongbokgung palace is well maintained. Entrance is free, If you visit the palace wearing the Korean dress "Hanbok". I highly recommend anyone visiting Korea to visit the palace. But don't go alone there's more fun if you take pictures with friends.

Important part of Korean history. Try and take the free tours on offer ( timings are available on the website). Entry fee is nominal. You can make a grand entrance for free if you wear Hanbok ( traditional Korean dress) which can be rented from any of a number of shops around. Interesting architecture with background of surrounding mountains. Changing of the guards ceremony happens twice a day. Definitely worth a visit.

I had the pleasure of visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace during my recent trip to Seoul, and it was an unforgettable experience. The moment I stepped through the majestic gates, I was transported back in time to Korea's royal past. The intricate architecture, the serene courtyards, and the informative exhibits inside the palace provided a fascinating insight into the country's rich history.

The perfect day out for a history enthusiast visiting Korea I remember firsthand seeing this place how beautiful it looked with the nice sky and mountains in the background. A small fee to enter the grounds I noticed that people in traditional dress I do believe they enter for free something worth looking into when you go. It’s so peaceful and a lot to explore if I was Korean I’d be so proud to have such a beautiful masterpiece in my capital city a reminder of how resilient and creative the culture is learning facts I never knew in the fresh air not to crowded either this should most definitely be your first stop in Korea.

There's not much to see. Changing of the guard (10min) was the most colorful and interesting thing other than the throne room, which you have to look at from outside. Apparently, a lot of Korean historical movies are filmed here, but they must do the place up for that, and only that.

The most memorable place me and my mother visited in South Korea, accessible by train and cab. They preserved the place really well and the beauty of the palace is immaculate. To have the best experience you have to rent a Hanbok { Korean traditional clothes) and experience being the princess in the K-drama that you watched! This made me feel like I traveled back into the past. I visited this on weekdays so I do not have to wait in the long line. You also need to watch the switching of the guards. They wear a traditional guards clothes. All in all I really enjoyed my visit

Wonderful place to visit while in Seoul! The palace opens at 9am but be sure to get there a bit earlier to buy your ticket and beat the crowd. The entire site is worth visiting, walk around and get lost exploring the numerous buildings. The changing of the guard takes place at 10am or 2pm every day except Tuesday. Do not miss it, it's definitely a sight to see!

I visited the Korean Palace Museum when it was raining and pretty miserable, I still had an excellent time. There was a student learning english who walked us around and explained all of the fun historical facts. The buildings are impeccably kept, all of the ornate paintings, stone work and grounds are maintained and beautiful. The volunteer groups that were dressed up all had beautiful traditional costumes. They did not mind us taking photos with them.

The place is amazing. You can rent traditional outfit outside before entering the palace. We arrived at around 9:30am and we were able to enter after a costume change around 10am. It's the best time to visit because you get to watch the open parade and there are few tourists inside so you can take your time taking beautiful photos. One of our most favorite from the trip was taken from the palace. Our truly kind and beautiful tour escort took the shot. We will be back for more.

Enjoy the palace grounds and the changing of the guard at no charge (free). For the 2:00 show, plan on arriving by 1:45 at the latest, as the entrances will then be blocked to avoid any interference. Arrive earlier if possible for a better view. These photos were taken on a relatively uncrowded weekday.

(Translated by Google) The must-arranged trip to South Korea is to wear Hanbok to Gyeongbokgung Palace! There are many hanbok rental shops near Gyeongbokgung Palace, and most of them have Chinese-speaking shop assistants. Hanbok has a variety of colors and patterns, no matter how many times you go, you won’t get tired of wearing it! And wearing Hanbok to Gyeongbokgung can be free of admission fees. However, Hanbok does not have the effect of keeping out the cold, so it is recommended to wear it on warm days. (Translated by Google) It is a palace built by the Joseon Dynasty located in the middle of Seoul. The size seems to be a little smaller than that of Changdeokgung Palace and Changgyeonggung Palace combined. It was completed during Taejo's Iseonggye, but Gyeongbokgung Palace was emptied when the capital was moved back to Kaesong during King Jeongjong. After the Imjin War, Changdeokgung Palace was rebuilt instead of Gyeongbokgung Palace and used as a palace, but was rebuilt by Heungseon Daewon County. However, it lost its original form during the Japanese colonial period, and only recently began to look for its former form again. The nearest subway stations are Gyeongbokgung Station on Line 3 and Gwanghwamun Station on Line 5, and buildings such as Gwanghwamun, Geunjeongjeon, Amisan Chimney, Gyeonghoeru, and Hyangwonjeong are the most popular. In particular, when it opens at night, you can see the beautiful Dancheong illuminated by the lights and the majestic Geunjeongjeong and the beautiful Gyeonghoeru reflecting the pond.

