Winston Churchill’s home, studio, and beautiful expansive gardens. This is absolutely worth a visit for people of all ages and abilities (and maybe even your furry four legged friends) as it has fairly accessible walking paths, play area and house hunt activity for kids, interesting information for the history buffs, and beautiful gardens and walking paths for seeing nature. Recommend getting house tickets in advance to avoid possible disappointment in busy times. Also try to join the studio talk (basically a mini one room tour) if possible as it gives an interesting insight into his love for painting. There is quite a bit of parking but this can get full on summer weekends. The cafe has both indoor and outdoor seating, and next door is a nice National Trust gift shop and bookshop.

I have been wanting to go here for a long time, finally made it on Good Friday. It didn't disappoint. Stunning grounds and property. Lovely home of Winston Churchill and family. Loved the gallery with alot of Winston's paintings. Would highly recommend.

On the National Trust website the place looks deceptively small, but it is actually a big house and the grounds are massive! Perfect for a day out. The dinning room is my favourite! It has an incredible view. Note: when we went, people were given specific times to enter the house. I am not sure whether this is a COVID measure or not. This can be slightly annoying because we arrived at 2pm and our entry time to the house was 3:50pm which is quite a long time to wait if you were just going for the house.

Had a great time at Chartwell yesterday! There is plenty of parking space available and good cafe and toilet facilities. The grounds are vast and excellent for families or dog walkers. The house itself is extremely interesting and full of information about Churchill and his time here, his studio is very interesting as well. You can get amazing views of the county from his garden as well. Would highly recommend and will very likely visit again.

Absolutely fantastic house, gardens and ground of Winston Churchill. You can make a day trip to this national trust property. We went a few years back but it was too late to visit the house. Car parking is free for the member, and you just need to scan your membership card to get a ticket, otherwise is £4 for the whole day by cash/ coins. You can also get the parking ticket at the ticket office paying by car. There is cafe, toilets, plants sales at the entrance of the property. You then can get map and free audio guides. You will be giving a timed tickets to go to see inside of house. If the weather is good, you can bring some picnic and a blanket to have next to the pond near the rose garden and the house. The house is well worth visit. You go in from the front of the house and show your tickets. Very nice pictures, uniforms and collections of the arts. .. You can then go to the studio to see some of Churchill’s paintings. Remember to see the garden and go for a walk in the woodland. There are a couple of play areas and the tree house in route. We had a enjoyable day here. Recommended for all.

I absolutely loved this place, I had been a few times as a child and it has such presence that I remember most of it. The work by the volunteers is admirable, they really know their stuff and they make the experience even better for learning. I would definitely recommend that you do the private art viewing, we had someone called Neil and he even gave a tour of a special room, not open to the general public. The gardens were beautiful and you will find yourself wandering around and time will fly by.

The grounds were so pretty , with a long walk too. There were a few steep inclines but nothing much. Food was great the shop included the usual national trust things (did include a lot of churchill books and biography's). Had a few play parks dotted around and was a great day out on a rainy day.

It's a very pretty romantic place. Churchill had bought this for his wife Clementine and since then, it had to become their family home. He had a separate unit which he used as his studio. It's full of his own paintings. Nice time to visit the garden to see the blue bells too. Many small ponds adorned the land. He was very good at masonry work too. The little playhouse he built himself for his children still survives. Loved the whole place.

My wife and I decided on a visit at the last moment one morning, and we probably did not do enough research on it, because when we arrived we didn't quite believe how much there was to see! It was absolutely amazing! We started off by visiting the studio where many of Winston Churchill's original artwork is displayed, but even the scenery on walking to it was breathtaking, with ponds and lakes and views miles into the distance. The walled garden was fascinating, and we sat above it for a while to appreciate the vista! The really huge, old trees kept me focused on how old the whole place must have been, and the walk back to the main house was equally worth the time. As for the house and contents, well, just incredible is about the best of describing it. It was a great day out, and just how good it was proved to be a topic for conversation on the way home.

Lovely day out. Gardens are so beautiful. Best take a picnic and enjoy the sounds, smells and views. The house itself is very interesting with a museum all about the great man himself. Give yourself at least 3 hours

A great day out and definitely worth it especially if you have a national trust membership. The house is great and there are a number of exhibits kept inside the house . I particularly liked the kitchen . In the garden there’s a rose garden with many varieties of roses . There are a couple of small ponds with fish in it . There’s acres of woodland to explore on a not so hot days and much more …

Beautiful grounds to visit and have a walk in a beautiful day. The Chartwell House is full of history and memories. The art studio is also great to view Churchill's paintings. There is a nice shop and cafe to end your day. I would just say try to buy the tickets in advance.

This home is amazing! You know and feel that you are walking in the footsteps of a family. Practically touching their famous lives. Soo special. On top of it you are guided, informed and served by an incredibly friendly, well informed and helpful staff, they are the gift on top of a perfect experience.

