👍👍 I've wanted to visit here for years, but it is a far drive from Pittsburgh. The Fetterman Massacre was the army’s worst defeat in the West until the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. If you're familiar with the battle you'll enjoy a stop at this monument. We could see the exact locations where bat...

I've wanted to visit here for years, but it is a far drive from Pittsburgh. The Fetterman Massacre was the army’s worst defeat in the West until the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876. If you're familiar with the battle you'll enjoy a stop at this monument. We could see the exact locations where battle maneuvers took place, and this easy drive (about three miles) from Fort Phil Kearny.

Kiosks have a ton of straightforward information. Very well marked out and like most things: it’s the story about the events that makes it significant.

The story of the US Army VS the Sioux in this neighborhood is the stuff of legends. The deeper you dig into the story the richer and richer it becomes. I've read 4 meaty books about it all fairly recently, which makes these landmarks come alive. The two most significant are the Fetterman massacre site and Fort Phil Kearney.

This place is not for the casual historian. The stone marker is easy to get to but just looks neglected. If you are afraid of cows, leave after looking at the stone marker. The rest of the site is literally on a range. We had to maneuver through a herd that was hanging out all around the trail! The walking tour is long. It is up and down many hills. Just when you think you have come to the last marker, you see one more way in the distance. Wear good walking shoes and lots of sunscreen!

We went on the hike. It was great. Just the right length and no major elevation changes. Lots of informational signs.

Nice place to stop for picnic lunch with great views of the rolling grassy hillsides. Also really interesting accounts of the massacre that took place here. The stone monument and plaque stood out atop the rolling grassy hillsides. There are a couple of short walks that you can do here as well.

Having recently studied some of the history of this area, I was not disappointed by the Fetterman Monument. The interpretive trail provided quite a bit of information that reiterated what I had learned. If you are a fan of history and you'd like to experience a little bit, I would highly recommend this battlefield. You can put yourself in the shoes of the infantrymen who faced the Natives and you can see how the Natives were able to defeat the US Army.

Lovely spot, just to add that google maps directed me from the north where the road dead ends before reaching the parking area- the stretch of road coming from the north is closed and unmaintained so I just walked the 10 min or so but not sure this is actually encouraged... come from the south :)