This palace is centrally located in Seoul and is almost impossible to miss. This is a good thing as the palace, and its surrounding buildings, gardens, and statues are worth every second that is spent here. It feels like stepping back in time. The architecture and art is breathtaking. Pictures do not do this place justice. If you can fit it into your trip I highly recommend it.

👍: -The main palace attraction in Seoul, must visit. Most tourist would come to this one instead of the smaller ones around the area. -There is a small entrance fee of just a couple thousand won I think, but definitely worth it. -Do check up their online website as there is a free guided tour at different timings of the day. Do come early to make you get yourself a slot in the tour group. -Even if you're not on tour, the area is free to walk and you can just visit the different areas around this palace. -There is a cafe inside, look out for map on where it is. 👎: -Toilet is only available around the cafe area and, you won't find any toilets in the main palace area.

(Translated by Google) I am glad that Gyeongbokgung has become a fun space I want to visit more and more. In the past, it was recognized as a boring cultural festival area, but these days it seems to have become a place where many young people also visit. Restoration continues, and the new Palace Museum and Folk Museum next to it were very nice. It takes quite a while to see the Gyeongbokgung Palace itself. There were many art museums next to Gyeongbokgung Palace, and there were many things to see and eat. Such a beautiful palace! Wear your hanbok when you go there - highly recommend! Entrance to the palaces is free of charge if you’re wearing hanbok. If you don’t own one and you’re a foreigner, don’t worry. There are plenty of hanbok rentals outside the palace. You can rent it for a few hours or for the whole day. If you want to explore the palace, I highly recommend that you rent the hanbok for the day so that way you’re not rushing. The palace ground is big and it took us more than four hours to explore it. Wear comfortable shoes! I also recommend bringing packed lunch/snack and water. There are areas/benches where you can sit down and eat. Lastly, take time to explore the palace and take lots of pictures! Oh by the way, we got there right when the palace opened, around 10am, and we’re able to watch the ceremony. It was really cool!

Gyeongbokgung (Korean: 경복궁; Hanja: 景福宮), also known as Gyeongbokgung Palace or Gyeongbok Palace, was the main royal palace of the Joseon dynasty. Built in 1395, it is located in northern Seoul, South Korea. The largest of the Five Grand Palaces built by the Joseon dynasty, Gyeongbokgung served as the home of Kings of the Joseon dynasty, the Kings' households, as well as the government of Joseon. Gyeongbokgung continued to serve as the main palace of the Joseon dynasty until the premises were destroyed by fire during the Imjin War (1592–1598) and abandoned for two centuries. However, in the 19th century, all of the palace's 7,700 rooms were later restored under the leadership of Prince Regent Heungseon during the reign of King Gojong. Some 500 buildings were restored on a site of over 40 hectares. The architectural principles of ancient Korea were incorporated into the tradition and appearance of the Joseon royal court. In the early 20th century, much of the palace was systematically destroyed by Imperial Japan. On January 21, 1963, it was designated as a cultural property. Since the 1990s, the walled palace complex is gradually being restored to its original form. Today, the palace is arguably regarded as being the most beautiful and grandest of all five palaces. It also houses the National Palace Museum and the National Folk Museum within the premises of the complex.

You don’t need to wear a hanbok to get the free entry, you can also get the free entry by visiting the palace on every last Wednesday of the Month. The walk with the guide device took me about 2 hours. It was very cultural and beautiful inside, though lots of areas were blocked from entering to preserve the heritage. It’s worth a go if you visit Seoul. My recommendation was to enter once the palace is open (9am), so you can take more clean shot as there were lesser crowd. While I was exiting the palace at about 11, it was full of human traffic.