An NT property well worth the visit. Walking in the steps (literally) of the late great Winston Churchill was amazing and the property the house is on is HUGE. Although there are some paved areas, some of them are steep or sloped in areas. There are steps towards the house, steps in part of the walled garden and the house is on three floors. There was only one disabled toilet by the visitor centre, didn’t see any others. Visitors to the house are asked to put their back packs on to their front to avoid accidentally knocking anything. The staff were very knowledgeable and friendly and there was so much to see, from his personal life to his military service and has political career. There is a wheelchair lift reserved only for those unable to manage stairs. The gardens alone are well worth the visit although again, not suitable for those with mobility issues.

10/10. The National Trust has done a fantastic job of restoring and preserving Chartwell. The Gardens are stunning too. The House is full of so much memorabilia of Sir Winston. I would highly recommend going here. Even with hundreds of people on site it didn’t seem busy. One of the best of its kind in the world.

Amazing experience learning about Churchill's residence. Gorgeous house and grounds. Walking paths all over. Beautiful gardens and ponds with black swans. Playgrounds for kids. Studio showing his artwork on the walls. Public toilets. Lots of parking. Cute gift shop and book store. Great place to take photos inside and outside. Kids all over enjoying the grass to run and play. Loved this experience as a visitor from the USA. Thank you to the volunteers who taught us so much!

I visited this charming house last week (July 23') with my 3 month old in a sling. The house and gardens are beautiful! Great cafes - always a must. Thank you to the friendly and knowledgeable staff for their help calling the bus to take me and the buggy back to the car park!

Churchill's old home. Brilliant historical tour of the house, open to National Trust members for free, or otherwise at a decent cost! The house and volunteers are great, but the grounds are also lovely. Great little cafe up the top of the site looking over the Weald. Great woods to explore with the kids (decent walk and hills so no buggies I'd say!). Can make a good 3-4 hours of it.

Without a doubt one of my favourite National Trust visits. Yes, it's a beautiful place, stunning views and obviously the home of Winston Churchill, but I found the guides here outstanding. Incredibly passionate and informative, they were incredibly engaging and made the house come to life.

Grounds not as extensive as if imagined. Nice woodland walk though as well as house and other points of interest. Two cafes but further one may be seasonal as it was closed. Main cafe v busy but staff coped well. Gardens looking great (Oct) but lake has a lot of high fencing and around it atm.

We took our New Zealand friends today and we all felt like we were walking in the footsteps of history. The stunning gardens and terraces, the house preserved so beautifully. And even the terraced cafe was perfect in late autumn warmth.

Only a few car parking spaces available by noon. Timed ticket for house entry was a good idea and the volunteers were knowledgeable and enthusiastic. We did a guided tour of the gardens and the studio - a helpful start before visiting the house. Big queue in cafe but quick to serve. The volunteers were brilliant!

Fantastic gardens with flowers, fruits and veggies. The Churchill's house is full of history and nicely maintained. A bit pricy so maybe worth having a membership

The gardens are a bit bare at this time of the year but this is to be expected. As always the house is wonderful as it is decorated for Christmas and that dining room is just fantastic, one of the best rooms in the NT

You have access to a very nice restaurant, shopping and second-hand books.

Wonderful place, staff in the house were very knowledgeable. Grounds were lovely. Would suggest the NT pick at least some of the fruit on their trees, plenty that could be used in their cafe or sold in the shop or even donated to local foodbanks or animal sanctuaries, understand the need to keep some and let it fall naturally for the local wildlife but more than could be consumed available.

Excellent National Trust property to visit, (even on a sunny summer holiday day when it was super busy) with a bit of something for everyone - learnt a lot I didn't know about Winston Churchill, large collection of his artwork on site which was fascinating, very interesting home and breathtaking grounds with lots to explore and see, plenty of play area for children and two cafes to boot. Lovely gift shop, knowledgeable and friendly staff and volunteers

Car park was very busy. Using overflow car park. But once inside plenty of space so not crowded at all. House tours were popular but very well marshaled.

Nice place to visit, plenty of open space for kids to run around with play areas dotted about. The house was interesting but having a guide in every room was not my cup of tea. The one draw back is the car park was not big enough. It was completely full by 11 in the morning so if you want to park just get there about 9:10am

  • 5/5 Lyn B. 1 year ago on Google
What a wonderful place to visit. The place is set up exactly as it was left by Clementine, with their original possessions and you can tell it was a much loved home. There are many of Churchill's original paintings on show around the house as well as many of his uniforms, medals and hats. We even saw the wall that Churchill built himself around the garden, very impressive. The grounds and gardens are beautiful and it is easy to see why he loved it so much.

  • 5/5 Jocelyn T. 1 year ago on Google
Churchill lived at this house for over 40 years and used it as his family home. There was much happiness here. The house is a mixture of displays as the house one was and information boards telling the fascinating story of Winston's life. The house tour lasts for well over an hour and the extensive gardens just call out to be explored. An audio tour guide of the garden can be picked up at reception. There is a large gift shop and cafe on site. One of the Trusts jewels and well worth a visit. 3 hours can easily slip by here.
