I knew about the Kabukiza show before going to Tokyo. I tried to buy tickets online before arriving, but It was difficult for me to navigate the website. Once I arrived in Tokyo, I asked the concierge at my hotel for assistance, but the website showed the shows as sold out. I decided to go and take a picture of the theatre exterior. Once I got to the theatre, I asked about tickets because I saw a lady at a desk that read "ask me about tickets." This wonderful woman took me to a door labeled "Entrance for Single Act." I could see that everything was "sold out," but a gentleman was working at this door and told me to use my phone and search each barcode by time for a seat. It was about 3:00 pm, so I tried the 4:30 pm barcode. There was a seat, so I was able to book it. I need to mention that I had a pocket wifi. If I didn't have wifi, I wouldn't have been able to book the seat. I don't understand how a seat was available for a sold-out show, but I'm so happy I got in. My ticket cost 710 yen. The performance was for 30 minutes. The gentleman gave me a program about the performance in english. The show I saw was a comedy about a husband and wife making and selling dumplings. In the lower level by the theatre. I enjoyed a delicious lunch and looked at Kabukiza gift items and sweets before the show. It was fantastic. My seat was in the last row of the theatre, but I had no problem seeing and understanding the show. It was so good. This is definitely one of the top things to do, in my opinion, and I would definitely like to do this again.

The Kabuki-za was originally opened by a Meiji era journalist, Fukuchi Gen'ichirō. Fukuchi wrote kabuki dramas in which Ichikawa Danjūrō IX and others starred; upon Danjūrō's death in 1903, Fukuchi retired from the management of the theater. The theater is now run by the Shochiku Corporation which took over in 1914.

I enjoyed this act sooooo much. Beautiful music, great talents... Learning more about the real Japanese culture in the beautiful Kabuki-za environment was a unique experience and privilege ❤️

A place of pure Japanese culture to watch traditional kabuki drama. Seats from higher ranks are way cheaper and still offer a good stage view. Earphone-guides provide translation services of dialogues and lyrics from traditional Japanese to English language.

Here is the only one in Tokyo that we can watch KABUKI almost every day. If you can`t understand Japanese, you can use translator (it might cost under 1,000Yen). After an appreciation, you can go to "Tsukiji" market on foot and eat fresh fishes.

We very much enjoyed our drama performance. We purchased a single act ticket and the event was only 38 minutes long: probably enough of you don't speak Japanese. The theater provided a brief summary of the scene and there are audio guides available in English, which I did not try. Went on a whim while in Ginza. Glad I did. Recommended.

This review is before COVID, I hope this environment could be back soon! Kabuki is a traditional stage drama performed only by men with lively songs and music. It is characterized by a combination of rhythmical words, dynamic dancing, elaborate costumes and make-up, and stage sets such as revolving stage. Kabukiza Theater at Ginza, Tokyo, was opened in April 2013 after renovation. If you would like to watch Kabuki just for your experience, there is a way to watch Single Act at the theater. (We say Hitomaku-mi in Japanese.) Single Act tickets allow you to purchase tickets on the day without reservations, directly at the Box Office located on the ground level of the Kabukiza Theatre. The price is about between JPY1,000 to JPY2,000, which depends on the running time, and the time is about between 40 minutes to 1.5 hour. Go to Single Act Box Office located on the left side of the main entrance to Kabukiza Theatre on the ground level, and stand in line. Single Act tickets will be sold on the day of the performance, and seats are not guaranteed. So you should go there in advance. One person can purchase only 1 ticket for each part, so you cannot buy the ticket for somebody else not in the line. Tickets can be purchased for consecutive parts in the same play. The tickets are first come, first served. You can buy the ticket only by cash. There are approximately 96 Seats and 60 Standing Places for the Single Act located on the fourth floor of the auditorium. Tickets are individually numbered. Once you get on the lobby of fourth floor, the staff will call out the numbers to allow you to enter the auditorium. Keep your seat then. (You might not be able to keep the seat if the number is later numbers.) You have to be at the fourth floor at the latest 20 minutes before the play time. Earphone-Guide is also available for the single play. The guide provides the translation of the story and lyrics, and the explanation related to the story, music, dance, actors and so on. I am sure that you can enjoy Kabuki much!