Must visit places if you are in Korea. You can rent the Korean traditional outfit from out of the place and click pictures with it. If you were wearing a traditional outfit then there will be no entry fee for the palace. There are so many shops outside the place from where you can rent outfits and accessories and change it there in the shops.changing rooms are available there. You must see the guard of honour which takes place every day in the palace. It's beautiful.

A must see when in Seoul. It was the first place I visited when I arrived in the city and I was so impressed. First of all the price was so decent. 3000 won per person. The place is like a maze, you go from a yard to another one, you discover very beautiful buildings and smiling people. Lots of local tourists who give the place an authentic vibe. I went there during the change of guard and it was a nice show to watch. Totally recommend it.

One of the most fruitful experiences of my trip, this palace was filled with incredible views that were supported by Autumn leaves. The overall palace has plenty to see and appreciate, regardless of the season. It seemed that a partly cloudy evening was just a cherry on top for this trip. Although it was very crowded in some areas, people were respectful of other's photography, even with so many people doing it! It's incredible to see the traditional clothing some people have procured, and really gives you an image of what this place would've looked like in centuried past.

Destroyed and rebuilt several times, a potent symbol of the pride and resilience of the Korean people. Also known as the Northern Palace, the Gyeongbokgung Palace is the largest of five palaces in Seoul that were home to the kings of Korea’s ruling Joseon dynasty (1392–1910). Built in 1395, it was the main palace of the kings until it was destroyed during the Japanese invasion in the 1590s. Surviving examples. In the 19th century, the regent, Heungseon Daewongun, rebuilt the palace, creating a vast complex of over 330 buildings covering 0.2 square miles (0.6 square km). This was largely destroyed during the Japanese occupation of Korea (1910–1945). However, several 19th-century buildings survived, providing beautiful examples of traditional Korean stone-and-wood architecture and decoration. They include the ornate two-story Geunjeongjeon (Imperial Throne Hall), the Gyeonghoeru (Royal Banqueting Hall), and Jagyeongjeon Hall (Quarters of the King’s mother).

(Translated by Google) It is the leading palace among the five palaces that were operated in Hanseong during the Joseon Dynasty. It was founded in the 4th year of King Taejo of Joseon (1395) and operated for about 200 years. After being destroyed during the Imjin War, it was neglected for 250 years. At that time, the scale of the reconstruction was epic, exceeding that of the previous one, and the scale of Geunjeongjeon was rebuilt larger than in the early Joseon period, and several halls were also built behind Mt. It has not been used since Agwanpacheon in 1895, but was neglected in 1910 due to the annexation of Korea and Japan. By the time it was built, most of the halls were torn down. Gyeongbokgung Palace restoration work started in 1991, and the main hall located on the main ordinate has been reconstructed and restoration is in progress. (Translated by Google) Seoul is surrounded by Bukhansan (north) Gwanaksan (south) Achasan (east) and Deokyangsan (west), which is the Oosasan mountain, and the Baekak Ansan in the north, the main mountain as Naesasan. It is located on a generous plain of a wide bosom, surrounded by Inwang (仁王) on the west side of Naksan (酡酪, Naksan) on the east side of Mokmyeok (木覓, Namsan) in the south. Gyeongbokgung Palace, the beop palace of the Joseon Dynasty, is located here, slightly inclined to the west from the south of Baekaksan Mountain, the center of Seoul. The Joseon Dynasty, founded in Gaegyeong, the capital of Goryeo, lasted for 27 to 518 years from 1392 to 1910. The forces that usurped the regime by force put a lot of burden on the former dynasty, which lasted for 475 years, and the people's sentiment toward Gaegyeong, which had been transferred to the new dynasty within a short period of time. In addition, constant internal conflicts with vested powers led to political anxiety. Therefore, Cheondo was recognized as an important and urgent task for the new dynasty. However, due to the conflict of personal interests of the subordinates and the divided opinions of the core officials on the selection of the palace site, the initial plans for the transition were rather lukewarm. However, Taejo, who has a strong will to Cheondo, actively promoted Cheondo by visiting Mt. Gyeryong, which was mentioned as a candidate for the new capital, and Muak in Sinchon, and Hanyang under Mt. Baekak. In August of 1394 (Taejo 3), on the way back after examining Muak, Taejo stayed in Nanjing, which is the old palace of Hanyang, where the old Goryeo's palace was located. After making a decision and returning to Gaegyeong, a temporary organization called the Shindo Palace Building Guide (新都宮闕造成都監) was set up to take on the task of building the palace. Subsequently, Kwon Jung-hwa, Jeong Jeong-jeon, Shim Deok-bu, Kim Ju, and Nam-eun moved to Hanyang to decide where the palace and Jongmyo resignation would be. Accordingly, the construction of the palace was promoted, and the general construction was completed on September 25, 1395, the following year. The first palace in the Joseon Dynasty was Gyeongbokgung Palace. This is the view of Gyeongbokgung Palace as viewed from Sajik-dong in 1896. From right to left of the photo, you can see the roofs of Gwanghwamun, Heungryemun, Geunjeongmun, and Geunjeongjeon, as well as the now-disappeared Seocrossjagak. Since the palace was completed, it could not be without its name. The name'Gyeongbokgung', meaning'to prosper with great blessings', was coined by Jeong Do-jeon, who was ordered by Taejo. '景福' appears in the 「Gichwi」 of Dae-a in 『Sikyung』(詩經), "Because he is already drunk and is already full of virtue, the military man will enjoy great blessings for many years to come" (旣醉以酒 旣飽以德  君子萬年 介爾景福. At the time of completion, the total size of Gyeongbokgung Palace was 755 spaces, including 173 spaces in the civil war area, 192 spaces in the abduction area, and 390 spaces in other buildings such as the Gwangnaegaksa Temple and the corridor. In the pre-emperoral state, the palace is a place that symbolizes the dignity of the state and the royal family, beyond the meaning of a space where the king examines the government. For this reason, the best capabilities of the time were mobilized in the palace's contrast, and the largest and highest standards were maintained. However, the Gyeongbokgung Palace at the time of completion was not so great in terms of scale because it was hurriedly completed with only the minimum conditions necessary as a palace. Its appearance as a de facto court palace, equipped with all the spaces and facilities for the king's official activities, living and living spaces, and sponsorships, was achieved through continuous expansion and reconstruction. After that, the Joseon Dynasty suffered two difficulties from the prince, and the Gyeongbokgung Palace was virtually emptied for 10 years due to repeated dysfunctions of the Gaegyeong Cheondo and Hanseong Hwando due to political anxiety. Then, when Taejong built Changdeokgung and transferred to Hanseong, his father, Taejo, ordered repairs, saying that he could not abandon the revered Gyeongbokgung Palace, and began to look for the appearance of the palace again. In the 11th year of his throne (1411), Taejong brought Myeongdangsu to Geumcheon and decorated the surroundings beautifully. Thus, during the Taejong period, the Yanggwang system was established to see the jeongsa by going back and forth between Gyeongbokgung Palace (Beop Palace) and Changdeok Palace (Igung Palace). It was not until Sejong University that Gyeongbokgung Palace actually took over the role of the palace. Since 1421 (Sejong 3), Sejong repaired the palace by