Must-do when in Tokyo! Even as non Japanese speaker it is interesting to visit the theater and to see the great costumes and all the effort put into the show. We have purchased the ticket online. It is easy and you can choose the price category of your tickets as well. When on site, you will receive a sheet of information (in English) about the different acts (6 in total). We watched the three first acts from 11:00 to around 15:00. You have breaks in between each act and during lunch you can have a great bento (to be ordered in advance in front of the entrance to the theater hall). Eating is not allowed during the show but can be done during the breaks. Photos are not allowed as well when the show is going.

The staff were very attentive. It was a nice place. The 3/F toilets get a long line during the intermission. I’m not sure why very few people think of heading the to the 2/F toilets instead. Not much else to say; you just come here to watch the Kabuki and that’s it. Oh of course, it’s a little difficult to appreciate what you’re watching if you can’t understand the language.

Came here for traditional Japanese theatre and was not disappointed. Kabuki-Za is the real deal with a beautiful stage and fantastic performances. The ushers are very helpful if you have any questions - great service. The entrance to the theatre is also just incredible to look at. It will be better if you dress up to go in, though, but there is no strict dress code.

Although a magnificent old building, good seating with no restricted views (nor of people in front), well performed and stage settings, it is let down by having no rolling subtitles. Even Japanese get an audio (pay) so for a foreigner, the plays can get tedious without knowing what is going on. The excuse of Covid is ludicrous.

Arguably the best place to watch your first Kabuki (or 100th) — even a better place than the National Theater. Kabuki-Za is easily accessible in the middle of Ginza. The seats are awesome ( 3 stories). Second class might be the most valuable ticket. The whole institution is formal, so wear your best dress! There are subway station, Higashi-Ginza, just downstairs (Hibiya and Asakusa Line). If you have a gogle, they may come handy. ALso bring your own snack/bento to enjoy during the break (although there is also a cafe on each floor of the building).

Highly recommended going to this theather for one of the classical Kabuki shows, try to get the tickets in advance. We got ours on site the day before, they sell if for the set of 3 shows only which are about one hour each, we skipped the middle one and got lunch, still it worth it! Wonderful show, even if you don’t speak any Japanese!

The teather has a massive stage that rotates between acts to reveal different beautiful sets. If you've never seen a kabuki opera, booking a one act ticket is definitely worth. No translation or opera description is provided and not all acts/operas have the most flamboyant kabuki costumes.

Simply amazing. The new building is great. I would recommend going to the counter to buy the tickets a bit before the show. The time when the tickets start to sell must be on the website. You'll get a number which corresponds to your priority when accessing the room (and therefore your chances of getting a good seat). Don't hesitate too long before choosing your seat when you enter cause it's a bit of a run. Otherwise, normal tickets will get you closer to the stage and avoid this free seat situation, but the price is higher. Well recommended is the transcription tool they rent (about 500 or 1000 yen) with the text translation of what the actors are saying and a bit of context, if you don't speak Japanese.

Amazing experience. Foreigner friendly staff. Beautiful theatre and the stage sets, costumes, etc., were unforgettable. I'm not easily impressed but the performance I saw was of the highest quality. Even if you can't understand Japanese, they'll provide you with an English translation of the storyline so you can follow along (I'm not sure about other languages).

As a foreigner, I can say this is one of the most internationally accessable live shows. Period. They offer small tablets for rent that actually provide subtitles to the action. My tour guide recommended that we go and this was one of the few attraction he actually paid for a ticket to out of his own money and joined us. Well worth it. We entered through the walk-in line and saw a single act. If I ever return to Japan, I will be arriving to see an entire performance.

From a non-Japanese perspective (Dec 2022): The otherwise fantastic, extraordinary introduction to a uniquely Japanese theatrical expression and art form was somewhat frustrated by poor English website/ webpage design, limited ticket availability, and (since COVID) the end of simultaneous translation during performances. There’s much to discover, appreciate, and respect about kabuki here even if you couldn't get a ticket. Although you can't get into the "Kabuki-za" without a ticket, you could still visit an exhibit on the 5th floor. There, you'd see stills and prints of kabuki characters and read a little about the line of "Danjuro". The honor of the name Danjuro XIII was very recently bestowed. Kabuki fans get to support the charismatic and renowned kabuki master, Ichikawa Danjuro XIII at the theater during November and December 2022. The kabuki master's very young and talented son also join him on stage. The theatre would have gotten a 5-star if it weren't a bit challenging for non-Japanese speakers to book and experience kabuki.