frequently following Gyeongbokgung Palace. The names of Hongryemun (now Heungryemun), Gwanghwamun, Ilhwamun, Wolhwamun, Geonchunmun, Yeongchumun, and Yeongjegyo at this time contain Confucian idealism. In addition, King Sejong established the Donggung, Charseondang, repaired Geunjeongjeon, Geonchunmun, and Gangnyeongjeon, rebuilt the Gyeonghoeru and Sajeongjeon, and established the north gate to complete the four gates of the palace. As a result, the early Gyeongbokgung Palace, which consisted only of a palace and a haengrang, became a complete palace with a palace and a palace after 30 years of its establishment. / I 1'Since then, the Gyeongbokgung Palace was destroyed by a fire in Donggung in the 38th year of King Jungjong (1543) and a big fire in the 8th year of Myeongjong (1553). Gyeongbokgung Palace, which had been steadily constructed and rebuilt until the 16th century, suffered irreparable damage from the Imjin War, which broke out in the 25th year of King Seonjo (1592). After the war, a specific plan for reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung Palace was established by the ancestors, but due to the lack of finances due to the war and the Feng Shui belief that the Gyeongbokgung Palace site was not long, the practice was defeated. After that, Gyeongbokgung Palace was left as a ruin for as many as 273 years, and in the 2nd year of King Gojong (1865), a reconstruction text was issued by the great king’s father, Cho, which greatly reflected the intentions of Heungseon Daewon. The reconstruction of Gyeongbokgung Palace led by Heungseon Daewon-gun was completed in the 5th year of King Gojong (1868). It is said that the size of Gyeongbokgung Palace, which was revealed at this time, was larger than that of King Taejo. Gojong continued from Changdeokgung Palace after the completion of Gyeongbokgung Palace, and in 1873 (Gojong 10), due to the conflict with Daewon-gun, he built Geoncheonggung Palace behind the present-day Hyangwonjeong Palace and saw the government there. Then, in December of that year, there was a fire in the Jagyeongjeon Hall, and in November 1876, a large fire destroyed all the entire buildings of the civil war. The king continued to Changdeokgung Palace due to subsequent reorganizations, and Gyeongbokgung Palace was neglected due to the unstable situation inside and outside. Then, the civil war in Gyeongbokgung was reorganized in 1885, when the king relocated to Gyeongbokgung Palace due to Im Ogunran (壬午軍亂) in 1882 (19 of King Gojong) and Gapsinjeongbyeon (甲申政變) in 1884. However, history progressed quickly, and the fate of Gyeongbokgung Palace was swung in the swirl of history. In 1895, when Empress Myeongseong was attacked by a Japanese ancestor at Kunnyeonghap in Geoncheonggung, Gyeongbokgung Palace, King Gojong conducted Agwanpacheon (俄館播遷) for personal protection. Gojong, who had stayed at the Russian legation for more than a year, was converted to Gyeongun Palace (Deoksugung Palace) in 1897. And since the annexation of Korea and Japan in 1910 was made, Gyeongbokgung Palace, which left the king through Shinmumun during Agwanpacheon, lost its permanent owner and lost its function and role. After the annexation of Korea and Japan, the Japanese imperialism systematically damaged the royal family and the palace, a symbol of national power. In 1912, all facilities around Heungryemun and Yeongje Bridge were demolished in the south of Geunjeongmun for the construction of the Government-General of the Joseon Dynasty. In 1914, most of the halls were torn down in the name of holding the so-called “5th year commemorative Chosun Product Competition” at Gyeongbokgung Palace. In 1917, a large fire of unknown cause broke out in the civil war in Changdeokgung Palace. At this time, in the name of repairing the burnt building, most of the building of the civil war in Gyeongbokgung Palace in 1918 was demolished and rebuilt in Changdeokgung Palace. After the Governor's Office building was completed in 1926, the Japanese colonial rule tried to demolish Gwanghwamun, but faced fierce opposition, it was only moved to the east of the palace and toward the entrance of the present National Folk Museum. After that, Gyeongbokgung Palace was constantly damaged, and as many as 4,000 buildings were sold or demolished, reducing its size to about a tenth, and countless dismantled halls were also used to build private houses, shrines, and temples of Japanese people. In addition, the Joseon Museum, an art gallery, and a museum management office were built in the vacant lot, and relics such as pagodas and Buddhist temples that had nothing to do with the palace were located. (Translated by Google) This place seems to be bigger than I thought, but I think it would have been a small space when I think of the royal families who had to stay here for a lifetime. There are signs posted around the buildings in Gyeongbokgung Palace, and it hurts because the palace seemed to have been damaged a lot during Japanese colonial rule. Even some buildings were destroyed by Japan on their own or some were carried to Tokyo, so Japan at the time was really wicked. There are many people near Gwanghwamun, Geunjeongjeon and Gyeonghoeru. If you move to the side a little, there are quite a lot of spaces like a labyrinth without people, but if you stand there, you can feel the tranquility as if you are in a different world. I want to visit again when it opens at night. Usually, you have to leave at 5-6 PM. If you want to take a good picture, you must come to the sky on a blue day... If you visit on a day with a lot of fine dust, the picture will float in white.

Travel sorang datang sini so I can enjoy myself very much. Kebetulan masa datang tu pun, langit clear sangat warna biru. This is a beautiful historical site. We were on a tour and walked through it way too quickly. It would have been nice to spend several hours here taking in the rich culture and beautiful surrounding. We loved our experience here! It's so grand and there's so many little nooks and courtyards to see. There's also an option to wear a hanbok here as well! Take your time exploring here; it's worth spending a couple hours at least! Nice!

The Winter experience in Gyeonbokgung Palace is totally difference. So you have to see this palace in Winter. The Frozen lakes, the trees really bring a different feeling. If you're a kdrama fan the winter scenery here will definitely remind you of Moon Lovers drama. The palace closes at 5.00 pm. So plan your day accordingly.

Gyeongbokgung Palace is a fantastic place to visit and a must see for any trip to Seoul. Access is very easy and there are many areas that offer great photo opportunities. The view from the main gate is probably the most famous and also definitely the most crowded. If you want to take a picture here you may have to settle for other people in the background. However, once you get further into the palace grounds it becomes a lot less crowded to the point where once your at the back of the palace there sometimes isn't any other people around and you get a more relaxed private experience. Overall, Although a little busy at the entrance, visiting Gyeongbokgung Palace is a must for any traveller to Seoul.

I'd like to share my experience of visiting Gyeong bokgung Plalace. It is located in Jongno-gu,Seoul.It opens 9am to 5pm from Novenber to February. And it depends on season. At summer and fall it opens longer than winter. I learned that the palace is the most imfortant palace in Joseon. And it was builded by Yi Seonggye but it was burned by Japan at Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592.However, it was restored by Heungseon Daewongun to strengthen the throne. There is ritual that change a sumunjang and it is performed twice a day.The ritual involved a Korean traditional music parade. It is a good experience for me, because it is't common experience It is worth visiting for taking a picture and for having a new experience.I strongly recommed a visit to Gyeong bokgung Palace. And lastly I will give you a tip.you should go early. If you go early, you can take a picture without other people.

Gyeongbokgung Palace. There are 5 palaces in Seoul. So it actually brings a new meaning to palace hopping in Seoul if you are thinking of what to do. This one is the biggest of the 5 and is located right beside the national palace museum so that you can start your palace hopping journey right. During the month of April and May. There are also night tours which is quite a popular activity with the locals.

A nice place to visit and see Korea's historical place. It is one of the largest Palace in Korea, still keep intact. There is even a museum situated next to it. Interesting place to visit. Rich in cultural history, with insights to Korea's past. It is a big and imposing structure that resembles the Forbidden City in Beijing, since it has similar buildings and organization. There lies the issue: for those who have visited the Forbidden City, this palace falls short. Still, definitely worth the visit if you are in Seoul and you should plan in spending about 90 minutes here, more if you also visit the National Palace Museum, which is in the same complex. Make sure you do not miss the Palace Pavilion by the pond -- it is truly gorgeous. Also, they conduct some reenactments from time to time, which are worth seeing.

Was here twice on my trip - first on a walking tour to see the changing of the guards at 2pm I believe it was. This was definitely worth seeing and was really cool! I came back later on a weekend and it was very busy but I had a great time doing the English speaking tour of the palace! Was great to learn more of what all of the buildings were used as and some more Korean history

I absolutely loved going here dressed in a hanbok to go and explore while taking amazing pictures. If you go in June it'll be super hot and humid and when I went it was very packed. You get in for free if your wearing Korean traditional clothing like a hanbok for girls. My sister and I loved the scenery and the architecture of every building we saw. I will never forget this gorgeous experience.