Highly recommend you experience this unique aspect of Japanese culture - Very talented actors\singers\dancers and wonderfully set stage. We could follow audio in English but still easy to figure from actors' inflections and actions. Single act available if you don't have four hours to stay. Kabuki is ran for ~1.5 hours then a 35-minute intermission which is cycled twice. Thought the theatre would be packed since first class tickets sold out online but there were many empty seats.

We enjoyed the 40 minutes act from 11:00 - 11:40 for 600¥ per person and it was a really nice experience. I recommend it to everyone who is visiting Japan. If you plan to go to the same act as we did and want to get a seat I recommend to come around 10:15 (they start to sell tickets from 10:30). They have 90 seats and 60 places for standing. We went there on Sunday, came at 10:28 and we were lucky to get seats number 85,86.

Very beautiful place & performances - I could come here everyday! ❤️ Not to worry with language barrier, because they rent a translation device. And yes, it's not necessary to book the ticket in advance, you can buy it from their locker around an hour before the show (schedule can be checked through the website). Seriously recommending this for culture geek out there!

Definitively something to try in Tokyo. You can book online or on the spot for the single acts (sales starts couple of hours before the act). Full show is 4 hours and singles acts varies between 20 min (for dance) and 2 hours. If you opt out for the single act you will be on the forth floor which is pretty high but remains a good experience. Prices can be expected between 600 and 2000 yen depending on the act. For the longer acts take a translator for an additional 500 if you want to understand the story (1 for 2 works pretty well).

Both sides of the flower path are in 10 rows, and the others are carved like a checkered pattern. In addition, a wide string like a sash is hung on the shaved seat, and efforts to prevent the expansion of the feeling line are also stylish. The wonderful actors of the Nakamura family's young children have grown up brilliantly. I miss being able to eat lunch in my seat. Lovely old building. Seating good with no restricted views from people in front. Acting and sets very good. What lets it down is the lack of subtitles on a screen - foreigners will find it difficult follow the story which then becomes long drawn out and boring. Even Japanese can get an audio set. In this day and age, a sub-title screen should not be an issue.

Kabuki is a theater peculiar to Japan, and is one of the traditional performing arts. This theater was reborn with new building named kabuki tower. That day I enjoyed very popular program Shibaraku. "Shibaraku" is a program of Kabuki and is one of the Kabuki juhachiban (eighteen best plays of the Ichikawa family of Kabuki actors).

I was visiting Tokyo from America and wanted to experience Kabuki so I went to see 1 part of a show here at this theatre to get a small taste. It was very interesting and I really enjoyed the experience and recommend it to any fellow travelers. I was in the nose bleeds which was quite low cost but the seats are a bit small so if you are over 6 feet tall it may be uncomfortable. My favorite part of the show was the accompanying music and singing/chanting. I think 1 part was enough to get the experience unless you are an avid Kabuki enthusiast.

Definitely check out an act! We paid 1000¥ for 2 of us to see 15 minutes and it was such a gorgeous crane dance. Since we didn’t have more time (and my husband didn’t have the inclination), it was the perfect sample of kabuki. Everything was beautifully organized.

Kabuki should not be an option for anyone in Japan. It should be mandatory. The amount of time, preparation, and level of performance on display makes this a "Must see" for everyone. Personally, I would advise buying the slightly more expensive seats. However, I don't think there is a bad seat in the venue. Also, the headphones provide a Japanese only perspective to the performance. However, they're optional. Enjoy!

This was an amazing experience! We watched two plays. It was pricey of course, so if you’re not so much into artsy things like plays and music don’t expect it to be Japanese Broadway lol you might want to spend that money on something else. But if you have the patience to enjoy abstract expressionism, you’re going to love it. There is a souvenir shop and Kabuki-themed restaurants in the basement