One of the most iconic spot in Seoul Korea to visit. Get ready for a long trek and bring lots of water. Revisit this place when it was hot and everything was outdoors. Majestic and old, this place brings back era of the Korean Dynasty. Deep in rich history, you will learn at least something before you go. There is an indoor museum further back which is free to enter west wing side for the kids to see. More of a children's museum.

It is really worth to visit. We were coming from Turkey. If you have limited time, try to visit areas in palace efficiently because many places are similar. Since palace is huge, do not waste time at similar places. Read the story and go to next areas. Minimum 2 hours needed.

Gyeongbokgung Palace is a former royal palace built during the Joseon Dynasty. Some people come dressed in traditional outfits, which adds folklore to this majestic place. It looks like a beautiful picture with traditional buildings, big gates, and a big courtyard. People can see the Changing of the Guard ceremony and wear traditional clothes. The palace has a big history museum that tells about Korea's past. Visiting is like stepping back in time to see how kings and queens lived. The palace is famous and can get busy, especially on nice days. If you like history and pretty places, Gyeongbok Palace is a must-visit when you're in Seoul.

We visited impressive Gyongbokgung Palace in the afternoon and it was so huge. Enjoy watching people in beautiful Hanbok dresses taking photos. The palace was in a vast area with many interesting buildings and gardens inside so you shall have 3-4 hours to cover them all. There was a National Palace Museum at the front gate and National Folk Museum of Korea at the back gate including NMMA across the street so you can really spend the whole day visiting this area.

The one to see. If you are over 65 you enter for free (thank you Korea). The grounds are interesting to walk through. You can easily imagine what is was like centuries ago...where the soldiers slept, etc. We caught a period parade just before entering in traditional costume. Have fun and rent one yourself.

I'd allocate at least 1.5-2 hours to fully explore Gyeokbokgung Palace, it's spread out over a large area. Start early if you want to get photos without the crowds. The free English tour gave us a good insight into the history of the palace. We also watched the changing of the guards ceremony - it's usually at 10am but ours started at 9.45am so keep an ear out for the announcement. Free admission on the last Weds of the month. Don't forget to allocate additional time to visit the nearby National Palace Museum and National Folk Museum.

The palace is in excellent condition. You go in free if you go dress in the traditional clothes( hanbok). The palace it's beautiful and full of color. Take an umbrella because the sun is brutal. Next time I'll do Golden hour. The palace also have a few shows available through out the day.

$2 tickets with free guided tour, you can spend about 1-2 hours here. We did the tour for about 0.5 hours but then the group got too big so we split up and walked in our own. The guide was very knowledgeable and friendly while the palace is well preserved. I like how they don’t overcharge you, also if you wear traditional hanbok, or are over 65 you don’t need to pay!

  • 4/5 Amanda H. 6 months ago on Google
Very pretty to walk around, and entry is free if you wear hanbok. I don't know if the buildings are ever open, but most weren't when we were there. It was also super busy, so maybe plan to go early on a weekday to avoid some crowds.

A must visit if you are in Seoul for the first time. The palace has an incredible history and walking between its buildings and walls really takes you back in time. A downside I found is that most of the buildings are completely closed, so I felt it was a missed opportunity to show a bit more history and traditions through small room setups. Overall is a great experience, I recommend going in the morning since the crowd gets bigger and bigger as mid day/afternoon comes closer.

Visited on a late Saturday afternoon. A short queue to a vending machine for tickets. Should you dress up in traditional Korean clothes, you may enter for free. Guided tour in english available - and recommended as most building look alike - and there certainly is a lot more culture and history to this magical site and its glorious inhabitants. A must see attraction in Seoul for the family!

Totally worth my second visit! I love walking around the area and learning about the Joseon Dynasty. If you’re up for ~1hr tour, join the English commentary at various timings in the day for more fun facts about the Palace! It can get pretty crowded but it’s a massive space, so it’s quite a walk!

I’d say visiting it is mandatory if you’re in Seoul for the first time. I didn’t find it too interesting but some sights are pretty and people in hanboks made it even better. There is a cool souvenir shop and you can either rent an audio guide or bring a couple of brochures with you. It’s quite big so you can easily spend 2 hours roaming it
